Tigers Fall Flat After Dark
Auburn offense falls down, goes "boom."
.....The Auburn Tigers roared into Nashville with a bruising attack, but failed to sustain as the sun set, and suffered a dismal 14-13 loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores. The sun has set on Auburn's championship chances, as well. Auburn will now be playing for pride, and bowl position, hoping to play spoiler to the likes of Georgia and Alabama.
.....The Auburn offense, for the third week in a row, unveiled some new plays, most notably, the zone-stretch handoff out of the ace formation. This was called to Ben Tate about 4 times in a row, and had us first and goal. Vandy stiffened, though, and Auburn was held out of the endzone. Auburn then mixed in a little spread, and an offset I, with basically the same runs. Chris Todd made some nice throws downfield when asked to, and we rolled over Vandy for a quick pair of touchdown passes.
.....After the first quarter, the mistakes mounted. Vandy figured out that we only have one blocking tight end, and that the runs were always going to that side. It also appeared that Chris Todd's arm wilted. Suddenly he was unwilling or unable to throw past the line of scrimmage. With costly first down penalties, and predictable runs for nothing, we ground to a halt, while Vandy started moving the ball.
.....In the second half, Vandy started zone blitzing nearly every down, and Auburn could not pass the ball past the line of scrimmage, and runs were largely being stuffed for no gain. Auburn's halftime adjustment was to totally abandon the running plays that did have some first quarter success, and take away blockers against the blitz. Even underneath, there were a few drops, and dubious downfield blocking, as the receivers played their part in the failure, too. I've tried to be positive, but it's pretty obvious now, that we're looking at the worst offensive mess since Earl Brown. Can it get any worse?
.....Special teams took a step farther backwards, with the absence of Robert Dunn. While there were no fumbles, we let the ball hit and roll, WAY too much. Even without a returner threat, we failed to go after Vandy's punter. Vandy was using wide splits, odd formations, and rugby kicks. They were vulnerable, but we didn't even try it. Kicking woes continue. Numerically, we lost the game on a missed extra point. Even Clinton Durst seemed to be affected, with shorter punts, and we did not tackle well on those returns, either.
.....The loss of SenDerrick Marks and Jeraud Powers hurt the defense, too. While we held Vanderbilt under three hundred yards, while spending a lot of time on the field, problems continued. We lost receivers on the slant, on third down, till at least midway through the 4th quarter. The only thing that held Vandy's passing yards down were drops, and missed throws. We also had missed assignments on the sprint option, and we continue to give up dozens of yards on 3rd and long to the quarterback draw. The middle linebacker MUST take out the quarterback on that option, but frequently, there was no one there.
Grades
Defensive Line: B-. This was easily the strongest aspect of the Tiger team, in the Vandy game. Even without Marks, the Tigers got penetration and shut down most of Vandy's run game. Quarterback pressure wasn't as good as earlier games, though. The Tigers couldn't get consistent pressure with a 4 man rush. Points off on ends losing contain on the option, as well.
Linebackers: C-. This really should be a split grade, with outside linebackers doing better, and the middle guys doing worse. Merrill Johnson made a bunch of good stops for losses. On the other hand, where are our linebackers on third and long? They don't rush. They don't impede the slants. They don't cover the tight ends. They don't even stop the QB draw. Where are they, particularly in the middle?
Secondary: D+. We can run, and we can tackle guys after 15-20 yard gains. But we're a step slow covering, usually late. Neiko Thorpe faired decently, when they tried to pick on him, but we had problems on the other side. Our safeties cannot deal with square-in routes. On one of Vandy's touchdowns, we couldn't even knock down a pass aimed at the safety's chest. Had we faced a better passer, and had fewer drops, this could have been a 300 yard passing day for Vandy.
Punting: C+.We placed an emphasis on high punts, and several times, Durst had a chance to pin Vandy deep inside the 20. Our first man down, though, and usually our second, always leave their feet, trying to blow the return man up, and they miss. We're having far too many broken tackles on the coverage.
Punt Returns: C. We let several of these things roll, and the blocking was fair-to poor. Chris Slaughter improved the handling, but we're no longer a threat to block any punt, nor hurt anyone with the return.
Kick Returns: C. We improved here, with better security up front, and slightly better blocking. We averaged about 20 yards per return, which puts us back in the mediocre category.
Kickoffs: B+. There was improvement here, as we got down the field and got after return man D. J. Moore, limiting him to 15 yards per return. We still need to be able to kick some for touchbacks, however.
Place Kicking: F. We missed an extra point, and took a delay of game on a potential long winning field goal. In a one-point loss, that's total collapse.
Offensive Line: D. I only give this high a grade because of a strong first quarter running the ball. Our recognition, and line calls against the zone blitzes were horrible. We continue to get false starts and holding penalties by the bushel. Both tackles are getting taken to the cleaners by SEC defensive ends, regularly. Something's got to be done, here, or we have no chance to move the ball in the SEC.
Receivers: D-. They don't get open. When they do get open, they drop it. Three drops in the second half. They don't block well. They don't fight for balls. Where was Rod Smith on the last throw? Looking back, watching the interception. Even when we scored, once, two receivers ran the same route and nearly took each other out with the collision.
Running backs: B+. Hurculean effort by Ben Tate. Had little help, though. Fannin had a few cameos back there, as did Lester. Tate was the only one who had a chance to pick up the blitzing back seven guys, the others never could see it coming. I think Tate went over a hundred yards rushing. One thing's clear, we need more blockers!
Quarterbacks: D+. Barely 50 percent completion percentage, less than 100 total yards passing. Todd looks great in the first quarter, but his throws lose zip as the game goes on. The Commodores were ready for Burns to take off. His longest run was 4 yards. That deep corner route to end the game, was a high school throw. And it never should have been thrown, with cover-two and wide safety splits.
.....We seem to be regressing in many phases of the game, each week. To me, a loss to Vanderbilt is every bit as devastating as the loss to South Florida a year ago. And it's made even more painful by the fact that we abandoned an offensive gameplan that was working in the first quarter.
.....Our offense is an undisciplined mess. We have some talent, but it's not being utilized. We've got to simplify, even down to a half-dozen plays, if he have to. We can't win with all of the penalties, missed blocks, dropped balls, bad routes, and poor throws. It's pretty dismal, and it seems to be getting worse every week.
.....One thing has been made abundantly clear. It's time for a meeting. Now. The head man needs to make a change. Not at the end of the year. Not next week. Not next month. Fire Tony Franklin. Fire him now. Our players deserve better!

