Auburn's Still Got the Blues.
Make that Goldtop cry, Gary Moore!
War Eagle, everyone. I'm crying today, because the last realistic hope for Auburn to reach a third-tier bowl game this season went down the toilet in Vaught Hemmingway Stadium. Auburn falls in Oxford to the Ole Miss Rebels, 17-7. While I was writing this, I had my media player on shuffle mode, and this song came up. Fitting, huh? In this case, we've still got the blues, for Campbell, Williams, Brown, Aromashodu, Rogers, Rosegreen, McClover... A little Acid taste in tunes, on this dreary day, for you. Enjoy.
The Tigers came out flat in this early game, and we displayed more strange offensive strategy. The I formation set that was so successful in the first half of the West Virginia game, was used only on two third quarter plays. One was a 27-yard touchdown gallop for Auburn's only points, the second was the same play, less blocking and no gain. Otherwise, Auburn ran nearly exclusively from the shotgun, with myriad handoffs into the short side of the field. Take away Tate's bolt, and the running backs tallied just 25 yards on 15 carries.
In the second half, the coaches decided to let Burns take some shots. It was the right thing to do, even if we tossed up three interceptions. Burns will never get any better, if we don't do that. Amazingly, we had receivers fighting for deep balls, and making plays. Very few drops, either. Burns joins some elite company, with his first 300 yard passing game as an Auburn Tiger. Auburn 300 yard passers are: Pat Sullivan, Stan White, Patrick Nix, Dameyune Craig, Ben Leard, Daniel Cobb, Jason Campbell, Brandon Cox, and now Kodi Burns. He'll get better, and our running game will too, if we keep taking those shots.
Auburn's defense played soft up front at times, and played way off in coverage, due to injuries. Ole Miss piled up over 200 rushing yards, and their lowest yards-per-carry average among their backs was 5.8, by Brandon Bolden. Jevan Snead made numerous poor throws, which derailed Ole Miss drives. Had the Auburn defense been playing Georgia or Alabama, they might have given up 70 points. It was, unfortunately, that bad.
Special teams got off to a shaky start, with several short punts in the 1st quarter. Ole Miss nearly got to the punter, several times. Durst kicked better as the game went on, but we had no spark on the return games, and failed to do much in coverage, despite some Ole Miss mistakes.
I don't usually grade coaching, but our game management this time was terrible. We closed out the first half with all three time-outs left, 30 seconds left, and the ball at midfield. Had we thrown a few Hail Mary's, at worst it would have been like a punt, and Ole Miss would have been backed up. In a game where you only score single digit points, you need every opportunity you can get. Tuberville and crew flat squandered that. After nine games, coaches, you need to get this: short-side handoffs, out of the shotgun, against eight in the box? Won't work. Won't ever work. Why beat up our running backs with that play? Why? I did like the decision to let Burns throw some deep balls against man coverage. And I liked how the receivers caught 'em. Didn't know they had it in 'em!
Grades
Defensive Line: C. At times we got pressure, and made some run stops, at times we had all four men being stood up and driven back. Ends lost contain at times. I'm not sure that we're playing with the same fire here, as earlier in the season.
Linebackers: F. I really don't know how to explain how poorly these guys played. They don't fill holes. They don't contain to the outside. They don't cover. They don't pass rush. I don't think I've ever seen a more confused, ineffective Auburn linebacker corps, and that includes 1998, after we had lost three starters late. If we did make a tackle here, it was usually hanging on, near the first down stake, way past the line of scrimmage.
Secondary: D+. There was some improvement over last week, especially at safety. We're so banged up, though, that we're just giving away the hitches, outs, and screens. Any team with an accurate quarterback can get 8-10 yards against us whenever they want to, with throws in the flats. We continue to drop sure interceptions. Passing grade is due to keeping Ole Miss from hitting the deep ball, which they've done to practically everyone else.
