Auburn Fans React To The Hiring Of Gene Chizik

I feel the same
After being told we were going to take our time, find the fight fit for Auburn, and Money was no object, I was optomistic, even though Jay Jacobs sounded like an idiot at his press conference. And then we get a big kick in the face with GENE Chizik, who not only isn’t a poven head coach, but also one who made snide coments about Auburn as he headed out for Texas. So does that sound like the best fit for Auburn to you?

I keep hoping
that this was a case where the media jumped the gun. That is was too early to call. That maybe just maybe this is not a done deal. If Chizik can not handle the pressure at ISU, he is toast in the SEC.
Hope everyone is wearing their seat belts, this may be a bumpy bumpy ride.

Well
It was reported Yesterday that Muschamp would be named today, and that we were offering the job to Spurrier, so maybe!!

I keep telling myself
over and over again: “I’m behind Coach Chizik” “I’m behind Coach Chizik”.
But then I see the headline and think…. “this can’t really be happening.” It just can’t.
Fundamental question: "Does Jay Jacobs work for the alumni? Just the donating alumni? Just the administration? Just Bobby Lowder?

I now know
How Alabama fans felt when they heard Mike Price would be the head coach of Alabama, Wonder does Chizik like nudy bars, here’s hoping, I would be willing to take one loosing season if it would get us a good coach.

Dude Mike Price was no where near ......
this bad. Mike Price is winning at UTEP……if the worse thing we had to worry about were a few strippers or hookers that can be handled…..just like Dyes marital bliss and fondness of whiskey.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Thanks for the heads-up...much appreciated.
I’m going to pull out some of the salient comments from this article for people to read. This is scary stuff.
Here are some excerpts down below:
———————————————————————————————————————————————————
What the hell Auburn is thinking is anybody’s guess.
And who cares. Because it just unburdened Iowa State of its most unprepared, overmatched and incompetent head coach of the modern era.
The red flags began popping up almost immediately. When Chizik said that winning is hard everywhere – that it was hard to win at Texas and Auburn, too – you knew he had no comprehension of the task at hand.
It’s not hard to win at Texas or Auburn; it’s hard to lose.
And when he made the players spend 20 minutes of the first spring practice of 2007 precisely lining up their helmets, you wondered if a real life Captain Queeg hadn’t taken over the ISU football program.
Chizik’s game day performance speaks for itself and his Saturday state of confusion was boderline comical, if you subscribe to the idea that it’s better to laugh than to cry. He might someday have the mental capacity to manage a game as head coach, but it’s not there yet. The next opposing coach that Chizik outsmarts will be the first. Without superior athletes, he was rendered impotent as a coach and when all three phases became his ultimate responsibility, he gagged on it. Chizik coordinated defenses at Auburn and Texas; but as a head coach, all he coordinated was disarray. The Cyclone sideline resembled a fire drill more often than not in crucial situations and the number of delay of game penalties and wasted time outs that could be attributed to him and his staff was a career’s worth, not two season’s worth.
But when you consider the games that his Iowa State teams choked away against very beatable opponents these last two autumns, even better players might not have mattered. Because the players he had at Iowa State were collectively good enough to go .500 or better in each of his two seasons in Ames. He and his coaching staff were the problem, not the players. Had the coaches been as good as the players, ISU would have won more games. Even if the players were horrible – say 5-19 horrible – that still means that Chizik and his staff generated a grand total of zero wins with their talent. The players, of course, were not 5-19 horrible, which means the reality is that Chizik and staff cost Iowa State victories as opposed to making them happen.
The real story of the last two days was the Chizik was not up to the task and he knew it. As did many of us. It’s nothing short of a blessing that Auburn took him off Iowa State’s hands. It was quick and painless and just gives ISU a one-year head start on cleaning up the mess that Chizik created. He never hesitated to let people know how much work there was to be done and what a bad situation he stepped into. Well, the next guy will have it a lot worse, thanks entirely to Chizik. But the next guy will probably be a lot better head coach, so it’s still a net gain for Iowa State.
It’s Auburn’s problem now. While he has a better chance of winning in general there – because he’ll have better players – he’ll be up against it in a job where so much is riding on one rivalry game a year. Beating Alabama trumps all else at Auburn and Nick Saban will probably floss with Gene Chizik on an annual basis. It’s a coaching mismatch of epic proportions. I mean, if Mike Sanford and Tom Amstutz and Doug Martin hand you your lunch with inferior talent, what’s Saban going to do with superior talent? When the clock ticks down to 0:00 on future Iron Bowls, there will be nothing left to do but I.D. the Auburn bodies.
Good luck, Auburn, you’ll need it.

2005 Iowa State
Just took a look at Iowa State before a new coach came. They had defeated state rival Iowa by 20 points, 23-3. They also defeated Big 12 teams Oklahoma State 37-10, Texas A&M 42-14, K State 45-17, and Colorado 30-16. They went to a bowl game which they only lost by 3 points. The next season comes their savior Gene Chizek.

