Barkley is an idiot

If he wants more black coaches then why doesn’t he just send in his resume and become one himself. We have lots of black coaches in the NCAA, and they are majority basketball but they are there. He said that black coaches aren’t given the time to build a dynasty, look at Sylvester Croom. He was at MS State for 5 years if I am correct and he never built crap while he was a there except a headache for the fans and administration for their embarrassing seasons that they had. Barkley needs to concentrate on paying his debts instead of starting fires in the south. Support your state, don’t make it look bad. If he runs for Mayor of Birmingham like he says he will do in the future, I hope that he makes himself look as good as Larry Langford.

That's Governor of Alabama!

And yes…if you want YOUR alma mater to prosper, contact the BOT or the AD and don’t go through the media, Charles. Hey we need a basketball HC, maybe if you personally apologize to Bobby Lowder you can be in the running. Oh wait, you’re black…sorry, no luck here. I know you love AU, so act like it and instead of downing us, do something OTHER than trying to make us a media scapegoat.

Honestly

I’m more confused about why Barkley is hell bent on nationally scolding his school than why we hired Chizik.

PALEEEEEEEESE

Charles,
Please stop babbling like that. If you are of the “AUBURN” Family then lets get on with it and support your school. Perhaps you could have done better at “IOWA STATE” … I dont think so though. There is ABSOLUTELY no comparison between the Iowa State and Auburn Regions… I really think if the beloved “Bear Bryant” had been able to go to Iowa State to coach the past two years…. I am sure he would not have recorded many more wins…. Get a little information before you blast the University. Sure Turner Gill would have been a great choice… his coaching record as a head coach is not that impressive 15-22. You have to view this in a matter other than a RACIAL ISSUE…. Chizik has been at Auburn… Turner Gill has not. Chizik has coached and recruited in three great conferences. Coach Gill has not. Coach Chizik has recruited in the south heavily , Coach Gill has not. Although most fans and uninformed tv hosts look at the records of head coaches… other aspects have to be considered. Of the available guys on the list Chizik was a good fit for Auburn. Yes there were other coaches with better records than his… but the fit for Auburn was not there. I, at first thought why not, one of the other guys… but the more I think and research.. I am for Chizik. The players seem to be thrilled, former players seemed to be thrilled, and most LOYAL AUBURN FAMILY MEMBERS seemed to be thrilled and now are behind Coach Chizik. Only time will tell if the decision by the wierd guys the “JAYS” will pay off or be a flop. I for one, think that we have done a good thing. NOW LETS GET BEHIND THE PLAYERS AND the COACHES and say WARRRRRRRRR EAGLLLLLLLLLLE ! ! ! !

Oh yea about GOVERNOR for ALABAMA

If Barkley runs for governor of ALABAMA… I will not vote for him ,,,,, NOT because he is an African American but because HE IS NOT QUALIFIED.

by autigrdude on Dec 17, 2008 10:22 PM CST reply actions

Was anybody even listening??

Barkely is not knocking just Auburn. He is knocking the system. A system that allows only 4 African American coaches out of 120 total. We aren’t talking about hiring people who are not qualified for a job based on race. We are talking about making sure that all qualified people have the same voice in the hiring process. This good ole boy crap has got to go!!!

If Brady Hoke or Gerry Patterson had been hired as the AU head coach, we would not even be having this conversation right now. Seriously, what was your first reaction to the Chizik hire? You can’t tell me that you were thrilled that we got a guy who can’t win a game on the road, no conference wins, especially with the other candidates in the mix…and I mean all other candidates in the mix, both white and black.

Jacobs put Auburn in the spotlight by his questionable hire. Barkley is speaking out about something that he feels is right, and he is not trying to tear down Auburn as much as he is trying to make a difference…at least that is my opinion.

by Tiger on the mountain on Dec 17, 2008 10:57 PM CST reply actions

thanks for being the only person paying attention to what Charles said

all the Auburn fans calling Charles and idiot and telling him to shut up aren’t listening to what the man is saying. he even said if Auburn had hired Brady Hoke or Gary Patterson he wouldn’t be making these comments. it’s the fact they chose a less-qualified candidate that has him questioning if the hire was racially motivated. Charles is a huge donor and he is in the national media. he can say whatever the hell he wants. besides people have been asking him about the hire and Barkley is always gonna tell you exactly what is on his mind. some of the comments on this site that have been coming out since the “race” card got played have been making some borederline racist comments so it’s no wonder people in the media are buying into this hire.

the real truth to all of this is the fact that Charles is just like most of us Auburn fans, he’s PISSED OFF about this terrible hire and would have liked to see his university do something positive and make a big splash…not turn into a joke. if i was in his position i’d have trashed Auburn too.

by suicidewatch on Dec 18, 2008 8:18 AM CST up reply actions

I couldn't agree with you more.

I have been highly disturbed by many of the comments. I don’t think people realize what exactly they are defending and how it sounds racist.

The hire was dumbfounding and that is what King Charles is mouthing off about.

by Tiger on the mountain on Dec 18, 2008 9:44 AM CST up reply actions

One question...
We are talking about making sure that all qualified people have the same voice in the hiring process.

