Firing Tuberville would cause irreparable damage....
After reading Jay's article last week that Auburn suffered irreparable damage after firing Franklin, his article this week about whether Tuberville's job is on the line, all about Bowden's firing from Clemson and last but not least all the internet rumors, I have spent a lot of time this week thinking about where Tuberville really stands. After thinking about it all week I have come to the conclusion that firing Tuberville would cause irreparable damage.
Some mentioned in comments yesterday that he exhausted capital last winter with the talks about TAMU (which I contend Finebaum started) and Arkansas. I won't even talk about TAMU because again I think Finebaum started those rumors. I do not buy for one second that he was ever in talks with Arkansas. And no; I am not being naïve. Here is why. Why would he want to go to Arkansas? Don't give me the excuse because that is his home state. He has very few ties back to there now. His mom lives in Auburn, he just built a new house in Auburn and his kids are at the age where moving them would be really hard on them. Furthermore he is not even a graduate of Arkansas so you can't use the alma mater claim. And last but not least it wouldn't even be a lateral move, it would be a demotion. The man was hunting with Gran and Nall (if memory serves) as he does every year. As soon as the Arkansas media ran the story and he was made aware of it, when he came out of the woods-which for those of you who hunt half the reason you go hunting is to get away from society, he immediately dismissed the story. He didn't let it linger. Just because someone is in the state doesn't mean they are interviewing for the job. You know he and his family went skiing right before Christmas last year in Colorado with some other coaches' families. Was he interviewing the for Colorado State job? What if their ski trip this year takes them to Washington or New York, is he interviewing for the UW or Syracuse jobs? Having given my reason for not believing that he was ever in talks with Arkansas, I do not believe he exhausted any capital, as referred to yesterday, except for with the amateur (by amateur I mean those who are not paid professional bloggers like Barnhart, Low, Marshall, etc) internet bloggers and fans. His capital is his record and leadership, period the end - not PR for every rumor.
His record speaks volumes across today's CFB. Tuberville's record at Auburn is currently 84-36 and 109-56 in his career. And we all know the state the program was in when he took over. That record could be a lot more impressive because his record since getting a full stable of his recruits in house is 63-21 for 75% in the toughest most elite conference in the nation. Not to mention his record in big games and against top 10 opponents. All that success while never fielding an investigation by the NCAA and very few off the field incidents. Furthermore when he took over at Ole Miss, Ole Miss was on probation, Tubbs was able to win there too!!! As Jay pointed out, while at Auburn he is 7-2 against Alabama, 5-4 against UGA, 4-4 against LSU, 3-1 against Florida and 6-3 in bowls. And that doesn't include the other top 10 ranked teams that he has beat. Firing a coach with those credentials would not result in anything positive. It would be staunchly criticized, ridiculed and scrutinized by every major entity in college football, from the media, to coaches, to players, to recruits. If a school is going to fire a coach with that kind of success for having a sub par year in which he has already tried to fix (whether the timing is right or wrong is irreverent), all to allow the boosters to regain control or because he didn't win enough then no one is going to want to associate their career with Auburn for fear that one sub par year is going to result in a major overhaul. Want proof, as Tony Barnhart stated in his column on Tuesday, look no further than Nebraska and UA. And with regards to the media, as War Damn Zach pointed out in his article yesterday, we have looked dismal at best throughout the year and lost two games to boot before our loss last week. Yet were still in the top 25, being the ONLY two loss ranked team. If that isn't respect from the media I do not know what is!!! But that respect didn't come overnight. It came after 10 years of hard work and SUCCESS by Tuberville!!! It took 10 years to get over the debacle of the Bowden dismissal. And no one would argue that Tuberville trumps Bowden in success. I am telling you folks, firing Tuberville would cause irreparable harm as again college football as a whole would staunchly criticize, ridicule and scrutinize such actions.
Last and not least, believe me when I tell you that if he were to be fired he would be hired that same day or the next at the latest. Don't believe me, just look at Huston Nutt, he left Arkansas and was hired the next day by Ole Miss. And his record at Arkansas was 75-48; what program wouldn't want Tuberville? A school is not going to look at what some fans think of his ability to address every rumor that hits the internet or erroneously picked up by the media only to be squandered as soon as he catches wind of it. One comes immediately to mind, Clemson - and they are on the schedule in 2010 and 2011. Forget about his 66% winning percentage. The fact remains and is WELL known throughout college football the state of the programs when he took over and where he took or has taken them. Clemson and any other school would snatch up Tuberville as fast as they could clear their flight plans with the FAA.
For those who want him gone, I challenge you to name me the replacement who can do better and do better with his own stable of players? He is one of the top 5 coaches in the country!!! Like it or not, you are not going to win 10 or more games every year in this conference. No current SEC coach has nor has any SEC coach done so in their career!!!

