Gogue and Jacobs Not Up To Task At Hand
Sometimes even when you see it coming it's still shocking. So was the feeling Monday when the other shoe finally dropped on Tommy Tuberville. In a week where Auburn President Jay Gogue and Athletic Director Jay Jacobs exposed themselves as incompetent lightweights to everyone in the college football world, the announcement of Tuberville's departure felt surreal despite all the warning signs.
Only at Auburn could two men so mishandle a situation and embarrass its fans and alumni the way they have and still retain their jobs. Three days of meetings? Talk about indecisive. What were they thinking? As one reader commented yesterday, maybe they should replace Jacobs with Tuberville.
Jacobs's ineptness throughout his tenure is now showing top to bottom across Auburn's revenue sports. Gogue's first big test on the national stage has been a total failure. He would be wise to study the failings of former school president William Walker.
Hiding inside your office is no way to demonstrate leadership. Gogue has not been seen or heard throughout the entire process. Bin Laden has nothing on this guy. He knows how to cut and run. The lack of Auburn leadership is profound.
Regardless of how you feel about Tuberville's fate, as Auburn people we should all be deeply concerned not only about the direction of the athletic department, but the University in general. Wholesale changes need to be made quickly.
Jacobs press conference this morning should give Jerry Springer a run for his money. It will be interesting to see how he explains this week's debacle. What are the chances that Gogue attends? Where's James Martin when you need him?
Most fans seem to have little faith today that Jacobs can conduct a successful search for a new head coach. The Birmingham News reported yesterday that school officials had contacted Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino and Texas Tech coach Mike Leach to gauge interest. If this doesn't induce nausea immediately, then you don't have a pulse.
Can Auburn officials be so brazen as to go after Petrino despite everything that has happened? Without mentioning Jet Gate, have they forgotten how he treated his team in Atlanta last season? Is this what we want representing our University. Bobby Petrino? The most hated coach in all of football? Are you kidding me? If the reports are accurate, this is truly a disturbing move. Thankfully, because of his contract, there's no way he can leave Fayetteville.
Like the economy, things are likely to get worse before they start getting better. Fasten your seatbelts, the holiday season promises to be stormy. Let's hope that Tuberville is not the only casualty this month.

not our fault
i’m tired of being looped into to the stupidity of the decisions made for both our university and the athletic department. sir ivan from espn seems to point the finger of blame on the entire auburn nation. i have yet to find an alum that wanted tubs fired. i have yet to find a fan that wanted tubs fired. i’m sure they are out there. we are not philly fans. we don’t boo our players and coaches when things go stray. we are not bama fans and run out a coach when he can’t win a title every other year. (alabama over florida-alabama looses to oklahoma for nat. title) all parties are slightly to blame, some more than others. but, don’t blame me, i am a school teacher, not a bank exec.

Disgusted
Below is the text from an e-mail exchange yesterday with the president of my beloved university….the answer says it all. BTW this same message was sent to Mr. Jacobs.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. We will pass
your note along to the Athletics Director where recommendations
regarding Athletics originate. We appreciate your interest and support

I do not understand how we can let someone twist in the wind such as
we have let Tommy Tuberville.
Why would he want to coach for us?
Tell the man he is good for next year and that he had better improve.
End of statement end of speculation…end of media garbage.
When you state this – The recruits understand…the coaches
understand…the media understands…the football donations
understand…the public understands.
You guys are insulting our university by not acting…and telling
everybody he will stay.
Dont give the excuses that you are leveraging contracts or bettering
your bargaining position….you are losing in the eyes of the public
and in the eyes of future recruits.

Amen
… well said Jay.
Jacobs AND Gogue should both be immediately relieved of their responsibilities. The injustice and shame they have collectively brought upon the University is a travesty unlike any other I’ve witnessed in over 30 years of being associated with Auburn.
Furthermore, if the rumors are true regarding a trustee approaching either Leach or Petrino, the governor should immediately excuse them as well. Such meddling, if it’s occurring, must be terminated quickly and decisively. It is critical society and the college football world understand that is not the way we operate at Auburn.

E-Mail Addresses??
Thanks longtimeaufan for the thought … Does anyone have a link to the email addresses for Gogue, the governor, and the BOT? I’m thinking quick email campaign might be helpful.

