Auburn Chooses Another Direction

Tubs_5_medium
After 10 seasons, Tuberville is out at Auburn.

Update: 8:30 p.m. CT - The shakeout continues tonight following today's firing of Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. The decision to fire Tuberville apparently happened so quick that the former coach had little time to notify his assistants of the decision. Eddie Gran is believed to be the only coach in town tonight.

According to Steve Ensminger's wife, her husband was actually sitting in top quarterback prospect Raymond Cotton's Maryland home when he got the word. Cotton's father later told Phillip Marshall that his son is no longer committed to the Tigers.

Amy Ensminger told Inside the Auburn Tigers Radio this afternoon that, "she was afraid that some Auburn people aren't going to be happy until the Tigers start recruiting like Nick Saban does at Alabama by putting money into the hands of recruits."

Needless to say, this isn't a red banner day for Auburn Athletics.

Auburn will owe Tuberville "only" $5.1 million as part of his buyout. The clause in the contract calls for the severance to be prorated. University officials will need the extra cash because they now must pay defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads the rest of his $305,000 salary for this year and pay him for next season as well. They also must continue to pay former offensive coordinator Tony Franklin his $289,000 annual salary through the end of next season. The remaining assistants will be paid through next June.

Update: 7:05 p.m. CT - Former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville had what was described as an emotional meeting with his players tonight at the Auburn Athletic Complex. Neither Tuberville or the players were available for comment. Athletic Director Jay Jacobs will hold a press conference tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. CT that will be closed to the public. Here's the press release from the University tonight...

Tommy Tuberville is resigning as head football coach at Auburn, announced Athletics Director Jay Jacobs, Wednesday. Tuberville has served as the program's head coach the last 10 seasons.

"The last 10 years have been a great time in my life, both professionally and personally," Tuberville said. "It's been a great place to coach and live, and we've had a lot of success along
the way. I'm going to remain in
Auburn and help the Auburn family however I can. I'm very appreciative of the coaches, players, staff and Auburn fans over the last decade."

In 10 years at Auburn, Tuberville posted an 85-40 record and a 51-29 mark in Southeastern Conference play. Tuberville directed the program to eight winning seasons, including a perfect 13-0 mark in 2004.

"Tommy and I have had the opportunity to discuss the direction of the program," Jacobs said. "Through those discussions, Tommy felt it would be in his and the program's best interest to step aside as Auburn's head football coach."

"We appreciate everything Tommy has done for this program, this university and the Auburn community over the last 10 years," Jacobs said. "He has established a strong foundation to build upon and we thank him for the standard he set. We wish Tommy and his family--wife Suzanne, and sons Tucker and Troy--nothing but the best."

The buyout portion of Tuberville's contract will be fulfilled, from which no state or university funds will be used. All assistant and contractual staff will be paid according to their respective contracts.

"I will begin the search immediately for Auburn's next head football coach," Jacobs said. "We will move as quickly and efficiently as we possibly can, but we're going to be thorough and strategic with our search to find the best fit for Auburn."

A press conference with Athletics Director Jay Jacobs will be held at 11 a.m. CT in the Athletic Complex Auditorium on Thursday. The press conference will be closed to the public.

Who will our..

Not Scary - Exciting!

I am thrilled. Change is always more exciting than more of the same.

If USC changed from Pete Carroll to Greg Robinson

How exciting would that be for USC fans?

I would like to see a call to Dennis Green...yes that Dennis Green

Dennis hasn’t been Super (Bowl) successful in the NFL but he did have a lot of success with Stanford, the Vikings and kicked the Red birds in the right direction before getting tossed. What a GREAT message to our recruits and potential recruits to go with an African American coach and one that would command and demand their respect. Lets get real, a good Black coach would get us recruits we would never get a sniff of otherwise. We would also be media darlings for going in that direction. We need that added benefit going up against SATAN.
Besides when it comes to Auburn football …“THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!!” the Auburn Tigers!! War Eagle!!!

My list of preferred new head coaches, in order

1. Butch Davis
2. Brian Kelly
3. Turner Gill
4. Charlie Strong
5. Bobby Petrino (OK, not really, but I figured I needed a fifth)

War Damn Eagle!

by PowerOfDixieland on Dec 3, 2008 5:04 PM CST reply actions

I'd bet two things...