Punting: C. Our protection was spotty, our coverage missed a couple of tackles, and Durst hit several short punts early. And he dropped a snap! Still, we were good enough to bottle up Marshay Green for only 9 yards. Durst improved as the game went on, but a 40.9 yard average is sub-par in the SEC.
Punt Returns: D. We pass because we didn't turn it over, but we didn't block these at all. We had return men BLANKETED, with the only choice being a fair catch. We let two balls hit and roll, and pin us deep.
Kick Returns: C. Ole Miss covered well. We blocked poorly, and averaged only 17 yards per return. Bonus points on Gabe McKenzie's recovery of the squib. We wasted that opportunity, though.
Place Kicking: A. Only a single extra point attempt here, and Wes Byrum hit it well.
Kickoffs: C+. No touchbacks, but we did kick it fairly deep. Coverage held Mike Wallace to just 15 yards per return, but with one muff, this should have been even lower.
Offensive Line: B-. I know some folks are going to question this grade, when we ran for next to nothing. It's the scheme, though. You can't expect a five-man line to block 8 or 9. Our line held up pretty darned well. We had one bad stretch near the end of the first half, but for the most part, our guys held up well, giving Kodi Burns time. Points off on stupid penalties.
Receivers: A-. When was the last time you saw an Auburn wide receiver catch a deep ball? 2004 SEC Championship Game? We caught a bucket full of 'em, today. Chris Slaughter caught 8 for 131 yards. We haven't had that kind of production in a long while! One drop by Robert Dunn in the first half, and a holding call on Tommy Trott were the main demerits. Otherwise, this was easily the best effort of the year by the receiving corps.
Running Backs: B. Excellent pass protection, but often went down with the first hit. It's hard to give a better grade, when they only picked up 50 yards. Frankly, though, it was the scheme. We averaged 13.5 yards per carry out of the I formation, but didn't use it but twice in the running game.
Quarterback: C+. Three interceptions, all poor throws into coverage mar this grade. Kodi did a good job of giving his receivers a chance, though, for the most part, and avoiding sacks. We're headed in the right direction, here. Definitely. Kodi has to play, and gun it, to get better. He will.
In the end, we lost due to a lack of ability to stop the run. If it weren't for the D-line, we'd never stop anybody. Snead kept us in the game till the end, with bad throws. We got McFadden hurt, and now I think our only healthy corners are Harry Adams and D'Antoine Hood. I can understand playing hurt, and hobbled. The linebacker corps, though, really need to step it up, and play better. We have used small linebackers for most of this decade, and it only works when they are aggressive, and use good tackling technique.
It's time to get back to work, and get ready for homecoming. Hopefully, we can break a four game losing streak, the second longest in the Tuberville administration. War Eagle, everybody. It's great to be an Auburn Tiger! Enjoy the music. At least something good came out of this blog, today!

Good recap
Good recap and blog…it was a dissappointing but somehow not surprising day. I was actually surprised at the passes that Kodi did make…I stil can’t believe we were in the spread again, but hey, maybe by next season they’ll figure out what kind of team we should be.
I still think we should be “old Auburn” for the Tide.
Got to believe...........
Thanks for your objective and thorough analysis week after week.
It’s easy to sit back and take shots at a program that’s struggling. It’s easy to find fault with coaches and players that are not winning. There is no doubt that tough times have fallen on the AU football program. There is no doubt that it will not be an easy road back to the top, but we will get there. As with everything there is always room for improvement. The advantage each fan has is our shortcomings and mistakes are only known to those around us. They are not on display for television audiences and 86,000+ fans at Jordan-Hare to see and critique.
Nobody likes losing, especially the coaches and players. We will get through this as difficult as it is. Every fan needs to stand with this team and let them know that they do believe that this team can and will dominate in the SEC again.
WAR EAGLE
WAR EAGLE!
Texas v. Texas Tech
Was that a great game or what??? Outstanding play by TT…I feel so bad for Will Muschamp, his defense didn’t play in the 1st half…maybe he should come back to the Plains and fire up our team…I miss him jumping all over our sidelines!
