Be Careful What You Wish For, Tiger Fans

Let's take the Lear Jet home, Casey.

This week has been two wishes come true for a good number of Auburn fans, Tony Franklin and the spread he rode in on got run out of town mid-week and Kodi Burns got the start on Saturday to work his miracles on turf. The lingering effects of the former will take a while to judge, but the results from the latter were on display for immediate review.

Whatever the kind of offense we're going to be, we better decide real quick and get on with it. If we're going to run a true spread, it's NOT going to be this year. We're going to have to wait for the next guru to come along and teach us. Are we going to go back to conventional power football or stay with the what I call the Spackle (a real slow moving spread that sticks in place, especially between down markers)  Let me tell you--I'm done with the Spackle. It looks abysmal. What good is a hurry-up type offense if half the time you're getting set, then all getting back up to cluelessly look over to the sideline en masse to get the play from the guys doing the YMCA? How many times Saturday did I see where their defense was caught off guard, trying to shuffle people in and out after a play, but we didn't do a quick snap? WE HAVEN'T DONE THAT ALL YEAR. That's one of the many problems of this offense--predictability.

I was looking forward to some more power football similar to that we layed on Vandy in the first quarter of last week--you know, the one that worked so well that we abandoned it? See, although Arkansas had the worst defense in the SEC, they were going to stack up eight in the box and force us to throw, so we DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO RUN. Come on! That's complete defeatism. You gotta at least try! Line up in the I-formation with a tight end or two and at least see if we could knock them in the dirt. Do you think they were going to be fooled by the one back with the QB in the shotgun? Half the times we saw that set, you knew Burns was going to take off running. My mom knew that, and she was at home watching Law & Order reruns...

We need to stop this finesse crap where the QB gingerly hands the back next to him the ball or does some sort of half-ass option and start pounding people. THAT will open up the pass. Heck, it'll open it up for Burns. If there's three guys in the backfield, it's a little easier to sell the QB keeper. Other than that, every play is going to be a QB draw or a pass. And maybe Burns can settle down in the pocket if he doesn't have to constantly run for his life.

You got to see what Burns could do for almost the entire first half, and although I wasn't really impressed, I don't blame it all on him. I'm convinced that Todd is a better thrower, but Burns has the running threat was was totally un-utilized Saturday night because of this Spackle offense we keep lining up in. Granted, Burns needs to learn to try staying in the pocket a little longer before he takes off, and learn to look other places besides the home run ball. I saw next to no passes out into the flats or any screens. That's totally inexcusable to not try those. Everything was across the middle or an intermediate range slant to the outside.

And poor Chris Todd. The guy feels like that when he does make it into the game, he has to do something miraculous quickly and he ends up trying to force something. You know how you give a guy like that some confidence? Let him establish a drive through a few rushing plays. The longer he stays out on the field, the quicker his confidence grows. All the boos for him were pathetic. For a minute, I thought I was in the Vet in Philly. Sure, even I was upset with some of his forced throws, but give me a break on booing him. We Auburn folk have our fair share of loser fans.

And what use is a good defense is we're going to leave them out there the whole game? They didn't have a chance. At one point in the third quarter, I noticed that the time of possession had Arkansas up by about 13 minutes. They ended up with a 35-25 advantage. That's pathetic. That's also what you get when you don't attempt to run the ball. Those guys couldn't keep chasing down that little guy Smith for Arkansas all night. He looked about five foot nothing, but he had some wheels. When you're pulling overtime on the defensive side, you have to collapse at some point, and we kept giving up the big plays--at least 5 plays over 40 yards, I think...

On the lighter side, your humble contributors, Jay, Acid Reign and myself met for lunch before the game to talk about all you behind your backs. Actually, we had a good time and discussed a lot about how the site is evolving. We had a big week last week in hits, probably owing to the Franklin firing, so I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all of you for your patronage. We regulars don't always agree, but it's starting to become a nice little community we have here.

One thing I will say, and I think I can speak for the three of us, is that we really don't endorse all the calls for Tuberville's head after every poor showing. Like Acid Reign commented yesterday, it would take government backing at this point to raise Tubs' buyout, so it's highly likely that he's going to be our coach for the foreseeable future and I'm perfectly fine with that. The man is deserving of our respect and you fair-weather fans that call for his ouster after every loss can go tell it on another site. Perhaps try Roll Bama Roll. You might find a sympathetic ear there. Either that, or I'm going to start putting up a Fire Tuberville thread every week where you can confine your vitriol there--kinda like the smoker's aquarium at Hartsfield airport in Atlanta. I guess it's best that we do that instead of some yay-hoo going out and starting a Fire Tubs website...

Bama sucks

I think alot of those hits were obnoxious bama fans wanting to see was was going on.

I once asked the question why are there so many Alabama fans that never graduated from the university? I was told its because their parents were fans and it was passed down.........(my response after a pause).....similar to racism.....?

