How I Would Fix The Football Situation At Auburn
This season has been a disappointment, to say the least. We started in the top ten, and it will take a win over Georgia or Alabama to become eligible for a bowl berth (assuming we beat UT-Martin). We got rid of Al Borges because the offense wasn't performing at the level we needed it to in order to be a top-tier SEC team. Tony Franklin came in, and all our numbers were lower than they were under Borges, so we fired him. Before yesterday's game, the offense was even worse than it was under Franklin. The defense has seen its share of injuries, for certain, but was its early-season success a matter of being really good or playing really terrible offenses? It's obvious that what we have right now don't work. If I were in charge of making the decisions about Auburn football, here is what my plan would be, for what it's worth.
For this description, I'm going to assume that we beat UTM and lose to Georgia and Alabama to close the season and finish at 5-7 (2-6). On the Monday after the Iron Bowl, I call Tuberville and all of the people in charge to discuss the football situation.
The first thing I would tell him is that he has done an admirable job as head coach at Auburn. His record at Auburn is 85-39, including 52-30 in conference. He has won an SEC title and won or shared five SEC division titles, two of which ended with a berth in the SEC championship game. He has gone 5-5 against LSU and Georgia, and 7-3 against Alabama. Against all other SEC teams he has a winning record. He has taken us to eight bowls in ten years. He has won five of those bowl games. He has kept the program out of trouble, has done a good job graduating players, and has represented Auburn University with class and dignity. By all accounts, he is a good football coach.
However, the program has slid in the last five years. The SEC record since 2004 is 8-0, 7-1, 6-2, 5-3, 2-6. We are winning fewer and fewer SEC games each year. Our offense has been regressing every year since 2004 as well. We are having a hard time recruiting talented offensive skill position players. Other SEC schools are passing us by in terms of recruiting ability and prestige. We haven't seen the SEC championship game since 2004. We have still had a good overall record since 2004, but we are trending in the wrong direction.
I would tell Tuberville that he has one year to make positive improvements. He doesn't need to go undefeated or win the conference title in 2009 to keep his job, but he needs the team to play better and have better results. Something like at least a 5-3 or 6-2 conference record, an 8-4 or 9-3 overall record and a New Year's Day bowl game are goals. If he fails to meet these goals in 2009, then it's time for him to hit the road. If he meets or surpasses these goals, we see what he does in 2010. If the program continues to improve, we look at an extension. If we have another stinker year like we did this year, then we let him go.
As far as the offense goes, let Tuberville make his own decision about whom he hires as the next offensive coordinator, but we are involved in the process. The new coordinator either is allowed to bring in his own position coaches, or understands up front that he will have to work with the ones we have. Let offensive coordinator candidates meet with the position coaches to determine if the relationship is going to work. Let Tuberville know that his loyalty to the offensive position coaches is in question. But ultimately, let him make the final decision about the next offensive coordinator.
Auburn's football program is definitely in better shape right now than when we hired Tommy Tuberville. We have loads of talent on the defensive side of the ball, and we have some decent offensive talent. However, if we continue to deteriorate as a program, we could just as soon be in the same position as we were in 1998. And with the high level of coaching in the conference and the amount of talent at other SEC programs, it would be a much harder task to rise back to the top from that level than it was back then.

Let Tuberville make his own decisions...
If Tuberville is our coach after the season, regardless of how the season ends, you have to let him pick who he wants to let go and bring in. Its his future on the line after all and he has earned the right to make those decisions. Regardless of what happens next year, its on Tuberville how the team performs so he’s got to go to war with the guys HE wants not anybody else. He will be responsible for the results win or lose and if he fails there won’t be any excuses necessary. If we have to break our ties with Tubs and cut him lose we can do so knowing we gave him a fair shot.
I think getting bowl eligible might be as much as we can hope for next year with our schedule so don’t get tied to having to do much better than 7-5. As long as we bring in a decent recruiting class, aren’t a laughinstock on offense and we go to a bowl will be enough for me.

Are you guys kidding?

This sounds like the expectations for Mike Shula’s second year, not for a coach with an undefeated season and a SEC championship who would be in his eleventh season at the same program!
Look, as an Alabama alum, I want the opportunity to beat Tommy 7 times in a row (or at least 4 more, to even the record), but settling for the Music City Bowl? Really?

