NEWS BULLETIN! Gene Chizik To Be Named Auburn's Next Coach

Chizik_medium
Just when you thought you'd seen it all...

Various media sources around the state are now reporting that Iowa State Coach Gene Chizik will be Auburn's next head football coach. The former Auburn defensive coordinator has spent the past two seasons as coach at Iowa State where he's compiled a record of 5-19, including 10 straight losses to end this season.

To say this move is shocking is an understatement. For many Auburn fans, this is a worst case scenario. There appears to be little logic in the choice. A press confererence introducing Chizik as the new coach could come tomorrow.

Below are the links from two Auburn sources. We'll keep you updated as things happen.

Fire Jay Jacobs NOW.....

this IS the worst case scenario…..we are doomed.

I just don't know about this one...

…..Yeah, Chizik knows his way around town, and can coach some hella-defense, but… Turner Gill was out there, man!?!

…..“Focus, and finish.” Let’s all hope he can recruit.

So how does a coach......

thats in the middle of a 10 game losing streak convince a kid he should come to play football for him?

more importantly

How does a coach in the middle of a 10 game losing streak at a mediocre Big 12 program convince an AD at a major football school in the SEC to come coach for them?!?!?!?!

But does your AD know he went 0-8 in the Big XII this year? Two year HC record of 5-19? What. The. Hell?

Our thoughts exactly

Our AD is the dumbest person to walk the face of this Earth and he just proved it by hiring Chizik.

by kerr024 on Dec 13, 2008 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

I heard 6 years, 18 mil

3 mil per year and 6 years sounds pretty high, though. I think its all speculation at this point. My condolences to your program’s inability to make a rational coaching decision. But, at least now you won’t be poaching our coordinators.

by dawgdayafternoon on Dec 13, 2008 11:54 PM CST up reply actions

I reiterate....

Until Jay Jacobs is FIRED I am no longer sending money to the University.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Dec 13, 2008 3:06 PM CST reply actions

Can someone explain this?

Was he trying to do Iowa St a favor? This is just flat out bizarre. How can Jacobs even be allowed back to the office? Recruiting will crumble. I just don’t understand how the administration can allow this. The university could lose millions in TV, alumni donations, ticket sales, the list goes on. On paper at least, this is a disaster.

by bchappelle on Dec 13, 2008 3:08 PM CST reply actions

Horrible.

Well, the SEC has many good or great coaches. From the perspective of the rest of the conference — phew, one of the good ones was removed and in his place is a shill. Now Auburn will be an easy W for a few years.

From your perspective, though, I’m sure, it’s awful. And let’s get real, this whole thing is a travesty. The administration got into a pissing match with Tommy T. and he called their bluff. And now all of Auburn will suffer for this administration’s fumbling, bumbling and stumbling.

I offer my sincere condolences on this string of events. Jay Jacobs has just guaranteed Auburn’s relative irrelevance for at least five years.

Talk you in a half-decade…

Marshall

Well, Philip Marshall is right about one thing: It’s done. He’s our guy, and there’s really not much to be gained from not getting behind him. Whether you like the choice or not, true orange and blue’s will be there on opening kickoff to the end of the 4th quarter at the Iron Bowl (maybe a bowl game?). We don’t have to get behind Jacobs, but let’s hope we can all say our peace and get on with supporting Auburn football and those boys every week.

by bchappelle on Dec 13, 2008 3:20 PM CST reply actions

Amen.

…..If this news is real, then Chizik gets his shot, with me. I didn’t agree with it. I can argue ten ways from Sunday why it’s a hugely bad decision. But, it’s now moot.

……They’re having a poll on “Alabama Values” on the Birmingham News Editorial blog, this week. “Willful and arrogant ignorance” is the current leader. I think Jay Jacobs is the epitome of this “value.” Time will tell, I suppose.

http://blog.al.com/jkennedy/2008/12/threeway_runoff_for_the_top_al.html

……War Eagle, coach Chizik. One final though: In 1990, Alabama hired a coach with 4 decades of coaching experience, and only one winning season in dozens as a head coach. That coach won ’em a national title in 1992. He also got ’em on probation three years later. Gene Stallings…

by Acid Reign on Dec 13, 2008 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

Im on board

with whoever is our coach, wether I like the choice or not. Chizik was one of the hottest coaches in football before he left Texas and let’s face there is not much to work with in Ames. We allowed a nation low of 11.4 points per game under Chizik in 2004. He won a national title the next year as the Texas D cord. This coaching search has been a fiasco, to not get Gill was a huge mistake. With that said War Eagle. If Gene wins 10 games next year yall will love him.

Hey, I'm a fan

but I’m not delusional. There will be no bowl game next year. Let’s all stay firmly grounded in reality. He is a proven loser as a head coach.

As a fan of a Big 12 North school...

I have to say…huh?

I have followed Auburn somewhat since KSU played you last year, and I thought you’d be after a bigger name for sure. I have a healthy respect for the Tigers, and I root for them whenever I see them on TV.

I don’t want to kick you guys while you’re down, but Gene Chizik wasn’t scaring anyone with the program he was building up in Ames. Maybe he’ll be better at Auburn, but this is really shocking.

On the bright side, you probably won’t have to pay him much…

Just a few things you Done-Nothing people need to understand:
1. Iowa State loss 4 games by 4 or less points.
2. Iowa State put some major points up against competition that was far more superior.
3. With the talent Auburn already has, Chizik will put a dominating D of the field. If we add a impressive Offensive Coordinator to the mix, we have gold.
4. What have you done?

