Big Problems In The Auburn Athletic Department

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

The fallout from defensive coordinator Will Muschamp’s sudden departure to Texas has now reached meltdown status.

Accusations are flying all over the internet, television and print media as to why a seemingly happy Muschamp up and left within a 24 hour period. If you’ve been anywhere on the internet this weekend, you know that most fingers are pointed at athletic director Jay Jacobs.

These days Jacobs is blamed for everything from Brittany Spears conduct to the crisis in Darfur. To say he’s a lightening rod is an understatement. Whether he’s responsible for Muschamp’s departure is a complicated question.

We know with certainty that Muschamp became unhappy with his contract during the week of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Despite popular belief, this was not a new contract.

It was simply an amendment to the existing one that raised his salary to $425,000 annually and extended the deal for three years. The amended contract would have made him the highest paid assistant coach in the SEC heading into the 2008 season.

The sticking point for Muschamp was the ending date of the agreement and whether the contract would be paid in full should Tuberville accept another head coaching job.

"Obviously, there was a miscommunication on my contract," Muschamp said. "The way I read it, my contract was up on Feb. 5, 2008. I had to do what was best for my family."

Muschamp also contends that he would be obligated to pay the remainder of his contract to Auburn should he decide to accept another job offer.

Jacobs says this simply isn’t true. And document attained by Phillip Marshall at The Huntsville Times appear to back these points.

According to Marshall, "There is nothing in the eight-page copy of the contract that requires him to pay money to Auburn for leaving for a coordinator's job in college or the NFL. There is no mention of the contract expiring in 2008."

Jacobs emphatically denies wanting to run Muschamp off.

"It was important to me that we keep Will," Jacobs told Marshall. "It was important enough that we gave him a $100,000 raise and added a year to his contract. I told him 'We'll tear up whatever you have and write it exactly as you want it.' I made it clear that a contract or money weren't going to be issues."

With that said, I honestly believe Jacobs in this situation. No sane person would try and run off the hottest assistant coach in the country.

I also believe the Auburn Athletic Department has serious leadership and management problems. How does a misunderstanding lead to something this big?

Are the lines of communication between Jacobs, Tuberville and the rest of the coaching staff so bad that they can’t pick up the phone and get clarification? All of their offices sit together on the second floor of the athletic department. Can you not walk in and get an answer?

Tuberville and Jacobs can smile pretty for the cameras and say nice things about each other, but the truth is becoming clear.

There are serious communication problems between the two. In fact, there seems to be communication problems between Jacobs and others within the department.

From the beginning, Jacobs was never a popular hire. For one, he’s not the most outgoing person. For a guy that’s tasked with selling his university, this is a huge liability.

Secondly, Auburn Athletics is a huge business. When you are running a $40 million operation, you need a CEO. Schools that are successful are the one’s that hire business leaders and not ex-football players.

Gone are the days of the football coach retiring and moving upstairs to run the athletic department. Today college football is big business that requires someone with strong management and communication skills.

You have to question Jacob’s business experience. Playing for Pat Dye is not enough. Overseeing fund raising for an athletic department doesn’t necessarily get you prepared for running a high powered organization.

Get on any Auburn message board and the overwhelming consensus is that Jacob’s is out to get Tuberville. I don’t believe that. Nor do I question his love and commitment to Auburn.

What I do question is his ability to lead.

Unfortunately, this weekend we got a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Auburn Athletic Department.  What we’ve seen is not pretty.

Auburn has big problems at the top. A "misunderstanding" has cost the university one of the bright young minds in college football.  The question today is, what’s next?

Tuberville has said all the right things this weekend. He’s said the search for a new coordinator is underway and the response has been overwhelming. Outwardly, he appears to be confident that Muschamp’s departure is just a bump in the road.

But you have to wonder how he really feels. You have to wonder how this incident will affect his relationship with Jacobs going forward.

Let’s hope that reasonable heads prevail and the athletic department, long a dysfunctional mess, will be fixed. Jay Gogue has his first real challenge as president of Auburn University.