Nearing Anarchy
Our players absolutely dont believe in tony franklin. His little high school offense and his poor scheming have left us confused and frustrated. No one, not even Tubs, is truly buying into this $3200 offense. The “guru” looks like he used some used car salesman tactics on tubbs and now here we are. I tubby wont fire him, maybe the A.D. can. War Eagle
I only came in...
…on the tail end of Jack Crowe, Acid, but I’ll trust in your judgement.
This is painful watching a football team with this much talent not being given the right tools to do what they can do.

"Can [the offense] get any worse?"
You may not want to know the answer to that question, Acid!
Hell, I would be OK with firing Franklin and giving OC responsibilities back to f’ing HUGH NALL at this point….

Shooting at the Wrong Guy
There you go again. Blaming everyone but the guy in charge. Let me set you straight…It’s Tubby folks! He hires (coaches and players alike), he set the expectations, and he has the authority and accountability to intervene when and where necessary. How many more signs do you need? Why do you continue to give Tubs a free pass here and blame some underling? What kind of teflon is this guy wearing?
(And again – I am not just looking at this season!)
Knee jerk reaction my #@%$* !
i sadly, agree
i’ve been seeing it for years, but Tubs might be…yeah …he is, the most overrated coach in the nation. i love him, but damnit…he knows how to choke. any realist Auburn fan will admit that one bad call that went our way in 2004 is the only reason we went undefeated and that it’s been diminishing returns ever since. the 2006 Auburn team SHOULD have been a national title contender but went out and laid an egg in the Arkansas and Georgia games and ever since that it’s been a downward spiral. if Auburn beats Ole Miss, i will be surprised. if i was a betting man i’d say 7-6 looks pretty damn likely.
I think Lowder...
…..Is going to give Tuberville enough rope, this time. Otherwise, we’d have heard something today. Tub and Franklin will be given the rest of the season to improve (and I certainly hope we do!), or we’ll continue to embarrass ourselves to the point that no one will question a firing. Banking execs have bigger fish to fry, these days, anyway.
…..Anyone else here alarmed that the Sunday paper was full of articles about how companies can’t make their payroll because of credit drying up? Making payroll on credit? Are we that far gone? Not sound at all, at least not what I was taught in those classes in Thatch Hall, so many years ago!
i love how thinking Tubs is overrated makes me a supporter of that douchebag Bobby Lowder. i guess being a realist isn’t welcome here. blame Tony Franklin it’s all his fault that Tubs switches QBs or goes into the Tubershell in close games or can’t beat LSU the last 2 seasons.
I love how.....
thinking a coach is overrated just because he has the best record in the SEC over the past 5 seasons +/-, has one of the best W-L records in the country since 2001, recently went undefeated, has kept the program squeeky clean, defanged our totalitarian dictator (impish emperial trustee Bobby Lowder), not to mention has owned the bammers for 6 years now. Now who is the realist and who is the fairweather fan?
Is it...
The coordinator, or is it the players? I don’t think you guys would be half as bad if you didn’t have a Spencer Pennington-ish quarterback.

PS:
There’s still hope. Look at how poorly Alabama’s offense performed against Kentucky’s defense. I’m quite certain your guys’ defense is two times better than theirs is.

Just Line Up under center and let Tate Run???
That might possibly be one of the worst games I have seen Auburn play in years if you take out the first quarter. They had it going until Tate gets stopped with 1st and goal and can’t pound it in 1 yard???? Then we just abandon the running game altogether?
