Tuberville To Texas A&M Rumors Begin

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

As the heat continues to turn up on Dennis Franchione at Texas A&M, expect to see a steady flow of rumors about Tommy Tuberville heading to College Station. In fact, it has already started.

This weekend, Tom Dienhart of the The Sporting News reported that Tuberville had an interest in the A&M job should it come available.

Phillip Marshall of The Huntsville Times disputed this Monday in his blog, saying that Tuberville told him on Sunday that he was happy at Auburn. The fact that Tuberville just moved into a new 9,000 square-foot home has to help things.

The bottom line is that Tuberville is probably at Auburn for the long haul – unless the Dallas Cowboys call. He has said that’s his dream job.

Tuberville spoke on Monday afternoon at the Columbus (Ga.) Quarterback Club and was all smiles. Here’s some of what he had to say...

Running back Tristan Davis could very well return this season. Tuberville believes he can be back in the lineup in four weeks. Davis suffered a broken foot in Gainesville...

Tray Blackmon played at about 80 percent against Florida. Tuberville said that 80 percent of Blackmon was better than nothing. He went on to say that Blackmon’s injury usually takes six weeks to heal and he’s only in week four...

On taking only 63 players instead of the usual 70, Tuberville said that he didn’t want to take players who were only going to sleep and eat...

He said when they called the timeout on fourth and one near the goal line he was thinking about kicking the field goal. But he looked at the young offensive line in front of him and they were looking back like "don't you even think about going for a field goal," so he went for the touchdown...

Tuberville said his players will think he's crazy tomorrow when they go through practice because it's going to be like two-a-days. "I have to do it because they're young and the only way they're going to get better is to practice like that..."

He said the job done by defensive coordinator Will Muschamp against Florida was probably the best he's seen since coming to Auburn...

When asked about recruiting, Tuberville said Alabama’s Nick Saban was going to make things more interesting, but added that Alabama would get about half of the in-state recruits and Auburn would get the other half.

He said that Alabama had some kids committed now that Auburn didn't offer because they don't fit what they are trying to do. Tubs said that recruiting was about done, with only about three or four slots left to fill...

Tuberville said the training room is like nothing he's ever seen and wished he hadn't gone in this morning before coming to Columbus. He said Auburn has more injuries now than the last few years combined...

Saturday’s plan to wear the road white jerseys and helmets without the interlocking AU against Vanderbilt is a nice tribute to the 1957 National Championship team. I just wish they had taken it one more step.

It would have been cool for them to wear white jerseys that actually resembled the one’s worn in 1957. There were no numbers on the shoulders or names on the back of the jerseys in those days. They also wore grey pants.

I’m not sure the NCAA would allow it. You can bet there’s a regulation somewhere governing these kinds of things.

The Tigers are an early nine point favorite this weekend against Vanderbilt. Auburn is 0-3 in the last three games played on Lincoln Financial.

In case you haven’t heard, the October 13th game at Arkansas has been picked up by ESPN and will kickoff at 6:45 p.m. CT from Fayetteville.

Congrats on the big win
In the lead up to this week's Auburn - Vanderbilt game, I'm trying to find some good Auburn blogs that I can link from my site: Save the Shield.   Please let me know if you're interested in a link exchange.

Good luck after this week!

The Troll spewed forth the same bile today...

Yea, I know, I said I wouldn't read him again, but I just had to read today's column to see that smirk wiped off his face.  Tubs up, Saban down.  How do we combat that?  Let's say (hope)that Tubs is leaving for Texas A+M.  What a joke!  Are you serious?  Tuberville didn't want to interview for the LSU job after Saban left.  If he didn't want that job, (a lateral move at best) why the hell would he want to go to A+M?? (no offense, Aggies.  Good Bull!)

Why would he want to start over in a new, inferior conference, and leave all this talent he's been cultivating for so long?  He'd have to be crazy.

Sorry, Bammers.  You're going to need a new plan.

Not just Bammers

I'm certainly no fan of Alabama, but I think it takes a certain amount of denial to believe that only Bama fans expect Tuberville to be gone.

In particular, the jet incident left an impression of your athletic department as really unprofessional.   I didn't even live in AL at the time and I heard enough to think it reflected really poorly on Auburn.   So now when I read newspaper reports that the AU powers that be are just looking for an excuse to get rid of TT, it doesn't matter how biased those reports may be -- they certainly sound plausible.

I agree that all things being equal, AU is a much better job than TAMU.   But given the amount of flak TT has had to put up with there, and the perception that people are looking for excuses to run him out of town, all things aren't equal.   Barring something like finishing 10-3, I'd be moderately surprised if he's around next year.

Just an outsider's .02.   Here's to a well-played game Saturday, and good luck after that.

Thanks for your insight

But be prepared to be surprised next year when Tuberville remains at Auburn.  Unfortunately, you don't know all there is about the entire situation because if you did you would know that Tuberville has it made at Auburn right now.  With a six million dollar buyout, a brand new 9000 sq ft house, and his repeated denials of wanting to go  anywhere makes me confident that he will stick around for many, many more years.  I don't feel as though anyone is looking for excuses to get rid of him.  Honestly, you don't have to have excuses.  If you are not winning then your time at any school is numbered.

The jet incident is in the past.  We have moved past that and I am sure that Tuberville has moved past that.  Sure he may still have some hard feelings but with William Walker and David Housel gone, its a thing of the past.  Tuberville has more power and more job security than anyone and for you or any other "outsider" to indicate otherwise only shows how naive you truly are.

You are right in saying that Auburn is a much better job that aTm and he has a hell of a lot of talent at Auburn so for him to want to leave and go to some other school to rebuild is crazy.  The rumor has already been put the rest.

Good luck to you on Saturday as well as the rest of the year.

Staying at A&M...

All indicators point to Franchione staying at A&M. SI.com released this article a little earlier today and, although I know its impossible to believe everything coaches say, he seems pretty confident he is staying. LONG LIVE TUBBY!