Ehh... Muschamp.
……We saw a lot of the same technique that we saw a year ago, out of his DBs. Chasing the receiver, not looking at the QB. The winning score was on one of those. With the banged up mess we’ve got this year in the secondary, you really can’t fault coaching.
…..If nothing else, we saw how a balanced spread SHOULD work. I was in awe of the Tech offense!
War Damn Eagle....
and damn it. There is no doubt that there was some improvement in the execution of the spread…….but it isnt there yet. Kodi is progressing nicely with his reads and all in all played pretty damn well. The interceptions are bad but fixable and he only really threw one bad ball. The offensive line gets a C- in my book because of the penalties. The defensive line and linebackers get a D because of the penalties (most face mask penalties in a drive and single quarter I may have ever seen). Our corners played soft at the line and gave up the short pass repeatedly. They had better get healthy before the dawgs come to town or its gonna be ugly. The good news is the Dawgs looked almost as inept as we did yesterday (UF may be the best team in the nation it certainly looks as though they are the best in the SEC). I will say now that Franklin must have had some personal issues with Kodi Burns because the amount that he has progressed in his playing in 2 full starts is amazing. If he continues to improve he will be hard to handle for opposing defenses. I have a hard time believing at this point that Chris Todd ever won the job with an unbiased eye from Franklin. I actually now believe that Tuberville may have made the right decision in firing Franklin in the middle of the season even without factoring in Franklins meltdown and tirade against certain players and coaches. I would have liked to have seen where Kodi would be right now had he been starter from the start of the season. I can’t help but think that we would be bowl eligable at the very least. Lets just hope Tuberville and staff can keep the offense improving and get the defense healthy in time for UGA and Bammer. And Justinsch3, screw Will Muschamp, his jumping ship for Texas made him unwelcome and Paul Rhodes is in my opinion a better coach.
funny...
Haha BAMA…I can’t believe Texas held on to the #1 spot so far??? Not sure about the BCS, but soooo glad BAMA didn’t move up!!!
and the new polls aren't out yet..
you stupid barner douche. texas isn’t still #1. someone give this guy a clue.
oops
i looked at si.com…apparently they weren’t updated. not a douche fuckhead, just misinformed…anyways…get a clue yourself, are you mad at everything? are you a fucking tool yourself? i wish i could meet a jackass like you and show you 11 years of military experience fucker! suck it faggot
No
doubt they will be very tough games but I don’t think anyone else ranked in the top 3 has a defense as good as ours. “If” we get past LSU and UF I don’t see Bama losing to TT or PSU.
LSU does look possible,
….but that thing’s in Baton Rouge, right? I’m not sure anyone can handle Florida, right now. That’s no knock on Bama, just this rocker’s opinion. Bama DOES deserve to be where they are in the polls, IMHO. You win ’em all in the SEC, you should be at the top.
……After watching last night’s Texas Chainsaw match, wow! I’d absolutely LOVE to watch an Alabama/Texas Tech title game! The best way to slow the Raiders down would definitely be with the 3-4, and a healthy Terrence Cody.
…..From this Auburn nut’s perspective, watching a Bama game outside the Iron Bowl is a no-lose proposition. Intellectually, you enjoy seeing your state beat someone else, especially outside the SEC. If Bama struggles, we can’t help snickering a little. I WILL hope for Bama failure, on November 29, though.
…..You Bama guys ARE laughing at Auburn, aren’t you? I would be. Especially the defense. In defense of the defense, look at all the damage:
Marks hurt (BOTH ankles), probably won’t play on homecoming. Blanc possibly out for the year (broken hand at Ole Miss). Doolittle hurt (groin), probably out for homecoming. Coleman has been hurt since Tennessee (ankle), hasn’t practiced at all since. Goggins possibly out for the year (ankle). Raven Gray never played a snap (knee). Antoine Carter hurt, limited (ankle). That’s the D line, we’re down to tackles 4 and 5, and ends 5 and 6 healthy, one of those ends is a converted tight end.