I also don’t think swapping QB’s in and out helped at all, sorry but the “spread offense” is no offense for this team. You know they played hard, but to come up 1 point short against a team we haven’t been beaten by since 1955? Yikes.

Actually AU.....
ran the 2 tightend set most of the 1st quarter and it was abandoned during success……which is more perplexing.
We could be 0-4 in SEC play
Just realize that we have played so poorly on offense and special teams that our Tigers could be 0-4. Call it what you want but this Tubberville/Franklin offense has reduced us to the pre Dye spoilers. We can not accept the role of spoiler again. It is going to be a tough season.
I was hopeful that Tommy had taken lead this week and straightened some THINGS (TF) out but it only lasted 2 series. I’ll be pulling for the guys at home next Saturday vs. the hogs.
Go Tigers! Now I feel like a Braves fan in college football!
This is pitiful.
I have tried to be positive about my beloved Tigers this year, but, I now have lost all hope in this offense.
I said last week, after that dismal finish against Tennessee, that out offense looked confused. Now, the players are actually coming out and saying it. What is going on with this team? At this rate, we will be lucky to win homecoming.
FIRE FRANKIN NOW!
WAR EAGLE
Now I am rested.
Alright. I wanted to sleep this game off and eat a good breakfast before commenting and here we go.
Fire Franklin and if Tubberville says anything in the process to defend him, fir Tubberville too. Tommy should be very aware of what is going on with the team at this point. Now the reason I am so harsh on Tubberville, while he isn’t responsible for the offense directly, he IS responsible for the discipline of the team, and the discipline of our offense is horrendous. Here are some quick stats that I assembled that are close I believe.
TOP for Auburn first quarter. 12 minutes to 12:30 out of 15. Rest of the game: around 17 minutes.
Offensive yards. 150 to 175 under center running the ball. 29 yards in the spread for the rest of the game.
Points. 13 points under center. In spread formation, we almost scored two points on a safety on Vandy, other than that, no even remotely close to scoring on offense.
The thing that gets me the most out of this game is the fact that Tubberville sat by and let us lose. If I was coach (and I understand I am not), I would have told Franklin to beat it at halftime when I realized that Franklin is dead-set on proving his offense will work, despite it not working in the slightest. I hope to god that Franklin isn’t dumb enough to come out to the press and talk about how he made mistakes, he is a dumbass, blah blah blah. If he speaks to the press it should be an announcement of resignation.
I have come to realization of not raising my expectations for the offense now, but 29 yards in 3 quarters is embarrassing. The players are only going to get more frustrated the longer that Tubberville sits by and does nothing to rectify this situation. And if anyone says a word negative about our defenses performance Saturday, I might drive to their house and beat the tar out of them, the defense was hung out to dry worse than I have ever seen. Out of the last ten drives our offense were on the field, we went 3 and out or worse in 6 of them. Our longest drive in that run was a 3:42, 7 play drive that went for -2 yards. Yep, that is how bad our offense is, we had three drives for negative yards.
i know we want to blame the coaches...
but the fact is that Vandy is a better quality team in talent and in execution. Even if Tate had ran the ball more, Vandy’s D would have stuffed that and forced Todd to throw picks. Vandy is the better team and we are just not that great anymore.
brandonh,
Vandy may be better coached, but they cant hold Auburn’s jockstrap when it comes to talent.