Great post, Jay.
It’s seemingly apparent Jacobs and Gogue are simply a couple of figureheads, puppets, or even stooges, if you will,…in the operation of Auburn athletics. They both will not stand on their own to exhibit the true leadership Auburn needs,…when Auburn needs it,…and will only do the will of “those” in power. In reading some of Jacob’s comments in the past where he implied he will always “take the bull by the horns” and do whatever is necessary to keep Auburn’s athletics on track, even if it means firing a coach,…well,…he now got to prove his “manhood” by putting a big notch in his belt,…running off a head football coach, despite indication’s Tuberville resigned. Resigned is probably exactly right, though. Wouldn’t you like to have been a fly on the wall during the meetings between Jacobs and Tuberville from Monday through Wednesday and see Tuberville’s expressions on his face and be able to get a glimpse into exactly what Tuberville was thinking and thinking of Jacobs as he sat through those meetings. Tuberville probably struggled to make it to just Wednesday where he finally said “I can’t take this anymore,…I’m out,…it ain’t worth it. I give. It’s all yours.” Tuberville knew what he was dealing with going into those meetings having worked with Jacobs in the past, so he probaby had a pretty good idea where things would end up,…particularly with going into the meeting just off a 5-7 season and a drubbing by Alabama. In other words,…no support and out on an island.

Repost: "They finally got their way"...
Speaking of Jay Jacobs, the BOT, and Tuberville possibly being on an island going into the meetings with Gogue and Jacobs, here is some commentary by ESPN College Football Insider, Joe Schad, yesterday regarding Tuberville’s departure from Auburn. Schad met with Tuberville late this season and Tuberville told Schad:
"Not everyone’s going to like me, not everyone’s going to have my back".
Schad went on to say it was obvious that Jay Jacobs and those prominent behind the scenes boosters who had tried to get rid of Tuberville earlier and hire Bobby Petrino, only to see Auburn and Tuberville rebound with a perfect season,…"finally got their way".
Schad went on to say, the powers that be "finally got their leverage",…that one bad year (this season’s 5-7 season) combined with a drubbing by Alabama,…were just what "they" needed to effect the change. Schad went on to say that finally,…after 10 years, they’re going to get their way because they’re ready for a new voice and ready for a new offense.
If any of this is true, it’s as if they were simply waiting in the wings ready for Tuberville to screw up royally to pounce. Based on Tuberville’s comment above, he more than likely knew what he was up against going into the meetings with Gogue and Jacobs,…an uphill battle or a losing cause. Hell,…for that matter,…he probably knew since Jetgate he was a “wanted man” going forward.

"Unofficial" Auburn University Representative?
By the way,…I wonder what an “unofficial” Auburn University Representative is/means that reached out to Mike Leach and Bobby Petrino to gauge interest in the head football coaching position? That sounds like code speak for “Colonial Bank Loan Officer”, who is also a graduate of Auburn University,…:-).

Darn you Jay ...
You didn’t give me a voting option to say B & C. I must say that Gogue has been to shall we say “hands-offish” in this matter especially when looking at Jacobs complete ineptness. Gogue should have taken the bull by the horn and handled this better. But I think it falls in the laps of the BoT and Jacobs the most. There is no way university officials have made contact with anyone without the BoT’s involvement, especially when considering the financial implications that this will cost (i.e. buyout for TT, continuing coaches salaries, search cost, buying out another coach’s contract to bring him here, etc.)
This is a total failure by the AD and a handful of zealot trustees. Now we all get blasted with the media’s broad brush as crazy fans. This is the reason Jacobs and TT should have met last week to clear this up. If TT was unwilling to make any changes, then yes you have to move on. But this has been handled as poorly as possible.

Good Post Jay....
I agree whole heartedly. We as AU alum all sat and wondered what kind of President Gogue would be. Would he be a man and lead AU with integrity? Would he have the balls to stand against the BOT when it is the right thing to do or would he become a non-factor and watch from a cracked door scared to do what is right? Well the past few days have certainly revealed the answer. We have another peson in charge that is an underling to Lowder. When I look for someone to blame I see the BOT, Jay Jacobs and Jay Gogue. Once again AU and its representatives (namely its fans and alumni) have been given a black eye and painted unjustly in the media as part of this mess. Somehow we must unite to dispose of the cancer that eats at our University. I hope Colonial Bank fails and Lowder is disgrace once and for all.

