Tuberville: I'm Sticking With Brandon

It’s really the only choice. Many of you have posted messages and diary entries here demanding a change at quarterback. You certainly have a valid argument, but we really don’t have a viable second option.
Kodi Burns is almost certainly going to redshirt this season. Tuberville said so yesterday.
"The way people are playing us we've got to throw the ball," said Tuberville. "Kodi doesn't know the passing game as well as Brandon. His elusiveness will probably help a little bit. But you're still going to have to throw it most of the time. They are not going to sit back and give you an opportunity to run it, either. Let a couple of more games go by and Kodi will be looking at redshirting for sure."
That leaves only Blake Field in the mix. He came on strong at the end of fall practice and has played well in spot duty over the past few years. Outside of a total meltdown against Miss State this weekend, I think it’s a safe bet that Cox will be under center when the Tigers head to Gainesville in a few weeks.
We are learning a little more about the injury situation for Saturday’s game with the Bulldogs. Linebacker Tray Blackmon practiced on Sunday and is expected to play this weekend. It looks like Aairon Savage is a scratch at safety. Tuberville says its unlikely he’ll see action.
Linebacker Merrill Johnson left the South Florida game early with a bruised shoulder, but is expected to play. Punter Ryan Shoemaker is suffering from a dislocated elbow – damn you know that hurts, but is expected to punt against State.
Have you seen a harder hit than the one Walter McFadden laid on the USF blocker during that punt return in the second half? It brings back memories of Junior Rosegreen in 2004. That’s got to be on YouTube somewhere.

Let’s not forget that Bama’s season doesn’t really start until Saturday against Arkansas. Give Nick Saban credit. This team looks more disciplined than any we’ve seen in recent years. I believe it’s even safe to say they are better than a year ago.
However, that doesn’t always translate to more wins. We’ll know more about them in three weeks after games with Arkansas, Georgia and Florida State.
Until further notice, Auburn still controls college football in the state of Alabama. An Alabama win over Vanderbilt and an Auburn loss doesn’t change that. The season is long and the Tide must come to Jordan-Hare.
Did you notice the play of linebacker Chris Evans? How could you not, right? Filling in for Tray Blackmon, he led the team in tackles with 14. Position coach James Willis is living up to his billing as a guy who can develop talent.
Name the last freshman kicker to hit three field goals each in his first two games. That’s exactly what Wes Byrum has done to start the season. He’s hit 5 of 6 including a 49 yard FG against USF. If he continues at this pace, and let’s face it, with the way the offense is playing he should have ample opportunity, Byrum is on track to surpass the record for most field goals in a season set by Scott Etheridge with 22 in 1992.

It was...
...definately a somber mood around campus on Monday. Not a whole lot was being said anywhere. What was being said, as you can imagine, wasn't very positive. If they keep playing like this they're looking towards going 6-6.

Got to stick with Brandon...
.....There's really not much choice. I've watched the past three spring games, and I know how the two behind him throw. And we can't take a freshman into the swamp in two weeks...
.....The new jumbotron and ribbon boards were impressive, as were the new mega-orange band uniforms. I thought that the crowd was good and loud, too. Too bad our offense was so poor! Well, except for the second quarter. I thought we were fixing to crank it up after that!
.....I do have to agree that the Bull-hats are pretty goofy! We ran into a cluster of those guys behind the new Miller Gorrie Center. One of them had a 1.75 liter of Cuervo Gold in one hand, and a bottle of margarita mix in the other. He'd take a chug of tequila, a chug of mix, and a chug of tequila. He started mumbling something at us that sounded kind of like "suck," but then his antlers got caught up in a low tree limb, spun him around, and he fell on top of his bottles. (Which didn't break!) I KNOW that guy didn't see the end of the game!
.....State's not going to be a cakewalk. Heck, the way we're playing right now, there are no guarantees against Tennessee Tech or New Mexico State. I'll be tuned in on the radio for the Bulldog game on my way to the beach. I'm hoping that a week of sand, ocean, and frozen margaritas will fix the ache I was left with last Saturday. It was a long drive home after that fiasco...
Quit!
Assuming the world is at an end and that its all Cox's fault. The AU nation needs to stop the bickering and calling for Brandon to sit. The morons have come out of the wood work and started calling for his head, Tubby's head, Borges' head, etc..... Everyone needs to stop the kneejerk (with an emphasis on jerk) reaction it doesnt do anyone any good and won't improve our situation.
What will improve the situation? Glad you asked. In short running the ball, running the ball and last running the ball. Cox doesn't need to be put in the position where he feels he has to be the one to win the game. AU has always, as most SEC offenses have, used the running game to set up the pass not the other way around.
I equate this loss to the same kind of demons that cost AU a win in Baton Rouge a couple of years ago. Five turnovers with 4 in the second half? Not typical of an AU team. At best an aberration. I keep hearing all the bammers saying USF should've blown us out and we were lucky. BULLSH*T. USF had that game handed to them, they were the lucky ones. Last time I checked we were still an SEC powerhouse and it doesn't stop with one game or one season.
I will be the first to admit that I was disappointed when Tubby was hired, I was disappointed when Bowden was fired (and still am, his only crime was not being a "yes" man for Lowder the rest was fodder for the rumor mill). But Tubby is our coach now and should be until he tanks bad. And think about this, fellow Plainsman, Tommy Tubberville is the first AU coach in decades that doesn't have to cater to the whims of that little napoleanic fart or his cronies on the board of trustees. If for that reason only he is my coach of choice.
The Bright Side. Mario Fannin. Despite his 2 fumbles I don't think there are any out there that don't recognize that this kid is special. Ben Tate. We already know he is a wrecking ball. As soon as the O-line learns to push the line in the middle he will punish defensive lineman and linebackers. When, not "if", that happens Cox will be the QB we all expected to see. Our defense looks as good as any in the country even when we have had to go into the depth chart for starters. Our Tigers can still win the west, can still beat the bammers, and no matter what we are still AU!

