Monday Morning Hangover Edition

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

I do believe the sun will come up this morning, although for the record it’s still dark outside. We are now two days removed from what we’ve known for more than a week. This Auburn team is not likely to have a painting hanging over at Auburn Art anytime soon.

Here are some random thoughts as we begin another long week...

Replacing Brandon Cox at quarterback is not the answer. Not yet anyway. With road games to Gainesville, Fayetteville, Baton Rouge and Athens coming fast and furious, there’s no way Blake Field or Kodi Burns can match what Cox brings to the team.

Cox has earned the right to be given the benefit of the doubt. Let’s see what he does the next couple of weeks against Mississippi State and New Mexico State. Two games don’t make the player or the team.

Mississippi State will not be a cake walk on Saturday. It’s easy to look at the LSU game and believe it’s the same old Bulldogs. State controlled the LSU offensive line in the first half. It will be another stiff test for a struggling Auburn O-line. There’s no question Auburn should win and win comfortably, but don’t put it in the win column yet.

There’s no word on who’ll be available on the defensive side of the ball this week. Tommy Tuberville said yesterday that it would be later in the week before the extent of all the injuries are sorted out. Questionable for Saturday’s game are linebackers Tray Blackmon and Merrill Johnson, safety Aairon Savage, defensive back Jonathan Wilhite and punter Ryan Shoemaker.

Shoemaker apparently dislocated his elbow while trying to make a tackle. Somebody please tell the punter and kicker to run straight off the field once the ball leaves their foot.

Saturday night’s crowd was disappointing. First off, there’s no way 82,000 people were in attendance. In the upper decks, there were entire sections that were completely empty – see section 99 for proof.

Most Auburn fans would like to see the stadium expanded, yet they can’t fill up what they’ve got. If Auburn is going to continue to grow its program, it has to sell out for games like South Florida. There’s really no excuse for the attendance.

Then again, maybe those not there were just smarter than the rest of us and saw what was coming down the road later that night.

The top 25 polls were released yesterday and not surprisingly, Auburn has dropped out of both. The Tigers got about six votes more than Appalachian State in the AP poll. I’m telling the truth. Maybe it was something of a surprise that Auburn dropped out of the Coaches Poll. Going from 13th to out is pretty severe. But I can’t say I blame the coaches.

I hesitate to write about this because it’s going to make us look like sore losers. What the hell, I’ll do it anyway. For those of you at the game, did you get a good look at the South Florida fans?

I don’t think it’s a reach to say those are the trashiest fans to ever step foot into Jordan-Hare Stadium. Good lord, some of them looked like they hadn’t bathed since arriving in town. Most of them were in t-shirts and jean shorts and unexplainably all had beads around their necks. About half the men were wearing bull-horn hats.

Note to South Florida fans: That’s not the best look for you.

Yes you sound like a sore loser.  I enjoy your site but that is the lamest post ever.  College kids in funny hats, body paint and not looking clean enough after a full day of tailgating and a 9:00 pm  kickoff.  Shocker!

Credit where its due.  We boasted last year that we beat Florida at JH.  This year we got our asses beat by a better all around team from Florida, just not Gainesville.  USF has beaten Louisville and West Virginia in the last 2 years.  They were never going to be a pushover.

Crowd...

The cameras at ESPN never panned to show empty seats, so it is a surprise to me that we wouldn't have a sell out.  Very strange.  Could anyone tell me the last game we lost at JH that wasn't a sell-out?  If I had to guess, I'd say the 1990 Southern Miss game.

Good point, Jay.  We don't need a bigger stadium if we can't fill the one we have.  Over in Athens, they sell it out even for the cupcakes.  Hell, they sold it out back in 1988 when William and Mary came to town and William was injured and only Mary lined up at scrimmage.

There's quite an apathetic streak that Auburn people have occasionally.  Maybe it stems from that massive inferiority complex that Bammers say we have...

Cox Doesn't Need Benching?

You're right, you may not need to bench after 2 games but what about 3 games (at least) year where he was mediocre at best?  He's a SENIOR for goodness sake!  He knows better than to throw off his back foot, throw into double and triple coverage and take a sack on 2nd down instead of throwing it away.  I say give Blake or Kodi a chance.  They can't be any worse.

Attendance

With all due respect regarding the attendance...the game was at 8:00 pm CST.  That is by far the latest kickoff that Auburn has had.  I could be wrong.  I live in Birmingham and it was nearly 3:00 am Sunday morning before I even got home.  Not everyone has the $$$ to get a hotel room, etc.  Yes there were a couple of sections that were empty but I can see why.  I don't think it was that bad and if Auburn continues to schedule quality opponents then I don't think we will have any problems filling the stadium up.  Hopefully we won't have any more LATE kickoffs the rest of the season.

Honestly, if you hesitate about writing something then it is probably a good idea not to post it.  It makes you sound as though you are better than someone and I don't think that is the case.

Point Taken...

If I offended anyone with my comments about the USF fans, I apologize. It was an off the cuff remark. Maybe I should have hesitated. I was not referring to the college students, but rather the drunk 50 somethings that we encountered. Again, I didn't mean to offend anyone.

As for the USF team, you have to give them credit. They do have a class act in coach Jim Leavitt. They deserved to win, no question about it.

Regarding Mr Cox.

I think you are absolutely wrong about Brandon Cox.  3 years ago when he first started out, he earned a little lenience by showing a ton of talent and still being only a Sophomore.  But being in his third season as a starter, and his second being worse than his first, I show no lenience for bad play.

Please don't give me an crap about the fact that he was hurt last season and that led to poor passes and blah blah blah, enough with the excuses.  If a player is too injured to play to his fullest, he is too injured to play at all.  Honestly, when was the last game that he showed anything?  When I say anything, I don't mean only good play, but I also include good leadership or any spark of wanting to win.  If you have a quarterback who is willing to duck his head and loft a pass kind of  on the right-ish side of field and then just trot off the field as though he did nothing wrong, you have a quarterback that needs a reality check.

Anyone blaming the offensive line for Cox taking a ton of hits is completely off base.  I believe that the offensive line has played better than last year so far and shows a ton of potential.  But you can't look at a line that is facing 7 to 9 men in the box with 2 to 3 blitzers the entire game due to the fact that the opposing defenses have no respect for your quarterback.  It is now proven that if you sit 8 in the box and send blitzes from different angles constantly, you can shut down our run and get at our quarterback easily.

Cox has either got to be benched or he needs to show that he is the leader of the offense and that he will punish defenses who don't respect his arm.