Except Les Miles…34 wins in 3 years, and on pace for a 4th straight 10 win season. What a lucky moron.
Not as difficult when you show up and have NFL talent across the board
He’s done better than I anticipated, but the cupboard was overflowing when he showed up (and it still is)
To me the jury is still out on whether LSU will stay at this high of a level under Miles

The sentence before that states....
…and do better with his own stable of players?
Not a lucky moron at all. I will give Miles credited. He has done well the last three years. But I still stand by the fact that he has done well with Saban’s players. The next few weeks (dont look past Spurrier and the game @ South Carolia) and years will tell. Personally I think the beginning of the end came last Saturday when they had 51 hung on them but that is subject for another conversation. The fact is you are right Miles is 38-7 in 3-1/2 years and for that congrats.
You don't have to congratulate me...
I didn’t do anything.
What does it matter who’s players he’s doing it with? It’s not like his recruiting has slipped off of what Saban was accomplishing. (OK that is debatable but it is close) It’s not even like Saban’s players are out performing his. In fact the younger guys on our D (Miles’ players) have been out performing the veterans (Saban’s players) this year. Look at our surprisingly good QB play, Miles recruit. All of our RB’s, Miles recruits. Our entire O-line, Miles recruits. The disappointing play on our D line this year? Saban’s recruits.
Urban won with Zook’s players (who were pretty dang good btw) and the first season with the majority of Meyers recruits starting what happened? 9-4
Blowouts happen. Look at Auburn’s loss to UGA last year. Look at Bama over UGA this year. It’s part of football.
If LSU wins the SEC west this year, he will have exceeded everyone’s expectations, and he’d have done it with his own players.
you are right about Urban....
He has done well everwhere he has been but……he is winning with Zook’s players. So I say th jury is still out on him too, which is why again I state a stable of their own players. The one thing about Zook, that a lot of people dont realize is that he is one of the best recruiters in the country, just look at Illinois. They are loaded Zook just cant coach well. That is why UF was so good in the late 90’s. With Zook recruiting and Spurrier and staff, Stoops et al, coaching.
Fair enough you are right blowouts do happen.
I
don’t agree with you on Meyer. He won a BCS NC with Zook’s players but Zook sure couldn’t win with them. That might be even more impressive considering Meyer runs an offense that is predicated on having certain personnel. I will say this though, when Tebow is gone is when we’ll really find out about Meyer…
Agreed...
I wish we’d stop debating Miles’ competence as a coach. He’s a hell of a coach. LSU won in Jordan-Hare simply because he and his staff flat out-coached ours. We did not make adjustments in the 2nd half, especially on D, and got flattened. Give our new coordinator another season working with this staff, and hopefully that won’t happen again. (Let’s hope they’re all still around…)
And like Tuberville at Ole Miss, Miles more than proved his coaching merit at a second-tier program before even coming to LSU. We underestimate Miles at our own risk.
One thing...
…..I think SEC teams and staffs get more and more familiar with a coach’s schemes, the longer they play in the SEC. That’s why you often see a coach (like Meyer) take over a program, do very well for a time, then decline a bit. Every year is different, with all teams, talent-wise.
…..I got through calling Les Miles an idiot, last season, when be beat us with the late TD pass. At that point, his strategy had worked too many times, to call it luck. I like a coach who will go for the throat, anyway. Even if I HATE it when it’s our throat at Auburn… Saban knows what he’s doing, too. I didn’t figure Saban had the horses do do much this year on D, but I didn’t figure on Terrence Cody, and some of those other players stepping up. Watching Bama this year is like watching a clinic on the 3-4. It’s enjoyable to watch good football, regardless of whose colors it is.
Fire Tuberville, like, YESTERDAY!!!
Fire Tuberville and bring Al Borges back as HEAD COACH. He lives in Auburn (convenience), he’s not working (less expensive and he can start TODAY), understands the program (experience) and he can “Roll (Tide)” on the points (see 2004)!
It’s the OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION, PEOPLE! We know Auburn has a terrific defense. It always has. What they need is a new plan. So, it’s time for Tuberville to leave the Plains!
Really, now…who can go through so many offensive CO’s? Only Tuberville. I think it’s one or more a year.
That’s not team/coach/player management, it’s lunacy. How can ANY team get a handle on ANY offense if it changes every 15 minutes?
I think it is safe to say that Tuberville “does not play well with others.” So, it’s time to get him his own sand box…somewhere way away from Auburn.
War Eagle!
Ok lol this has to be Al Borges...
Because no one else in their right mind would ever suggest that. lol. Brings a whole new meaning to lunatic fringe fan.
This is pretty simple
CTT has brought some of the best years we have ever seen at Auburn and anyone who says he needs to be fired is a true idiot period. 13-0 in the SEC ?? Beat Bama 6 years in a row ???? Our fan base has changed so much(spoiled) through the last 10 years.

Tuberville has the ability to keep AU on top.......
and he will get it turned around, just give him time.
The solution may be rather simple
Tubs has already proven that he can win, and the defensive side of the ball has never been much of a problem, so why not just give Tubs the checkbook and let him hire the BEST OC that money can buy? Hire a proven offensive guru with a clean record who can recruit and pay him the Big Bucks. Also, allow him to bring several assistants with him if he wishes. Tubs probably won’t stay for more than another 3-4 years, so it may even be an opportunity for to hire the next head coach.
What say you?
And...
the problem seems to me that no matter who Tuberville goes our and hires for OC, Tubbs isn’t going to let him bring his offensive coaches with him. Franklin has had success everywhere he has been, Borges was a desired coach at one point, but Tuberville is loyal to his assistants.
If.......
the position coaches are truly the problem Tuberville will rectify it. His loyalty will not get in the way of his success. Franklin took the job and failed. If he thought he should have brought in position coaches then he should have or not taken the job. I have been told by several people that Franklin got the axe when and where he did due to his beligerence to Tuberville in Tubs office at a very high volume. I don’t care who you are you can be replaced especially if you belittle your boss.
I think
we will see him let some of those “protected” coaches go after this season. I’m hoping he learned his lesson from the Franklin fiasco and will now allow OC to bring some assistants