Are you trying to say that Turner Gill has less of a “voice” in the hiring process than other candidates?

by Zandor435 on Dec 18, 2008 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

That is not what I was saying.

In the hiring process, Auburn actually interviewed African Americans for the job. This is in sharp contrast to other programs around the country. In hiring Chizik, they overlooked other more qualified candidates black and white.

Thanks for asking for a clarification.

by Tiger on the mountain on Dec 18, 2008 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

Really?

As “turrible” and irrelevent as Barkley is as an espn announcer, I feel it is safe to say that there was at least one person of non-African-American race that applied for his job, yet was overlooked for unknown reasons. Therefore, I hereby declare that espnn must be a bunch of racist because it is obvious that some alternate races were overlooked for his job.

Just like barkley feels that gill would have been a better coach, it is very likely that any English speaking Hispanic would be a better commentator than Barkley. Espnn obviously didn’t put forth a full financial effort in tracking down the best person for Barkley’s job. That is “turrible!”

by Pwauburn on Dec 20, 2008 11:44 PM CST up reply actions

Sir Charles Apologizes?...

well sort of. He apologizes to Chizik and his family and then attacks him again about his record.

I am not sure if race was a major deciding factor in the decision making process, I surely hope not. However, I do not think that Barkley has justification for the manner in which he attacked his own ALMA MATER and supposed AUBURN FAMILY. By saying the things he said he not only attacked the people in charge but the entire University and Family. If he really wanted to make a difference he should sit down with the administration at AU, not get on national television and disgrace his and our name! The Auburn family is comprised of more than just a few people… the ones in the spotlight now just seem to be overshadowing the rest of us somehow.

Now, after saying that, I agree that someone should standup for the GOOD minority coaches to give them an EQUAL oppurtunity to succeed! I just think Barkley should be the one called out here for his blundering and blaiming of a singular school when there are 119 FBS schools (114 of which also do not have african-american head coaches).

by orange&blue thru&thru on Dec 17, 2008 11:07 PM CST reply actions

Contradicting Mr. Barkley

Wouldn’t what he’s saying and doing be qualified as “racism” as well? What’s the difference? You tell me, sir righteous Charles.

by TaylorTot on Dec 17, 2008 11:48 PM CST reply actions

Barkley,...man,...give it a rest...

It was not ultimately a racial thing,…it was ultimately a “command and control” thing. Do you forget that we have our very own little dictatorship thing going on at Auburn, in that regard? That’s the crux.

by WarEagle99 on Dec 18, 2008 12:01 AM CST reply actions

I'm confused

If Barkley is as invovled with Auburn Athletics as much as he says he is than he should know that the real reason has to do with the “good ol boy system” wanting to be in control of the coach. Gill seems like a great, stand up guy and I think he told them point blank that he wouldn’t roll over for them.

If race really was an issue than why interview black coaches at all? There is obviously something else there. I think Barkley prob knows this, but he is using the situation to spark a debate on black coaches in NCAAFB. It is just sad that he has to drag his school through the mud to do it.

Charles has a point.

Everything he said is right in this interview. Like it or not, he’s right. He’s not just bashing Auburn. He’s saying something is wrong with the whole thing. 4 in all of Division I football isn’t right. Like it or not, it is the truth. Numbers don’t lie. Gill was more qualified than Chizik. So was Garner. Why are you guys so upset with him being right?

by Sparkey on Dec 18, 2008 1:24 AM CST reply actions

I'm not....

mad so much because of what he said about there only being so many coaches in Div 1 football. I’m pissed because he is only looking at the records of the 2 coaches and then making judgments off those facts. However if you add in the others facts that Chizik has coached, recruited, and built relationships in the south, coached for Auburn in the past, has a national championship ring, an SEC championship ring, and coached 2 undefeated teams with top 10 defenses, then things become more clear.

Trust me, i wanted Gill because he would have made a big splash in the SEC. I felt like he would have done a good job as well. I don’t know about his recruiting practices because he doesn’t have much of a resume’ to look at concerning recruiting. He’s young and would have probably stayed until Nebraska called or we ran him off for having too good of a record (85-40 / 52-30 in SEC play). But i’m sure that the powers that be felt like he wouldn’t have played by their rules nearly as easily as Chizik. Hell, if we would have hired him and then Jetgated him after he didn’t do what the “powers” asked, would we then be in the same place with the race card as we are now?

Sure there are alot of black coaches out there that deserve a chance to coach big time football, but its not for Auburn to have to set the bar if they didn’t feel like Gill fit the mold they were looking for in a coach. That mold being a puppet more than likely.

by Paratiger on Dec 18, 2008 9:00 AM CST up reply actions

One point...
4 in all of Division I football isn’t right.

I wouldn’t necessarily concede this point. Disproportionate representation does not necessarily imply that foul play is at hand.

Something that seems to be lost in all of this discussion is the definition of “fairness.” Barkley and others seem to define “fairness” as proportionate representation amongst NCAA football coaches. This an absurd standard when you break it down. No one would apply this standard to other professions.

