Hurt, Sickened, Angry, and Ashamed

Is it just me or does Jay Jacobs seem in so far over his head that he does not know which way is up?  Could he botch things worse than he already has?  I guess the answer to the second question is… yes he can.  He has not hired a coach to replace Tuberville yet.

After hearing that Tommy Tuberville would not return to Auburn, the only words I can use to explain my feelings are: hurt, sickened, angry and ashamed.  I am not sure it is because of Tuberville's coaching, as much as what he has done for the program… a program that has done nothing but drag him through the mud.  Granted that program paid him huge money, and that will make him live up to a standard.  It seems to me that Jacobs is the one that did the dragging.  What makes Jacobs qualified to do anything?  Name me one thing that he has done that is good for Auburn.  I guess you can say that he had a role in getting our new Basketball Arena built.  That is a positive.  He was the head man of Tigers Unlimited.  I am sure we all would like to think him for the increase in dues every damn year, and moving us into the Grey, Orange, and Blue seating.  All that did was give me the proverbial finger for my years of loyalty, by making my donation go up to keep my current seats.

What did Jacobs have against Tommy?  Was it the fact that Tuberville was more well liked them him?  Better respected around the league and country?  Was it that Tommy did not put up with Lowder and the other Board of Trustees crap?  I think it is all of the above.  Tuberville would make a great AD, I have said it before, but there is no way that the BOT will get rid of the “yes man” they have in Jay Jacobs.  Did Auburn not just get investigated and barely stay out of trouble for the BOT being too involved in the daily operations of the University?  It seems like we never learn.

I have liked some of the things that Jay Gouge has done.  I think that he is an Auburn Man a heart.  Why he allows Jay Jacobs to stay at Auburn, and continue to turn our Athletic Dept into the laughing stock is beyond me.  Where is the face of Jacobs?  When has he ever put himself out there on anything?  If he was not on the letter I get every year from the Athletic Dept and the Tiger Roar Magazine, I would not know what he looked like.  Auburn let Muschamp go, because Jacobs could not get his contract straight.  We dealt with the Tuberville saga at the end of every damn season, he seems to have a man crush on Bobby Petrino (who in my opinion is a slim ball), and lastly I think he will make a flashy hire this time around that will fail.  The flashy hire just might be Mike Leach.  Whether or not Leach is the right guy, I do not know, but he is the flashy hire and the alumni will not be pleased.  I am angry that Auburn cannot do anything about the ineptitude of our Athletic Director.

I am ashamed at what Auburn has become athletically.  I am tired of having to answer questions about what our BOT and AD are thinking.  As a fan, I have no idea what they are thinking, but I have my opinions.  I think that Auburn fired the wrong guy.  Jacobs should have been the one to go.  Tuberville was a true Auburn man that apparently lost his will to deal with Lowder and Jacbos crap.  I feel sorry for him.  Jacobs should feel sorry for us as the fans.  We are the ones that are having to attempt to explain his failures.  Again, I just do not get it.

Lastly, I think that out of the coaches that are out there and available, Muschamp is the best choice.  He is not my favorite candidate, but he is the best choice, and has the ability to come to Auburn.  It is too bad, that again… Jay Jacobs will more than likely keep a good coach from being at Auburn.

Sorry for being so downtrodden… I am still coming to grips with all of this.  Please comment, and let us know your thoughts.

As always, War Damn Eagle

Agreed...

Jacobs has once again, proven himself unfit for his position. Just pitiful. And it’s not so much the firing as it is the way it was handled and carried out. Unbelievable. Tubbs for AD I say..

I agree 100%. I don’t blame Tuberville for leaving. Auburn has treated him like crap since he arrived.

Coaches

As I watch the articles roll in about the immediate crumble of a stellar recruiting class, I have to wonder if Jacobs is just that stupid not to already have someone in mind. Can he seriously thinks he knows what’s better for this program than his head coach did?

Each season he put respectable players on the field and put us in contention. All except this one season. How can a man be so short sighted? In that position as much as any at the University you represent so much more than the kids on the field and the BOT. You put yourself in the middle of a huge show every fall that is College Football. This happens and immediately the pundits are out blasting Auburn. We all take it personally.

The more and more I think about it the more absurd it seems. Look at this man’s record. Look at the GPA’s of the kids, and their ability to stay out of trouble, and (oh by the way) their success on the field.

