Top Five Offensive Coordinators?

There are way too many rumors and speculations about whether Tommy Tuberville will return for an eleventh season as the head man at Auburn.  I am confident that he will, so I would like to start the conversation about who should be on his short list for the Offensive Coordinator position.

There are some very good candidates out there, the answer to whether or not they would leave their current position, or comfort zone for the volatile SEC is another issue.  I came up with my top five.  Here they are.  They are open for discussion.  Please feel free to post.

Dave Christensen is the Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach at Missouri.  He has been at Mizzou for 7 years now and with Gary Pinkle getting his long contract extension; it would appear that Christensen would not be the head coach there for a while.  He was the man who made Chase Daniel who he is today.  He is a great spread coach as well. Scratch him off… he became the Head Coach at Wyoming yesterday.

Andy Ludwig is the Offensive Coordinator at Utah.  He has been there for three years and to put it mildly, their offense is solid.  At Utah, he led them to the twelfth rated in total offense in 2005.  In 2005 they were also tenth in passing efficiency.  In 2007 Utah was the 2nd rated rushing team in the country.  His offenses can pass and also run, depending on where his playmakers are.  He might be looking for a BCS job again.  He was at Oregon from 2001-2004, and although he did not have an outstanding team, he was one of the guys Mike Bellotti (Head Coach) believes helped develop the spread at Oregon.   He is my number one choice, now that Christensen is off the table.

Bryan Harsin is the OC and QB Coach at Boise State and has been at that position for three years and we all know what these guys can do.  I know that they are not playing against SEC teams, but you have to start someplace.  He was a QB at Boise, leaving your Alma Mater would be hard, but again, you have to start someplace, and he is not the Assistant Head Coach, Brent Peace is.  His first season as OC the Broncos were undefeated, and were second in the country in scoring offense, sixth in rushing offense and passing efficiency, and 10th in total offense. Boise State also finished first in the WAC in rushing, second in scoring offense and passing efficiency, third in total offense, and fourth in passing offense.  In 2007, his second season as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator, Boise State finished fourth in the nation in scoring and sixth nationally in passing efficiency. The Broncos were also second in the WAC in scoring and passing efficiency and third in rushing, total offense and passing.  He is only 32 years old, and could be a great choice.

Danny Langsdorf is the OC and QB Coach at Oregon St.  He has been there for 6 years but only four at his current position.  He is a key part of Mike Riley’s staff.  Danny was WR coach with the New Orleans Saints before coming to the Beavers.  Before his stint with New Orleans he was the OC for Edmonton Eskimos in 2001.  They led the CFL in total yards that season.  He is a masterful recruiter, and has been the main man during this 2008 season where the Beavers finished second in the PAC-10.  He has also been a Quarterback coach and Tight End coach.

Gus Malzahn is in his second year on the coaching staff at Tulsa. He serves as assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator, as well as quarterbacks coach. Under his direction, the Tulsa offense ranked as the nation's top offense in 2007, gaining 543.9 yards per game. The Hurricane also led Conference USA in passing, scoring, TD passes and passing efficiency, while ranking third nationally for passing, fifth for pass efficiency and 10th for scoring offense.  For those who don’t remember, Malzahn spent the 2006 season as offensive coordinator and receivers coach at the Arkansas.  He did have some issues with Houston Nutt, and that pretty much got him canned.  Tuberville will not put up with his crap, but many folks think that Malzahn is a great choice.  I am not so sure, but he is in the top five because of what he has done in Tulsa.

I know what you are thinking… most of these guys are West Coast coaches.  And I left one major name off the list.  I personally believe that Chuck Long is staying where he is or taking a head coaching position.  You would be correct in that, but why not come to the SEC and see if you can make a name for yourself, and move up the coaching ranks.  Boise State, Tulsa and Utah are great teams, but in my opinion you have to show that you can win with the big boys to become a Head Coach.  Urban did it, but he went from a Utah Head Coach to Florida.  Not from an OC position to a head man.

Let me know your thoughts…

My thought is ...

make Tubs AD and university prez … then let’s find an OC and do some recruiting!

Shoot … duh … my bad … you’re right … go ahead and have the gov and trustees report to him too!

Jacobs is a major problem. I still believe he was the key reason Muschamp left. As long as he is around, we can talk and talk (kinda like him and Tubs) and nothing for the long term good of the program will be accomplished.

Ever wonder why God painted a beautiful sky blue and a breathtaking sunset orange?

Absolutely

I’ve thought for some time now that Tubs would make a great AD. Better AD than coach, Eventhough i think he is a good coach. Its something about his style and integrity thats makes this idea plausable to me. Never really liked Jacobs as the AD. He is too deep in Lowder’s hip pocket for my taste. A “yes man” for the board. Something that Tuberville would not be.

