Changes On The Plains?

Well I was WRONG in a big way with my "breakout game" prediction. With that said the players seem to be losing complete faith and I can understand why. Here are a few quotes from players after last nights coaching breakdown. Regarding the changes, see the quote from Rod Smith below.

Kodi Burns
"We've got to figure something out," said Burns. "This -- man, I don't know. This isn't the Auburn I saw when I was recruited. This isn't the Auburn I saw last year. I don't know what's going on. "We've got to figure something out."

Rod Smith
"I don't know what we are right now – the spread, old Auburn offense. I'm just really confused right now," receiver Rod Smith said after the game. "Everybody is confused."

Smith said that Tuberville told the team after the game to expect big changes on offense, possibly as early as Sunday. Smith said he didn't know what those changes would be, only that they would "probably be drastic changes".

Here is some interesting info I found In a 7-23-08 article on ESPN.com:
Fact is, Franklin was unofficially blackballed from college coaching after writing his book about the rule-breaking and backbiting that undermined the Hal Mumme era at Kentucky. College coaches talk a lot about integrity, but the one thing they most prize are staffers who keep secrets. Franklin wouldn't do that, and it kept him out of college coaching for years. He wound up filing for bankruptcy.

"I've gotten a taste of it with my business in Texas and in Alabama," Franklin said. "They're very serious about it in both states. On the high school level in Texas, if you have a bad season, they'll fire you in the middle of the school year.

"The difference in Alabama? If you have a bad season, they'll kill you."

I don't think I would go that far, but the firing in the middle of the season seems rational.

I still can not figure out CTT decision to go for it on the first drive, we should have kicked the FG, I know we were moving the ball. With our D and the way the O had played all year we needed those points and that along with the mised extra point cost us the game. We will get things worked out, I personally will still live and die on each play next Saturday !

War Eagle !!!!!!!!

I disagree with the last paragraph.

I don’t question the call to go for 6 on the first drive, i think that we needed it to make a statement that we still have life in the offense and it failed. I didn’t work out but I still think it was the good call.

This offense is dysfunctional right now and they need to find some confidence and stability. We looked so good and so comfortable under center in the first quarter and then went back to chaos and the penalties started. I would love to actually know who’s call it was to abandon the Ace after the first three drives.

Mattco,
I understand your point of view, I just look at the body of work from the O and the D and think the 3 was the way to go. I know hindsight is 20/20.

Had we stayed in the Ace.....

or at least ran it a good percentage of the game after the first quarter we would not be lamenting the failed 4th and goal call. Like you said hind sight is 20/20, but I kept thinking that they would go back to the 2 tightend set and they never did. 126 yards of offense in the first quarter and less than 100 the rest of the game kind of speaks volumes. The problem is Tuberville is recruiting for the spread and is almost finished. Its kind of late to start the recruiting over so if Franklin does get fired midseason look for a spread coordinator to be hired asap. I think Franklin will be running a 2 tight end set at least 50% if he stays for the remainder of the year.

Evidentally he is in the clear according to CTT

CTT is the one to fire him and he didn’t. If he wouldn’t do it after last nights game I doubt that he will before the season is over. Can’t someone else do it for him? I think he won’t let TF go because he was the one that fired AB in order to hire him in the first place. Fact is, CTT should have intervened early in the game. It was obvious long before the game was over that his OC was messing up big time. Had the team all torn up. Too many errors were made by the players, yes, but when the coaching staff has them running in circles what can you expect!?

No change....expect same results....

I see no indication that anything is changing, so expect the present outcomes to continue. To fix a problem in a computer malfunction you must determine the ROOT cause. AU can’t own up to the ROOT cause so it is likely to continue to crash and burn until we face the truth. Why we run the same plays that have not produce any real positive results in the past OVER and OVER makes me wonder if some one calling the plays is mentally ill.

I’d sure like to see some emotion from Tubbs. It appears he don’t care like the Auburn faithful do.