My thanks

to you, Acid Reign, and Jay for all of your contributions. All three of you have keep this site going. I was glad to find this site, about a year ago, after I had had it with those clowns over on the AOL site.

Tubs has done a good job at Auburn. He has a clean program (that we know of) and he has a good graduation rate from the players.

I don’t think the redshirt should be pulled from Trotter. Trotter and Raymond Cotton are the future at QB. Leave Trotter alone and let him get better and learn the system. Give Kodi the reps and live and die by power ball the rest if the season. But, if Trotter’s redshirt is pulled, I am still behind Auburn, Tubs, and whoever is the starting QB.

Fair weather Auburn fans are not true Auburn fans. They have jumped on a bandwagon and don’t understand anything about being true orange and blue. I was at the game Saturday night, as I was at all home games this year, and the booing was really disturbing. It made me think of all of those fair weather fans. If you must boo, I had rather you stay at home. We should be there to support our team. Some may say they have the right to boo,,,,,they paid their money just as I did,,,,,,,but, maybe you should try to figure out why you are an Auburn fan. Are you an Auburn fan because you love Auburn, or because Auburn has won some games over the past few years. I have been going to Auburn games since I was eight years old so I know good years and bad. If you want to be an Auburn fan because you love Auburn, get on the bus. If it is because they have won some games over the passed few years, get on somebody elses bus.

Not The Spread

I must admit that I hate this Clemson-like weak a** spread offense, but what we are doing is not spreading the field its shrinking the field and making this a one man Quarterback dominated offense…………………………………this may work for Florida but last I looked its been 4 years since we had a quality quarterback. We are focusing our entire offense on the team’s one true weakness………………quarterback play.

Against Arkansas our talented group of running backed combined for a total of 13 rushing attempts (not a misprint our running backs had 13 rushing attempts for the game, not one series, not one quarter, not one half, 13 rushing attempts for the game, and we were winning for almost the entire game. We were not in catch up mode not chasing a lead not forced to pass on every play. Our coaching staff thought our best chance to protect the lead was to have our quarterbacks pass and run on almost every play. While our running backs were combining for 13 rushing attempts Burns and Todd combined for 19 rushing attempts yielding a total of 13 net yards…………………………less than a yard per carry.

Clinton Durst had as many offensive touches as Fanning and Lester combined, Lester arguably our best offensive weapon had ONE RUSHING ATTEMPT, no receptions………Todd had 4 rushing attempts. Our Spread offense also managed to complete a total of ONE pass to our running backs…………. Eric Smith for 2 yards.

We are going on 4 years of substandard quarterback play and our answer this year is to have the quarterback run or pass on every play……………………..our new strategy for protecting a small lead, pass on every play, first and goal on the 5, pass on every play, want to keep your defense on the field, pass on every play.

If you want to spread the defense get your backs involved so 8 defenders are not flying to the quarterback on every snap.

Kodi is our best QB and best chance to win.

Although I was not terribly impressed with the level of Kodi’s play against Ark on Saturday. It appeared the he was pulled after a tipped pass resulted in an INT. I though that he was starting to slowly develop a rythym and then low and behold Chris Todd trots out on to the field. Chris Todd is not a better QB and is not a better passer. In case you haven’t noticed, he completes a few too many passed to the other team. Although Kodi has thrown some INTs, a number of them have been on tipped balls. If the coaches would jsut leave him in for a while, he may have a chance to settle down.

I totally agree that the backs are not involved in the game nearly enough, but most of the backs have some nagging injuries.

The whole team will have a week and a half to rest and mend and hopefully we will see a better team on the field against WVU.

Don't

come to RBR if you want Tubs gone. Hell none of us think he should be fired, nor are we rooting for that outcome. Now that the playing field is equal, we want our chance to even the score on ole Tubs. What fun would it be for us if he was gone after this year?

I don't give a flying damn...

….about RBR. Never been there, don’t plan to. I’m about Auburn. Don’t care about Bama till the last week in November. War Eagle!

...What You wish For

Amen War Eagle Atlanta , I completely agree ! I would add that Everything rises and falls on leadership. I believe Tuberville has failed in that area recently . HOWEVER he has more than proven himself in the program and team that he has run in his tenure. He has stated that he has made a mistake and will straightened out the ship. I believe him and I say (no matter one’s thoughts on Franklin, the spread , which quarterback) IT’S TIME FOR ALL TRUE AUBURN FANS TO CIRCLE THE WAGONS !

As far as the coaching...

…I’d have to say that was the worst planned and coached gameplan I’ve seen since the 2003 season. It’s time to get back to basics…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Oct 13, 2008 10:02 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I have to question why we would...

…..put Barrett Trotter in, right now. It smacks of desperation. I’ve heard that he’s run the scout team offense well, with accurate throws, but we also know how well our starting safeties and linebackers cover the slot men.

