Coach Chizik: Bring Rodney Garner Back Home

Rg_medium

Lose the hat, come back!

As Mean Gene is on the road recruiting this week, very little is coming out about his potential staff hires, including the all-important coordinator slots. I've got a great idea to bring some positive press attention our way--call Rodney Garner back home immediately. Offer him DC if you have to. His alma mater needs him desperately, especially in his chosen field of expertise--recruiting. Other than a Jacobs resignation, this could be the best news we could hear by Christmas.

Never mind the politics involved in such a hire: Garner himself interviewed for the position that was ultimately given to a coach popularly deemed less deserving than almost all the candidates. So what?  Here's a good chance to move up, if he's granted DC, or at least make a lateral move back to his alma mater, where his services are greatly needed. Hell, have his old coach Pat Dye write him one of those Dye letters we're seeing if that'll help motivate him. Also, what about it being potential on-the-job training for a step up to head coach? I'm very confident that Garner might have had a serious shot as our HC if he had coordinator experience on the resume. If he climbed up the ladder to that position at Auburn, he could be in a great position to one day succeed Chizik.

There were always hushes and rumors why Garner left his recruiting coordinator position at Auburn under Bowden to go to Tennessee. Some said that his efforts might have been a little bit, how do you say, zealous? Who knows for sure. Garner was with the Vols for two years, but had landed at Georgia by 1998 under Jim Donnan.  He's flourished at Georgia, not only surviving as recruiting coordinator under Mark Richt, but being promoted to assistant head coach as well. But curiously, after the Auburn administration flipped over to Tuberville in late 1998, no one ever gave Garner serious consideration to bring him back in spite of gradually making a name for himself as a recruiting dynamo. It's rumored that the main reason was that 'zeal' we mentioned earlier and that Tubs was under strict orders to run a clean program. What leads me to question that excuse is the fact that if anyone out there is perceived to run a cleaner program than Tuberville, it's Richt. It's highly doubtful that Richt would allow such shenanigans to run amok under his program if the rumors were in fact true.

And a secondary factor for making such a hire is that you remove him from one of your biggest competitors. Let me tell you, Georgia is very fearful that Auburn might try to hire away not only Rodney Garner, but former Auburn tackle Stacy Searels, too. Searels is Georgia's current offensive line coach and has been doing a fantastic job there by all accounts. A loss of Garner might also break the Bulldog's recent lockdown of the talent exodus from the state.

Since recruiting classes have started to be ranked, Garner has only put together quite a few top 10 classes for Georgia. Most would consider him to be the perfect counter-weight for Saban's efforts out of Tuscaloosa, especially with Garner's all-important inroads in the Atlanta market. Just as football the game is about momentum, so is football the program. Perception IS reality for most folks, and the collective mood about a particular program can be altered just by how people interpret certain events, sometimes even leading to self-fulfilling prophecies. Publicity-wise, Auburn is in desperate need of some positive news coming out of the football program to give them some momentum, and hiring Rodney Garner could serve as our fumble recovery deep in our opponents territory late into the 4th quarter...

Bring him.....

I think you are correct that it would be a win for Auburn…but…
we need to be very careful here. On the surface it would be a tremendous move on Auburn’s part. We could bring him back, name him “coach in waiting” and that would take the air out of the bad press and prove that we did not choose Chizik on race.
However, if the under current rumor mill has some validity and he is a little “zealous”…it could potentially be a disaster in the making.

I hate to be a back seat driver but...

I have to wonder what Chizik is waiting on.

I haven’t heard anything regarding Garner being an over zealous recruiter, but I would imagine that if there was any truth to that rumor, that something would have surfaced at some point in the last 10 years.

I say conduct an informal background check just to confirm that there are no skeletons in the closet, and then swoop down and take Garner and Searels from UGA so fast that it makes Mark Richt’s head spin.

I think that Chizik

is waiting to work on his coaching staff to maximize the face time he has with the recruits until they shut it down until Jan. 5th. Maybe next week we will have a better idea about coordinators and what not. Since Garner has been clean at UGA, why not bring him back?

There's a reason...

that Tubs didn’t bring him home. I love Garner and I’m jealous of the recruits he’s brought to Tennessee and Georgia, but we’ve got to keep this program above board. I’m not in the conspiracy camp with some folks (i.e./ hear Finebaum’s program from earlier in the week) but there are definitely people out there waiting to rat out Auburn at the earliest misstep. I just don’t think it’s Saban.

He’d be great for the program, but If he comes he’d have to be on a short leash as far as offering any, ahem, inducements, to recruits. Otherwise it could be a net loss.

And who would put him on a short leash.....

for doing what Lowder wants?

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

The checks written to Tee Martin.......

were not some phantom whisperings they were concrete…….too bad the NCAA swept them under in appreciation of fat Phils cooperation in nailing the bammers.

How culpable...

…was Garner in all that, do you think? My memory has faded quite a bit…

Garner was tagged as the hand off guy...

and lets not forget that Garner took Tee Martin to Tennessee when Bowden gave him the boot.

UPDATE

I heard this afternoon that Auburn got permission from Georgia to talk to Stacy Searels about a coaching position. You can probably infer from that news that if they wanted to speak with Garner, they probably would have only gone to the well once. We shall see…

Are you allowed...

…to get double-secret permission the first time?

:-)

by War Eagle Atlanta on Dec 20, 2008 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

Searels is being talked too...