Low expectations?
“End” you sure have a lousy memory for a Bammer fan, I could have sworn you guys were barely getting by the last few years. I am not some Polyanna “Save Tubby” fan. I am a realist who has seen some very disturbing things this year I never thought I would see under a Tuberville administration. Yes I have low expectations for next year. We have not made one step of forward progress with our offense this year. If we stick with the spread it will still be brand spanking new to our returning players since we really haven’t explored it in depth in game situations as it is. To make things more difficult, we will have ANOTHER new OC on the plains trying to put something together that GOD WILLING will look nothing like the abomination that is showcased for two and half minutes between defensive appearances for the Tigers. Our defense is in need of an upgrade as well, we are going to lose Marks and Powers, our linebacking corp already is below average and our depth is very concerning.
We will be playing LSU, UGA, ARK and UT on the road, WVU and Bama at home. Throw in resurgent Ole Miss and always tough MSU and Vandy, and yes 7-5 is about as pragmatic as I can get. There is no doubt Tubs has rebounded before and hopefully he will again but he isn’t going to do it playing the type of football that made him a winner, that is what really concerns me for the future of the program. I want to see good things on the horizon but the clouds just keep getting darker and they may be pitch black on Nov. 30th, the day after the Bama game. I am fully aware of how much the media is rooting for Saban to succeed at Alabama and taking a beating from them on their way to Atlanta is REALLY going to hurt us perceptually in the recruiting game and we can’t afford to fall behind Bama in that regard because we have some major holes to fill.

Angus?
I was wondering if you could help me out. I bought a drag car about ten years ago, been running the same setup the whole time, won a few races that I shouldn’t have won, they were real close..but now she seems to be smoking a little bit, all my friends with smaller engines been laughing and passing me by, I was told to rebuild the motor but decided on some mags instead. Should I just scrap the car or totally rebuild?

I quit reading
when I saw that Power had us losing to Georgia and Alabama. Seriously?! This has been a bad season, but you never give up before a game unless you want to just lose. So, with every new game there is hope. There is. So pull your shit together and cheer like a fan damn it! War Eagle!

You have to make assumptions for this kind of excercise
We will likely be double-digit underdogs in our next two games. Odds are, we’ll lose. Does that mean I want to lose to UGA and Bama? Absolutely not. I’m just stepping out of the fanhood and looking at things rationally.

You can win...
on guts and guile for only a while, if your engine isn’t running in top form you will eventually just become an also ran.
I tell you Big E, Tubs has got big problems. The mere fact that it took us turning the “UT’es” away on a fourth down inside the 10(?) in the fourth qtr before we finally put them away says volumes about our team. We don’t have enough depth on our team to compete with a 1A team….oh sorry a top 20 1A team. They gave us all we could handle and then some. They went up and down the field on us with impunity and our offense other than Kodi Burns draws and sweeps was about as explosive as a pop-gun. I don’t know about you but this has gotten REAL bad, REAL quick. I don’t think Tubs should be fired at the end of the season but it still might be the right thing to do. Ever since the UGA game in ‘06 when Tuberville would not sit an obviously injured and ineffective Brandon Cox, which resulted in Cox having one of the worst games I’ve ever seen a QB have and us being humiliated at home 45-15(and it could have been worse), I have seen an increasingly reluctance of Tuberville to make changes in game that would help us win and even worse make adjustments at half time to correct problems in the offense. This is unusual because he is exceedingly quick to bench a RB or WR should he fumble or miss an assignment.
I don’t know, maybe it’s gonna work out, maybe Georgia or Bama will choke against us and we can somehow eek out a victory against one or both, but I’ve never felt more certain that humiliation waits for us in these last two games because this team is beaten physically and mentally and I don’t see Tuberville doing a damn thing about it. Other than playing Kodi Burns and giving him the much needed game experience to grow, I can’t cite one thing he has done to pull this team out of its nosedive. These are young kids and they need to be motivated and believed in by their leaders and it sounds like a lot of them have given up on Tuberville. As the quote from Remember the Titans goes..“Attitude reflects leadership, Cap’n!”. I think we have a leadership problem and how that gets better by changing the drapes and rearranging the furniture I don’t know.

LSU took Bama to the wire....
UK did the same for UGA. AU still has a shot at winning both games. Tuberville will get it turned in the right direction. War Eagle.

I still dont know
We all talk like its coaching thats the problem im convinced its all the injuries i heard that 42 out of our 90? scholarship players have been hurt this year if this is true i think this is just a “perfect storm year”
I once asked the question why are there so many Alabama fans that never graduated from the university? I was told its because their parents were fans and it was passed down.........(my response after a pause).....similar to racism.....?

Its true the injuries have ......
been incredulous for our tigers this season but part of the reason for the injuries is the amount of time the defense has been on the field and in bad situations. It all started with the change in offensive coordinators and philosophies. I don’t want to argue the cause of the problems…..the problems are what they are and they can be fixed and Tuberville can fix them. I am not saying that we will beat either UGA or BAMA. I am saying we can…… but that is not what I mean by righting the ship. What I mean is that AU can rebound next season and compete in the SEC the way we should. Tuberville has earned the chance to do it. No ifs ands or buts.