The only good thing
is that this choice for a head coach will also be the end of Jay -I’m in way over my head -Jacobs as AD….This is our version of Mike Shula as head coach at the other school.

You Can Have Him!!!
I am an Iowa State graduate and have been a fan for 35 years. I still can’t understand why our AD, Jamie Pollard, drove Dan McCarney out and hired this joker, Gene Chizik. I am glad that you guys have him now! Dan McCarney was a good coach who got the best out of the talent that he had. With mediocre talent, he took ISU to 5 bowl games. Compare that to Gene Chizik’s 2-19 record!!! I would take Dan back in a minute. Also, Gene Chizik has about as much personality as wall paper. He never even tried to show that he enjoyed being in Ames, Iowa.

Here's how one Auburn fan and friend of mine reacted...
and there are probably many many more out there like this one, too.
This is an email they sent to Jacobs today.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Mr. Jacobs
I have no words to express how I feel about the hiring of Chizik as the head football coach at Auburn University. How can anyone be this devoid of wisdom. I have been an Auburn fan for 40 years. I went to school during the Barfield years for goodness sake. During this entire period I have never once even considered wavering in my allegiance to Auburn.
As of now I will turn in my tickets. (scholarship) I will not send another dime of support to the University, and I will join all efforts towards the removal of you and everyone else involved in this ridiculous hire.
You and Dr. Gogue may think you can sit in your ivory towers protected by the powers that be, (and you know to whom I am referring) but you forget Auburn is a grassroots university. Hard working men and women made Auburn the great university it is today. I hold fast to the belief that it is the spirit that lives in these same men and women which will cause us to band together and throw you and the rest of your crowd out on your ears.
It cannot happen soon enough!!!!
Sincerely,
XXXXXXXX

And they also reacted like this...
with an email sent to Gogue today. He said he purposely said “Mr. Chizik” versus “Coach Chizik” because he doesn’t view Chizik worthy of being called a coach with regard to Auburn’s football team.
————————————————————————————————-—————————————————-
Dr. Gogue’s,
I am writing this with great hopes that the reports of the hiring of Mr. Chizik are false. I had planned to write you to let you know of my extreme displeasure concerning the fact that Chizik was given the honor of being granted a interview. I was shocked that a man who made such negative comments about Auburn as he abruptly exited for Texas would actually be interviewed. Now it is being reported that he will be our next head coach. Until I know for sure I am going to believe that those in charge at the University I love so much could never be this moronic.
If this report is true I make a promise to you. I will turn in my season tickets, I will no longer support Auburn financially, and I will help in any efforts to assure that the ones responsible for this action are removed from Auburn forever.
In this time of financial trouble you will find many will discover other uses for their money rather than giving it to a University who couldn’t care less about their alumni.
Sincerely,
XXXXXXXX

And wanting Coach Turner Gill to come to Auburn...
he reacted like this by sending Coach Gill this email today.
———————————————————————————————-—————————————————-
Coach Gill,
When Auburn began it’s search for a new football coach I had no real favorite to replace Tommy Tuberville. This was strange because as an Auburn graduate and a fan for almost 40 years, I usually have a definite opinion concerning the direction of Auburn Football.
All of this changed when I began to research Coach Turner Gill. I began to read about you because person after person on my rivals site encouraged the readers to take a hard look at you. This started way before you were mentioned as a serious candidate. As I read about you and heard you interview I knew Auburn University needed Turner Gill.
You see, Auburn is much more than a football factory. It is a university which was built by hard working men and women. A university where strong character is still a quality to be admired, and worth the effort to obtain. Our football has a rich tradition, but has also suffered many strange blows. Undefeated seasons without a chance to compete for the National Championship. Championships won without being voted into the position.
Our student body is very unique for a state school. Conservative by most standards and a large percentage of believers. Three directors of some of the nation’s largest Christian camps told me independently of one another that Auburn was far and away where they got their best counselors. These camps are located in MO, TX, and NC.
You also probably know that Coach Tuberville and Auburn are responsible for training and equipping chaplains for football teams. Due to this effort, every team in the SEC has a chaplain. Can you imagine the number of young men who have come to know the Lord due to this effort?
At the same time we have a passion for football and winning. We do not want to win at any cost, but we desperately want to win. We have a new force across the other side of the state who believes there is no cost too great to win. We needed a man with and incredible drive and even more intestinal fortitude to beat this team and their state wide machine. I believe in my heart this man was you.
At least 75% of the over 4,000 thousand Auburn Rivals members and almost every fan I talked with personally had come to the same conclusion as I. Many of us had already begun to pray for you. (as for me I will continue to do so) The Auburn fan base had made you the overwhelming choice to be our next coach. Tonight, we are painfully aware of the man we missed as our coach and friend.
Please know that the powers that be at Auburn do not reflect the personality of the school or alumni. I have no idea how people who are so radically different than the people they represent came to power. I have always been saddened by this fact…tonight more than ever.
I will forever more be a fan of Coach Turner Gill and even more so, Turner Gill the man. Please know there are hundreds of thousands of Auburn fans who feel exactly the same.
I hope one day we will meet face to face. I know we will in heaven. Until one of these, you remain in my thoughts and prayers.
In Christ,
XXXXXXXX

