Who's Going To Succeed Tuberville?

Head Coach Mike Leach, Esquire
Like I mentioned in the comments yesterday, the Tuberville firing is one of those things that makes me want to take my diploma off my office wall and shove it into a drawer somewhere. Not since Jetgate have I been so utterly disappointed in my school. By turning on Tuberville so quickly, the administration has once again demonstrated the ruthlessness of college athletics and failed to live up to the Auburn spirit--which includes giving a person a chance at redemption. I thought that Tubs was a true believer of the Auburn faith and we have repaid his loyalty with a knife in the back. And following the sentiments of the other contributors on here, I'm all for a TOTAL house cleaning, which should also include Jay Jacobs getting shown the door so we can get someone in there more adept at such a position.
The next coaching hire is going to be very difficult and comes at a critical time, namely the rise of Alabama and Saban. The AJC's Tony Barnhart devoted a whole column to the subject this morning that should be read by everyone. The jest of it is that if Auburn doesn't knock one out of the park with their next coach, we could be left out in the cold for a while to come.
Gathering up the names of possible candidates to replace Tubs is akin to a goat rodeo at this point. Rumors fly and many players in the game hold their cards closely to their vest, so delivering you accurate assessments will be a work in progress. I'll attempt to run down as unabridged list as I can at this juncture, and please feel free to contribute your own insight, innuendo, and speculations.
First up is a few names MOST of you have heard of:
Mike Leach: Current Texas Tech coach and probably the hottest name out there ever since he took a clandestine trip to interview for the Washington Huskies job this past weekend and put the world on notice that he'll listen to offers. Auburn has made contact with him to gauge his interest.
Bobby Petrino: Was approached non-directly about the possibility. He supposedly has rebuffed any further advances. Whoever's idea this was to approach Petrino considering the history should be fired immediately. That's nothing but a slap in the face to Tuberville. It's mean and vicious. The feasibility of Petrino is practically nil, so this only served the purpose of throwing one last knife at the back of Tuberville. Real nice, whoever did this. Idiot...
Will Muschamp: Just promoted to coach-in-waiting status at Texas to keep him put for a few years. Many suitors were probably going to come calling otherwise. I'm still unsure if his deal is signed yet. Still don't know if he's seasoned enough for a HC job, but I don't doubt this Georgia alum's desire to one day return to the SEC under ideal circumstances.
Houston Nutt: I think he might have been approached unofficially, but probably won't be going anywhere. A third SEC west team in three years might make him look a little too opportunistic and flighty--kinda like Petrino. Besides, Ole Miss would really hate us if we poached our 2nd coach in a row from them...
Steve Spurrier: Ever since his rebirth in Columbia has seemly ground to a halt, Spurrier gets more mentions for SEC coaching vacancies than you get UFO sightings out of trailer parks. Although I believe that Alabama offered him a job two years ago, I firmly believe that he is going no where, literally AND figuratively, at South Carolina.
Paul Johnson: The new Georgia Tech coach and freshly minted ACC coach of the year. His stock has shot up dramatically and he LOVES to run the ball. Just don't think he's the ship-jumping type, though.
Okay, some names that aren't as familiar:
Jimbo Fisher: Another coach-in-waiting at FSU, and another with some Auburn experience, having been an assistant under Terry Bowden. With Bobby Bowden locked in The Coaching Race of Death with Joe Paterno, can Fisher keep waiting for one of them to kick the bucket?
Derek Dooley: HC at Louisiana Tech, who's enjoyed some success recently, and certainly has the pedigree, being the son of Vince. not sure if he's ready for the show yet...
Brian Kelly: HC at Cincinatti, having a good year after winning the Big Eas(y)t and a BCS Bowl bid. His name is getting a lot of buzz. I don't know much about him yet.
Chris Peterson: HC at Boise State, you know, the team that plays on that please don't adjust your television set field. Undefeated this year and possibly going to a BCS bowl. He might be ready for the big leagues...
Todd Graham: HC at Tulsa. Having some success there. He and OC Gus Malzohn, who himself was mentioned as a possible OC hire for us before the Tubs firing, sure do know how to score some points.
Bill Cowher: Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach, who's name often gets thrown out for college vacancies. Good damn coach, but it's highly unlikley that he would want to go to the college ranks.
Well, that's what I got so far. Will keep you updated as more information filters through. Let us know what you've heard and hopefully we'll get this narrowed down soon enough.