Don’t tell me you’re going to roll the dice with a guy like Mike Leach who has done a stellar job but just now has built his program. Don’t tell me you’re considering Petrino after the bitter taste we all have and his ridiculous resume. Don’t tell me we’re going to Cincinnati to take a flyer on someone else new.

So my question to our fearless leader Jacobs is: Find me a coach with a better resume than Tuberville. At that point I still will hate the way you have shaped Auburn in the media, and the poor way you handled this.

But at least if you find someone clearly better, I’ll know you’re at the very least minimally competent to handle this job. You at least had a plan. You at least had foresight. To be an AD, you aren’t waking up wondering who your coach will be next season.

Show me that, otherwise I’d ask you to kindly take your bloated paycheck and retire.

Same....

I had the same thoughts about Tuberville for AD last year when they ran off Muschamp, who should have been named coach in waiting at Auburn rather than Texas. The correct move would have been to promote Muschamp to head coach in a few years, boot Jacobs, and put Tuberville in as AD. He runs the football team like a CEO, he would make a great AD, and I believe the Vince Dooley days of holding both positions at the same time are probably gone. Leach would be the exciting choice, which may or may not work out. Talk about an identity crisis, going from Defense oriented to defense not needed….a Petrino hire could prompt an all out revolt…I have always been a big supporter of Tuberville, but it may be time for a change, regardless, the situation was completely mishandled as usual and it leaves you thinking – why would a coach willingly subject themselves to this, who would want to come here now? sure there are lots of coaches who want a job in the SEC, but are we being set up as a stepping stone for bigger and better jobs by doing this. I know it’s hard to admit, but despite our success in recent years, there are a lot of other schools that historically speaking have a better track record than Auburn. This debacle is an embarrasment to the loyal fans of Auburn University, but as they say, this too shall pass.

War Eagle Anyway, good riddance 2008 bring on 2009!

I AGREE

I just cannot believe that Jay Jacobs and Auburn would treat CTT this way. After all that he has done for this program this is the way he is treated. I dont blame CTT for leaving. I wish him the best and I just pray that we can find someone as good as him, but I doubt it. I also think it is funny that CTT wanted to go to the spread and tried to, but it blew up in his face. So what is Jay Jacob’s answer for our program ? Lets go hire another spread guru. Good thinking Jay.

I agree with everything you said up until..

you called for Muschamp to be hired as HC. Jay Jacobs is an embarrassment but he is only the symptom of the problem. Until Bobby Lowder and CO. are forced to leave the BOT and keep their power hungary grubby little hands of the atheletic department it will be more of the same. I am not saying I don’t want Jacobs head because I do……he should be fired and banned from ever coming on campus. I am mad as hell over this but unfortunately I am not of the multimillionare alumni set that could do anything about it. It will either take continued mass pressure from the bulk of the alumni or a few powerful more philanthropic alumni (Mr. Harbert where are you in all of this) to oust the BOT and replace them with less self serving individuals. Don’t mistake all of the media’s talk of Tuberville “resigning” for anything other than what it was……he was forced out plain and simple. As far as a coach to hire? It needs to be someone like Butch Davis, Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll, and so on and so forth……I know the only one of those coaches we would even have a prayer of getting is Butch Davis but that is my point. You don’t fire one of the top 10 coaches in college football unless you know that you can replace him with someone as good or better. Will Muschamp is not it. Maybe some day he will be but right now the only thing he has shown is that he can scream and get in someones face. No if you fire a coach like Tuberville you had damn well better be willing to get someone at least as good…….that leaves out Mike Leach and Bobby Petrino (thank god Petrino has a "no compete clause that includes all SEC west schools).

Muschamp...

I would go so far as to say that I called for Muschamp. I think out of the rumored people he is the best choice. He has said he is not interested… but we will see. I do not think that Butch Davis will end up here. I think he looks as the ACC as a place he can win. Hell they almost did it this year. Grobe is too old, Johnson is entrenched at Tech. Leach is the wrong answer, Jimbo Fisher is one of the most overrated coaches ever in my opinion, Dooley is not ready, I cannot see Auburn wanting Turner Gill. Charlie Strong would be ok, but…

Muschamp is the only one I see that makes any since. I am not a fan of him at the moment, but I was not a huge Tuberville fan until two years in. :)

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

Muschamp...

might turn out to be the best coach ever or he might turn out to be Greg Robinson or Gene Chizik. Butch Davis is the only coach that I can see coming to AU with the ability and clout to make an immediate impact. Charlie Strong and Turner Gill are both more qualified than Muschamp but it if you fire a top ten coach you had better replace him with a top ten coach. This is a huge snafu on AU’s part namely Jay Jacobs, Jay Gogue, and the Board of Trustees.