I don't disagree that Tuberville would make a very good A.D.....

but lets get back to reality. There is a reason Jay Jacobs is the A.D. and until the BOT has a complete house cleaning that reason still exists. Tuberville has a better chance of becoming the govenor at this point.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Now Todd

See your screwing with our dream. Can’t i have a dream? Hell even Martin Luther King had one and look how far we’ve come because of It. Of course everyone knows that what we’re saying isn’t reality but its always nice to look ahead and hope for what could be a beautiful marriage.

by Paratiger on Dec 3, 2008 10:06 AM CST up reply actions

Sorry dude I try to live in the present as much as possible....

and if Tuberville doesn’t survive this he never comes back to AU for any reason other than as an opposing coach.

Yeah

Your right about that.

by Paratiger on Dec 3, 2008 10:11 AM CST up reply actions

And...

Your right there is a reason that Jacobs is the AD. Its because he will do what the Board wants him to do. Whether or not thats in the best interest of Auburn is sometimes debatable, Jacobs will never debate that with the Board. In my mind thats a problem.

Jacobs

I agree about Jacobs! He IS the problem! I’ve been saying that for years!

What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended u.a.t.).

I don't know much about Ludwig...

Except that the Oregon fans aren’t real big on him.
I think they would all say Chip Kelly > Gary Crowton > Ludwig.

Houston Nutt got Houston Nutt fired, not Malzahn. Nutt is a moron. One stat sums up his ability to build a program.
2007 Recruiting Rankings:
Ole Miss (With Orgeron coming off of a losing season) – 27th
Ark (With Nutt coming off of an SEC CG appearance) – 31st
Miss St. (With Croom coming off of a losing season) – 39th
2009 Recruiting Rankings (So far):
Arkansas (With Petrino, who has the credibility of a crack whore, and having a horrible season) – 15th
Miss St. (With Croom coming off of a bowl victory and with Orgeron out of the way, and having a horrible season) – 21st
Ole Miss (With Nutt having Ole MIss’s best season since 2003) – 58th

I wouldn’t pin Arkansas’ problems on Malzahn. Nutt couldn’t recruit a frat boy to the playboy mansion and will turn Ole MIss into a bottom feeder again. As an LSU fan, Malzahn would be who I wouldn’t want to see at Auburn.

Nutt recruited McFadden and Jones to Arkansas. Two first round picks.

Chuck Long, Chuck Long, Chuck Long.....

Do your research a little better….Chuck Long is going to stay where he is? Chuck Long has been fired as Head Coach of San diego State at the end of 2008. Chuck Long will take a Head Coaching Position somewhere……OK where do you go after being fired from San Diego State? Folsom Prison squad? The man is more than available and he is very qualified for an SEC OC. Malzahn is an unknown quantity….its one thing to put up gaudy numbers at a Tulsa (see current Louisville head coach and former Tulsa Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe) but it is entirely another matter to do it in a BCS conference much less a defensive juggernaut like the SEC. Chuck Long is our best hope.

Hmmm....

How did that Chuck Long info slip by me… Guess I need to check the facts more on him. Sorry for the confusion, and thanks for the correction.

Chuck Long...

I do think that he will end up as a head coach somewhere. Which I also said in my piece. I did know that he was SDSU head coach, but I guess I neglected to remember that he was fired. :)

Again after losing miserably at SDSU....

where does one goe to get a HC job in D1A? Greg Robinson at Syracuse has a better record and he doesn’t stand a chance in hell of going straight to another HC job. What D1A school is gonna say gee he went 4-8, and 2-10 the past two season but what the hell lets give him a try. He did a stellar job at OU as OC but he has failed miserably as a HC and he will have to rectify himself as OC for a few years before he gets another shot. which also makes him desirable as a OC……we can hold onto him easier for a few seasons.

by Todd92 on Dec 3, 2008 9:47 AM CST up reply actions

Holding on to him for a few seasons is diffinitely music to my ears.

Especially considering the length of time that most of our other OC’s have been able to stay. Although i suppose that wasn’t because they were hired away due to their outstanding job. It was because they were fired due to their lack of performance (all except Pertrino). It would be nice to find an OC in the same mold as our DC’s. Over the years Tubs has found good DC’s. So its time to find us that kinda quality on the offensive side of the ball. Hell its past time.

Chip Kelly was my number one choice

Until they announced he’s the HC-in-waiting at Oregon. How much water does that title hold, by the way? Could he easily opt out of it? Is it just a resume-padder?

Now that he’s seemingly out of the picture, I’d go for Long.

Get Ready

for some Bammers to come over here and trash talk. I couldn’t help myself. I read their post Iron Bowl thread about how dominate they were in all aspects of football; recruiting, coaching, offense, defense, ect. and I made the point that if they were really that dominate, why was the score only 36-0 (not that a goose egg is anything to be proud of) and not 77-0 (like Oklahoma did to Texas A&M in 2003).

You don't really want to start an argument like that...

… do you? Your team scored zero points. Not trying to antagonize, it doesn’t affect me either way… but just sayin’. Probably best to lay low for awhile.