Does anyone know how to get letter to CTT that doesn’t go through Lowders and Jacobs Auburn University?
Candidates...
……Besides not liking the idea of giving up 60 points to the upper echelon SEC teams on a regular basis, here’s another thing going on with Leach and the pirates in Lubbock…
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3744701&campaign=rss&source=NCFHeadlines
Did I mention...
…..Jay Jacobs is a lying sack of XXXX? Petrino… my god. How is his name on the media lists? I’m too shell-shocked to know WHO we could get, right now.
How could Petrino be under consideration?
Why is his name being tossed around? It’s sickening.
Did any boosters or trustees or armchair ADs look at Petrino’s contract before contacting him?
The clause that he agreed to about not coaching for another SEC West school?
Petrino has shark eyes. Dead eyes.
Nice
Puh-leeeease hire Paul Johnson. Make it happen somehow Auburn.
That might make the pain subside somewhat …
He'd be good for the next few years
I’d worry about his ability to recruit talent on the offensive side that wants a future in the NFL, though…

Ironically,
…..about all we’ve really got the players for, IS to run Paul Johnson’s offense. We don’t have enough quality receivers to even run a Pro-I effectively in the SEC, much less a spread! Lead blockers are a problem, too.
…..Depending on Kodi’s ability to run the option, Johnson’s offense might roll, if everyone’s willing to make sacrifices. Now, if Kodi can’t read the containment, and make good dive/keep/pitch decisions, it won’t work. I saw LOTS of veer/wishbone teams back in the 1970s that DIDN’T do so well, because the QB pretty much had to be told what to do before the snap. Caudle might be able to run the option, too. He’s got good speed, but I’d worry about fragility.
…..We’d need Ben Tate to be primarily a dive-man, and rare pass protector. Seems like he’d be pretty good at that, but it’s a thankless position. Eric Smith could back Tate up. Fannin would have to be the pitch man. Maybe Pierre-Louis on the corner, as well. Trott and McKenzie would make capable wingback/tight ends. We DO have some decent linemen. We’d line up Billings and Hawthorne to block, and run routes/take out a cornerback.
…..The problem with Johnson’s offense is that the better SEC defensive coordinators won’t sit there in cover two, and try to stop an all-out running attack with 7 guys, like Willie Martinez did last Saturday. You’re going to see cover one robber, or even cover zero, with one safety over top to chase down pass receivers, on the ten or so passes we’d throw a game. Against Georgia, Tech tried only 6 passes, completed only one.
I was thinking about it yesterday actually
Kodi at QB, Tate at FB, Fannin and Davis as WB’s. It could be damn good.

Derek Dooley?
Son of Vince Dooley,…wouldn’t that be like a “Terry Bowden II” remake/situation of sorts,…a son of a coaching legend, given a shot at the big time in a major college program?
Though Derek may be a better caliber coach than Terry ultimately turned out to be, I don’t think Auburn needs to go anywhere near that scenario again,…and surely not now,….

Dooley...
…..and Bowden really don’t compare. Regardless of what you read, Terry Bowden was a GREAT on the field coach. Recruiting, public relations, getting along with the administration, no. But he knew his ball, his Xs and Os! He made great adjustments on the fly. His play calling was good.
…..Statistically analyzing Bowden’s teams, they had their best offense in the second quarter. They’d go out, and see what the D was doing in the first quarter, then you’d see an drives in the 2nd. Before his brother Tommy left after 1996, Terry’s second quarter points against SEC schools 1993-1996, averaged 9.78 a game.
…..If Dooley was named Derek Smith, and not “Dooley,” do you think he’d be getting a look?
Good points.
I think Terry had some great play calling, too. And the undefeated season was very much appreciated. Mainly am considering the total package, on and off the field. I’ve never forgiven him for abandoning the team.

