My question about Tubs' dismissal.

With Tubs gone now and likely all the assistants, what happens with Paul Rhodes?  Is he actually under contract with Tubs or does he have a seperate contract with the University?  If he is staying we have a solid DC that should be able to do better if we get a good offensive minded HC that can keep the defense fresh.

Do we really think that Leach would be a good fit at Auburn?  Do we really want to go down this road of pass heavy offense?  Would Kevin Wilson or Brent Venables be able to be pulled away from OU?  I don't think that Muschamp could be pulled back into this situation now that he has in-depth knowledge of the goings on of Auburn.

I'm pretty sure Rhoads is out

I wasn’t that impressed to be honest. The D started the season like gangbusters, but against the likes of ULM, USM, MSU, and UT. Once we played better offenses, we started sucking on defense.

Once again.....

what are you thinking……our defense despite being injury laden held on in most every game and all while spending enormous minutes on the field…..or have you forgotten why we sucked this year?

I'll say it again

Look at Tennessee’s defense. No more talented than ours. Had to be on the field the whole game like ours. Finished FOURTH IN THE NATION in total defense. Stop making excuses. Charles Scott ran for 100+ yards on our defense, for crying out loud.

Not making excuses....just stating facts.

You forget that we couldn’t even put in a nickel package for a couple of games this season. I don’t give a crap what Tennessee was able to do. Charles Scott was a beast that was held to next to nothing until the fourth quarter and got big yards on few carries after our offense couldn’t keep our defense off the field. If you want to compare apples to apples look at what both defenses did when they were both healthy.

Have no idea,

but since the performance of the D wasn’t really the issue this season, and he is a great coach. My guess is that he will stay. Jimbo Fisher stayed at LSU during the Saban/Miles transistion (of course those circumstances were much different). sorry still in a bit of a shock about the whole thing.

Hey POD, any defense that is required to be on the field for the bulk of the 60 minutes, amidst injuries, would also look pretty shitty as the season wore on. Although, there were many many missed tackles…..

If he is out, and Sly Croom does not want another HC job, we should get him.

I agree

But Tennessee’s defense had the same kind of offensive offense to work with, and they were #4 in the country in total defense.

I am afraid that our offense contributed to UT's defensive stats greatly.....

I don't think that they

had the laundry list of injuries. Who was our conditioning coach again???

I knew that...

I knew that Muschamp couldn’t be swayed to return, unless of course the Board was cleaned out and Jacobs was gone.

by Mattco on Dec 3, 2008 8:09 PM CST up reply actions

Good point Mattco...

Along these lines and to Auburn’s disadvantage, it’s now a well known fact that whoever comes in to replace Tuberville will be subject to the whims of the Board and Jacobs. A lot of money will make a lot of people do a lot of things they might not otherwise do (e.g., take a job in which you know a governing body will control you completely), so getting a replacement for Tuberville is still doable, despite the shackles (i.e., BOT and Jacobs) they’ll be working “under”. Of course, whoever they decide to hire will be hand picked at the time and at the onset considered to be compliant with their whims and desires,…but over time,…all bets may be off,…IF they fall out of favor for whatever reason(s) with the BOT and Jacobs.

Auburn must pay Rhoads his salary through the end of next season...

He’s almost certainly finished coaching at Auburn.

no doubt!!!

We beat Vandy and Arkansas, we just pissed about going to Shreeveport instead of talking about finding a new coach.

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?

by Col.Angus on Dec 3, 2008 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

Its up to the new coach who stays and goes...

If the new coach is an offensive guy, I would suspect Rhoads woud be given the opportunity to stay. Whether he wants to or not remains to be seen.

I hope we didn’t offer that puffed up windbag Muschamp the job. He is not ready to be a head coach at the major college level. He is too immature to handle all the responsibility. He never impressed me when he was with us and besides its not like Texas is shutting teams down.

The word on the streets

is that they talked to Muschamp and Muschamp said no….something like that. I don’t think that he is ready to be head coach, but I have missed his fire on the side lines this season.

Word is

Muschamp said he would never come back to Auburn as long as Jacobs was the AD.

Anybody but Petrino

Why would anyone want Petrino!! The crap he pulled with Louisville, and the Falcons should show anybody what kind of GARBAGE he is!!!!!! If Jacobs, and Gogue decide to hire him , we will spend many seasons in the crapper!!!!!!For GODS sakes , LEAVE THE SNAKE UNDER THE ROCK WHERE HE BELONGS!!!!! He is only in it for himself. Now , true enough , in todays age there is alot of that going on. People are definately looking for their paycheck , but we need someone who will be dedicated to the program , not their pocketbook.

Coordinators are on contract to the school not the coach.

Auburn will let the new HC decide whether or not to keep Rhodes.

Miles chose to keep Jimbo when he arrived, so Jimbo stayed.

by LSU Jonno on Dec 3, 2008 9:54 PM CST reply actions

so now...