Why we lost a good coach

A buddy of mine who’s wife teaches with a niece of the coaching staff said that Jacobs asked him to fire his entire staff and start over. Since tuberville has a soul, he couldnt do that, nor did he want to start from scratch after ten years of the plains.

by macgyver on Dec 4, 2008 9:48 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

???

Didn’t he say that he would allow the new coordinator to bring in his own staff??

You have to know....

that nothing Tuberville proposed would be acceptable……they wanted him gone and thats the only way this would end.

Can we start a petition to have Jacobs fired???

Tubs

We (unfortunately, Jacobs and the board represent the Auburn family of which I am a scholarship donor alum) made a terrible decision to remove Tubs. I always have believed Auburn football was much more than wins and losses. Tubs has run a quality program, recruited good people who have gone to class and achieved, and the players have not put themselves in the police blotter. Try to find that success story at most other SEC football programs.

Sure, Tubs appears to have made mistakes, as we all do. He probably did not brown nose the power brokers and Jacobs enough, gambled on too many coordinators, and kept his non-coordinator assistants too long. He deserved a chance to rectify that problem – our decision to fire him sends the wrong message about what college athletics should be – that being competing honestly and shaping young people’s lives by giving them an opportunity. Unfortunately, the deed is done and I thank OUR Coach Tubs for 10 great years.

As far as OUR future coach, let’s be honest. We do not have enough info about each person to decide. My 2 cents worth is that merely from wins and losses, we should consider Brian Kelly, regardless of his comments about staying @ Cincinnati. He has been a winner everywhere he has been. Also, Turner Gill would be a fallback in my eyes. Hopefully they both are quality people, like Tubs. Lastly, Leach from Texas Tech would be a disaster – running a pass happy, gimmick offense and a strange personality – a LOUSY fit on the Plains. We already failed this year with a gimmick offense; let’s not go down that same road with Leach.

I can only hope that Jacobs makes a quality choice (Brian Kelly) – his job is on the line with this hire. May our wounded spirits heal.

Well said....

I would have to say that if they do hire an up’n comer Brian Kelley is the best choice in my opinion as well. However, I will keep saying it…..if you fire a coach like Tommy Tuberville you had better damn well know the coach you’re bringing in is better.

Tuberville, a class act.

Here are some recent words from Tuberville, posted in an ariticle by Charles Goldberg at:

http://blog.al.com/goldmine/2008/12/tuberville_says_he_has_no_anom.html

On Auburn and a family life:

``I’m not in any hurry to do anything. I want to stay in Auburn. My kids love it here, so does my wife. We have a lot of friends. Eventually, I’ll have to get a job, go back to work. I’ll look at several different options. I’m not saying what it will be and what it’s going to be. I’m going to turn back into a husband and father, which I haven’t been much of the last 15 years. This is going to give me a chance to go to a lot of high school basketball games. Suzanne and I can travel a little bit, go out to dinner. Again, I’m not in a hurry to do anything.’’

On staying in Auburn:

``I’m going to work a little bit with Dr. Gogue and see if there’s anything he wants me to do. I’m an Auburn person and I believe in this school. They’ve done a lot more for me than I’ve done for them, so I’m going to try to give back as much as I can as long as I’m not really doing anything. But I’m not going to be in the way. You’re not going to hear from me much publicly.’’

On his future:

``This will be a good time for me to sit back and count my blessings for what we’ve had and look to the future and do as much as I can for the people here, and make a plan for the next 10-15 years.

``I fully intend to coach. I’m not going to jump into any situation. I want to do what’s best for family, and for opportunites. I’ll sit back and evaluate, probably through the holidays, to see the direction I need to go. Right now, I want to help the healing process, if there needs to be, with me leaving. I’m not saying people are disappointed I’m leaving, but anytime there’s a change, there could be a division. We’ve had huge support. We’re fortunate, very blessed, to have been here 10 years.’’

A man of Quality, and Character are hard to replace....

much less a winning football coach. The Jay’s need to be held accountable…….if they do not replace him in a way that improves in both regards they should be run out of town on a rail.