Don't buy it...

Sorry Jay...I don't buy it.  By saying there was a miscommunication on the part of Jay Jacobs and Will Muschamp is rediculous.

Will wanted out of Auburn for some reason or another and when Jay Jacobs kept giving him everything he wanted Will just had to say it was a miscommunication.  You honestly expect us to beleive that Will's first time of viewing his contract that he signed in 2006 was during THIS YEAR'S Chick Fil A Bowl?  I find that hard to beleive as well as many Auburn fans.

Yes, Jay Jacobs was not a smart hire.  I have to honestly beleive that this was Will Muschamp's sole decision and the only way he could get out was to just say there was miscommunication regarding his contract when we all know that is bullsh!t.  I feel as though he thinks he can land a head coaching job faster at Texas than he could have at Auburn...he was offered the Sourthern Miss job but turned it down.  The Southern Miss job would have been great for him and is a much better job than the Iowa State job that Chizik landed.

Either way, I wish him the best.  But the way he left Auburn will leave a sour taste in my mouth as well as the rest of the Auburn nation.  But enough of the Will Muschamp saga...let's get a new DC.  Maybe in two years Texas will come calling again.

I didn't like...

.....the Tuberville to Arkansas mess. Jacobs wrung his hands. You can't do that, as a leader. Your troops' morale will decay. "Well, I consider it a lifetime contract."

.....So then, we have the "highest paid assistant coach in the SEC." According to various sources, there appear to be two different contracts. OK, Mr. Mudslinger, Mr. Doomsayer, Mr. Findbaum, no matter what, let's see them. Separate contracts, each with Muschamp's signature, would prove malfeasance of the Larry Langford order! Or at best, idiocy on the part of Muschamp and his agent...

.....Certainly, Muschamp has little to lose, to release the "contract" that's in his hands. It could only go to relieve suspicions against him. These suspicions, should a tainted, fake contract actually NOT exist, could derail his career. George O'Leary, much?

.....So, who's lying? Jacobs? Muschamp? I hope it's not Jacobs, since we're still currently saddled with him. He reminds me an awful lot like a certain Shakespeare, dangerous ignoramus, lately. Namely, MacBeth.

I think Will's reason for leaving is

simple in nature.  After pondering on it a bit, I don't believe it's miscommunication on either Jacobs, Tubberville or Mushchamp part.  I think it's just a simple decision by Will to broaden his experiences in becoming a HC one day.  His resume will have names on it like Les Miles, Tommy Tubberville and Mack Brown.  No alien abduction or smoking gun.  Just simply wanting to grow as a coach and work under another system.

Our 'knee jerk' reaction is to always lay blame on someone and excuse it away as a money issue and that we didn’t pay him enough.  "Why would anyone want to leave the loveliest village on the plain?"

It's rare in life when we see someone make choices that we can't explain.  It’s not always about the money (reference JoPa’s 400K annual salary).  Maybe, just maybe, Will is one of these guys.

I will not comment on Jacob’s ability to run an athletic department.  I don’t know that situation well enough, but I will say that someone who is running a $40 million department better be more than just a football alumnus.

Don't be a 'Homer' and think that everyone loves Auburn as much as we love it and that coaches should have the same agenda as we do.  People come and go.  It's about the kids any way and all the hard work they put into the game.  Auburn is and always will be prestigious enough to attract the up-and-coming football coaches.

Look for us to pick up Tenuta in the next week or so and we will be just fine.  We’re Auburn.

Yeah, ease up everybody...

I haven't seen one mention of the fact that Muschamp is a Bulldog deep down.  How soon is the UGA job going to open up?

Richt will have another ten years at UGA before he bolts for the U to finish up his career at his alma mater.  By that time, UGA will hire Muschamp after his first successful stint as HC at (fill in blank here of some ACC, Big 11, et al school).

I agree with the previous comments that his move is simply a resume builder and I personally think it is a good one.