Chizik is not the right choice for Auburn
I am an alum of Texas Tech and have a graduate degree from Texas and currently reside in Birmingham. I am very familiar with Chizik and I can tell you given Auburn’s tradition of being a powerhouse in the nation’s premier conference he is not the best choice. Heck, he wasn’t even the best fit in the Big XII North division, which is a step down from the Big XII South (where Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech reside). In the high pressure SEC Chizik will be a complete failure. Perhaps his performance will be a shade better than what it was at Iowa State because he will have access to Auburn’s recruiting base but even then I am skeptical.
Give him a year or two and see how it goes (probably terrible), then y’all try and get rid of him as soon as you can.

Give him a chance
Lets be honest. Unless Jacobs hired someone like Stoops or Carroll, no one was going to be happy. We set expectations that were too high. NO ONE who was listed as a potential candidate would have excited the fan base..and that includes Turner Gill. Jacobs claiming that money was no object led us to believe we were going to get a Stoops-esq coach. Give Chizik a chance and maybe we will be surprised. The only thing hurting recruits right now is the negativity on these blogs. Remember that Dye and Tubs were considered bad hires as well. They turned out to be great years for us.

But Chizik has done little to earn the respect you so willingly want to give him. Just b/c you settle, doesn’t mean everyone else can’t be upset about the hire.

Respect?
The man led Auburn to an undefeated season, won assistant coach of the year, and then won a NC at Texas, and you don’t think he deserves respect? Iowa St. does not look good on his record. But he did not have access to SEC talent. I was as shocked by this hire as anybody, but he deserves a chance to show what he can do. And you can be sure he is going to be eager to prove the masses wrong.

From Iowa to the SEC
Great hire War Eagles. He’ll be there long enough to instill the “Chisnik” lingo and bolt for a DiV II program after he encounters the same problems that Tuberville enountered but at least he won at Auburn. Granted a change was need but this is only a band aid in hopes that Gene can recruit immediately due to his ties at Auburn and Texas. But all in all, this was the worst hire in all of college football. Why didn’t you guys for for Charlie Winless Wiess or even hire Bentonville HS’s secondary coach. Disgusted but no matter my opion, you must give the man at least 3 years to prove himself. He lost at Iowa b/c he had his recruits in the second year and most were frosh and sophs. But he lost at Iowa….says it all. Good luck in the SEC this year.

The healing process...
Seems like I recall Tuberville saying something like he was going to stick around Auburn now to help with the healing process in switching from him over to a new coach,…though at the time it was unknown who the new coach would be. Given the meltdown among Auburn fans over the hiring of Chizik (me, included), I wonder if he is now thinking twice about that,…he may go back to Jacobs and ask for a raise to cover the extra effort it’s going to take…..LOL.
I wonder if he’s had any anger management counseling training…….

One Thing To Say
You guys act like a bunch of little girls!!!!! He is going to get the job done, period.
by BadAssTiger on Dec 14, 2008 11:51 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Another thing to say
Saying doesn’t get it done. He has to run on his record as a head coach and it is pathetic to say the least. He is supposed to be a defensive genius and Iowa State gave up huge points. He played against horrible teams and lost big to them. He is supposed to be a good recruiter yet didn’t bring much to Iowa State, in fact, he has a reputation of being ice cold. That will win over Mom and Pop. No, this is a horrible choice. We are an Auburn family and our daughter is attending there now, but we call them as we see them.
by Titusville Tiger on Dec 14, 2008 1:21 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
And Another
What expertise do you geniuses bring to the table? What scouting skills do you possess? I will take his former players opinions over yours, that’s for damn sure. Have you ever been successful at any level of organized sports? Your sitting around bitching about what he didn’t get done at Iowa State does not get it done either. Iowa State is just like Mississippi State, they are just there! Remember, Gene was in the same position as Muschamp-considered the hottest coach in America before he took the job at Iowa State. The only difference is the Coach Chizik has a National Championship Ring!!!!! PineRider!!!!

Your ignorance is stunning....
You sound as if you would have been happy w/ the Miss Cleo hire that LSU Jonno was talking about earlier.
Seriously, is there anyone you would not be supportive of hiring? What has Chizik done to deserve such respect from you. Do you simply write off the fact that he finished last season quitting by losing 10 straight games?
