Say You Want A Revolution?

To say that the past couple of weeks have been disturbing on the Plains is like saying -2 degrees outside is chilly. It is a similar understatement that Jacobs made with the Chizik hire. While some have come out in support of Chizik, many of us are having a hard time swallowing what that means. Suddenly, Auburn has been thrown under a very unflattering spotlight tainted with images of racism and bigotry. Is this sort of attention warranted? Maybe, maybe not.

Those whose purpose it is to ensure Auburn's integrity are misusing their power. Misusing their power to a point that taints all that is wonderful and true about Auburn and Auburn tradition. As fans your hands are seemingly tied. Support the Coach; support the decision or you are not a real Auburn fan. As a non-alumni, I get that not-a-real-fan card thrown in my face a good bit. It doesn't hold water, and is frankly unbecoming. The truth is that Jacobs will never come out and say, "Yeah that Turner guy looked great on paper, but dude, did you notice? He's black!". We also will never know (for sure) if Lowder and Ranes were behind closed doors throwing money at the situation to make an 'undesireable' hire go away. I have read many comments on this subject that frankly disturb the hell out of me.

Why wasn't it a big deal when Alabama hired Shula over Croom? What have y'all been smokin'?? It was a huge deal! I was in West Virginia at the time, and yes it was in the news up there, and not in a flattering way. Check out this link from an old New York Times article College Football; Legends' Shadows Don't Scare Alabama's Shula

This is not just about Auburn, people! It is about a hiring system that is broken, and Jacobs let US look like the idiots with a problem.

Why isn't it a big deal that Syracuse passed on Turner Gill? Seriously? The Orangemen hired a guy that actually knows how to win games. The first year (2006) that Doug Marrone was OC with the Saints, they completely turned the team around and made it the NFC Championship Game. Additionally, Marrone has ties to the NFL, those future Dwight Freeney's out there might really dig that. Additionally, at the time of this hire, Gill was still in the mix at Auburn. Auburn vs. Syracuse, which is the better job? If you don't know the answer, are you a real Auburn fan?

Why is the Chizik hire such a big deal? Umm, because Auburn is a high profile job. Because Tubs brought us to the forefront of the SEC. Because the BOT and puppet Jacobs mishandled Tubs' tenure. At the end of the search, there seemed to be two people. One person (8-5) who knew how to win conference games and a conference title as a head coach, and another person (2-10) who couldn't win a single conference game. I thought winning Conference games were important, but what do I know? I am just a girl. The hiring of Chizik was shocking. If he was the clear choice, why wait so long to hire him? Especially in comparison to who he was up against, a proven winner as a head coach. The only tangilbe difference, however shallow it may be, is the race of the two candidates. Sorry, sportsfans, there it is. The big cyclone in the room.

My point? You can put your head in the sand. Maybe you just want to move on. But if there is bigotry campus that high up in the chain of command, can any of us stand by and do nothing? If you love Auburn, can you really stand by and let it happen? I am not advocating boycotting Chizik or the Auburn football team.  None of us will know if Chizik is the right man for the job until we square off September 5th against LaTech. When I stated in a comment, that the Jays could never take my Auburn spirit away, I meant it. They can only destroy Auburn and what Auburn means to each of us if we let them.  Stand behind Chizik and those Auburn Tigers that we love. But you don't have to blindly support the BOT and the Jays to be a real fan. If you don't like what is going on then pick up a pen and start writing!!! "Say you want a revolution; we all want to change the world".  War Eagle!

Sorry....

correct me if I am wrong, but aren’t Antarrius Williams, Carlos Rodgers, and Walter McFadden black? There were others at the press conference in SUPPORT of Chizik. You know, I don’t get it. This is a stupid subject to be harping on. Refer all race cards to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave starting January 20th.

If Chizik's record was 19-5 instead of the other way around,

no one would be playing the race card. I am not saying that it is right, but unfortunately, that is what is going on.