1. The new head coach is already lined up.
2. It will not be anyone we expect.

by atlWDE on Dec 3, 2008 5:07 PM CST up reply actions

Wow. I didn't expect this shoe to be on the other foot quite this quickly.

FWIW, I don’t think Butch Davis is going anywhere (but you already knew that, I’m sure, as you called this a wish-list). The same seems to apply to Kelly, though he’d be fun to have in the SEC. I could see Gill or Strong – especially Strong. Somehow, “Charlie Strong” kinda sounds like an Auburn coach.

I have to admit though; the little imp inside me would love to see Petrino jump out of Arkansas after only 1 year. For one, it’d create a firestorm of comments and speculation. For two, I wouldn’t mind Arkansas seeing their little golden boy leave after the way they treated Nutt. (I’m still just a touch bitter about all that.)

As a bonus name, what about Leach? I don’t see him going anywhere, to be honest, but that would be fun to have him in the SEC.

by Hooper on Dec 3, 2008 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

I don't want to see Leach as our coach

I just don’t think it would work out.

Also, another thing that not many people are mentioning…all of Auburn’s coaches have been southern boys. Jordan, Dye, Bowden (the least southern of the bunch), Tuberville. I don’t know if having a Michigander like Kelly would fly at Auburn like I hope it would.

You know, Nick Saban said a couple of years ago “I will not be the Alabama coach.” Like I said to the poster below. Money talks. If we paid him enough, he’d come. The only thing is, what is enough?

War Damn Eagle!

by PowerOfDixieland on Dec 3, 2008 5:26 PM CST up reply actions

To be honest, I dont see Leach at Auburn either.

But I just can’t imagine Auburn as anything but a bruising, power team. Not saying it couldn’t happen, but that’s my image.

by Hooper on Dec 3, 2008 5:38 PM CST up reply actions

So does your life when it flashes before your eyes.

His family does like it in North Carolina. It might be harder than most to get him to leave because of that whole near-death thing. I don’t know for sure, but I do know it makes the whole thing a lot harder to guess at from our end.

by Hooper on Dec 3, 2008 5:26 PM CST up reply actions

That's true

And, he’s alot older than most people realize (and older than he looks).

War Damn Eagle!

by PowerOfDixieland on Dec 3, 2008 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

True.

The odd thing from our end was that he’s Fulmer’s age, and a lot of people wanted to go younger. It made the Butch Davis talk ring a little funny in the ears.

I disagree....

UT is no better than AU.

by Todd92 on Dec 3, 2008 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

UT is overall a better program than AU

A better overall winning percentage, more SEC titles, more national titles, etc. But over the past 10 or so years, the programs have been pretty even, with Auburn probably being better the last 5-7 years.

Most overhyped coach in the country. When his system works, it works. When other teams figure it out (which isn’t hard) it doesn’t.

by Todd92 on Dec 4, 2008 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

Relax everybody....

It IS a sad day for all Auburn fans that Tubbs is not going to get his chance to turn things around. I am really surprised that this happened, for as critical as I have been about the way he handled the season, I really thought he would be back. I really don’t think it was the intention of Jacobs to fire Tubs if it took this long to make a decision. I can only surmise Tubs was not willing to make the changes on the coaching staff that Jacobs wanted and that led to him being shown the door.

That being said I don’t see a reason for all the handwringing. Who would want to coach at Auburn? Oh, just about any good up and coming coach looking for an opportunity to prove himself in the toughest conference in America. Auburn isn’t the best job out there but its pretty damn good all the same. I don’t understand why everyone thinks this is such a no win situation. Who was Nich Saban before he went to LSU? Les Miles? Mark Richt? Pete Carrol for gosh sakes was considered a shaky choice at USC when he took over. Is Bill Cowher chomping at the bit to come to the Plains? No, but there are several good coaches that would love to be a Tiger.

Mike Leach has said he is interested if the job is open….well it is now.

I just hope they don’t try to hire a glamour coach for the sake of getting a name. We have been awful lucky with our past few hires to get guys who were very successful during their tenure. Whoever they bring in needs to be a strong organizational guy who brings discipline and a strong work ethic to the team, not just a fancy offensive style.