Dooley
is also AD at La Tech and is a fantastic recruiter. He used to be Saban’s recruiting coordinator at LSU. A LSU buddy tells me that the purple Tigers have long thought of Dooley as a potential coach-in-waiting for themselves…

Hell NO to LEACH
We do not need this strange bird and his gimmick offense. Also, he recruits criminals:
DEA ARRESTS TEXAS TECH’S SANDERS
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 4, 2008, 12:32 p.m.
The Drug Enforcement Agency announced today that it has arrested a Texas Tech football player.
The player, backup defensive back De’Shon Sanders was arrested by DEA agents in downtown Lubbock at 1:30 this morning. The DEA would not give any details, other than to say Sanders was arrested without incident.
Sanders played in all 12 games for Texas Tech this season, but he has never started a game for the Red Raiders and was mostly a bit player on special teams.
A a junior from Hobbs, New Mexico, Sanders transferred to Texas Tech from City College of San Francisco. As a junior college player, both Rivals and Scout listed him as a three-star prospect, and he was also recruited by Oregon, Minnesota and New Mexico.
Let’s get Brian Kelly
Spend the Saban Dollars and get Butch Davis......
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
He turned down Tennessee...
…Todd, so I really do think he’s staying put.

How much did they offer him?
Did they really pursue him hard? These are important questions.

and we don’t know what their offer consisted of.

My vote goes to...
either Chris Petersen or Will Muschamp. Unless we can land Spurrier by some strange twist of fate.
I agree 100% on the contacting of Petrino. What a waste that was. Our athletic dept is in shambles.

My personal choice...
right now, regardless of feasibility, is Paul Johnson. But you all know what a rushing whore I am…

Too hurt & disappointed
I am way to hurt and disappointed by the actions of Lowder and his cronies to even think about a successor right now. I’ve written an open letter to Auburn letting them know just what I think, there’s a copy of it on my blog if you’re interested…
I like the Spurrier idea....
Just my personal preference. He’s the only one that can hang with Saban on those lists on the recruiting trail and in generating excitement. Don’t like Leach. He doesn’t even look like a head coach. Muschamp is smart enough to not go into a Jay Jacobs run Athletic Dept. But that’s my experience. They should not have let Tubs go. Boneheads!
Did you see...
…any strange lights in the sky last night? Any cigar or saucer shaped objects? Just curious…
:-)
by War Eagle Atlanta on Dec 4, 2008 2:50 PM CST up reply actions
nope
It’s just a personal preference of any on the list. It’s most likely not going to happen.
However if these clouds lift up over Alabama and Georgia tonight, find the moon. Look under the moon and you’ll see two bright lights in the sky. They aren’t saucers. They’re planets. Venus (the brightest) and Jupiter. Just a little trivia for ya!
Its looking like...
Mike Leach more and more. And I don’t think that is enough to turn this situation around. They’ve got to get someon huge that will generate some serious excitement.

Leach
I hear he will sign his extension with Tech tonight…rumor has it at something in the area of $2.5 mm with incentives to push it near $3 mm…
Auburn isn’t a fit for him and vice versa. I think he realizes that. You guys need/probably want a smash mouth kind of guy. You won’t get anything close to that with a spread coach.
Plus, who would really honestly want to work for that administration if their reputation is even half as bad as people paint?
BREAKING NEWS
From a fanpost, Leach withdraws name from consideration for Washington job.
Infer what you want…
by War Eagle Atlanta on Dec 4, 2008 4:16 PM CST reply actions
I think
the general feeling around Tech was that if Leach was going to leave it would only be for the west coast. There is a feeling that he’ll now sign the extension tonight/tomorrow and stay at Tech. While it may be reported he’s interested in Auburn, I think it’s interest as in, “sure, that may be a cool gig if I was wanting to move farther east…” not, “YES! Get me on a plane ASAP!” like he did for UW.
Remember, Leach shows “interest” in every job. He always has and probably always will. That’s his nature. I wouldn’t get too excited over this one.
Of course...
Leach, from a business standpoint, would have to be an idiot NOT to use others’ interests in him to obtain a more favorable contract with TT if that’s where he wants to be.
Tuberville used rumors and innuendo about his imminent departure last year to parlay his existing contract into a raise only one year in, but burned valuable political capital in the process, probably contributing to the situation at hand…

Too bad
we can’t use the same tactics in the real world. My boss would lock me out if he knew I was interviewing…odd how coaches in any sport can pull that little trick.
Simple supply and demand economics, my friend...
with a WHOLE lot of hype, courtesy of 24/7 news coverage…

Well, I guess my supply clearly exceeds my demand because I’d be looking for a new gig tomorrow if it was me doing that : )
I work for myself...
…and STILL don’t like paying me my going rate…

You'd be crazy not to go after Phillip Fulmer.
