It's Time For The South's Oldest Rivalry

Fannin_medium
Auburn will need more production from its running backs to beat Georgia.

Welcome to the start of Amen Corner! This season certainly won't be one we talk about for years to come, but no matter what the records, I still get excited about the South's Oldest Rivalry.

Let's not forget about the situation two years ago when Georgia came calling on Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers were ranked fifth in the country and expected to roll against a young, struggling quarterback named Matt Stafford. The Bulldogs had lost four of their last five games and given little chance against Tommy Tuberville's team.

On that rainy, muggy early Saturday afternoon, Georgia finally put it all together and upset Auburn 37-15. Sound familiar? Never assume anything in this series. The odds are long, but you still have to play the game.

By now I'm sure you've heard that Saturday's game will be televised by Raycom Sports, which means an 11:30 a.m. CT kickoff. That's the price you pay for underachieving.  For the second time in three years, this game draws the short straw.

This is not good if you're Auburn. Why? This weekend's game is perhaps the biggest of the year for recruiting and because of the early start many high school players will not be able to get flights to Atlanta or Montgomery in time to make it for kickoff.

We can all thank the NCAA. A couple of years ago they decided it wasn't in the best interest of the student athlete to ride on school planes. Tuberville was a leading opponent of the proposal, along with Alabama and several other SEC schools. Nonetheless, it passed and now high school players must fly commercial into the closest airport and often drive several hours to reach the school they are visiting.

Auburn was hoping to be picked up for the night game by ESPN 2, but they decided to go with Vanderbilt-Kentucky. If that's not the true sign of a bad season then I don't know what is.

In Monday's Talkin' Tigers we preview the Georgia-Auburn game. If you're already signed up it should be in your inbox. If you don't see it, check your spam box. If you're not a member yet, click here to join. It's free.

Condolences

I just saw on Rivals that you associate AD Virgil Starks had passed away after the Tenn-Martin game. I just wanted to pass on my condolences to the fanbase and members of the Athletic Dept.

His family is in my prayers.

Should the fine staff of Track ‘Em Tigers become aware of where one can send flowers, etc, would you all please post it? At 46, I’m sure Mr. Starks had family obligations that will need to be met and I’d like to help in any way I can.

Tenn martin

Wears the same design / Color as the auburn tigers

I once asked the question why are there so many Alabama fans that never graduated from the university? I was told its because their parents were fans and it was passed down.........(my response after a pause).....similar to racism.....?

because...

the skyhawks uniforms look identical to auburns in almost every aspect. in order to eliminate confusion on both sides, the teams agreed that auburn would wear road white while UTM would wear orange.

Yea...

And it looked just like ours, hence the ‘not wanting to confuse’ part. They needed to wear something so that no Auburn fan would think they were watching an A-Day game…

Besides, our guys like wearing the white uni’s…

Orange

Wow, I’ve always wanted to see what orange jerseys would look like. I must say that I hope we never wear orange again.

I wish...

…we could say that about the crowd…

In a Clemson sort of way...

Sorry. I just can’t help it. I was raised on blue and orange, not the other way around. Yea, I know that orange stands out in the stadium a lot better than blue, and maybe I wouldn’t mind it every so often, but all the time? What are we going to do next? Start calling our stadium Death Valley like 63 other teams do?

I hate that...

Remember when “The Jungle” was started. I thought I was going to up chuck my Mama G’s right there. Thank the good lord that did not hang around. They even made that little sign and put mulley grasses around it in the students endzone.

On the fans wearing orange, I kind of like it. Although I was also taught to wear blue, but the orange is fine with me. Although I do not want to see Auburn ever wear the orange jersey. In my opinion UTM looked awful.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

Burnt orange is beautiful. Red orange is turrible!

Auburn’s orange is burnt orange. see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnt_orange#Burnt_orange

It irks me, to no end, that the ‘powers-that-be’ at Auburn University do not establish and enforce standards to ensure — that everything sanctioned by Auburn University to bear the colors of Auburn University — use ONLY the “Official Colors” of Auburn University.

I can assure you that the ‘powers-that-be’ at the University of Texas Austin know what the hell University of Texas Austin burnt orange is!

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless

FILE -- This is an Oct. 18, 2008 file photo showing Connecticut corner back Jasper Howard (6) trying to get the crowd into the game during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against Rutgers, in Piscataway, N.J.