Corky you are out of your element.......
if you think that Vandy has more talent. And as far as the execution that was indeed the difference in the game…..at least for the last 3 quarters. Vandy was not the better team they were the better coached team on offense for 3/4 of the game and that was the difference.
I love Auburn fans making excuses...
“Vanderbilt was not the better team, they were the better coached team.”
This couldn’t be more amusing. Did you watch the same game I did? Vanderbilt took Auburn’s best punch and then was stronger than the Tigers in the second half. I know it’s difficult to accept, but Vanderbilt was a) tougher, and b) wanted this game more than Auburn did.
It’s been fun seeing the reaction of SC and Ole Miss fans earlier this year, and how closely it mirrors the reaction of AUB fans today: “We’re a better team with more talent.” “We gave the game away.” I’ll make you a deal: You guys keep making excuses, and Vanderbilt will keep winning.
I hate to say it...
but you are right. We were out-coached, out-performed, and out-classed. We were beaten on every side of the ball and we have no excuses. Maybe it will be a few years until we can get some talent to run this spread. Until then, we can expect to lose most games.
I will be rooting for Vandy
I hope you do go to a bowl game and hell I would love to see you defy all odds and win the east. But don’t get to full of yourself and if you think Vandy was the more talented team on the field your IQ must be less than the typical Vandy student. Don’t be so cocky and be glad you’re witnessing the once in a century Vandy team because you will not see another 5-0 start in your lifetime much less another 3-0 start in the SEC. get a grip and enjoy it while it last.
they do have more talent one the most important area’s of all. QB and Headcoach. if Bobby Johnson isn’t the best coach in the SEC then i don;t know who is. wins over The Vols, Georgia, and now Auburn…plus a near upset of Florida a few years back with only a handful of guys who have NFL talent is all you need to say. and Vandy’s backup QB is better than anyone we’ve got by a long shot.
We do have more talent
They outplayed and outcoached us for sure, and they were tougher and wanted the game more. How can it not be both?

Exactly
They’re not mutually exclusive at all.
That said, I think our staff does a good job of finding hidden talent. In other words, Auburn has an immense recruiting star advantage, and probably somewhat less of a talent advantage. But still a raw talent advantage; I don’t think anyone disputes that.
Yeah
I was telling my friend earlier…
Auburn has better football PLAYERS
Vanderbilt has a better football TEAM

Good, not Great
Frankly, we just aren’t that good. It happens, it happened to Nebraska, Miami, and Notre Dame. Patients, don’t fire anyone. They could be Shanahan.

quarterback(s) is our main problem
Todd & Burns are not SEC caliber qbs. With AK and an off week coming, let’s get Caudle ready…
i was wondering when the calls for Caudle were gonna come. i mean wasn’t that kid a four star Elite 11 recruit? or hell, throw Barrett trotter in their. let’s see what the freshman can do. it’s kind of obvious that neither Burns nor Todd has got it…be it injury or lack of talent or whatever.
god i hope that Ray Cotton kid is as good as advertised cuz it looks like we might be playing a true frosh next year.
You know....
I really expected the QB battle to include caudle from the beginning but it never came to fruition…..And Barrett Trotter was a hell of a QB in High School.