I live in Athens, and my family is good friends with the Searels… Its true they are talking to him and hiring him would be one of the best things Auburn can do… he’s a good man and a great coach. I REALLY hope this happens.

by BoldAU on Dec 21, 2008 2:17 PM CST up reply actions

He's the coach I worry about losing the most

Losing Garner would certainly hurt recruiting, but what Searels did with our offensive line this season was short of a miracle. The guy is a great coach and any school would be lucky to have him.

I've been called an idiot on here.

And, I guess they must be right because I can’t figure out what the hell is going in this whole thing. I don’t understand why the hiring process takes as long as it does either. Pick out five guys you want and go get one of them. Possibly, I take things too simple for what they really are. I suppose this is a highly complicated procedure, I just don’t understand the why part.

Is it just me or is that search firm really not earing their paycheck?

by Sparkey on Dec 21, 2008 4:54 AM CST reply actions

Not to bust your bubble, but...

…Garner’s already confided to his players that he’s remaining in Athens. Stacy Searels, on the other hand, is completely up in the air.

Not bursting my bubble

I’m not sold on anybody in the GA staff to tell you the truth. I haven’t seen that team act with any class since Richt got there. I’m okay with not getting anybody from there.

My reply was a general comment to the post above, not directed at you

I honestly think an Auburn grad/fan as yourself is knows better to talk about a program with class. Sure, Tubs represented the University well and didn’t have any major run-ins, but for a fan of the SEC school with the most major NCAA infracations of our community, I believe your leash for speaking about classiness is quite short. Sure, we’ve had our fair share of infractions as every other school, but to think that Mark Richt is an unclassy man is just silly. Is he too soft on discipline sometimes? That’s a fair argument. But to say that a Christian man that’s as respected as he is within the coaching community runs a program without any class is just silly and one that I take offense to.

Fortunately...

I think we lag Alabama in violations, too. We’re always playing second fiddle to those boys in one thing or another…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Dec 22, 2008 10:20 AM CST up reply actions

Haha

That’s one thing we can all agree it’s okay to lag Alabama in.

I hope we do.

I did not mean to attack Richt on a religious level by the way. I’m just going by the behavior I’ve seen his teams show when they win. They haven’t behaved themselves very well. I.E. the jumping up and down on the endzone for FL. I couldn’t stand how Tubby let our players get away with that at LSU without some sort of heavy repremand. I’m sorry I’ve offended you. That is honestly not something I meant to do and sometimes you must think before you blog I’m becomming more and more aware of that.

As far as infractions go, I wasn’t even referring to that. I know all too well about Auburn’s probation experience and we certainly haven’t been a poster child for good behavior in that regard. No, what I meant was how Richt’s players act during a game. Like the time the entire team dancing to Solja Boy (If I didn’t spell that right I don’t care) while they destroyed AU during the natorious Blackout of 2007.

Plus, to tell you the truth, Tubby wasn’t as classy as I wanted either. Maybe, I’m too old-school. Still, Tubberville didn’t do near enough when we jumped on LSU’s Tiger. No one, and I mean NO ONE HATES LSU LIKE I DO. After working at the Heart of Auburn Hotel for a while and dealing with all the SEC fans, I learned that LSU fans had the worst behavior of the bunch. I mean damn, one of them almost killed me because I couldn’t give him an extra parking space for his room. The dummy wasn’t even staying at the Days Inn right across from Jordan Hare Stadium. Let me quickly state though, I’m not saying all LSU fans are like that. Just all of the ones I dealt with while working at the Days Inn on South College Street. Just so I don’t seem too biased, Auburn fans weren’t that classy either for the most part. To tell you guys the truth, the team that behaved themselves the best in the SEC was Vanderbilt. The best two teams fans’ that I came into contact with were Washington State and Buffalo.

Ah, I digress. The point is, I personally haven’t seen GA players behave well enough to want that attitude here. Honestly, Tubby’s wasn’t any better either. For that matter, I never thought it was good enough. He always had that smirk and the raising the five fingers at the UA fans was tasteless. I hated that. Now, the fact that I don’t want guys under him here is just how I feel about the team’s attitude. Make no mistake please, that’s not a nock on Richt’s or anyone’s Christianity. Hell, I’m Christian and I’m not going to pick out the specks with the numerous planks I have in my own eyes. All I’m saying, I want someone who has his team behave properly and gets players without cheating. Something Like Duke in basketball though I know how much they’re hated.

Oh, it's cool

I can appreciate outrage over some of the tactics that were employed in ‘07 from the Dawgs. I also appreciate your feelings about Auburn stomping on the LSU logo. I also appreciate though that college football is a game fueled by emotions (which is why I like it so much more than the NFL). Sometimes we forget that these are just 18-21 year old kids and we hold them up to an unreasonably high standard because they’re so visible. I assure you I did plenty of stupid things during my four years in Athens, so I can brush off a lot of the shenanigans to youthful discretion. I can see how that comes across as poorly behaved as well as the off the field stuff. I just think that’s a result of not being directly attached to the program as I am. The only thing most ppl see of a football program is what they do on the field. While I was in Athens, you would see football players out at sites my fraternity was volunteering such as Boys & Girls Club, Salvation Army, etc. Every program has its respected citizens and every program has its “black sheep” if you will. To quote the infamous Mike Gundy, “don’t criticize the kid because he only does the right thing”. Like I said, most people only see what is on national TV or read the articles about the arrests, but every program has far more good than bad, IMO (Auburn included). You just have to be willing to look for it and not go straight for the sensationalist stories.
