Brace For More Tuberville To Texas A&M Talk

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

You can bet the Tommy Tuberville to Texas A&M talk will heat up this week following the Aggies 19-11 loss to Kansas over the weekend.

I’ve heard from several sources that Tuberville’s agent, Jimmy Sexton is already in preliminary talks with the university on a contract extension.

Don’t be fooled by the talk of Auburn waiting until the end of the year to begin negotiations. Sources say there are several things Tuberville is asking for, including higher pay for his assistants.

Huntsville Times writer Phillip Marshall wrote a story yesterday quoting athletic director Jay Jacobs as saying Auburn is committed to Tuberville. You would certainly think so.

Another rumor floating around the Big 12 is that Nebraska may be interested in talking with Tuberville. And who can blame them?

His contract runs through 2011 and currently has a $6 million buy-out clause. Tuberville is guaranteed a minimum of $2.35 million this season. He automatically gets a $200,000 raise each season for television and radio rights.

Right now, Tuberville is saying all the right things.

"It makes good talk doesn’t it?" he says. "I guess there is not anything else to talk about. I don’t read too much this time of year. I guess this time of year speculation starts on people moving, getting fired and changing jobs.

"It’s just part of the business and I’m used to dealing with it over the past 12 or 13 years. It doesn’t bother me too much and I don’t get involved with it. When we signed a contract a few years ago it was a commitment on both sides."

As we’ve discussed before, all indications are Tuberville is happy. You still have to believe that he will listen should other teams call. That’s business.

But Tuberville knows what he’s got at Auburn. Regardless of what the king of yellow journalism says in Birmingham, his team next season has a very legitimate shot at winning a conference championship and maybe a national championship.

Next year’s team will be loaded on both sides of the ball. The schedule is very manageable – or at least more so than this year’s. If Tuberville can settle on a quarterback, things look very good in 2008.

Looking more down the road, Tuberville has to believe that he’s just a few recruiting classes away from being a perennial top 10 team. It could take 10 years at Texas A&M to get to that point.

At this juncture in his career, money has to be secondary. We should all be so lucky. Tuberville’s much more interested in taking care of his family and his assistants.

There’s little doubt Auburn can provide that security.

With that said, Auburn must take Tuberville seriously during negotiations. Like it or not, Nick Saban has increased the pay range for college coaches. Auburn officials will have to play in that world.

If they don’t, it will cost them much more than $4 million a year.

Time to pony up.........

and give Tubby the raise he wants for himself and his staff. The man has shown he is one of the best coaches in the nation consistently over the past few seasons and is continuing to do so this year as well. And before any of the lowderesque cock roaches start spewing their vitriol tell me who are you gonna get thats better and at what price? Keep Tuberville and the program headed in the right direction and open up the coffers.

Absolutely, pay the man.

.....We're in really good shape, being able to sell out against even bad teams like Ole Miss.

Great column, Jay...

I would also like to echo the sentiment of the previous posts... pay the man what he's worth!

There's a lot to be said for stability at the top.  Let's keep Coach T. around for the long haul.

On to Amen Corner...  I like our chances.

Tubby must stay

I for one agree.  Tubs has been great for Auburn.  He knows he's in a great situation in Auburn and I don't believe he'll even, for a second, consider leaving for A&M.  He has worked hard to get the right coaches, coordinators and players to fit his system.  All the pieces of his puzzle are in Auburn...all that's left to be done is to put it all together.  He'll stay in Auburn and get it done!  War Eagle!!

Nebraska keeps popping up...
...on some of the online threads as a possible team that may vye for Tubs' services.  If you want to go to the B12, you choose Nebraska over ATM.  I hate to say it, but Nebraska is a program with better prestige than our own.  But why on earth would he want to start over in Lincoln is beyond me.

You never know about these guys.  They live and die on their own personal hype.  They're all hired guns.  Having a coach staying at his alma mater for 25 years is an anachronism these days.  If one becomes a true believer during his tenure, that's just gravy.  Maybe Tommy is starting to sip a little of the War Eagle Kool-aid...

Nebraska's not only a total rebuild job,

.....(their defense is terrible) but you have to remember that they fired Frank Solich after a 9-3 campaign. Nebraska HAD prestige, but right now, they are probably the laughing-stock of the Big-12, even moreso than Iowa State (sorry, Chizik) and Baylor.

216 yards is a lot.

.....With a lead, and facing a horribly erratic passing attack (12-28, 1 pick, no TDs), the Huskers allowed Jamaal Charles to run for 216. No, not for the game. 216 yards, ALL IN THE 4th QUARTER! You sure you want that mess, Tubs/Muschamp?

.....Charles had 290 for the game. He had 4th quarter TD runs of 25, 86, and 40 yards. I wouldn't even begin to know how to fix a D that leaky!

As far as Tuberville is concerned...

... I am hoping and praying Auburn will do whatever it takes to keep him no matter what. He is our coach and I really feel like the Auburn national is standing tall behind his leadership.

On a more off topic subject... anyone else see this interested piece of news today?? Groves will be playing linebacker (at least part time) for the rest of the season so that he and Coleman can both be on the field at the same time... very interesting indeed...

Congrats to Groves, but...

.....My recollection of an earlier Groves linebacker appearance was him losing his man and giving up a throw-back touchdown, against K-State. I don't think he's going to be a polished product, there. Mostly, this move is a tribute to how well SenDerrick Marks and Antonio Coleman are playing.

SOUNDS LIKE...

Groves is almost being sarcastic with this comment:  "I'm thanking them for easing me in now rather than just jumping into the fire."

haha