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?

by Col.Angus on Dec 3, 2008 5:30 PM CST reply actions

There is some truth to this that's worth keeping in mind:
Who would want to coach at Auburn? Oh, just about any good up and coming coach looking for an opportunity to prove himself in the toughest conference in America.

At Tennessee, we asked a very similar question and were worried about the answer given here. As it turns out, Kiffin came to Knoxville partly because the expectation is so high and the conference is so difficult. There are coaches out there who want the biggest and best challenge they can find. That’s the kind of guy you’d want in the first place.

by Hooper on Dec 3, 2008 5:37 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with some of what you said Angus....

but I have a feeling that no matter what was on Tubs plan to turn it around it wouldn’t have been good enough or that Jacobs wanted to tie Tubs hands in several ways that would doom his ability to lead the team. I feel he was forced out. I hope to god that we don’t hire Leach……I just don’t have faith he can do it in the SEC…..defense is a necessity. Butch Davis might leave if the University offered up Saban like Dollars and he is not just a sexy hire he is a solid hire. Les Miles is no where near the coach that Tubs is and he is starting his slide…….Pete Carroll was a pretty solid hire even though he hadn’t had the success that was expected of him in the NFL. Bill Cowher might come to the Plains for $4 million a year but I don’t see Jay Jacobs being bright enough to do it. If you fire Tuberville you had better hire something more sure than an up’n’coming candidate. He had better be an improvement and if he’s not Jacobs needs to resign.

by James4au on Dec 4, 2008 7:43 AM CST up reply actions

Me, neither.

Emotion and passion are VERY important in football,…but it needs a little tempering as a head coach. And it doesn’t always translate into being a great head coach. In contrast, Houston Nutt seems to do rather well as a pretty emotional head coach, coaching-wise. Though I believe Muschamp has a great football mind and plenty of passion for the game,…I believe he needs a head coaching stint somewhere else, as Auburn should seek to fill the position with an already proven head coach. Though players love the passion and emotion, too, can you imagine being a player coming off the field and being mauled by the head coach every time you made a great play? I would probably go to the end zone and come up the side just to avoid him. Surely he’ll temper that when he gets a head coaching job somewhere, be it at Auburn, or wherever else,…Texas.

Tommy Tuberville builds men of character. Unlike other schools in the SEC he didn’t recruit thugs and criminals and as a result our team is made up of outstanding young men. Firing of Coach Tubberville

UNBELIEVABLE! Who in their right mind would coach at Auburn after the way Tubberville was treated?!!!! One bad season and he is out! Give me a break! Get ready for several more bad seasons as someone tries to come in and salvage the program after this. The AD and certain AU trustees need a reality check. Tommy Tubberville has done great things at Auburn and would continue to do so. This has been a witch hunt for years. I hope those folks making these decisions are happy. He’ll have a job tonight and that University will be lucky to have him! Other than DABO SWINNEY, I can’t think of one coach that could fill Tubberville’s shoes. God Bless HIM and his family!

by aufansfromcantonga on Dec 3, 2008 6:36 PM CST reply actions

I respect Tubs.

I have defended him most of the year but this is for the best… as long as we don’t have this “is our coach going to stay or go” situation after every year during heavy recruiting periods. Tubberville was just apparently not a guy that the BOT liked and they were bound and determined to fight with him. THAT was not good for the university.

I wish Tubs all the best and I hope he ends up at Clemson loaded up with a ton of talent and some more fire under his ass to succeed. Good luck Tubs.

Auburn Elvis

by AuburnElvis on Dec 3, 2008 6:48 PM CST reply actions

They're up top...

I am sad to see Tommy go but I am a realist, something was very, very wrong with the team and I just didn’t see Tubbs riding this out in the long run. Whether it happened today, next year or two years from now, the cloud of this season was going to hang with him and he was going to have to get to Atlanta to get away from it. As I said in another post, you don’t see many coaches fall from the zenith of their program to mediocrity and then rise back to prominence,…..and the WAY we lost this year just made it so necessary for change, either in assistants or in new head coach, that something had to happen. I really believe Tubs held his ground on his assistants and made Jacobs make the decision to fire him. I think that is why they met for so long, trying to get Tubs to let go of his staff and Tubs would have none of it. Stubborn and gutsy but that is typical Tuberville and I can’t blame him for that. If the intention was to force Tubs out and fire him from the get go I think it would have been a very short meeting, what purpose would there be to drawing that out if their minds were made up beforehand.