Blackmon out, Stevens slowed (turf toe we saw it when he tried to contain McCluster on those outside pitches), Johnson (hamstring) couldn’t run. Bynes (deep thigh bruise), can’t run. Linebackers, one out and three of the top four slowed.
Powers out (hamstring), Savage out for the season (knee), McFadden out (knee and ankle) Thorpe out (ankle). That’s corners number 5 and 6, both true freshmen. Safeties McNeil and Etheridge are beat up , but still playing.
…..So, for UT-Martin, we’re looking at essentially a third team D-line, 2nd team linebacker corps, and 3rd team corners. No wonder we can’t hold up…
and another week..
you guys are getting spanked and still hoping for Bama’s failure. Thanks for reinforcing all my comments from last week. You know your team is heading the right direction when your rival (supposed rival…your team is irrelevant to college football right now) gets humiliated and continues to hope for your failure for something worthwhile to hang on to.
And I’m in before you say, “well you’re on an Auburn website!!”. SBNation is a collection of SEC websites. Thanks, keep it classy!
Disappointed, but definitely an improvement offensively
Yes, I know Burns threw 3 interceptions. I know our offensive line got several penalities and didn’t play that well. But overall, the offense really looked a lot better than it has in several weeks. We pulled off several big plays (I think we had at least 7 plays of at least 15 yards, or something similar) and seemed to have a little more cohesiveness in our attack. We were able to move the ball, but just couldn’t finish in the red zone. Now, none of this matters much when our D is so injured, but next year is looking better.
As far as Bens4vcobra and his post, I personally believe Florida will murder Alabama in the SEC Championship. They’re a team that plays four quarters, and they are more talented. Florida is probably playing the best football in the nation right now (even better than Texas Tech, though I was impressed with their performance). As per LSU, Alabama will beat them handily, but that should not be a terribly impressive win after being exposed by Florida and Georgia.
Thank you Houston Nutt...
for not running the ball in the 1st half and trying to take advantage of our injured secondary. That kept things interesting until late when it was just clear we were never going to score again. I give up. I know Ensminger is calling the plays but I just have to say that Tuberville is a complete fool for the gameplan he drew up and stuck with. My god, Ole Miss gave us an entire half to try and get a lead while Jevan Snead was throwing the ball 5 ft over his receivers, and we did absolutely nothing running that F’ing GD spread. I swear I can’t vomit anymore over that monstrosity they call an offensive package. I’m not going to even bother watching the Georgia game because, after what Florida did to them they are going to abolutely destroy us. They went easy on us in Jordan Hare a couple of years ago but with our injuries and our insipid offense they literally might drop 70 or 80 pts. on us. We are literally at Mark Richts mercy right now. I have no faith whatsoever in Tuberville making any changes. He’s gone off the reservation and given up on trying to win, that is obvious. I’m beyond disgusted but I guess we just have to live with it and HOPE it somehow will get better next year. I’m telling you though, the way this season is ending will effect our program in recruiting and perception for years to come because the entire SEC will be saying Tubs is on the way out, whether it is true or not. Tuberville has a truly mountainous task ahead of him to get us back to competitiveness. I think we have the players to come back but the coaching staff leaves a lot to be desired and I include Tuberville in that assessment.
For you Bammers that come on here indulging in our misery, welcome to the party!!! Now you know how much we’ve enjoyed the last 6 years watching how pathetic you have been. Tuberville sure does look as clueless this year as Shula ever did. So enjoy…run your mouth…and go hide when LSU and Florida whip your sorry hides. You aren’t great, you are very good but not good enough. Deep down you know it and now that you are number 1 in the BCS, you have to carry it to the finish line, that is going to be very tough even though you get the satisfaction of destroying us along the way. It will be enjoyable watching you get so close but not closing the deal.