Chizik.....

recruited those guys or coached those guys and has a personal relationship (friendship) with them they are supporting their friend. It is as ridiculous for any of us to defend the charge of racism as it is for others to make it. For one think about who you’re defending…..Bobby Lowder? Jay Jacobs? Jimmy Rane? Are you serious? If anything use the tool that has been given you……it is added pressure to place against those that are ruining the thing we support and love. We don’t know if the charge of racism is founded or not….so why go into a knee jerk reaction and defend it? The best thing in my opinion is to spend the energy making sure that it doesn’t apply to Auburn University which is not the BOT or Jay Jacobs or Jay Gogue…..its all of us, the fans, students, and alumni. Charles is someone I have always enjoyed as an entertainer, an athelete, celebrity……most of the time when he runs his mouth he usually just comes off sounding silly……but this time he struck a nerve….and if his intentions were anything but good it wouldn’t hurt near so bad. Do I know that racism was an issue? No. Can’t say it was or wasn’t. But it is certainly feasible. Choose your battles wisely.

Race cards...

I hate when people pull the race card. And it seems like they do it alot. Especially in the south. They love to pull the race card in the south.

Its like you said Tiger, we will probably never know why we hired Chizik over Gill. Barkley is gonna say what Barkley wants to say. It has always been that way and will probably always be that way. His guy didn’t make it on staff and now he is lashing out against that. Even he admitted that in conversations with Gill, Turner had doubts about wanting to coach in the SEC because he had a white wife and felt that the pressure of that fact would become a problem with many of the supporters. Even Barkley admitted that he told Gill that it could become a problem for him after Gill told Barkley his concerns. Given those doubts it makes me wonder if he would have even accepted the job in the first place. Do we even know whether or not he was offered and simply said, “no thanks”. Hell Chizik could have been the first one that we offered that would accept the job in the 1st place. Given the fact that everyone knows that our BOT’s run this program and unless your willing to follow their rules you could end up “Jetgated” in a year or 2. What coach in their right mind would want that kinda pressure on them. Then add in the pressures of having racial tension because of your families’ diversity into the mix and you’ve got a receipt for failure. But since a black man on a national stage pulled the race card nothing else seems to matter. No other explaination will do. Its simply a black and white racial thing. No other explainations needed.

I for one wanted Gill. I could care less if he was married to a man, let alone a white woman. This is football, not the million man march. Race simply has no bearing on the field of play. The best team wins. All black, All white, or all mixed. It makes no difference.

Perhaps Chizik was simply hired for the fact that he had more ties to the south than the other applicants. They felt he could recruit the schools quicker than Gill because he already had relationships in place with those coaches. Hoping that Auburn could rebound quicker from this rather than waiting 4 or 5 years for Gill and his staff to establish themselves well enough to start to get those better athletes.

Perhaps they just decided to get in a staff that was made up of Auburn people. Alabama as well as other schools do it all the time. Why can’t Auburn? Is it possible that they decided after everything that went down with Tuberville that they(BOT’s) wanted to get in someone that would work with them rather than shut them out. Which Gill surely would have done. He told Barkley that he would demand total autonomy on his program. Leading me to believe that they wanted someone to work with them and at times take orders from them. I’m sure that Gill would have resisted that kind of intrusion. Forcing another Tuberville era of football between the Coach and the BOT’s. Which is the way it should be but we are at Auburn. Its their way or the highway. Ask Tommy who wins out in the long run.

There are so many other things that could have happened for us to go in the direction of Chizik instead of Gill. Why does race have to be at the top of the list?

I can tell you of this though. If race and bigotry was infact the deciding factor here then your right Tiger we as Auburn people should’nt stand for it. We should demand that those relics be removed from the Board as well as fire the President, and AD. And anyone else involved with these plantation ways. Auburn has and always should stand for equality in every area of its athletics and educational departments. Nothing less than that will do.

