Ten Days to Go

I do not like having the bye week before the Bama Game.  I hate that the SEC made Auburn and Alabama play on Thanksgiving weekend.  Why should they care when the teams bye weeks are?  Oh well, I guess that gives us time to talk about the big game for two weeks instead of the usual one.

Personally, I think that Auburn will play quite well.  The Georgia game showed some progress in the offensive unit.  Granted the Dawgs defense is not the greatest, and Alabama will have a week to prepare, but steps were made this past week.

Kodi looked comfortable, and had no interceptions.  His fumble was quite awkward, and I think was just a lack of concentration.  Gabe McKenzie made his return to the TE spot, and what a job he did.  Trott was quickly becoming Kodi’s favorite target, but he will most likely be out against the Tide.  Gabe might be the answer to that.  Also, Fannin must have been hurt more than any one realized.  I have a hard time believing that Tuberville would not have had him on the field as a RB earlier, if he was healthy enough to play.  He was as good as advertised against UGA.  It is the first time that I remember him being our featured guy, whether it be passing or running.  Our receivers are still having issues getting open, but when they do Kodi is getting the ball to them a little better.  He is still not hitting them in stride, but he is getting closer.  What could have been had he started and played all season.

Our defense was back to their original form.  We tackled much better, and Thorpe and Powers played well against two top notch receivers.  I miss Blackmon for his playmaking ability, but Josh Bynes is pretty solid.  He seems to get us as fans pumped up as well.

Auburn will need to improve yet again during these two weeks of practice time.  Bama is good, no matter how you look at it.  There kick/punt return game is good, offense is good, and defense is very good.  I still am not sold on John Parker Wilson… for some reason I still can see him making the BIG mistake.   Julio Jones is as good as AJ Green and our DBs will have to step up.

Auburn will have to play its best game to keep the streak alive.  Speaking of the streak… how about Saban getting a little peeved at all the questions regarding the streak?

"I've been asked that twice now, and if somebody in this room can prove to me that what happened over the last six years is going to have any effect on what happens in this game, then we'll talk about it. Otherwise, I think it's pointless. How's that sound? It really doesn't matter.”

Why would he say the past games do not matter?  If the media and fans are talking about it then it matters.  How do you think that coaching rumors turn into coaching changes?  When the media gets a hold of a story it becomes bigger.  Auburn going for 7 wins straight against the Tide is a big deal, even more so since Bama is 11-0 and looking for a National Title.  This is more than likely the biggest game for Bama over the last 20 years.  The pressure that is on Saban and Alabama’s players is huge.  No one really wants to admit it but it is there.  Auburn has made the huge upset before and Tuberville is a great leader.  If the Tide finds a way to lose this game, the streak continues and Bama’s hopes for a national title end a week early.  Also, what will that say about the Auburn Tigers and the continuing winning streak?  I bet everyone in the country would say that it did truly matter.

On paper this game should not even be close.  Alabama owns Auburn in almost every category.  I will give Auburn one category though, and it does not show up on the stat sheet.  We have what commentators like to call the intangibles.  We have a coach who needs a win badly, a team with a QB with nothing to lose.  I think it will be close.  Maybe just maybe we can steal one away from the confident Tide.

Not really...

If Auburn finds a way to beat Bama, then the SEC Championship is just for the Sugar Bowl. Not for the National Title. Therefore in my opinion this is the biggest game. If Bama beats Auburn then Bama will have its biggest game against UF. Just my thoughts.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

that makes it...

the biggest game for Auburn, not Bama. And who says that if we lose in the Iron Bowl and win the SEC we can’t play for MNC? It’s a far cry, I know, but who knows what could happen.

I’m just ready for 1.5 weeks to roll by.

Every game is big

for a couple of weeks every game bama has played has been their biggest. When you are undefeated and trying to make it to the nat’l championship, the game you play that week is your biggest game. This week it’s us. Then it will be the SEC championship game and then if bama gets there it will be the game for the nat’l championship.

I agree...

I think if Bama loses to AU then beats Florida they still go to the NC game. Think about it, two big 12 teams won’t go. USC might not win their conference, and no big 10 team will go over the SEC champ with the same record.

by LSU Jonno on Nov 19, 2008 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

With no conference championship game to play....

and being the darling of the national media, USC is the only team this season that doesnt have to win its conference to go to the BCS Championship game. However, I agree that a 1 loss SEC champion will go. But I believe that team will be the gators.

Bye week

The SEC didn’t say this game had to be that week, just a game. We could have had any other game. UAT didn’t want any part of that. They wanted the Auburn game to be the last game of their season.

by jimithing78 on Nov 19, 2008 8:57 AM CST reply actions

Wrong

The SEC didn’t want anyone having a bye week before the SECCG, to make things fair. Which is the way it should be IMO. Don’t blame it on “UAT”.

He's saying that Auburn and Alabama both could have played another game the weekend of Thanksgiving

If UAT was the one that wanted to keep Auburn last, then I applaud them for it. I hate that it’s Thanksgiving weekend, but Alabama and Auburn should play last, period.

I think

keeping the Iron bowl as the last game is the best decision no matter who is responsible for making it. It has always been last. Considering the Thanksgiving holiday and everything, the fairest thing to do for the players, students and fans is to keep this game here. I was at Auburn when they changed it and I can tell you that it was a huge pain in the ass to go home for Thanksgiving and have to turn around and come right back, but imagine if we had LSU or Arkansas away that week. That would really suck.

by GumptownTiger on Nov 19, 2008 1:35 PM CST up reply actions

Uh yeah...

