Auburn Granted Permission To Speak With Gill

Medium_gill-button_medium

**Button is courtesy of an unknown fan.  Thanks to Evan Woodbery for finding this!**

It looks like Auburn will interview Turner Gill!

Star-divide

According to reports Auburn asked and received permission to speak with Buffalo head coach, Turner Gill.

Gill and his Bulls won the MAC Championship Friday by defeating Ball State who was undefeated.  Are they doing this to just make the NCAA happy?  I would seriously doubt it.  Anyone who has read up on Turner Gill would agree that he would be a good fit at Auburn.  It's not the splashy name that we are looking for but his character and ability to turn the Bulls around in a short amount time should be encouraging to all of us!

Syracuse not like Auburn

You have to be kidding theres no way in the world anyone would pick Syracuse over Auburn i mean come on the sec this is not the wac or confrence usa this is were football players are drafted from the sec if JJ and Lowder handle this right AU could get in the championship game next year imagine what he could do with Rymond Cotton at the controls with this guy all our recruits may stay so whats the problem. The only thing is the big wigs at AU are sure to screw this up as well

the only downside to Turner Gill,

is the fact that I don’t think he will leave his team until after the bowl game, and that is January 3rd. That means he doesn’t start recruiting until mid January not giving much room to improve this class for this year. His name really isn’t big enough to draw recruits off of it alone without him selling himself to them.

by Mattco on Dec 6, 2008 10:48 PM CST reply actions

let tubbs keep recruting

The great AD weve got said tubbs was helping ask him to recruit until Gill gets his AU hat hell its the least he could do we did pay him 5 mil right

Speaking of recruiting, James Willis...

is said to be recruiting like a mad man for Auburn right now. If I had to guess, Willis will probably be retained on the new coach’s staff, whoever the new coach may be,…I suppose much like Joe Whitt survived several coaching changes himself at Auburn. In addition to being a great coach, Whitt was a great recruiter whom related well to the players and the players to him. I would imagine Willis is likewise following right along in Whitt’s footsteps.

downside...temporarily

i agree, and he should coach the bowl game.
we have talent. i mean, look what he did at buffalo.
he can survive on what we have and get us in the peach bowl next year.
he can recruit what he needs the next years for our nat’l title runs.

Turner Gill?

Come on guys, wakeup! This guy has done nothing to elevate himself to this post. He beat Ball St. Ball State?

by Titusville Tiger on Dec 7, 2008 8:38 AM CST reply actions

Have you any idea where Buffalo was before he got there?

Buffalo was consistantly the last placed team in the whole of Div 1A. Get a clue.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Dec 8, 2008 8:11 AM CST up reply actions

Done nothing ????

He has won three national titles while coaching under the legendary TOM OSBORNE. He only turned around the worst team in div 1 and made them champions. Let’s get him.. Look at Urban Meyer, Bowling Green and Utah. I will take experience at Nebraska and Buffalo, under the tutelage of Osborne one of the best ever.

Are you old enough to be on here.....

or are you just coming off of your medication? Bob Stoops? And he would leave OU for what reason again? Money? No already making the big bucks, Clause in contract to make him highest paid coach. To win NC’s? No he can do that at OU. Better Golf Courses…..EUREKA! Bob Stoops will come to AU for Year-round golf. Brilliant!

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Dec 8, 2008 8:15 AM CST up reply actions

Realism

Bob Stoops is not going to leave Oklahoma for anyone. I think he has built a home there and enjoys where he lives. Now, if you want to go at least in that same direction Charlie Strong as the Defensive Coordinator at Florida isn’t a bad choice at all. After all, there was a time Stoops was a coordinator on defense at UF if my memory serves me correctly. Though with age, it’s very possible I might be mistaken in this matter.

Turner Gill would not be sad. I’m not sure how anyone could call him a joke. He has had success everywhere he goes and deserves the respect from fans to not be called a joke. I’m not saying he’s the best choice necessarily, but he certainly isn’t the worst one. I would love a new face at Auburn, I just want him to be good for us.