I disagree with one point

“The only tangilbe difference, however shallow it may be, is the race of the two candidates” Maybe it is because the main factor I believe is an intangible one. And that is that Gill wanted to bring his staff with him. The people doing the hiring weree firmly against that. I think that they realized that Gill was going to want to run his team his way with minimal input from the powers that be. However with Chizik, I believe that he so wanted the AU job that he said yes to whatever demands the University made conditional to his hiring. Race may have played a factor as far as recruiting may have gone, but Auburn fans were so behind Gill that it couldn’t have been any fear in fan response. At the end of the day I think the folks sitting around the big table in the athletic department decided that Chizik would be easier to control and that Gill would share a few too many of the characteristics that they hated about Tubs.

With that said I’m behind Chizik. I’m not going to jump ship onb my alma mater, but I do hope that he is man enough to stand up for himself, his program and his players. At the end of the day it will be his butt left hanging in the wind.

I agree with many of those points, but

I also heard that if hired, Gill would contact Rodney Garner, to strengthen his familiarity with the SEC and help with recruiting. I guess though that maybe the BOT didn’t think that was enough and wanted to have their say in the matter instead of leaving it up to the HC. Either way, race or a power struggle, it is Auburn that loses out.

by Tiger on the mountain on Dec 17, 2008 11:01 AM CST up reply actions

What makes it more right if it's a power struggle?

I hear some of you guys saying drop the race issue. Okay, it’s dropped. Now, tell me why Gill wasn’t hired? The only other explanation is the power struggle among the BOT. Either way, as Tiger on the Mountain puts it, Auburn loses out. Listen folks, I’m not one for being a pessimistic individual. I tend to try to look at the lighter side of things until my realistic side takes control.

Now, my realisitic side has taken full autonomy over the entire issue with Auburn. You guys want to know why Saban is doing so well at UA? It’s real simple: He has complete control in his contract. The powers that be can’t meddle in what he’s doing. That’s what Gill wanted, but that’s what the powers that be at Auburn weren’t willing to let happen. Anybody wondering why Auburn’s guys aren’t willing to do that yet? We’ve won too much.

After a few losing seasons, hoping less than more you’ll see change come in 2011. Those individuals will be willing to do whatever it takes for Auburn to get back on the map and in the thick of the SEC power struggle. We’ve had lots of prosperity and the BOT’s are simply too comfortable. They think our success comes from their input. Well, I don’t believe that much at all, but the next two years that watch Auburn football become mediocre at best will prove that they certainly took us out of all the prominence such a short time ago.

Change will come, and you can almost safely bet the next coach at Auburn will be an African American. I just have that feeling.

by Sparkey on Dec 17, 2008 11:51 AM CST reply actions

I hope that the next AU coach.....

is the best coach we can hire…..black or white. I had hoped that would be the case this time but on paper at least its not. I don’t know if Chizik will succeed or not but I do know that the deck is stacked against him. And I also know that regardless of his success or failure the people calling the shots at AU need to be ousted for good. The opportunity has arisen for the BOT and their puppets to be deposed and if the AU family wastes this chance then shame on us. Auburn should continue the pressure on Lowder and the BOT to resign, vacate, get lost, and don’t let the door hit them in the ass on the way out. We only have power as a united voice and if we don’t continue it will be silenced.

From what I can tell, we’re all pretty much behind the same idea. I’m not sure what else we can do.

by Sparkey on Dec 17, 2008 3:47 PM CST reply actions

Are we missing something???

I have lived in the south my entire life…and have seen racism up front and in person. I will ask this…“if Gill had been chosen over a more credited "white” coach would be screaming racism!?" I don’t think so. Good hire or not…he was hired. I believe in Auburn, and I believe this decision, as it stands, was based on experience in the SEC. Not because Gill was black or has a white wife. We are not nearly as backwards as the rest of the country seems to think we are. I am chopping this up to…nothing else better to talk about. Charles Barkley, a great athlete, is a COMPLETE IDIOT! He is using this to get his face on national TV, that is it. A media opportunity…thats it! The more we listen, and allow this to keep going…the more fuel we add to the fire.