And freaking LSU and Arkansas play their game on the FRIDAY after Thanksgiving! Not cool.

by LSU Jonno on Nov 19, 2008 4:00 PM CST up reply actions

They used to play Thanksgiving weekend...

…back in the good old days. Can’t remember when they changed it. 15 years ago?

by War Eagle Atlanta on Nov 19, 2008 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Something like that...

I was sad when they changed it as it added another reason to eat and drink to excess over the thanksgiving weekend. I would rather be playing Bama this weekend because I would rather play an unrested Bama squad but I do like football after stuffing myself silly with turkey and all the other great food.

by Todd92 on Nov 20, 2008 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

Long two weeks

It sucks to lose Trott for the Iron Bowl. He’s AU’s third most productive receiver. He started out a little shaky, but has really looked good the last couple of games.

I can’t imagine what the deal with Fanin is, it can prob just be filed under all the mystery things I’ve seen this year (i.e. running Lester inside and Tate outside, running the same play 3 times in a row, going for the end zone when you only need 2 yds for the 1st, etc.)

I’m not one to ever agree with coach satan, but I think he makes the right move not talking about the streak. If it were reversed and we had lost the last six, would you want Tubs talking about it. Saban has only lost one against AU and this is nothing like the team he had last year. He is good at keeping his team focused on the job at hand and is prob treating this as just the next game.

With that said, I hope we beat the piss out of em. WAR EAGLE!

I liked Auburn's matchup with UGA...

a WHOLE lot more than I like it against Bama.

Bama’s power running game isn’t quite as good as LSU’s is, but it is on the same level. So given that, I expect them to have similar success on the ground to what LSU had against Auburn. And since JPW has turned into the best QB in the west this year (which is like saying he’s the smartest kid on the short bus), he will be able to exploit the Auburn secondary if Auburn moves safeties up to stop the run.

However, I think Bama’s defense is beatable. If Auburn can get Fannin and Tate going I think they will be able to keep the game close and that’s all that matters. If Auburn can keep it close going into the 4th quarter, there is no telling what effect that will have on the fans, and players as they start to think about what 7 fingers would look like.

I definitely don’t buy the blow out scenario in this game. Bama is not a scary team. In fact, I think they are the biggest joke of a #1 team in the history of college football. They are absolutely a product of a down year in the SEC. Case in point, freaking Vandy is going bowling. Florida will expose them, if Auburn doesn’t do it first.

by LSU Jonno on Nov 19, 2008 10:56 AM CST reply actions

Get over it.

You’re still butthurt over the fact that LSU couldn’t pull it out against Bama. How is any team going to “expose us” when we have been steady and efficient all year? Everyone knows Bama has a respectable defense and a mediocre offense. What is there to be exposed? Besides the fact that you are the village idiot?

Bama isn’t the most impressive team in the nation and we all know that. But Bama is undefeated, something you can’t say about LSU or AU in a “down year.”

Now get back to harassing women and screaming “Tiger Bait!”

by brandonh on Nov 19, 2008 11:38 AM CST up reply actions

Expose...

May not be the correct term, because as you say everyone knows who Bama is. But I definitely didn’t say anything out of line in my comments. Bama doesn’t scare anybody. Florida does. End of story.

Dude...

Calm down… Bama is the best in the SEC West, no one is disputing that. You won the west. We as Auburn fans and Jonno as an LSU fan do not have to like it though.

I think jonno is just trying to point out that Bama is not a dominate team. They are winning, and my dominate Auburn, but they are not unbeatable.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

by WarDamnZach on Nov 19, 2008 11:44 AM CST reply actions

I can buy that

we haven’t looked impressive, and if we win our last three games, it will be because we grind it out, not because we are blowing people out of the water. In any case, from here on out, a win is a win. If we win the next two games by a combined three points, we still play for the NC. This isn’t a dominate team, for sure, and I am cool with that because of the youth we have.

I hope our team isn’t taking this game lightly, as any game in the Iron Bowl should never be taken lightly, regardless of the records. Tubbs is a good coach, like him or not, and he will have Auburn ready to play, as this could very well be their last game of the year.

The problem with anyone who plays Bama...

…..is that they collapse your O-line with three players. Even when Cody was hurt. Of every prognostication I had about this season, I was most wrong about Alabama’s ability there. Your QB and running backs get hit in the backfield. You can’t do a three-step drop, because the center will get pushed back into the QB. So, you starting doubling up, and Bama’s capable linebackers then get free runs, unblocked, at your backs. Once Bama has convinced you that you’re NOT going to run on ‘em, then you face a suffocating 3-deep zone, with a 4th rusher coming from anywhere on the field on the zone blitz. About all Auburn’s going to be able to do, strategy-wise, to counter that, is lots of roll-outs. And hope Kodi doesn’t get hurt…

…..On offense, Bama runs the ball, behind a very solid O-line, takes shots on the flanks where they can, and eats clock. They KNOW that the D can handle it, and don’t give the ball away.

…..We were out Saturday night, and Bama was on TV at the strange Ginsu restaurant that was picked out. They really just beat Mississippi State up. It was pretty impressive, and it wasn’t really a “must-win” game for the Tide, either.

by Acid Reign on Nov 19, 2008 6:12 PM CST reply actions

excellent analysis...

I think if you guys were completely healthy then Bama fans would be a lot more worried than they currently are. I think Kodi will do well scrambling on us and that is what the coaches are probably going to set him up to do. But I also think that’s when the turnovers might come into play…while he is forcing a pass on the chase.