Now that being said, I really think we can recover in a hurry if we get the right coach. A new attitude and a fresh slate for everybody is usually very invigorating for young men and if we get the right guy we might see some of that great talent flourish that we’ve supposedly recruited the last two years.

And as far as recruits are concerned, we may lose some but we’ll get our share, but we’ve been recruiting well for years and you’d swear by our performance this year the cupboard was bare. Lee Ziemba was supposed to be the second coming of John Hannah and he sure laid an egg this year. Whats important is getting a coach who can reach young men and get them to fulfill their potential and hopefully exceed it.

I remember when Dye left how upset everybody was that we kicked out a legend who got us back to respectability and beat Alabama. Terry Bowden came in and promptly won 20 games in a row. Bowden went to the SEC title game the year before he was fired/resigned and we brought in Tubs who had us in the SEC game in 2000. Look I know everyone is sad and feeling bad for Tubs, but life goes on, he’s getting $6 Mil and Auburn is getting a new direction. We’ll be alright if we hire the right guy, someone with good ideas and believes in discipline and responsibility. Someone wants that opportunity and wants to be a part of the Auburn family and will make us proud.

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?

by Col.Angus on Dec 3, 2008 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Word is "resigned"

I mean, if they are honoring a $6,00,000 buyout, one has to think there is at the least a mutual parting, at most a shove out the door.

This year sucked, but unless you can do something miraculous (Bill Cowher, someone surprising in a good way…) you’re just rolling dice. Mike Leach is having his best year. He’s had some rough ones prior to this. Not to say he couldn’t do a great job, but I’d take Tubs past over just about anyone else out there on the lists I’ve seen.

Good luck with the hire. I’m now kind of wishing that our administration hadn’t been in such a hurry to name a coach, as I would be thrilled to have Tuberville in Manhattan. Alas, our administration is incompetent right now, thus the only thing we get that even resembles a “coaching search” is our good ol’ boy admins calling up Bill Snyder and begging him to come back.

We've been on the decline for the past 5 years

2004: 13-0 (8-0 SEC)
2005: 9-3 (7-1 SEC)
2006: 11-2 (6-2 SEC)
2007: 9-4 (5-3 SEC)
2008: 5-7 (2-6 SEC)

Pretty disturbing trend, no?

You're argument is flawed POD....

AU’s down turn doesn’t necessarily point to a down turn from AU as much as it does an upturn from the rest of the SEC. The SEC became a juggernaut after 2004 (I’m not saying they were’nt already the best conference). I mean hell last years NC who we took to the wire was a two loss SEC team. You should’nt try to make that argument……especially not now with this travesty taking place.

In response to Power of Dixieland, I understand that there was some decline in there, but is there really anywhere to go other than down after 13-0? I would happily live with one bad year every five years if my team was that good in the other four. Alas, those are merely my expectations for my program, and should in no way reflect on what fans of other programs expect for theirs.

In the years 2006-2007, we won nearly every close game we played. Neither of those teams were as good as their records indicate. This year, we lost most of those close games. Our record was more indicitave of the level of our play. Our 2004 squad was awesome. 2005 was pretty damn good. 2006 was mediocre. 2007 wasn’t that great, but decent. 2008 was awful. I have spent the better part of my life loving Auburn. My father is a grad, and i spent two years there, before the cost of out of state tuition sent me back to oklahoma. It saddens me that Auburn, and my surrogate school, o-state, are now more concerned with money and football than they are with treating people right. Jay enjoys using the CEO analogy, well 9 good years earns you one bad year. Here’s a stat everyone forgets: 85 wins to 40 losses, and a 5-3 record in bowl games. Just because he wanted to be better than a perennial 9-3 team and tried to break things up with a new offense – he now gets canned. Boo to the Auburn leadership team. The basketball and baseball teams have not been good either lately. I doubt they can land a Tier One coach on the plains now. Best of luck, Tommy. I hope Starkville treats you better than Auburn.

