Auburn News and Notes - Holiday Edition
Give Chizik an "A" for effort.
Happy Holidays and Good Monday Morning. Christmas week is finally here. I hope you are getting some much needed time off to spend with your family. It still seems weird to not be talking about a bowl opponent. Then again, what hasn't been weird this year?
The big news on the Plains this weekend was the hiring of former Tiger defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads at Iowa State. I guess that shoots to hell Gene Chizik's theory that you have to move to Texas to land a head coaching job. Good for Rhoads. He's a quality individual and one of the best defensive minds in college football.
What happens if he has more success in Ames, Iowa than Chizik has at Auburn? Will that be enough to run Jay Gogue and Jay Jacobs out of town? And where's all the screaming about Iowa State not hiring a minority for its job? Oh yeah, all the screaming was done by our guy, Charles Barkley.
Don't be surprised to see former Auburn assistant Don Dunn follow Rhoads to the Big 12. They've been friends for years and coached together at Pacific many moons ago.
You may not have liked the hire, but you have to give Chizik credit. The man has hit the ground running. When he said he was leaving to recruit after his introductory press conference, he meant it. The guy has been a machine on the recruiting trail, reaching out to as many commitments as he possibly can. He's even dropped in on a couple of new faces.
Over the weekend, Chizik paid a visit to Alabama's Mr. Football, Clint Moseley. The quarterback has not received an offer from Auburn, but that may be about to change. He's someone that both the Tigers and Alabama have stayed away from until recently. Not surprisingly, Alabama has taken a second look after Chizik expressed interest.
Former Auburn running backs coach Eddie Gran is rumored to be in talks with Tennessee. It's believed that he met with Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin this past weekend. I always held Gran in high regard. I still believe he's one of the best position coaches in the conference.
A change of scenery might do him well. Speaking of assistants, I still can't understand why Chizik hasn't tried to retain linebacker coach James Willis. I thought he did a great job this year developing some of the young talent on that side of the ball. He's also highly regarded as a recruiter. Chizik will have a hard time hiring a better coach at that position.
You have to wonder why former Auburn assistant coach and current Troy head man, Larry Blackney didn't get an interview with Jay Jacobs. I know he was involved in the infamous Eric Ramsey case back in the early 1990's and I realize he'll forever be remembered by Auburn people for, "Keep it down home cuz." But that was nearly 20 years ago. People get less time for murder than what he's been given by Auburn.
As a young sports writer for The Auburn Plainsman in the 1980's, Blackney was the first person I interviewed. If memory serves me correctly, I believe he was coaching quarterbacks for Pat Dye. I was scared to death walking into the athletic department. He was a class individual. I'm convinced he could have won at Auburn. What he's done at Troy is nothing short of miraculous.

Larry Blakeney......
has built a formidable small school program and is obviously a very good football coach. I don’t think that Blakeney would ever put himself in the position to be Dye’s or Lowders scapegoat ever again. I also don’t think that AU should bring anyone back into the fold that has any smudge or smear on their resume…..and yes that comment is pointed at Rodney Garner as much as Larry Blakeney. I believe that Larry Blakeney took the bullet for Lowder and Dye, but that doesn’t absolve him in the matter it just means that he took all of the blame instead of only part. Blakeney landed on his feet fast enough after the whole debaucle it makes one wonder how it happened. I root for Troy and root for Blakeney at Troy but I don’t want anyone who I know was part of the reason AU has been on probation back at AU…..its bad enough that Dye has the cush hush job and Lowder is still in power. I am very fearful of the past being repeated…..and if you don’t think that the Red Elephant club would send the NCAA the goods on AU if they ever got the chance again……..they bitch and moan about fat Phil at UT doing it to them, damned hypocrites.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Wouldn't YOU turn in a school if they were cheating and you weren't?

What would be wrong with that? Hell I’d turn Vanderbilt in if I was a coach in the SEC and I found out they were cheating.

And you think that Bama wasn't cheating? lol.....
Jonno never figured you for naive……and if you will acquaint yourself with the Ramsey affair it was never pay for play, it was all taped telephone conversations of him (Ramsey) begging Blakeney for money to help him pay his bills, buy groceries, buy diapers for his baby, etc. Please coach I need money to pay my rent…please coach my baby is hungry, please coach……with Blakeney the whole time telling him Eric this has to be the last time. It was wrong and AU paid for it but Ramseys testimony was purchased by Bama boosters all while Logan Young and other boosters were buying players for Bama. It had nothing to do with Bama’s integrity and everything to do with them siezing the opportunity to damage AU’s program. With LSU lacking the bitter rivalry it might not be possible for you to fathom but it is the gospel.

I don't want that culture at AU by the way.....
and that is why I don’t want Rodney Garner, Wayne Hall, Larry Blakeney, etc….back at AU.

Damn
I can’t understand not keeping Gran. That just doesn’t sit well with me. I’m trying to get behind Chizik, but Eddie was one of the best position coaches in the business. We truly lost a gem with him. I can only guess Chizik simply wants to start completely over and have a new clean slate. Actually, as someone who’s taken leadership jobs in the past, I understand where he’s coming from. He needs his guys in there, but at the same time the players of Tubby could use some familiar faces in the coaching staff to help make the transition process go a little easier. Especially, after losing such a great individual as what we lost after the GA game we need a few same faces I would think. Still, I get his line of reasoning.
I’m beginning to think Chizik might not be such a bad hire afterall.

I was thinking about Gran
and what I came up with is this, it all depends on what offensive system we try to go with. One thing that Gran has always done a poor job with our running backs has been to teach them to catch the ball, and I know this is a talent thing, but it good fundamentals can be taught. He does a good job of teaching them to run forward which is a feat in itself in a day when players are always trying to make a huge play, and that might include running backwards 10 yards before moving forward.
I really hope that Chizik hires both of his coordinators and uses their assistance to hire in the rest of the staff. I would really like this new system to be done right, and not a make shift use of HC assigned assistants trying to fit into a system they don’t know, you know, like we have witnessed the last 5 years.

If I'm not mistaken...
…..The NCAA nearly lowered the boom on Blakeney, on the Ramsey business. He got probation by agreeing never to coach at Auburn, if I’m remembering correctly. Steve Dennis got sanctioned, as well. Don’t know if Pat Dye did or not. There was that Colonial unsecured loan that Ramsey got, right after the taped conversation with Dye (who was on the Colonial Board at the time.). Dye, on the tape, basically non-sequitored, and frankly, sounded like he wasn’t paying attention.
