South Florida Quarterback Is The Real Deal

The South Florida game has begun to take on a life of its own during the past few days. We’ve known all year the Bulls would be a test. They are a solid football team. However, they are not Southern Cal. The talk has ratcheted to such a point that I’m starting to feel like Pat Dye on game day... Can we even stay on the field with them?
The outcome may be different, but this game reminds me so much of the 1996 Fresno State game. Do you remember that one? The national media was saying that Auburn would face a tough test and many predicted a Fresno State win – notably our friend Lee Corso of ESPN fame. Of course, Auburn came out swinging and won the game 62-0.
I’m not saying that’s going to happen Saturday night, but South Florida wasn’t exactly a giant killer last week in its 28-13 win over Elon (wherever that is).

Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp knows his group is in for a fight. All 11 will be tested. Grothe threw for 2,576 yards last season with 15 touchdowns. But here’s a weakness: He also threw 14 interceptions. The Tiger secondary hasn’t been known for recording a lot of interceptions in recent years, but they should have ample opportunity to make some big plays Saturday.
Grothe passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns last week. He’s been put on every preseason watch list imaginable, including The Maxwell Award, Manning Award and the NationalChamps.net 2007 Heisman Trophy watch list. Last year he was named Big East Rookie of the Year and was second in the nation among freshmen in total offense.
Heck, he even has his own web site that is run by a fan – mattgrothe.com

There’s no question that Grothe will be a test. But when you really break it down, there’s not a whole lot around him that leads you to believe that South Florida can win. Maybe I’m missing something – my wife says it happens regularly, but I just don’t see Auburn losing Saturday night.
Before I go, I want to share with you a video of Matt Grothe from last year’s game with Pittsburgh. This will give you an idea of what kind of athlete South Florida has at quarterback. It should be fun. Enjoy the game.

Fresno State
Last year, College Game Day had an anniversary of some sort, and they interviewed the cast. Corso said his worst prediction was the Fresno state game. He said that now whenever they're at a game in which Auburn plays, some Auburn fan is always there with a sign saying '62-0'. Gotta love it!
I like Corso. Without him, that show goes nowhere.

Flushed Fresno!
.....I remember Corso's words. Idiot! I think we ran the shotgun nearly every play, and Craig torched 'em. The only negative was that Jarrett Holmes missed the last PAT. That foreshadowed several later melt-downs in the kicking game, most notably the LSU "barnburner" game. Holmes missed 3 field-goals, and a potential game-tying PAT in that one. Then there was the miss of a 3rd-quarter chip-shot FG against UGA, that led to a 4-OT marathon.
.....That was an amazing video, and Grothe DID remind me of Dameyune Craig. But, you have to remember who they were playing. I LOVED "the Wannstache" back when he was running the Cowboy defense during the Jimmy Johnson super-bowl teams. I thought that he was a serious mastermind, on the level of a Bill Oliver-type. Subsequent coaching stops have debunked that foolish notion. Pittsburg is a pretty bad team, these days!
Post Mortem Thoughts
I don't normally make too many coaching criticisms, but when Tubbs ran the clock out with 2nd and 10 from our own 38, 37 seconds left, and 2 timeouts remaining, we lost the game right there. You are telling your offense that you don't trust them to not screw it up, and more importantly, you are building exactly ZERO momentum going into overtime. Even if we had failed to gain 30 yeards in two plays to attempt a field goal, the offense might have gotten some confidence--something they desperately needed in the second half.
My hat's off to the defense, who played one hell of a game. Normally, when we give up 5 turnovers, it's a blow-out. They kept us in it until the bitter end. Rarely when we shoot ourself in the foot is the defense the one holding the pistol.
ESPN sucked yesterday. They're trying to squeeze too many games into few little time slots. People who started watching the two mid-afternoon games missed a large chunk of the first quarter because the previous game ran late, same with the two evening games. Why? Because they only allotted three hours per game. That's stupid, because even with the clock rule changes from last year, games still have a real good chance of running three and a half hours or longer. We at home literally missed half of the first quarter of last night's game. ESPN is supposed to delay the kickoff of the game if the previous one is running late, but you can't delay it forever. Get it together, world-wide leader in sports!

You are right about ESPN
I got home late to watch the replay and caught the end of the Georgia game. You would think ESPN would learn how to space games out.
I was surprised by the chorus of boos at the end of the fourth quarter when we sat on the ball. Most people shared your opinion. I can see both sides. It does send a bad message to your offense. But on the other hand, as bad as they were playing, I can almost understand. But I think I'm in the minority. This season is teetering bad at this point. Let's hope we can right the ship.
Thoughts from my first AU game
Yall were right. The flying of the eagle before the game was amzing. It flew directly over me and sent chills down my spine. The atmosphere was very electric I thought. But once the game went into overtime mose of the students knew it was over. The people sitting around me were absolute jerks so that kind of took some of the fun out of it. Also, I thought that throwing water bottles at the USF players after the game was classless. I mean, the team just went on the road and upset a top 25 team. They didn't do anything any other team would not have done. If they had scored in the other endzone they still would have done it. Kudos to them for playing a good game. Also, kudos to their coach for out coaching Tubbs. They're Qb is the real deal, but so is Mike Ford. I can't remember who he laid out, but that son of a gun isn't afraid to lower his pads. I'm just glad he's there and couldn't meet the admissions requirements at UA. Overall I had a great time though even though we lost. I hope I can go again before the season is over.

Glad you had a good time
You are right about the bottle throwing. I saw it on television this morning during the replay. It really makes us look classless. It's always that small group that makes everyone look stupid. You are right, the eagle flight was the best one I've seen since last year's LSU game. It was awesome. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the night.