I would love to see John Tenuta on the Plains, as well.  We will not miss a beat on defense with Tenuta, people!  He did more with less at Tech and I seem to recall a couple of his Tech defenses dominating our Tigers.

The sky is not falling.  Sure, we lost a bright, energetic DC, but we will find an equally awesome replacement to lead the defense in the future.

This whole thing smells

,,,,of a Bobby Lowder meddling.

Muschamp wanted out for some reason and I do not believe it was Tuberville.  Those two seemed to get along great, and Muschamp even said Tubs was the best coach he had ever worked for. Tubby went to bat for Muschamp and got him a big raise.

Jay, you say:

"I also believe the Auburn Athletic Department has serious leadership and management problems. How does a misunderstanding lead to something this big?"

Suppose, Muschamp was being pressured by Lowder to undermine Tuberville.  We certainly know that Lowder has tried to it in the past (reference jetgate) and I wouldn't be surprised if he was involved in this, and the whole thing backfired on him.  Muschamp wanted no part in it and when the Texas opening came up he took it.  That would explain this big "misunderstanding".

You might argue that Muschamp had the opportunity to leave with the position at Southern Miss; however, he might not feel he was quite ready for a HC position and wanted one more year of experience under his belt.  He was willing to stick it out at Auburn one more year, but then the Texas opening came along. He did what was best for his family.

We wonder why Auburn can't win a National Championship.  Well, it's really no big wonder at all when we look at the overall picture.  We have a head coach that is constantly being challenge by board members that have no business in the atheletic department.  Jacobs is weak and cannot break free from his old boss.  And now, we find out there is some sort of big communications problems.

Continuity and consistency is the key to championships.  How can we achieve those two things with all this going on?

In any case, there is a big mess in the administration of the Atheletic Department of Auburn.  Wherever the fault is, Gogue needs to step in and fix this mess.

James......

that is some conspiracy theory you've got. Plausible? Yes. But who knows? Jacobs was in large a very unpopular choice for A.D. with everyone except the minority Lowder camp. He isn't the brightest bulb in the box and maybe that is coming to light as we speak (pun intended).

As far as the Southern Miss job that was offered to Muschamp.... not a good fit for several reasons but mainly because you don't want to follow their legendary coach who got pushed out because of his performance. Let's face it Bower did a fantastic job with the resources available. The problem is with USM Boosters and fans who, like their big brother to the north (Ole Miss), forgot who they were and wanted to be someone they are not and will never be (powerhouse). Because of Bowers success anything less or even equal will be percieved as a failure. The successor of Bower will have to do better than 7-5 and 8-4 yearly to be seen as a success and that is a tall order. Muschamp would be foolish to jump at the first HC job offer just because of the title (think Chizik or Greg Robinson -will only be there for a couple more years at best unless they can turn it around big time).

As far as the reference to Muschamp being a UGA man dont be silly Muschamp is a Muschamp man and will become a fan of which ever program he can establish his roots and success at (Pat Dye, Vince Dooley, Rich Rodriquez, Les Miles, Bob Stoops, Mark Richt, Mike Riley, Steve Spurrier, etc., etc., etc.....)

If Muschamp left because of either the complicity or ineptitude of the A.D. or Board of Trustees then I don't really blame him. But if he left for a few dollars and or a belief that he is going to be better courted for HC positions then he is a fool. And I still say "Screw Mack Brown and Texas" and I hope they lose every stinking game.

Yea,,,it was just something that occured to me this morning.  I usually am not one for conspiracies.

We all know that Lowder has it in for Tuberville.  We also know that Jacobs is a "Pat Dye" and "Lowder" man.  As you said, "Jacobs was in large a very unpopular choice for A.D. with everyone except the minority Lowder camp."

Personally, I don't think Muschamp left because of a few more dollars or that Texas was a beter place to get a HC job.  That doesn't wash with me either.  If Muschamp left because of all of the BS that is going on, who can blame him for that?  Whatever the reason for him not taking the Southern Miss job, he certainly saw something better at Texas than Auburn.