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
The colonel.....
represents a minority of the AU family that actually wants Tuberville gone…….A.K.A. “The Lowderites”. Its like the cousin that you have to invite but hope doesn’t actually show. Col. Angus I will be very surprised if any offensive coaches not named Eddie Gran survive at AU for another year and I trust Tuberville to have us back to competitive SEC caliber football next year with a new sexy offensive coordinator complete with assistants of his choosing.
Some do, some don't.
……I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating again: Keep Tuberville! No, he hasn’t made the best decisions, this year. He recruits. He keeps ‘em out of trouble. He wins (well, except for this year.). Arguably, we’d be at least 7-2 at this point, had the injuries not mounted up so quickly. If my choices are: character, recruiting and representation; vs. genius-level strategy, I’m going to pick the former every time. Frankly, though, Tub is not stupid, and I think he’ll make better hires, this go-round.
…..Meanwhile, all we can do is cheer ‘em out. I’ll point out what I see going wrong, but as a Backyard Football-level coordinator, my opinion on a college football-level staff is hardly worth the paper it’s printed on…
I want someone to explain the gameplans.
Todd, Acid, you guys want to portray me as some redneck malcontent with an unreasonable desire to get rid of Tuberville…aka Lowderite, but I want you guys to explain to me Tuberville’s gameplan to stick with the spread when our only, and I mean ONLY, success on offense this year has been out of the I formation. I mean if he is going to utilize it at all why for god sakes not use it when we have a chance to win!!! Doesn’t that perplex you at all? Do you guys not care that we are losing running plays that haven’t worked all year long? They finally started throwing the ball downfield some but we still aren’t running the ball effectively out of the spread and you still have to be able to run the ball to set up the pass.
If you are going to say “we need to run the spread to get Kodi more comfortable and give him experience for next year”. I personally don’t see how getting more reps in our version of the spread is going to help him get ready for next year unless we start running the full Airraid version of the spread and besides, we are about to have over 10 months to get ready for next year and I would like to at least try to win the Bama game.
I really don’t want Tuberville fired, I really just want him to make sure we are going into each game with our best chance to win. If you guys could tell me how that incorporates our use of the spread, please explain.
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
Chill. Relax. We live in a democracy. It is OK, to have differences of opinion!
…..We don’t think you’re a redneck malcontent! Everyone’s unhappy with the situation. I have NOT liked the offensive gameplans, ALL YEAR! Best I’ve seen all year, was having Kodi let it rip, this week. Yeah, we got 3 interceptions, and maybe a couple more than should have been, but! There’s no point that I can see, to having 4 or 5 wide, if you don’t throw it downfield. FINALLY, this week, it happened in the second half. AND…
…..I wanted more I-formation, too! As I stated above, we ran out of it TWICE. Now, of course, I can see the other side of it. Tristan Davis has done an admirable job as an undersized blocking fullback, but no one can deny that he’s breakable. It’s a flat-out waste of him, if we mess up the rest of his career getting a shoulder or knee ruined. Other than Tommy Trott, we don’t have an SEC-caliber lead blocker healthy. Vance Smith’s not ready. Ryan Hastie is a Senior walk-on for a reason. John Douglas tore up a knee early. As much as I like running out of the I, we DO NOT HAVE THE BLOCKERS. Not right now.
…..From a “what we have available” standpoint, I would call more wide-side screens and runs. I GROAN, when we run everything to the short side. We need to turn Fannin and Davis loose in the open field. On the Texas Tech offense, did you SEE how they blocked those slip-screens? It was BRUTAL! I’d LOVE to see what Robert Dunn could do, with a corner and outside linebacker posted up like that!
…..In short, we don’t really have the personnel to pound it, as much as I think we’d all like to!
I completely agree...
and you can add that Tuberville is determined to install the offense and not have to start from scatch with the next spread OC. As I stated before I would have been pounding the ball after the MSU game but they don’t call and ask me……..I do think the spread is the future and if we get it established and well oiled before the rest of the SEC west then we are in a great position and I think Tuberville knows it……he’s also got to hold together the recruiting class until an OC can be hired.