But if we want to talk racism in the SEC, let’s talk. A black coach (Croom) was run out of Miss State, and replaced by a white coach (Mullen)…is that racist? UAT…Saban…white…racist? Florida…Meyer…white….racist? Ole Miss…Nutt…white…racist? LSU…Miles….white….racist? USC…Spurrier…white…racist? Arkansas…Petrino…white…racist? UGA…Richt…white….racist? Outside the SEC??? USCal…Carrol…white….racist? Texas….Brown….white….racist? Oklahoma….Stoops….white….racist?

No, I didn’t think so….these are good coaches who are proving, and have proven they belong where they are at. This is ridiculous! Let’s, as an Auburn Family, move on from this. We are bigger and better than media slander…we know better.

For Barkley: Don’t forget where you came from and who made who you are. You are acting like a spoiled child whose hand was slapped from the cookie jar.

by CKTCooper on Dec 17, 2008 7:52 PM CST reply actions

I disagree completely.

Sorry CKTCooper, but I just don’t agree with you at all on why Chizik was chosen. Granted, opinions are like butt holes: everyone has one and they all stink. Still, it’s not the experience in my view. To me, it’s the fact that Chizik desparately wanted out of Iowa State and he loves Auburn. He mouthed off at Texas but he was still reeling from not getting along with the BOT here. Plus, Tubby didn’t let his DC’s have all that much autonomy. So, let’s remember that before we keep making the guy such a saint. In addition, he wouldn’t get rid of Nall and the other cronies which made Auburn force his hand in resignation.

Now, The problem with your whole list of coaches that you just put down is a weak argument at best my friend. Chizik was 5-19 over three years at Iowa State. Turner Gill turned one of the worst programs in the history of college football completely around. I don’t think it was race as much as it was a power struggle. Either way, it screwed Auburn out of a great coach. Wouldn’t it be a great move if we got him as our offensive coordinator?!? The racism comments wouldn’t stop, but they would subcide. Hell, if the offense did great and Chizik didn’t do so well then we might make Gill an interim head coach and see what he can do for a year. Really, why not try to get him for OC? If your argument about Gill is correct that he didn’t have enough SEC experience (Which, I don’t buy into for one second) then get him some experience.

by Sparkey on Dec 18, 2008 1:08 AM CST up reply actions

OK, Maybe...

It wasn’t based solely on experience in the SEC, but it dang sure wasn’t because Chizik is white. That is my argument.

by CKTCooper on Dec 18, 2008 8:27 AM CST reply actions

We don't know that.....

it was based on race or just plain stupidity or both. And Sparkey do you honestly think that Turner Gill who will be a HC at a major program in the next couple of years would go back to being a coordinator? I have some nice beach front property or a bridge you might be interested in purchasing. Defend AU not the BOT or Jay Jacobs……Barkley wouldn’t be screaming racism had a coach been hired that wasn’t riding a 10 game losing streak and if he was it wouldn’t carry nearly the weight with the media that it has. Let the issue be defended by those accused and lets get behind Coach Chizik.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Here is a question

What if Chizik was 10-14 or how about 9-15, is it still a bad hire over Turner Gill?

If you wonder where I got the numbers from, 10-14 would be a better winning percentage than Gill has at Buffalo.

by Mattco on Dec 18, 2008 7:11 PM CST reply actions

If you look at the total record,

that is true, but unarguably, Gill was turning that program around. Every season there was measurable improvement. It is a moot point now, but being hired off of a 10-game losing streak, when the season before you only had 9 games, that is tough. If Chizik had done something similar to Gill, I know that I would have felt more at ease about the hire…but it’s only my opinion, so it’s worth maybe 5 cents (inflation).
