Auburn Recruiting Looks To Finish On Solid Ground

Ray Goff: Recruiting Legend
The big week is finally here.  All the hype of recruiting will be over in a few short days. On Wednesday there will be winners crowned and smiles all around.

Recruiting "experts" will tell all of us why now is the time to crown Alabama the 2011 National Champions.

Forget what happens on the field. Champions are made in February, not November. Or at least that’s what they want us to believe.

If you’ve been following recruiting closely in recent days, you have heard that Alabama is now ranked first nationally by Scouts Inc. in this year’s recruiting wars.

But February Madness is far from over. There’s still time for Florida or Notre Dame to catch them.

It’s all really silly. And it gets worse every year. As we’ve talked before, how can you really classify one class ahead of another when comparing athletes from all 50 states?

Even the recruiting services can’t agree. Rivals.com has Florida ranked first nationally, while Scout has them eighth.

For what it’s worth, Auburn is ranked 16th by Rivals and 19th by Scout.

I know former Georgia coach Ray Goff wishes recruiting counted for more. If it did, he’d have a least five national championships and would by now have his name on Samford Stadium.

Auburn’s recruiting class appears to be solid though not stellar. Alabama looks like it has hit a grand slam.

Give them credit. Nick Saban got it done in state. By all accounts, Auburn and Alabama went head-to-head six times for athletes and Bama got them all.

There’s been obvious speculation as to how Alabama beat Auburn for these players. We won’t discuss that here. But the bottom line is they did get them.

Not all of them will be superstars. Many will never play. But when you look at the overall pool of talent that was landed in Tuscaloosa, you have to believe that more than a few will be impact players.

There’s no need for Auburn fans to hold their heads low. When you land top 20 classes on a yearly basis, you’re going to compete for championships. The difference between Auburn and Alabama’s class will be miniscule at best when it comes to talent.

The difference will be made on the practice field. How much stronger will these young men get? How many position coaches will they play for? How will they adapt to life on their own?

These questions are far more important than how fast they run the 40 yard dash.

Tommy Tuberville says he’s pleased with the results and by all indications he should be. He has met the needs of the team.

There’s still some work left to do in the closing hours. Tuberville was in Virginia by 6:00 a.m. on Friday to meet with running back Enrique Davis. The Tigers still hold out hope that he’ll come back to the fold.

There’s also talk that Columbus, Georgia receiver Jarmon Fortson may change his commitment and go to Florida State. My guess is he’ll follow his quarterback and friend DeRon Furr and sign with the Tigers.

Those who try to read the minds of 18 year-olds are foolish. There are a million reasons a kid picks a school.

All that really matters is that Auburn gets its share. It’s something that Tuberville has always done and will do again on Wednesday morning.

Let the spin begin.

What will actually happen on the field...

.....is anyone's guess. I mean, wouldn't most of us agree that the best way to neutralize a monster defensive line is with Tom Brady in the shotgun, three-stepping it and firing to open receivers? And yet, the Pats ended up trying to run it up the middle, and having Brady seven-step drop, and get hammered.

.....At least an SEC QB won the Super Bowl. Again! And an Auburn guy who couldn't crack the playing rotation in Nall Ball, was the starting RB for the Super Bowl Champs. War Eagle!

And the difference maker was.......

the pats inability to have a balanced attack, no running game to speak of, hard to keep a defense honest when they know your not gonna pound it on the ground. On the other side, the constant beating the pats defense took as a result of Jacobs and Bradshaw kept the pats defense tired and always worried about the run. The Giants O-line played a whale of a game but it helps to have to running backs that keep getting stronger as the game progresses. Kudo's to Eli for playing smart, controlled, and hard. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS (but we already know that dont we)

Good article Jay. I am hoping we win out against the bammers and get Jarrell Harris the kid is a big hitter and has a nose for the ball much like Trey Blackmon.

Where to start?

Man o' man.  What in the world happened to our recruiting class this year?  The last month of recruiting, we actually managed to fall off the map in terms of in state recruits and off the map on the national spotlight.  At one point, we were a top 10 class and finish lucky to be in the top 25.

We had tremendous momentum going into recruiting and absolutely dropped the ball.  We needed depth at linebacker and dbs so what do we do?  We recruit like 8 quarterbacks, 3 running backs, 3 or 4 receivers, a few dbs and then the rest are defensive linemen.

I honestly can't blame a recruit for not coming to Auburn though.  We have managed to smear our name in every possible way in the past 4 years.  While being one of the top programs of the 2000s, we have had coaching scandals, coach firings and coaches quitting.  ONe decommittment from a recruit happens, it might be a slap in the face, but it happens.  We have found a way to run 3 off this recruiting season.  I am really irritated about this whole ordeal.  No way should we have lost every single top player in the state, but we did.

Thats a bit of.......

a knee jerk reaction and sounds like you pulled the words right out of finebaums mouth. The loss of the 3 recruits are not the end of the world and the recruiting class is very respectable. The QB's you mention are not all QB's only 4 were recruited as QB's and they are all atheletes, meaning they can play a number of positions. The lack of Offensive Lineman was the only shock to me although Jermaine Johnson is a stud. We needed D-backs and Recievers in a bad way that need has been filled and filled well. We needed D-lineman and that has been filled nicely as well. The loss of Enrique Davis and not getting Antoine McClain and Jerrell Harris were the only real disappointments. All this said and done don't get too wrapped up in dispair because the Bammers had such a stellar recruiting class. We are still loaded to the gills with talent. In fact that is one of the problems in recruiting against bammer this year, they could go into a kids home this year and tell them they could play right away and AU couldn't. And last of all we didn't lose every single top player from the state. Take a deep breath get a grip and support the NEWEST AUBURN FAMILY MEMBERS. War Damn Eagle!