Now, big names should not be forgotten forever. I really don’t want the vaunted Jimbo, though. I am not a fan of his, and I think he would be a huge step down from Tubberville. If we’re going to really go after a coach in waiting as it were, Muschamp is our man. He is a great fit. Also, I do feel a bit bad for Paul Rhodes and he’s been thrown under the bus unfairly. Auburn’s defense did a decent job when one considers just how bad our offense was this year. I personally wished we kept him if we’re planning on getting an offensive guy. I truly think he was a good coach and he could’ve really helped the AU defense a great deal. Plus, are we going to keep Eddie Gran? If anyone should be kept from the Tubberville Era, it’s him most certainly.

by Sparkey on Dec 7, 2008 3:52 PM CST reply actions

Eddie Gran

Must stay, he is our only lifeline with Raymond Cotton. See the article on Rivals.com. He has basically said he is gone if Gran leaves he already decomitted after Tbbs left and Gran called him up and go him back. We must keep him around.

Forgive my grammatical errors if you will. I realize I certainly made a few of them and remarks on my intelligence aren’t accurate after a few mistakes on my first post.

Well than we will never be up there with usc lsu florida texas oklahoma.

Turner Gill

Not sure why, but I’m drinking the Turner Gill kool-aid with you. He has been a winner in everything he has done; player, coach, and life. I certainly have made mistakes in evaluating talent. I also once said Emmitt Smith would never make it in the NFL.

by Titusville Tiger on Dec 7, 2008 5:10 PM CST reply actions

we play ball state next year.

by justjim on Dec 7, 2008 7:55 PM CST reply actions

A couple of points

Both Gill and Jacobs are outspoken christians, a fact which surely works in Gill’s favor.
If Gill stays at Buffalo, in a year or two that program will be a MAC powerhouse, and some big-league school will eventually hire him away. Why not get him now, ahead of the market?
If Gill is hired by Auburn, will he keep an eye aimed toward the Nebraska top job?
ESPN reports Auburn will interview Brady Hoke (Ball St. head coach).

by atlWDE on Dec 7, 2008 9:07 PM CST reply actions

Does anyone know when this interview will happen? Or if they have even set a date and time yet?

by AUdavis5 on Dec 7, 2008 11:22 PM CST reply actions

Whats your thoughts?

Will TUBBS coach again anytime soon?

by aubie375 on Dec 7, 2008 11:23 PM CST reply actions

Other Options

Really? Are these the only options we have on the table? I think we should be able to do so much more. Its obvious that everyone is looking for the spread with a solid defense……what about Jim Leavitt from South Florida in the Big East.

by aubie375 on Dec 7, 2008 11:26 PM CST reply actions

With all the success Coach Tuberville had here in Auburn and the things he has done with this program in the last 10 years….. I really don’t think it will be long before he is coaching again.

by AUdavis5 on Dec 7, 2008 11:38 PM CST reply actions

I’m not worried about what Tubberville will do in all honesty. I think he built a good program at Auburn, but he got just over $5 million to quit coaching and just basically stay on the employment list at Auburn and not work. I’m not saying that’s exactly what happened, but it pretty close. Come on, we as the family of Auburn need to move ahead and help support our next coach.

I’m not stuck on Turner Gill, but I think he would be a good choice. He gives credit to his players, and he seems like a class act. He carries himself in a classy way, I’d like to have that here at Auburn. I grew a bit tired of the constant smirk you saw on Tommy’s face every week and his attitude that losing just didn’t seem to bother him that much. That for me, was the most infuriating thing he could do when Auburn was beaten. Still, like I said, we have to move forward.

Brady Hoke wouldn’t be a terrible gain either, though I’m not sure he has the skills of Turner Gill. Having said that, he’s still a really good coach. Chris Petersen wouldn’t hurt us either, but I wonder he can compete recruiting wise. When I consider his location, he doesn’t have a whole lot of competition to get recruits away from him. More than anything, I want the best recruiter. I don’t care about the x’s and o’s so much as the guy who can get the top talent in the state. Plus, doing it in a classy way is what I would really prefer-but, we’ll see who we get. Just please, no Jimbo Fisher.

by Sparkey on Dec 7, 2008 11:51 PM CST reply actions

I do agree with you. Noooo Jimbo Fisher. I really do like Turner Gill, but that’s not who I am stuck on just yet. I do think with all this stuff going on about black coaches in college football it would be pretty cool to have him here as our coach and win games and championships and be competitive and successful. No matter what the color of your skin is….
