1st and 5: Most Significant Auburn-Georgia Games in the Last 20 Years
We thought you had him neutered!!!
Auburn-Georgia week holds such special meaning for a lot of Tiger fans, especially for Georgia natives War Damn Zach and I , and also border-teetering Jay, not to mention about a quarter of our football team. We've certainly had fun with the cultural exchange with the Doggies this week, but on a more serious note, I thought we'd take a look at some of the most significant/dubious matches in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry the last 20 years. And in the interest of detente' and to show I'm not a total homer, I've included games that we didn't even win. Please feel free to suggest your own games and/or add commentary to the ones I've mentioned. I fully expect Acid Reign to come in and add analysis to each game, as I am flying blind tonight with most of my reference material, which I left in my other pants/computer.
My Top 5, in no particular order, be you Barner or Fleabag...
1) 1996 The Overtime Game, 56-49 Georgia. THE reason why the NCAA adapted the 'must go for two' rule starting in the 3rd overtime. I believe this is also the game that Uga tried to take a bite out of Robert Baker--on OUR turf, no less. Uga must have thought that Baker kept his stash in his hip pads...
2) 1994 The Non-Pat Dye Tie, 23-23 all. Ruined our 20-game winning streak. Not a particularly strong Goff team--only won 6 games, but yet another example of the lesser team in this series exceeding expectations. Whatever happened to that guy? Gators LOVED him...
3) 2004 Clash of the Titans, 24-6 Auburn. Both teams highly ranked, Georgia poised to beat us for the 3rd year in a row, Auburn looking to stay undefeated and jump into the BCS top 2. This loss kept the Dogs from getting a rematch in Atlanta...
4) 2005 The Nail-Biter, 31-30 Auburn. Again, two good teams square off, both star-crossed to ever make it to Atlanta that year. Shockley makes a quick knee rehab to put forth valiant effort against a scrappy Tiger team. Brandon Cox completes 4th-and-forever to set up the game winner. A game where if you had to lose it, you don't mind going down like that...
5) 2002 Thank You, Jesus and Mark Richt!, 24-21 Georgia. Another clash of good teams and another very-close game, won by the slimmest of margins in the crappiest of weather. David Greene's throw to hit Michael Johnson in the end zone made for the only immortal Larry Munson call over the years that made me cringe. Gave the Pups their first SEC crown in 20 years. Somewhere in Dallas, Herschel smiled again...
So there you have it--our contemporary history as I remember it. Again, please feel free to give me your list or add on to my commentary.

I especially enjoyed the 2004 game for obvious reasons
Mentioned already. It’s was a blast to watch Georgia go down in flames after what they did to us. That was the year they beat us 45-16 in Athens AND the year of our 10-9 loss to you guys.
BTW,
First post here checking out the site. Take it easy on me guys : )

Most significant...
…..was EASILY the 2004 game. We were fighting for BCS position, and all you saw out of the media/Trojan/Sooner crowd was, “Who have you played?” When we put the smackdown on Georgia, the world took notice.
……That game really could have gone either way. UGA drove it down with ease on us, early, then Carlos Rogers made a HUGE stop, and we blocked the FG. Auburn got a punt blocked, and then Carlos Rogers picked it off in the end zone. If we don’t stop those two drives, we don’t lead 17-0 at the half. In the second half, UGA was driving again, when that BIG Junior Rosegreen helmet-to-helmet hit happened. That took the air out of UGA, again. Still, it took a big punt return by Carnell Williams, and a fade to Ronnie Brown to put it away.
……My “most dubious” vote would go to the 1991 game in Athens. We absolutely could not stop freshman Eric Zeier, losing 37-27, to end our bowl hopes that season.
That's right...
Zeier was one year behind Stan White. Both started all four years. I imagine Zeier still holds a few passing records over in Athens!

I was at the 1996 4 O.T. Game
I was sitting in the West Side Upperdeck about 6 rows from the top and man was it cold and windy. I was so miserable after the 2nd O.T. that I honestly didn’t care who won that game. I was just ready to get it over with and go get a hot meal so that I could warm up. I also remember Jimmy Brumbaugh playing a a rediculously large number of snaps and both teams were pretty much spent at the end of the game. Talk about leaving it all on the field…
I was a student....
If you recall a bunch of students left the game, because of the weather. It was truly nasty. At the begining of the OT, they were letting the students back in. It was the first time I remember them letting folks back in to see the game.
If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

I remember watching that 2005 game with an LSU buddy of mine going, "Crap, Brandon Cox is going to be really really good"
Boy were we wrong.
Me, too.
I also recall thinking that about Jamie Howard through the first 3 quarters of a game in 1994…

Did you notice...
…that I started naming all those games, like they were Auburn-LSU games? Half of the Tiger-Tiger games get names, but few of the AU-UGA games do.
Maybe I’ll just start making this stuff up as I go along. Wait. I already DO!!!

One could argue...
…..that the 1994 UGA game broke the Terry Bowden spell. It was an ESPN Prime Time game, and we were beat up. UGA led 6-0 after two long first quarter drives. Then, Stephen Davis went crazy on them. We led 23-9 midway through the third quarter, and were threatening. Nix tried to hit Sanders on a corner route, and it was underthrown. Sanders went over top of the UGA corner, swatted the sure interception away, right to the UGA safety who was lying flat on his back. Picked off anyway. Zeier would IMMEDIATELY hit a 79 yard bomb to Brice Hunter, and UGA was back in it. Stephen Davis pooped out. Georgia would tie it in the 4th quarter. Bowden took the rest of the quarter to do it, but got us down on blood and guts to the UGA 25 or so. Ran the clock down, and set up Matt Hawkins for the boot. 41 yards, no good. It deflated the heck out of the team, and ended a 20-game win streak.