Welcome back, Todd
I was wondering where you've been. Good post you make. You echo my sentiments with "run the ball, run the ball, run the damn ball!" The offense had some momentum at the end of the first half, momentum provided by a good running attack. Fannin looked pretty good. They shouldn't make him stay in the doghouse too long, although maybe it might be a good idea to have him carry the ball to class this week...
I can't ever remember second-guessing Tuberville the way I did about eating the ball and going to overtime. I know why he did it, but is it really wise to tell your offense that you have absolutely no confidence in them? Also, don't you want to try and build some momentum going into OT? If you're not trying to win it, you're losing it!
Cox is our horse. We'll have to ride him until the end. Yes, the other guys can do worse and probably would. I couldn't believe my eyes on that play where Brandon scrambled and ran for about 8 yards. I think he's going to step it up here real soon!

Changes...
I think we see Kodi Burns in a change of pace role to Brandon on Saturday. Either Robert Dunn was given the task of really confusing the Miss St. game plan (unlikely) or he basically let it slip that the coaches are working on some wrinkles to get Kodi in the game.

Don't blame you for the doubt War Eagle Atlanta..
I had the same reaction. Our defense was on its heels, and they were worn out, the momentum had swung in a big way. Add to that that our kicking game had been very good and we only needed a little more than 30 yards to make an attempt......I really really wanted to try and get that 30+ yards. But Tubby is our coach and second guessing him now can't help. It is what it is and I am confident that the sun will shine regardless. As far as my whereabouts? Deep deep depression causes withdrawal from the outside world. Especially when it is filled with bammers thinking they have already won the 2007 Iron Bowl. I have, however, been negotiating with the devil to assure that the bammers can feel the sting of a loss to a team that was "beaten" by the lowly directional school. Ok so that last part wasn't true but don't think I wouldn't consider it. lol.
War Damn Eagle!
Glad to see you among...
the living. All is not lost. Bama opens its season this weekend. The preseason is over for them. A victory over Vandy doesn't restore them. We'll find a way to win in November. War Eagle!
Regarding Tubberville and Cox...
I made a post regarding both Tubberville's position and Cox's as well after the game and it was most likely just crap timing on my part. I have been saying both for the past year. I am not demanding Tubberville's head, but I do think that he will never deliver a national championship for Auburn. I could be wrong, but I think that all he is good for is a perennial top 25, which to many is great, but it seems as though most want more.
As for replacing Cox, yes I certainly think it needs to be done. He has no heart. I don't care if they bring in another quarterback and he blows it, but if he shows that he wants to play and plays hard, I would be fine with it. When Cox plays poorly he does nothing to show that he wants to be there, he simply just trots around like he did nothing wrong. He needs a wake-up call and I think playing Blake Field as a starter on Saturday could do that. That would give us a look at Field against a team that has a reasonable defense and allows him to get some much needed game reps. You can't tell me that Auburn football is screwed if Cox gets injured for the season.
If going undefeated.......
won't win a national championship at AU what will? And if you are saying that he can't go undefeated again I have to disagree. I am not saying he will but he definitely has proven that he can and if you can do something once then guess what. Read the 4th paragraph in my first post above and you have a good enough reason to keep him around. Bobby Lowder has micro managed AU into trouble with sacs, the NCAA, and has neutered the alumni association, anything that lessens his grip on my alma matre gets my support. Matt, while my comments were not directed at you directly, perhaps you should reflect on the reasons, Tubby should be given the time to prove himself or fail miserably, that I have given . I believe you are an AU student aren't you? If the overall health of the University is less important than winning football games then you don't have a good idea of just how damaging the AU nation believes Mr. Lowder is for AU. Don't just take my word for it ask around, do the research. And if you keep up with the political happenings and management practices by the board of trustees at AU you will learn for yourself. War Eagle.
Todd...
How much money has Lowder given lately to keep himself inserted in the middle of Auburn's affairs? I swear, if they name this new arena after him, I'll never give the school another dime.
You're right. If going undefeated at a SEC school won't give you a title, what will? It's entirely possible that we could do it again. If you would have told me when I started school at Auburn that we would have two undefeated seasons in the next 20 years, I would have probably chalked up two NCs. Not to be, however--probabtion in 1993 and politics in 2004.