Sonya,
He did a interview on ESPN last week and was going on and on how he had never had so many recruits commited this early in October and he felt that was a product of the spread. And that is true, I just don’t Franklin is the man. As referenced this guy has broken the code in the coaching business and filed bankruptcy. He just plain sounds like a loser to me.

Honestly,

….I think a lot of Franklin’s ideas are revolutionary, and have merit. Unfortunately, he’s shown that he can’t scheme. Can’t make adjustments. Can’t call plays. He scripts ‘em up, but if game conditions change, we’re just throwing random plays/routes/runs out there. It’s like the old days of Jack Crowe. Guys, a draw isn’t going to work on 3rd and 15, unless you have a legitimate chance of chucking it that far for the first down! We’ve run that thing, over, and over again. Wasted plays…

…..Last two plays… QB runs out of a fairly stable pocket, and sits down without being touched. Then, we decide to load up on a deep corner route out of our own endzone. Maybe we catch ‘em in a blitz or something. A prayer. WHY not put a stronger-armed quarterback in there for it? Someone who has a prayer off getting it over a deep cover two? And why can’t the quarterback check out of it, when the safety is sitting on top of the route?

i’ll honestly be surprised if Franklin actually gets fired in the middle of the season….i mean just as far as how it would effect auburn’s recruiting class…we’d be pretty fucked. we obviously can’t afford to lose out on Ray Cotton because it’s pretty obvious we don’t have a QB on this team…not unless we wanna start running the triple option and put Fannin back under center…hmmm…actually that appeals to me and my love of cromag football. that’s it! let’s just turn into GA Tech and run the damn option. it’s working for them. they put up alot more than 3 points on Miss St.

Do something, Franklin, just do something...

I couldn’t agree with you more, suicidewatch. With all the freakin talent on this team, why the heck can’t we try something new. Put Burns, Fannin and Lester in there and run the speed option. Just do something. And it makes me sick to hear Tuberville talk up a player in the week leading up to a game (Burns weeks ago, Fannin last week) and then game time comes and the offense does very little if anything with that player. Sure, Fannin scored as a receiver against Vandy, but I read articles about “Mr. Versatility” (Fannin) being looked at much like Darren McFadden had in a termed “War Eagle Formation”. Not once did they even try it. Was that the media or Tuberville creating false hype?

Regardless, Franklin has his mind locked into a “perfect scenario” of offensive players and schemes. Unfortunately for him there is no perfect fit for his offense at this point. Therefore, he should be creative enough to develop something that works with the talent he has. However, there is absolutely no creativity what-so-ever, despite having so many purely talented players available. Instead, we hear excuses of why this isn’t working and why that can’t happen. Losers make excuses. Winners do what it takes to…WIN!!

Being an offensive coordinator requires game-planning and schemes, but there must be adjustments made. You have to have some flexibility when something isn’t working because that’s how the SEC works. The defenses are fast and the coaches are very intelligent. If you can’t make adjustments then you don’t deserve to coach an offense in the SEC. Watching Franklin’s stubborn ass continue to force something (read option left, read option right) no matter how little it works is just pathetic. This guy has poisoned our offense and our entire team, and Tuberville better make the proper moves to ensure the season is salvaged, the team builds confidence with itself again, and the rest of the coaches work together for a successful end.

Wishbone formation

Burns at QB, Tate at FB, Fannin and Lester at the wingbacks, two TE.

I promise you it would work better than what we’re currently running

I bet your WR's would love that.

All those small speedy guys who can’t block who you recruited would love it even more.

All I'm saying is it would work better than what we're currently running

You think Chan Gailey recruited for a flexbone look at GT? It’s working out OK on offense over there, isn’t it?

Opening Drive Success

I think it is very telling that we have pretty good success early in the game. Just look at the 1st quarter of the Vandy games. Didn’t score every time, but drove pretty well.

However, after Vandy’s D Coordinator had a chance to react to what Auburn was doing, we never had success afterwards.

Early on, it was Chris Todd, the “Throwing QB”, handing off and us running the ball.

Later in the game, Todd came in to throw, poorly I might add, and Burns came in to run, poorly, I add again.