Think of all the Jewish people that are over-represented in banking. Think of all the asians (indians and chinese) who are over-represented in the medical profession. Should we try to apply this standard to the actual atheletes themselves in the pros? Can you imagine someone trying to make an argument that “white people don’t have a voice in the hiring process of these professions because they are under-represented?” They would be rightly mocked and ridiculed for such a statement.

Why the double standard?

by Zandor435 on Dec 18, 2008 10:25 AM CST up reply actions

Well Zandor,

I’m glad you said that, because now I don’t have to, and you get to take the heat. LOL

by LSU Jonno on Dec 18, 2008 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

So let me get this straight

Charles Barkely states that by just looking at the resume Turner Gill was a better choice and I fully agree, however, that’s why every good manager reviews the resumes and then takes additional time to arrange a face to face interview with the applicants that he would like to interview. Let’s face it, anyone can pay someone to write them a good resume, but the job usually goes to the candidate with the best interview.

I think the logical question is did Gene Chizik stand represent himself better in the interviews than Turner Gill? I’m sorry Charles, but since you were not included in the interviews, you’re argument is pretty much worthless.

It’s all about chemistry and Jay Jacobs probably thought that there was better chemistry with Gene Chizik than Turner Gill.

by 83Tiger on Dec 18, 2008 8:11 AM CST reply actions

None of us can make a statement to substantiate or discredit.....

the hiring of Chizik as being a racist hire…….unless you were privy to not only the interview but also the thought process behind the hire. You don’t know if its chemistry or a disdain for dark skin, so why are you defending something that you have no proof of either way…….thats at least as assenine as Barkley making the accusation in the first place. Let it go and let the people accused of racism defend there position. I am not a racist, but then again no one is saying I am are they?

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Dec 18, 2008 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

Wait a minute...

Barkley says that because they hired Chizik, that the reasons were motivated by race. But, he says that had they hired Gary Patterson or Brady Hoke, his reasoning would have been different (read: non-racial). What’s the difference? All those coaches are white. Seems to me that Charles is just upset that they hired Chizik, which is a fair criticism. But to now go and accuse the university of racial preference is reprehensible and totally discredits any argument he could make against Chizik.

Auburn interviewed two black coaches not because they wanted to get some political credit, but because they thought they were viable options. Now that we’re seeing the political fallout from interviewing but not selecting a black coach, you can bet that it’s pushed back the cause quite a few years…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Dec 18, 2008 1:51 PM CST reply actions

He says it's a matter of race because we hired a white dude with a worse record

than a black guy with a better record. He wouldn’ have been upset with those two because they have had success as head coaches, probably better success than Gill.

War Damn Eagle!

by PowerOfDixieland on Dec 18, 2008 6:27 PM CST up reply actions

I dunno, POD...

Check the definition of racism: it’s a belief that one race is inherently superior than others, so by definition, a racist administration would never under any circumstances choose a non-majority coach. Thusly, Barkley’s argument is in shambles if he holds to the ‘other coaches would have been okay’ disclaimer…

Yea, I know. Many people don’t know the true definition of the word. They substitute the term for what’s actually bigotry, prejudice, and xenophobia…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Dec 18, 2008 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

Lol

That would require these guys to actually know the definitions of some English words. That will never happen, because it’s easier to make up shit to say than to actually know wtf you’re saying

by Pwauburn on Dec 20, 2008 11:54 PM CST up reply actions

I still cant figure out why Jacobs didn’t look at all possible candidates and realize there isn’t a better coach out there more qualified then Tommy Tuberville. I do think Chizik will be a good not great coach for us. I still think the biggest issue at auburn is why the fuck Tommy is gone.
Barkley should no best SEC school will most always pick family ties over an outsider. And to think top programs are going to start hiring black head coaches just because, that’s ridiculous. All the great coach started at smaller schools. Turner gill is doing it the right way. He will be at a big program soon enough.

hmmm...

I have a terrible idea Auburn faithful,
Maybe Sir Charles is right. As he pointed out, just look at the odds of the whole of college football.
I think he is using this incident as a forum for a larger, very real issue—not just singling out Auburn.

That being said, I believe that we should stand behind our coach Chizik for better or worse. The hire has been made, and we can go one of two ways. I live 10,000 miles away and got up in the middle of the night to watch or listen to every one of those terrible games—even when I thought the odds were against us. I am sure everyone of you would do the same thing. We need to respect each other—even if we disagree. That is why we are the AUBURN FAMILY

Well shit

Let’s all have a sit in, hold hands, sing cum-by-ma, trip on acid, listen to jerry, and poll every race in America prior to making a freaking decision.

Hey, I’m going to costco in order to purchase some toilet paper; are there any racial opinions I sh
ould be cautious of prior to making such an important decision in our nations future? I’d hate to pick the wrong color paper in favor of anotter characteristic, when it is so obvious to everybody else that color is the most important characteristic;). Thank Gid you guys don’t think race matters.

If we are going to have a sit in,

you need high quality post…acid just makes things fuzzy. OH, and let’s not forget the drums for the all important drum circle portion of the sit in.