But no matter how you look at it, something stinks in the Atheletic Department and it is time for Gogue to straightend out.

Excellent article, Jay!

Especially the part about a $40M business needing a professional manager.  Long gone indeed are the days when the football coach pulled double duty as AD or got kicked upstairs eventually.  You risk looking like the Clampetts if you have the homers running the show...

James:  I don't really subscribe to the Lowder theory.  I don't think he would attempt nor could he be successful at prying apart any of the coaches from Tubs.

Guys, I have no doubt that we'll get another bright mind in there soon.  Anyone hear anything more about Orgeron's name being thrown out there?  Maybe I'm crazy, but I kinda like that possibility if Tenuta isn't available.  Also, what about Rodney Garner at Georgia?  Certainly he's a recruiting dynamo and a good DL coach.  Could he be ready to come home?  Is he ready for a DC position?

by War Eagle Atlanta on Jan 7, 2008 3:56 PM CST reply actions

Interesting.

.....I have the exact same opinion as War Eagle Atlanta. I think Tuberville can teach an eager young assistant to be a coordinator. Garner and Orgeron are outstanding recruiters. I'm not sure how much experience either has with DBs, though.

.....I just don't see Lowder deliberately sabotaging a coach. There are a wide range of opinions on the man, but one cannot doubt that Lowder loves Auburn. Frankly, I think he and his cartel lived through the backstabbing of Doug Barfield, and that period of poor leadership is what prompted Lowder to take over back in the early '80s.

.....Think about this, too. If an incomplete pass can cause a grown man to yell "Boom!, MF," on national TV, what kind of temper is he likely to have?

Knock those MFer's out!!!

Can you imagine Muschamp walking into Brown's office slapping high fives and uttering his infamous phrase above, referring to Auburn?  Nah, neither can I.

He was probably going to be gone next year anyway, guys.  No biggee.  Next!!!

BCS Championship game

Yet again Ohio State and the Big 10 are humiliated by an SEC team. Completely dominated. Maybe now the SEC can get a little love.

Hasn't Lowder already been able to "pry apart" coaches from Tubs?

We were tied for 14th with BYU (BYU???) in the coaches poll and 15th in the AP.  Not nshabby, considering our shaky start...

Mazzone came to The Plains with Tubs from Ole Miss in '99 and had been there with Tommy since '95. Tubs obviously thought a lot about Mazzone as a coach to bring him with, but in 2001 Tubs replaces Mazzone with Bobby Petrino. You gotta wonder about his outside motivation for that. Tubs was still new at AU and maybe didn't understand that "The Man Behind The Curtain" was really the spawn of satan; he was either forced or manipulated by Lowder into getting rid of a decent coach and longtime friend. Petrino as we all know is the coach Lowder wanted, seemingly, to replace Tubs from day one(Jetgate took place less than two years later).

John Lovett was canned the same year as Mazzone (I believe). His D was ranked 14th in the nation in 2000, got us to the Citrus Bowl and helped us win the SEC west.
Got this off his bio page at Clemson:
"In 2001, his defense had a lot to do with Auburn's berth in the Peach Bowl. One of Auburn's victories was a 23-20 triumph over then #1 ranked Florida. Lovett's defense held the Gators to 20 points,-36 yards rushing, and 328 yards of total offense, season lows in all three categories for Steve Spurrier's team that finished the season ranked third in the nation. The Tigers also forced five turnovers in the game, including four interceptions of passes thrown by Heisman Trophy finalist Rex Grossman. Lovett's defense also held Georgia's high-powered attack to but 17 points in a 24-17 Auburn triumph. His unit held Georgia to 203 yards in 2002, the fewest yards gained by the Bulldogs that season."
They got rid of him after this season!!

Neither one of these guys had the type of seasons that get you fired so one needs to wonder was there temporary insanity on the behalf of Tubs or were there other forces at work.

Thanks.

I guess few are privy to knowing what really transpired with that, but I wouldn't put anything past Lowder.  Isn't it about time for him to cough up another $10M for us to continue to put up with him?