…..Scenario: cold, rainy, high altitude game on the road at a very hostile stadium. Looking at the voodoo-land forecast, it’s going to be DIFFERENT weather for this one, methinks. Do we REALLY want to go in there with a wide-eyed true freshman getting his first start?

http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USWV0507?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared

…..“GO HOME, IF YOU’RE GOING TO BOO!!” I yelled that at the game, several times. It did seem to quiet ’em for a little while, when I did it. All of us need to call the boo-birds out, and maybe we can make it stop. In the end, a lot of ’em HAD gone home, by the time we were on the 5 yard line trying to win the game…

Are you calling my former home "voodoo-land"?

West Virginia is a beautiful place, full of anything BUT voodoo :) Unless of course you’re talking about Louisiana

No, that's a...

…..James Spann reference. Spann’s the weather guy on Birmingham’s ABC TV station. When he talks about long-range forecasts, he calls them “Voodoo-land,” and that such things aren’t terribly reliable.

sorry guys....but....

Chris Todd is a better quarterback than Burns. RIght now anyway. Burns may have him on potential, but right now Burns is not ready for SEC football or even FBS football. A lot of people remember the glamorous things that Burns has done, those flashes of brilliance, but these are not the norm. Burns has a 40% completion rate and a 65.79 passer rating. Todd has a 55% completion rate a 106.64 passer rating. I just can’t take anymore of this, Kodi. Kodi, Kodi, Kodi stuff! We saw what a Burns led offense can do Saturday. In the 1st quarter only Burns played he had 5 touches for 4 yards. The offense racked up 21 yards. In the second quarter. Burns had 11 touches for 28 yards and an INT. Todd was only in for one series after the pick and went 0-2 his only touches in the first half. Burns led offense in the first half….53 yards…….Third Quarter Burns has 12 touches 31 yards and an INT. He did rush for a TD after Todd got the team to 1st and goal and was replaced by Burns. Todd’s 3rd quarter saw him get 9 touches for 18 yards. Burns led offense through 3 quarters…..66 yards I adjusted for Todd’s 18yds( The offensive total through three was 84.) There is no 4th quarter stat sheet and I don’t have the time to go through the final and make adjustments.

Take these things for what they are. Just one guys opinion with a few stats for back up. Neither quarterback is very good, it is just my personal opinion that Todd is the best option for the time being. I don’t think either sees much playing time next year. Tubbs said in the postgame that they would explore other options at QB during the bye week so expect to maybe see Caudle some during the WV game.

Peace

I think...

…you are exactly right. Todd is the better QB choice for us, under one condition: that we abandon the last remnants of this spread where the QB lines up in the shotgun with one other back. No one respects Todd to run. We have to go back to a conventional set. That way there IS a running threat back there.

TODD Better QB

Chris Todd is definetly the better QB… I have been to every Auburn game this year and last year. Chris Todd makes better decisions.. stays in the pocket and when not having a defensive lineman or linebacker in his eyes before he looks up will complete his passes. Granted he is not a better runner but he seems to know the offensive plays. Kodi has great potential, I just dont think he performs well under pressure. He is great in practice, however when game time comes … he seems to clam up. Line up in the I-Formation Double TE and pound the defensive line… open up the pass routes and Auburn (WE) will be fine. Vandy is a great example. We ran, ran, and ran some more… but just because they stopped up on the goal line with almost 4 identical plays… and should have come away with 3 points… we SCRAPPED what was working. I cannot believe AUBURN FANS … BOOOOOED our player ! It is a crying same that the “band-waggoneer’s” will not become true AUBURN fans…. for me …. I BELIEVE in AUBURN … and I BELIEVE in TUBS. PLEASE .. get in the I-formation and play some AUBURN football next week at WV. I will be there with my ORANGE AND BLUE … Cheering for EVERY AUBURN PLAYER and COACH…

GOD Bless AMERICA , AND GOD Bless the AUBURN TIGERS

Agreed

More I-formation and double TE sets would be great. As for the booing…my brother was here on a visit and said he liked everything here more than Bama where he was last week except the booing.

My 2 cents:
We don’t have any deep threats, our receivers struggle just to make catches, and our quarterbacks are either inexperienced are weak-armed. What we do have is a stable of running backs, a powerful line, and an athletic quarterback who can run and improvise.
Why not implement some sort of spread-option, with the receivers and ends employed mostly as blockers? Mix in some short passes as necessary, matching up our receivers and backs against their linebackers. Don’t even try the deep play.
Which SEC defense is going to stop an option sweep led by a pulling Ziemba and/or Greene, accompanied by Lester or Tate, followed by Burns and Lester/Tate/Davis/Smith/Fannin?
Just a layman’s thoughts…

by atlWDE on Oct 13, 2008 7:20 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

seriously?

It took Burns 8 months last year to learn a hand full of plays, do you think he could possibly learn a hand full more in only two weeks? No way. I think that is Burns major downfall, he is apparently just dumb.