THis has to be a ploy to lure another coach in a couple seasons. Any word on wht they are paying him and how many years on the contract? I wouldn’t put it past those weasels to try and use this as a total political move. Poor guy. Best case scenario, we clean house in the AD and after the dust settles, clear AU’s name and start back over with new blood all around.

Maybe Gogue........

will take notice and sever Jacobs and silence the BOT in much the way Tuberville did in 2003/2004. Like I said I will always be an Auburn man but I don’t have to continue to support people who run it. If Gogue can’t distinguish between right and wrong then he needs to resign as well. I truly hope that Chizik succeeds but I’m not sure if thats a likely scenario……this will set Auburn back 10 years or more if Chizik can’t salvage this seasons recruiting and put together a strong staff. I have a hard time seeing the recruiting succeeding this season…….the entire college football fanbase is either stunned or laughing. There is no way to spin this with words thats for sure its a mess and the people responsible think they are untouchable. We have freaking Mike Dubose for an Atheletic Director………surely this is some kind of purgatory…….am I in hell?

Those who know...

will he be a “Maverick” or a “Company man”? Is he a “players coach”? We know he has credibility on Defense but what type of offense does he run?

by tigerstripe on Dec 13, 2008 5:17 PM CST reply actions

This is the coach...

…..that hired Wayne Bolt. All 500 pounds of him, after Bolt got fired from UAB. This year, ISU gave up 176 yards per game on the ground. Overall, the Cyclones gave up a whopping 452 yards per game. Who did they play? South Dakota State, Kent State, Iowa, UNLV, Kansas, Baylor, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Colorado State, Missouri, and Kansas State. They gave up 418 points, or 34.8 per game!

…..On offense, Robert McFarland managed 380 some odd per game, against that slate. Chizik’s ISU team scored 316, or 26.3 a game. (A lot better than Auburn did… 17 or so!) ISU actually ran a fairly balanced attack, passing it 438 times, and rushing it 403 times. ISU was actually ok, on offense. McFarland was the offensive coordinator of Central Florida offense in the early 2000’s. His offense put up 42 points on Bama’s homecoming, in 2000.

……I haven’t watched ISU any, but with CFU, McFarland seemed to like a split back pro set, with three wide. Lots of short passes, and draws.

by Acid Reign on Dec 13, 2008 5:44 PM CST up reply actions

I see a pattern...

Chizik goes undefeated at AU, leaves and goes to TX. Who replaces him? Muschamp.
Chizik leaves TX and goes to ISU. Who replaces him? Muschamp.
Therefore Mushcamp to HC at ISU and then to AU when Chizik leaves. It could happen…

Wait and See

Up here in cold Iowa, the cupboard was bare when Chizik arrived. Talent has been upgraded though it has not yet played out on the field. It is a kick in the gut to Cyclone fans because he had folks believing. TV news reporting here that he signed for $2 million. You should have taken Turner Gill. I can only hope that Iowa State can do something to get him to head our direction. If Auburn had been looking two years ago, I would guess that most would think that this was a great hire. He was the hottest coach in the land coming off that national championship. Two years in a very tough spot did not turn him into a bad coach. Most in Big XII country see this as a step down for Chizik as dominance has shifted to the west and the north.

Wow!

As a Bama fan, I was ecstatic when you guys fired Tubbs, but I didn’t celebrate because I knew it could end up bad for Bama. I thought if you guys went for Leach, we would have a tough time with your offense. I thought you guys would end up with an up and coming new coach, for sure. Even if you didn’t get a winner, I figured you would go with at least a guy that could recruit. Then, I start seeing guys names I’ve never heard of. I see Barners excited over a guy with a losing record in the MAC. Now this? I shoud be over here jumping up and down because we are now garaunteed to beat you for the next few years, but I’m not. I’m just stunned. Everyone has aready posted Chizik’s low-lights, so I won’t repeat. But, wow, this guy sucks! This is even bad for Bama fans, cuz it makes our state look retarded! With you guys hiring this douchebag, and the Vols getting a loser with Kiffin, the Tide will surely have a nice few years. I won’t rub it in. Despite six years of “fearing your fingers,” I’m actually feeling so sorry for you guys now, there’s no fun in it. My condolences. Hey, keep that Jay Jacobs guy around for a while:)

Good post from rolltidefromaz…especially the “cuz it makes our state look retarded!” line. Nick Saban is saying, “THANK YOU, AUBURN!” Now he’ll get EVERY top recruit in the state. Chizik: I'm `Auburn through and through'

Posted by Charles Goldberg, Birmingham News December 13, 2008 9:03 PM
Link: http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/12/chizik_im_auburn_through_and_t.html

Here’s an excerpt below:

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Here are Chizik’s official words, through Auburn media relations:

``Through my travels in coaching over the last 23 years, there’s one place that I’ve always wanted to return to and that is Auburn," Chizik said. "The tradition of the Auburn football program combined with the passionate fans and their love for Auburn are second to none.

``My family and I are Auburn through and through, and look forward to being part of the Auburn family and community."

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

That’s strange,…I think I hear a violin playing in the background.

Wasn’t this the same guy who talked trash about Auburn on the way out the door just a few short years ago? Sure it was. All of a sudden when he’s enriched with the head coach position at Auburn, he is an Auburn lover.

Damage control and socialization of the Auburn fan base will be in full swing now from this point forward,…with the loving assistance of Auburn media relations.