We have 2nd and 1 with the game on the line and wind up requiring a herculean effort out of Tate to get the yardage on 4th. By all means, on short yardage, run east and west. I think we all no that is by far the best way to pick up short yardage.

The saddest thing in all this is…we have a defense that could put us in a serious BCS bowl with just the smallest contribution from the Offense.

I don’t think the problem is the I, Spread, etc. Its the plays called.

VS Tenn, the plays called by Clawson were good, sound plays. Tenn failed in execution. While we at times fail at execution, I more frequently question the plays called.

Its obvious that change is needed. We need a direction and an identity. I think Tate and Lester are good backs and could carry the team given some good plays called….not predictable.

After watching the game a second time.....

it looks as though our offensive line does not know or have confidence in their assignments when running the spread. Is that possibly a reflection of Nalls lack of ability in coaching the spread or the lines lack of atheticism? I think it may be a little of both. Also, our running backs repeatedly failed to pick up the blitz. I don’t know what the answer is but it looks like our strengths in the power running game (ie., our O-line and RBs) are a glaring weakness in the spread. And if Franklin is fired at the end of the season I expect Coach Tubbs to replace him with another spread guy. That being said our offensive line needs to be much improved and our backs need to learn to read the blitz better to run the spread. As I have said repeatedly Kodi is not and has not been the answer, but at this point unless we revert midseason to the west coast or power I, Kodi should get the snaps to give him a hand up on next year. And no I don’t think its as much the play calling as it is just poor execution and a lack of tempo in the offense.

our boys need us now more than ever....WAR EAGLE 4 LIFE!

it’s a heartbreaker to read those comments made by our boys who go out there every week and lay it on the line, trusting their coaching staff to make the right decisions. instead, not only is our OC a total moron, our beloved Tubbs won’t even step in and and show some emotion and try to salvage the rest of the game. i hate to see our boys lose their heart and confidence. this is a team full of talent, but CTF is a disease that shouldn’t have been allowed in to the Tiger family in the first place. and now that he’s done some damage I hope Tubbs will step in and do what needs to be done. our guys trust him to have their back just like us, the fans. we’re too good to be going through this humiliation that is the reign of CTF…..off with his head. Keep that Tiger spirit alive…dont’ give up on our boys! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR EAGLE!

Holy crap.

Alright. I have made my feelings about Tubberville known, but my dislike for him is as a coach. i would never call him a disease who should have never been let in to our Tiger family. He is a good man who makes the players better men. he runs a clean program which is a lot to be said these days. And lastly, he represents the university very well. no one should ever refer to Tubberville as a disease on our team.

I think you are confused

CTF is Coach Tony Franklin CTT is Coach Tommy Tuberville.

Time for Tubs to do what is best for the team

After Saturday’s game at Vandy it is more clear than ever that:

1. Franklin has lost this talented group of young O Linemen, they checked out in the second quarter and unless Coach Tubs takes quick action we may not ever get them back.
2. Franklin is outmatched by the D Coordinators in the SEC, absolutely no ability to make in game changes, Alabama, and Georgia may be ugly if we can’t get Franklin some help running the game……….he is just not up to the challenge of SEC football.
3. This no huddle mess reminds me of a soft, gutless, Clemson team……….and Clemson is much better at it. This offense makes you soft and weak it killed what could have been a solid Auburn Offense and it is now taking its toll on the defensive side of the ball.
4. If you don’t believe you can pick up a yard on the ground your coaching at the wrong place.
5. Coach Tubs is a standup guy and I respect him for attempting to shelter Franklin, but he has a responsibility to his players to provide the best possible coaching available and clearly Franklin is much suited for AHS than AU.

Its not the spread

The spread is the tool and Franklin is the carpenter. The problem is not the tool it’s the carpenter calling short side option sweeps over and over.

Don’t worry about recruiting if we get rid of Franklin worry about recruiting if we keep him. Who would want any part of playing for this guy? How many of our OLinemen would be here if they knew this guy was was going to be the OC?
