Et Tu, Brute?
It must be hard to go through life smarter than everyone else.
Our old friend Terry Bowden is up to it again. The firing of his brother, Tommy at Clemson this week was just too much for him to keep his mouth shut. So you might imagine that he'd come rushing to his brother's side and defend him and say that Clemson made a big mistake.
Guess again.
Just as Terry was loyal to his players during the 1998 season, he's followed the same path with his oldest brother. This week, Bowden said that Tommy deserved to be fired from Clemson. Ouch! Here's part of what he had to say...
"So, did Tommy Bowden deserve what happened to him Monday?
Unfortunately, yes.
He deserved it because he, of all people, knew what to expect when he got into this business. We grew up in it.
He knew what to expect when he went to Clemson. He knew that no matter where you go, there is an expectation of success that must be met. After nine years at Clemson, he knew exactly what those expectations were and he knew they had not been met.
Clemson expects to win the conference championship once in a while - and they should. After 10 years of falling short, they deserve the right to try to find a coach they believe can get them there."
Maybe Tommy Bowden deserved to be fired, but he still has more class than Terry ever dreamed of having and certainly deserved better from his brother. You don't have to write everything you think. What a joke - and a shame.

Over a hundred...
…..Division I teams to write about, and he choses to take a shot at his own brother. Amazing. I don’t think anyone would have batted an eye at even a “no comment.”
He does have a blog to fill...
That’s where the comments came from…

Geesh
And he wonders why he cannot get a Coaching Job. What a tool.
If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.
It still baffles me.....
how a large majority of the AU nation has animosity towards Terry Bowden. I would call that misguided disdain. Terry Bowden was not the bad guy he was made out to be by the powerful few….you just bought into the rumor mill. And as far as Terry Bowden taking up for his brother? Big deal he’s telling the truth not getting all indignant like daddy Bowden. Tommy underachieved by never winning a single championship at Clemson especially when the FSU and Miami programs have been down. Does that mean I think he should have been fired? No (I don’t have a dog in the hunt) but it shouldn’t surprise him. If my brother does something stupid or fails at a task is it my job to take up for him? No its his job to succeed or fail. He’s an adult and if he can’t take it he’s in the wrong business. If Terry Bowden avoided the subject would that make him less credible? Perhaps. I don’t care one way or the other my only comment is why the cheap shots at Terry Bowden every chance you get? And before you say it Acid….Yes I realize he left midseason much like Tommy at Clemson. I don’t condone his quitting mid season but I do blame Lowder more than anyone.
I guess some say blood is thicker than water

Rightly or wrongly...
….Terry Bowden burnt bridges at Auburn, with high school coaches, and presumably with those who hire coaches in the NCAA. Bottom line. I still don’t think I’d call out my little brother on a blog, and say that he didn’t get the job done, regardless of reality. Let other people say the bad stuff about your family.
…..On the other hand, I don’t think we’ve EVER had as good a teaching/planning/strategy staff, before or since. Terry could run an offense, and call plays, if he had a few players. I think he proved that time and time again. If he learned a little diplomacy, I think Terry Bowden could make someone a great college coach, again.
I agree with you Acid.
I thought the same thing, that Terry Bowden is one of the best coaches Auburn ever had, and maybe one of the best coaches in the 20 years in all of college football. It is a shame he was such an unlikable guy and bad recruiter. Several of the players I knew when I got to Auburn that played for Bowden always said that they hated him. Some of the stories about how Bowden treated some of the players and acted around them, mainly things like he didn’t know a lot of their names and such.
As far as him saying that his brother deserved to get fired, he would have done better just saying nothing, but he is probably a little bitter about not grabbing another coaching job.
His statements..
weren’t that out of line. It’s the truth. All college programs expect success. You can be the nicest most generous coach in the world, but that doesn’t gaurantee wins. And wins are what a big time Div-1 college expect. I’m not supporting the firing of Tommy Bowden becaue I think he is a great coach but it makes sense.