College athletics and presidents
I agree with you guys concerning Jay Jacobs, but I completely disagree with your statements about the president. In my opinion, the president of our university should be spending his time making sure that the academics are exceeding expectations. I do not want the president of our university wasting his time with the athletic department. That is the job of Jay Jacobs. If the president has to get involved in the affairs of athletics, then the president needs to find an AD that can handle the job on his own, without the president having to get involved in that garbage.
I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but I am far more concerned with Auburn’s academics having respect, than I am with the athletic department. I doubt that any of us normal people have ever landed a job because of Auburn’s athletics, but hopefully a few of us have been the front runner for a job due to the level of education that we received at Auburn.
These days, the only thing that a collegiate athletic department has in common with their university is the name. Leave the president out of this crap, the only part of his job that he has failed to do is fire Jacobs and make tubby the ad.

Then they should change his title to....
President of Academics at Auburn University rather than University President. If his responsabilities are as you state then you had better tell that to the rest of the nations University presidents because they all assume responsibility for there Atheletic Departments…….who in the hell do you think is responsible for killing a playoff scenario every year. You live in a special place if you don’t realize the presidents responsibility is with the entire University…..especially with the single largest source of revenue on campus.

His current title is just fine
If you think that collegiate athletics is more important than collegiate academics, then it is you that lives in a special place. From
the stand point of academics/professors, this president is very well liked and is doing good things. Yet, you want to fire him because you disagree with a decision regarding athletics. Perhaps you should start paying attention to all of Auburn, instead of just the football program.
while football is the single largest source of revenue, why don’t you comment on how much of that revenue makes it out of the athletic department and gets shared with the rest of the university.
I am aware of how most presidents interject their opinions into the affairs of athletics, and I think that it is ridiculous. I would love to see auburn win a NC more than anybody, but I’m not going to jump on this “bash the president” bandwagon. Also, I did over state my point when I said the prez should not concern himself with athletics, what I should have said is that he should not stress the athletic department anymore than he does any other department.
Your delusional job description for the president is what managers refer to as micro-managing. Which is a problem that our university already has from it’s board of directors and some alumni. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the soap opera.

One last thing...
Your proposed title change is starting to sound pretty good. Another option is to take it one step further and completely seperate universities from their athletic departments. Then we could get the NCAA out of the picture, and just start referring to collegiate football for what it already is; semi-pro football. The athletes could get paid, and the athletes wouldn’t have to burden themselves with attending classes that most don’t want to attend anyway. But alas, it will never happen because of money.

Get off your high horse......
I never gave any such statement saying Atheletics was more important than Academics so get your panties unwadded. But if you have a University President that is willing to be a part of the process then you allow the power hungary boosters to control the thing. You aren’t employed as a professor in the sociology department are you? lol get a grip.

Nope, not employed by au
You implied it by acting like this coaching situation is the most important thing going on at Auburn from the presidents point of view. Not sure why you asked me to get off of my “high horse”, because I didn’t say/suggest anything that would resemble such.
I’ve simply disagreed with your opinion on the prez, and now you’ve resorted to 5th grade insults (panties in a wad).
Face the facts; Lowder and his cronies control our athletic department, and they are willing to fire good presidents if anybody in that position dares to go against them. The best way to prevent those guys from screwing up the entire university as oppose to keeping their damage confined to the AD is to have a president that doesn’t get involved in this crap. Fob James attempted to have Lowder removed from the BOT, and even he couldn’t get it done. So what exactly would the prez be able to achieve by getting involved in this BS other than getting himself fired (which would prevent the rest of the university from having any sort of long term continuity).
by Pwauburn on Dec 7, 2008 4:25 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Ironically.....
Lowder firing Gogue is exactly the kind of thing that would finally get him removed from the BOT. Lowder would have a hard time firing Gogue after such a short time and no transgressions to use as motive. Furthermore, it is the presidents job to be an integral part of the Atheletics Department whether you like it or not. As to the “high horse” remark……you act as if the atheletics are beneath you with your comments. Lest you forget a small percentage of the football players (or any other sport for that matter) actually go pro…….most use the scholarship they recieved and get an education and subsequently a job doing something other than playing sports. The atheletes recieve an education for their ability to play their sport and are not Semi-pro as you put it. Furthermore take away the Football program and watch every other sport fold from lack of funds which sure would screw alot of kids out of their only chance to get an education.