My take is, Tuberville really took his hands of the wheel of this program the last few years. If you’re Pete Carroll and do that you lose a game or two and still go to the Rose Bowl. If you’re Bob Stoops, you win your conference and just get embarrassed in a BCS bowl. In the SEC, they have you for lunch. The way Alabama just did.

Amy Ensminger told Inside the Auburn Tigers Radio this afternoon that, “she was afraid that some Auburn people aren’t going to be happy until the Tigers start recruiting like Nick Saban does at Alabama by putting money into the hands of recruits.”

Is she publicly accusing Saban of recruiting players with money? I hope Saban’s attorney gets a hold of that statement and sues her blind. I can’t believe she would be dumb enough to defame a public figure on a radio show.

What more do you expect?

Aubarn has a history of playing “catch-up” by having to pay players just to lure them into coming to Opelika (Shug Jordan, Pat Dye, and even having to change grades in order to keep players eligible). I take it she believes Urban Meyer and Les Miles are also paying players as well? That’s the best retaliation for the opposition on the losing end. I bet she also said Saban paid the refs in last Saturday’s Iron Bowl too, didn’t she?

I’m sure Dave Radar’s wife said the same thing about other coaches seeing how Shula was unable to compete with the Les Miles and Urban Meyers of the SEC. It comes with the territory.

Hey, $6 million isn’t chump change. Maybe he just wanted the money and retire and take life easy. MOST people would be VERY comfortable with that amount! Yes, he has been a great coach for AU. BUT, what has he done for us lately? Hello! We’ve gone steadily downhill since 2004. Problem is who will replace him. Don’t know. BUT, don’t think he had it in his heart to bring us back. Just my opinion. More I think about it, more I think he wanted to be fired/forced to resign. Oh, the article I read said that neither state or University funds would be used for his “buyout”. Hmmmm., wonder what deep pockets are responsible for that. This is supposedly from the new conference:
“The buyout portion of Tuberville’s contract will be fulfilled, from which no state or university funds will be used. All assistant and contractual staff will be paid according to their respective contracts.”

Oh well, may be the same sources would like to bailout GM, Ford and Chrysler!

by Acid Reign on Dec 4, 2008 12:41 AM CST reply actions

it probably wouldn't feel that bad

b/c auburn would be putting up 63 points.

i can’t believe how much anti-leach sentiment i’m hearing over here. i don’t even think there is a snowball’s chance he’s leaving lubbock, but what part of going 11-1 in one of the hardest divisions i’ve ever seen in my life, and doing so as the third fiddle in your own state (not to mention oklahoma) don’t you like?? the dude is averaging 8.4 wins a year over 9 years in a division with ou and texas, and doing so with mainly “leftover” recruits and is only now starting to get the occasional michael crabtree. as a bama fan i would be terrified of leach at auburn.

by gerry dorsey on Dec 4, 2008 5:50 AM CST up reply actions

He will leave Lubbock....

because Texas Tech is a program that will always be as you say “third fiddle” really 5th or 6th fiddle at best when you consider Oklahoma, Mizzou, Nebraska (regardless of their current status they will be back) Texas Tech is like South Carolina and as much as I like South Carolina they are a big school that can never get it done…..no conference championships much less national championships. Mike Leach will leave Lubbock I just hope he doesnt come to AU (pirate loving weirdo).

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Dec 4, 2008 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

all fairly valid points...

but all you did was solidify my point. leach has done more with less than almost anyone in the country. despite a huge number of recruiting disadvantages (ever been to lubbock?? ever seen their facilities??) and therefore less talent that his competition, he has averaged 8.5 wins a year (the same number as tubby by the way) over 9 years. the 9 years before leach arrived tech averaged 5.8 wins a year. they don’t have any conference or national championships b/c tech was a desolate wasteland when he got there. not only that but they were running the ball 45 times a game. it takes time to do what he’s done and he’s done it well. hell i can only hope the powers that be at auburn feel the same as you and avoid getting a coach that has already been successful as a head coach at the bcs level. go get a small time head coach or overpaid assistant and roll the dice.

and by the way, south carolina has never averaged 8.5 wins a year for any amount of time in its life.

