A Little Game Day Reading

Lowder2_275_medium

Lord Lowder?

Before I make the trek down I-85 for today's game, I thought I might throw up a link to a column that appeared on the Florida Gator blog Orange and Blue Hue this week about the sorry state of Auburn's football program and it's continual struggle to free itself from the grasp of Bobby Lowder. It's got some pretty heavy accusations in it, so take it with a grain of salt.

http://www.orangeandbluehue.com/2008/10/09/in-the-name-of-the-king-a-siege-tale/#more-1430

While detailing our recent history from the fall of Dye through the hiring and firing of Terry Bowden, the writer, Keltic Gator, doesn't notate where he gets any of his information. On the surface, some appears to be valid, some appears to be a stretch, and some I just don't know.  Read it and decide for yourself--it's a lengthy article, it'll take you a few minutes. At the end, he calls us a "second-tier academic institution", but he likes to take the occasional pot-shot at us. If you recall from last year, he's the one that wrote a scathing column on our fall from prominence right before we went down there and beat them at their house. I believe he still has a few pounds of crow left in the freezer that's he's yet to consume...

Lowder

Lowder is poison and if he continues his reign Auburn will maintain its downward spiral from prominence. When the alumni spoke out against him a few years ago, Lowder dismantled Auburn Magazine’s leadership and chief writers. Next, he attacked the Alumni Association and would have been successful if not for the courts. This guy has an ego the size of our football stadium. As someone once said, "There is a fine line between genius and insanity." If we continue to look the other way and let this mad king continue to rule over our university we will be all that our distracters say we are.

Well, if there's any consolation,

…..Colonial’s down to about $2 a share, right now. Lowder won’t be buying Tuberville, or anyone else out, right now. Lowder’s bank may well be the next WAMU or Wachovia.

Game Day Reading

Why in God’s name Eagle Atlanta do you want to post negative stuff from Auburn haters on this page? We have enough to deal with at this time without you aiding & abetting those that want to tarnish Auburn (regardless of the way you feel about Mr Lowder) Please stop and think the next time your tempted to impersonate bama propangandist Fienbaum . No hard feelings toward you , but lets leave the piling on to others .

Actually......

You may wish to deny it but it is fairly accurate with the story and related information that I was told by multiple sources during the meltdown of Bowdens tenure. Good post War Eagle Atlanta. Lowder is now and has been since his rise to power at AU our worst enemy and our biggest embarrassment. That is hardly piling on. If anything anyone who loves AU should hate Lowder.

You missed,,,

the point of my post. I was not denying the veracity of the purported gator story about Lowder. I was simply saying I do not want to give Auburn haters additional internet space for their vitrolic outburst against Auburn. Your free to hate whomever you please. But don’t imply I do not love Auburn because you differ withy my post.
I like what Ronald Reagan said " I prtactice an 11th commandment, Thou shalt not criticise a fellow Republican." Of course he meant in public. Within the Rep. ranks it was ok to disagree. Todd92 I believe it’s ok for ‘us’ to discuss, disagree, & sometimes criticise within our family. However I do not want to assist open Auburn haters in their attempt to make our school look bad. If you disagree… fine , because I hope we are in the same family.
War Eagle !

The source of the post......

should not be the point. The point is the basic story is fairly accurate and that picking apart periphereal facts to discredit the author is not only silly but ineffective. The entire nation has seen the story. Lowder has been written about by every major sports publication. The fact that many of the AU family has chosen to either ignore it or try and sweep it under the rug is sad. I don’t care who wrote the story thats not the embarrassment. The embarrassment is that its happened and yet the same people are still in power to do it again. Plain and simple the only person that has made AU look bad is Lowder. And I never said you don’t love AU. My last statement said it all. Love AU hate Lowder.

Really?

It is consolation to me. The silver lining of the economic collapse — Lowder in a soup line.

i found this on espn – http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2285976. how much do you want to bet that mike fisher doesnt ever get to cover auburn football games?

Reformation

I love Auburn and I bleed orange and blue, therefore I can’t stand by silently while Lowder not only ruins our football program , but more importantly embarrasses our University. One can be extremely loyal to our great university and speak out against a man who is putting himself above it.

There's a LOT of...

….unsubstantiated rumor in that piece. I can’t put any stock in the thing, because the writer has SO MANY of the facts WRONG! If he can’t get the details right, how can his speculation be taken seriously? I’ve been pretty busy the past week and weekend, and just now had the time to read this tripe. And no, I’m not a fan of Lowder, either. He’s really embarrassed us, lately.

…..In the second paragraph of the “Kingdom” section, Keltic Gator states that Bowden went 1 and 1 in bowl games. No, 2-1. Wins over Army and Clemson.

…..In the third paragraph of the “Kingdom” section, it’s stated that Wayne Hall, then Rodney Garner were fired. Garner was not fired. Bowden tried to move him to a non-coaching, recruiting only position, and Garner resigned. It was before the bowl game, in late 1995, not 1996. In addition, Hall was fired because Bowden didn’t agree with sitting back in a soft cushion defense, and giving up big play after big play. Penn State’s 29 point third quarter was the last straw, for Bowden.

