Muschamp Offered On-the-Job Training at Texas

Ncf_muschamp_brown_300_medium

An announcement out of Austin this afternoon  that Texas DC Will Muschamp has been offered a multi-year contract extension that will nail him down as DC for the forseeable future and will lead to him eventually supplanting Mack Brown as the Longhorns' head coach. Details of the contract are still being ironed out, but so far include a bump in Muschamp's salary to $900,000 beginning in January.

It's still unclear as to how long this grooming process will last as Brown has 8 more years left on his contract and is "not thinking at all about moving on." Obviously, Texas is looking to secure the hot coaching prospects' services before waves of other schools come calling in a year where there is a dearth of existing rising stars. His name is probably the most mentioned prospect around the country that has never held a HC position and Texas rightfully wanted to see that he stayed put.

Muschamp served as DC for LSU under Nick Saban, then promply left with him when Saban jumped to the NFL Dolphins. After that 2-year stint, he returned to college football and served as DC with Auburn for two years before two-stepping west to Texas this past winter after rumored dubious contract negotiations involving Tommy Tuberville. Known for his 'enthusiastic' demeanor, Muschamp has had mixed success in his first year with the Horns teaching his brand of defense.

This announcement today follows a nascent trend in CFB of naming successors way in advance. The best known example was the naming of OC Jimbo Fisher late last year to be the coach-in-waiting at Florida State, a move seemingly designed to keep a quality coordinator in place rather than have him poached by other teams in need of a new HC. Other examples have occured at Kentucky with Joker Phillips and at Purdue with Danny Hope.

It all came down to two things: Texas knew that other suitors would come calling and they knew Will's proclivity for leaving...

BOOM! Knock that _-_er off the list!

…..I would NOT want to see our DBs chasing wide receivers again, giving up 40 yard bombs.

I think...

…he’ll come running home to SEC mamma before Mack Daddy retires/expires…

i can't vote for any of those.

I would have voted for a, “I wanted Muschamp last year, but alas, he is gone.”

I wish Auburn had wrapped up Muschamp for the long haul last year but we couldn’t do that and Texas did. I am honestly shocked that he hasn’t assembled a better defensive unit at Texas than they have now. I say this because looking at their past few classes, they recruit top tier defensive talent that should really give him some serious speed to play with.

If he is happy at Texas and wants to stay for the long haul, good for him though. Not sure why Auburn fans hold it against him to go to Texas, especially with the instability that we have had the past 8 years.

I was...

…going to have a 5th choice: D) Thank God, Greyhound, and Jimmy Sexton he’s gone…

Personally, I don’t have anything against WM, especially considering we don’t have the whole story of his leaving, but we have to include all possibilities and prejudices…

He got screwed big time

at Auburn. with the whole Jay Jacobs/contract situation. I always loved Muschamp I mean how could you not. There were definitely flaws in his D, they definitely had a tendancy to give up that big play from time to time, but hell it was just fun to watch that D play. I say good for him that he is getting some kind of reward, but to hell with Texas! They are the worst about cherrypicking from our coaching staff.

Um...

UT’s defense is hugely improved from last year.

And anyone who says “the big 12 doesn’t play defense, look at those scores” is a moron.

Just look at the scores Florida put up this year once they hit their stride. Just think if the SEC had 5 teams with Florida-like offenses. TT, UT, OU, OK St, Missou. Our defenses wouldn’t look so hot anymore.

I’m not saying that the SEC defenses aren’t better, because clearly they are, however, you have to give a lot of credit where it is due, namely the big 12 offenses.

A little Surprised...

I can’t believe Mack Brown would agree to this. I didn’t realize he was close to being finished at Texas. I guess Tennessee and Clemson were pushing hard for Muschamp.

8 whole years left on the contract!!!

That not what we call the not too distant future. Mack Daddy’s pretty emphatic about that, too. I got another news flash for you. WM ain’t waiting 8 years to get the reigns of a program. This is clearly a stop-gap measure to keep WM in place for 2-4 years so they can get a decent ROI…

They

just wanted to lock him down any way they could.

It was Mack's idea actually...

He know’s his team’s success this year is largely due to the energy of Muschamp.

Swearing on youtube now gets you a job?

Auburn didn’t give up 35 plus to UGA for the first time in two years and Texas currently sits at 110th in the nation in pass defense.

Mack Brown is 57. 900k is what Texas wants to pay Muschamp. Clemson/UT didn’t have an extra million set aside to buy some random assistant coaches contract that he probably hasn’t signed?

I still don’t see why anyone would want Muschamp to coach their team.

I sure don't want him

Unless Mack Brown retires in the next two years, Muschamp is a goner. He is not going to wait it out. And if Will is like most coaches, a title (Coach in waiting) means little when an actual HC offer hits the table. 900K/ year to wait around or Millions to be a HC now. Hmmmm… what to choose?

I just hope that Auburn stays as far away from this guy as possible. He was not all that good in my opinion, I think he is a good scheme coach but or fundamentals were just bad. He is firey, which is fine as a DC but a HC must be cool, calm, and collected most of the time.

Tuberville is a much better option.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

Muschamp is not ready

,,,,to coach at a top program. He may think he is but he isn’t.