i was just responding

to the comment that tt was 5th or 6th fiddle. if they are winning that many games with 5th or 6th fiddle talent as todd claims, then leach must be doing something right. yet it appears that many auburn fans don’t want him. in regards to crabtree and harrell, those are his two biggest recruits in 9 years. its not like he has a roster full of those kind of guys.

to the me if you want to hear the ultimate compliment to mike leach ask a texas, texas a&m, oklahoma, etc fan how they’d feel if leach left the conference. they would be doing freakin’ back flips.

by gerry dorsey on Dec 4, 2008 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

No one is debating the efficiency of his offense when it is clicking....

and there isn’t a defense on the other side of the ball. But he is more the flavor of the the month this year than a proven top tier head coach. I believe a decent not great Bama Team under Shula showed what a typical day in the SEC would be like for TT in the Cotton Bowl a few years back and most of his success before this year was when the Big 12 was a two horse conference……OU and UT were pretty much it year in and year out……and I expect that TT will fall back into its place regardless of whether the flakey pirate stays or goes.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Dec 4, 2008 1:10 PM CST up reply actions

Harrell was the third best QB recruit in the state his senior season

if that. The top two QBs were Rhett Bomar (famous for the Big Red car dealership scandal at OU) and Stephen McGee (Texas A&M). texas went after Bomar, so if Harrell wanted to stay in state, his only real choice for a Big 12 school was Tech. Leach’s offense has put up ridiculous numbers with walk-ons like Sonny Cumbie at the helm, though, so it isn’t so much talent as it is the system. Leach is very, very good at finding QBs woh can be successful in his system.

As for Michael Crabtree, calling him a top recruit is laughable. Crabtree was a 3-start recruit as an ‘athlete’ after playing QB in a wing-T offense his senior year at a Dallas high school. Leach did a good job in identifying him as someone who could be successful in his offense, and putting him in the right position to succeed.

Tech rarely, if ever, gets top recruits, simply because of the demographics of the Big 12. Consider that of the 8 non-Texas schools in the Big 12, 6 of them have more Texans on their football roster than they do kids from their home state. Tech is fighting Oklahoma State, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, and Baylor for those “third-choice” recruits, not to mention all of the other out-of-state schools that recruit Texas hard.

To state that Tech’s success is the result of recruiting great talent to Lubbock is to show that you aren’t paying attention to what is really going on in Leach’s program.

Just as Tech’s “high-octane” offense ran wonders on Alabama in the ’05 Cotton Bowl, OU ran the score up on LSU in the ’03 national championship, etc.

Last year’s Arkansas team did not meet expectations, and Houston Nutt didn’t even coach the bowl game. Missouri deserved better than the Cotton Bowl, and Arkansas didn’t deserve a bowl as good as the Cotton Bowl. It was a mismatch from the start, before you add in that the players just mailed it in with their coach in Oxford.

I remember when Florida hired Urban Meyer

And die-hard SEC fans were convinced that his spread offense could not work against their vaunted defenses. Well, a National Title and a couple of SEC titles later, I think its safe to say that a spread offense can be very successful in the SEC. I watched several Auburn games this year, and the one thing I couldn’t believe was how horrendous your quarterback play was. I couldn’t believe that a program with as much history and tradition as Auburn couldn’t do better at the most important position on the field.

If you guys want a guy who can implement a successful spread offense and develop talent at the offensive skill positions, Mike Leach is the way to go. As a Texas fan, I’ll say that every season I hate playing Texas Tech. The guy is a great coach that has never been able to get enough talent in Lubbock to become a dominant program. That isn’t a knock on his recruiting, it’s a knock on Lubbock. That program has a ceiling, and Leach has hit it. At Auburn, I feel that he would be incredibly successful. You guys would suffer for one year, as he put in his system, but he would have you guys in contention in his second year.

I can’t believe how much some people on here seem to dislike him and feel that his offensive success is some kind of fluke because Big 12 defenses aren’t that great. Look at Florida. How many times did they hang 50+ on an SEC team this year? To say Leach’s offense won’t succeed in the SEC because of one poor showing in a Cotton Bowl is ridiculous. His offense has finished in the Top 6 in the nation in total offense every year for 9 straight years and he has done it against some stellar defenses (Nebraska before the collapse, OU, Texas, etc.).