…..In the “Siege” section, K. Gator leaves out the real seed of the animosity between Bowden and Jabba the Housel. Housel publicly, to the press, called out Terry Bowden on the 7-4 1996 regular season. Housel stated that a 7-4 season was unacceptable (despite Auburn posting 61 percent winning percentage over the past 50 years. 7-4 is actually pretty much the Auburn average.), and that Bowden would be punished with a lack of a contract review and raise, that year. It was one of the most embarrassing Athletic Director moments, to date.

…..In the second paragraph of the “Siege” section, Gator can’t get our lineup right. Demontray Carter was our STARTING running back, not the back up. And we actually lost SIX centers: TJ Dunnigan, Cole Cubelic, Mike Pucillo, Carl Lavine, Ben Nowland, and Colin Sears.

…..At the end of the “Aftermath” section, last paragraph. Keltic Gator states that Bowden was fired. He may have been “as good as fired,” but in reality, Terry Bowden WALKED AWAY in the middle of the season, leaving his players, that he recruited, to twist in the wind.

…..If Mr. Gator can’t even get the verifiable, newspaper and records facts correct, how can we believe him when he states that Bobby Lowder would sacrifice his own daughter’s reputation, just to justify firing a football coach?

I'm glad YOU finally read that...

But the part that I find most disturbing is the notion that Lowder still wields as much power as alleged in that piece…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Oct 13, 2008 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes but consider...

who is doing the alledging and more importantly why he even cares. Could it be he hates Auburn and will do whatever he can to embarrass us ? Why give him the time of day ? If we want to discuss Lowder or anything esle , let’s do it amongst ourselves. We don’t need to help him publicize his opinions.

I disagree

I’m a defender of the faith, and i’m not above shining a light into dark places. We don’t exist in a vacuum. Sometimes we need to know what others are saying about us, even if it involves staring into a mirror. That guy can’t write something like that, that he lifted from an amalgum of stories, rumors, and innuendo and not have someone call him out on it. I hear rumors, too, but I’m not about to write them down and masquerade it as a story. I guess as a blogger, maybe I’m expected to do that, but I won’t. Unless it’s about Alabama. See? Everyone has to have their standards…

:-)

I am not sure he...

sacrificed his daughters reputation as much as you think. It is more than about just firing a football coach. How do you quell the rumors about Bowden and his daughter without detailing the underhanded business that you are involved in and get completely embarrassed in the telling and lose every bit of power that you have acquired? I do not care for Keltic Gator or his intentions but the story involviing Wayne Hall, Rodney Garner, and the Lowder camp is pretty much the same one I was told by several boosters in the middle of it all. I don’t condone Bowden quitting mid-season but I believe his one mistake is easier to forgive than Lowders constant meddling and overlording. Bowden was gagged for a reason, Housel was given the hush job for a reason, Pat Dye is still on the payroll for a reason, Jay Jacobs was given the AD job for a reason (possibly the least qualified AD in the SEC and yes that includes Mal Moore)……. Nor do I think AU was as talent deprived as some would have us think at the end of the Bowden years….. How many of Bowdens players went on to the NFL (including Demontray Carter the running back that everyone said wasn’t good enough yet transferred to Troy and was on the Giants payroll a couple of years later)? The funny thing is some people have joked about the “tell all book” from franklin that may be coming, thats not the real concern for Lowder…..Its the “tell all book” from Tuberville that Lowder should be concerned about. By the way if you don’t think Bowden was fired then how do you account for the buyout and the gag order?

He starts the article off with inaccuracies.....
Bobby Bowden, head coach of FSU and currently the winningest coach in college football…

Right off the bat he is incorrect, no matter how you infer it.

The author states “College Football”, in college football the winningest (wins and percentage) coach is John Gagliardi at St John’s, a division III school in Minnesota. At the time the article is posted he is 456-124-11 = 77.2%. Bowden was (still is) 4th (in wins) at the time the article is written, at 377-120-4.

As for Division I-A, define winningest! Bowden is second behind Paterno in number of wins but higher in percentage. Paterno, again at the time the article was written, was 378-125-3 = 74.7. The winningest coach (percentage wise) in D1-A is “The Bear” at 78, Bowden is second there too at 75.2%.

Simple facts that took 2 mins to look up are inaccurate. I will admit I don’t know all the details of the Bowden’s tenure and departure, nor do I know all the details of Lowder and all the details of jetgate. But I do know that if an author disregards attention to detail, even little details then I am going to excercise caution about the entire article. Especially when the author is writing for a rival team.

ie Finebaum!!!

Bowden...

isn’t even the winningest coach in Div 1-A. A good portion of his wins came at Div II Samford, while all of Paterno’s have been at Penn State. As much as I like Bobby, he’s going to die #2 behind JoPa…