How does that work? if the new HC chooses not to keep him, then Auburn is under contract to pay his buyout too?

What the news folks are saying

Fox 6 in Bham are repeating reports that Tuberville admitted burnout, pressure from his wife to retire, and that he was not willing to break in a new set of assistant coaches during his meetings with Jay Jacobs…if this is true this is just a situation where Tubs has lost the fire, lost the desire…he wanted to be the CEO, pulling the strings and letting his trusted assistant run things…but when things started going south, he was unwilling to make changes. I’ve surprisingly heard through an old high school buddy with family connections to Al Borges that Tuberville did not let Borges run the offense the way he wanted to during his time at Auburn, that he was constantly overruled. He told me that Franklin actually phoned Borges after his firing to vent about a similar situation during Franklins short tenure…Tubs must have some type of “control” issue with the offensive side of the ball…doesn’t make sense.

by tigerpaw75 on Dec 3, 2008 10:09 PM CST reply actions

I don't know...

That sounds like crap to me. Why would Tub’s, Who knows very little about the offensive side of the ball, overrule his coordinator on a regular basis. Especially considering the troubles we’ve had on that side of the ball. Losing fire or not, That just doesn’t make sense to me. Sounds like an excuse that the AD and BOT’s drummed up for the public.

As far as losing fire and pressure from his wife, well that could be true i suppose. But if thats true then why would he accept an extension on his contract? Through 2013 none the less. Sorry but there isn’t much there that makes me believe that those things were the case here. i suppose i’ve been wrong before, But the evidence doesn’t really point that way.

I still think that Gogue should grow some balls and fire Jacobs immediately and try to hire Tub’s as the AD while there is still a chance of him staying in Auburn. I’m sure that Tub’s could run alot better Dept. than Jacob’s ever could. I think that Tub’s was built to be an AD.

Look at Tubs' demeanor most of the year...it fits the pattern

Granted, there were a lot of big money guys (Lowder, Rane, etc.) who wanted Tubs gone. But it was the multiple performances this year where the team looked very poorly coached. I think fans could have accepted a down year if they had seen a glimmer of improvement, or at least some solid fundamentals during the games. The players looked confused or unmovtivated at various times during the year. That is a reflection of the staff turmoil and Tuberville’s inability to deal with it due to his diminished energy and passion for the job. I believe the Tuberville of 2000 would have dealt with it…but has just looked depressed and tired instead of cool, calm and confident.

On the Borges/Franklin offensive control thing, my friend has no reason to distort what Uncle Al told him…perhaps there are some sour grapes there…but it fits right in with what we’ve seen publicly. We all know Tuberville’s penchant for “playing it safe” the last few years…it hasn’t cost many wins at the time, but I think the boring play has failed to attract offensive skill players and added to the fans frustrations over the years…we haven’t beaten a mid to top level SEC team (someone other than Vandy, Miss. St. Ole Miss, Kentucky) by more than 10 points since 2005, when we beat South Carolina 48-7 and Arkansas 34-17…that points to how far the offense has fallen over the last 3-4 years.

Bottom line is Jacobs and Gogue told Tubby, we want you to make the staff changes necessary to get our offense going and improve recruiting. And Tubs wasn’t willing to do it, for whatever reason. So I’m glad they came to an agreement.

by tigerpaw75 on Dec 4, 2008 1:36 PM CST up reply actions

You are naive to think that Tuberville was shown the door because of.....

the offensive staff. And Gogue wasn’t present after Monday morning he showed his ineffectiveness by not being there. The fans as you should be able to see wanted Tubs back. I have not spoken to a single fellow Alumni that is happy with this and didn’t want him back….other than the few posters on here that were of that opinion…..The bottom line is Jacobs and Gogue are yes men for Lowder and your little school girl informant story doesn’t hold water. FIRE JAY JACOBS!

I have heard the same story..

I just didn’t want to get fileted if I suggested that Tubby really didn’t want to be at Auburn anymore. Look, the guy has two young kids that he doesn’t see much during the season and then you have to deal with all the back biting from the AD and boosters. Not something most guys would have the patience to deal with when he has been as successful as he has. Those meetings were too long just to fire the guy. That just not how it works and I’m sure they wanted to find a way to keep around but it sounds like Tubs didn’t want any part of their proposals.

Really sad, but when you have been at one place for 10+ years it wears on you. You have more responsiblity and more pressure to succeed because you are the man that runs the show. Its tough and requires more than some folks are willing to commit. I can’t imagine being in that position with my kids and I’ve turned down jobs that paid more so that I won’t be away from home. Makes me respect Tubs all the more.

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?

by Col.Angus on Dec 4, 2008 9:38 AM CST up reply actions

Thats what was scripted.....

Tuberville was ready to go forward. Nothing he could come up with would have ever satisfied the powers that be. This was there chance to get control of the football program once again and they took it. don’t be so naive.
