This Year's Dud - The LSU Bayou Bengals
It seems that every year in the Southeastern Conference there is a team that doesn't quite live up to their potential. Actually, that is an understatement. Let's say that every year there is a team that totally screws the pooch in the SEC. In 2000, the Tide started the season ranked 3rd in the country. They lost early and never ever recovered ending up at a stellar 3-8.
In 2001, the Auburn Tigers were the team. The Tigers looked awesome at times, and at other times looked dismal. Wins against the top-ranked Gators and a gutsy win at Georgia were squandered by a season ending injury to Cadillac Williams in the first quarter against Alabama. Auburn didn't recover from that injury and what looked like a promising season ended very badly with 3 straight losses. 8-5 You're welcome LSU!
In 2003, Auburn was the canine screwer again. A national championship caliber team lost 2 to start the season and never fully recovered. They ended up 8-5. Again, you're welcome LSU!
In 2006, Georgia took home the Gold of teams that lost when they shouldn't have. Along with an Auburn team that lost heavily AT HOME to Georgia and Arkansas.
In 2007, South Carolina took top honors by losing their last five games......
So, who is this years Dud? If I was a betting man, I'd go with Georgia because I don't think they have it in them to weather their harsh schedule.
But, I am not a betting man. I am a man that has sat quietly (until now) and watched Les Miles get away with some of the most BONEHEADED calls in the history of the game. If you look back, LSU hasn't actually beaten Auburn on the field since 2003. It has taken some seriously messed up divine intervention to grant them the successes that they have had. So, that being said, LSU is my team to squander opportunities and to totally screw the pooch this year.
They will start off 3-0 before playing Auburn, but that's where it will get interesting. LSU will lose handily to Auburn. Then, a Miss State team with a grudge will upset them. State is returning nine on a good defense. They will then get bamboozled by Florida.
The next week against South Carolina will be about the same outcome as with Miss State. Georgia will utterly embarrass Les Miles at home and increase the already uncontrollable heat on him. Then, two weeks later, Nick Saban will have a hand at his former school's demise.
By the time the next week comes around, things will be out of control. Miles will be the first guy to win a national championship and be in this type predicament. Ole Miss and Houston Nutt will be calling. Nutt has a good football team and things will get ugly when the final kneel down is made. LSU will beat Arkansas the next week in a feeble attempt at getting a bowl game, but they won't get it.
My prediction: LSU 6-6.
Thus goes the tyrant and that incredibly whimsical pony he road in on......

I think LSU will end up disappointing a lot of people, but nothing that drastic. It just seems that LSU is too loaded on both sides of the ball to go 6-6. Gameplan and coaching aside, LSU can win on straight athleticism

Amusing, but...
……With the o-line Miles had, he should be able to line up and run over Bama. LSU did that pretty well last year, and Bama is now without Wallace Gillberry and 3 starting linebackers. Ole Miss is taking some terrible injury lumps in camp this year, most notably Greg Hardy. Mississippi State only has a chance if they stop fumbling. They always go on a fumble-fest against LSU. And LSU nearly always picks at least one up, and runs it in for a TD.
……If you want to see an SEC team go unexpectedly in the toilet this year, all it would take is a serious injury to Tebow or Wilson. Alabama and Florida are heavily quarterback-dependent, and have no experience behind a seasoned starter…
???
Yall totally missed the jawing and sarcasm in this post…….Am I the only Auburn fan with a sense of humor?
I did think it was funny.
……I’m not a member of the “Miles is an idiot” camp, though. I could always be proved wrong on the field, though!
Interesting prediction...
I’m not sure they lose six. I think it’s possible for them to lose three. I agree Miles is probably the most inept coach to ever win a title. I’m moving the story to the front page.

My favorite part?
If you look back, LSU hasn’t actually beaten Auburn on the field since 2003.
I bet you could find this quote on any LSU board “If you look back, Auburn hasn’t actually beaten LSU on the field since 2002.” The truth is, the team that won 2004-2007 didn’t really do so convincingly and those games had their share of officiating “issues”. The difference is LSU has really capitalized on the odd years, where as AU get’s all geared up (and beat up) for the LSU game and then sputters.
Then, a Miss State team with a grudge will upset them. State is returning nine on a good defense.
LSU is a top tier program, and as such, doesn’t lose to MIss St. That job is reserved for the state of Alabama. Besides, we are in their head (the closest that game has been in the last 5 years was 30 pts), and it’s at home. Please.
I think losses to AU, UGA, UF, and SC are all possible, so I think 8-4 is our worst case. We’ll probably go 9-3, but I’m hoping for 10-2.
*NOTE: The above prediction assumes that Tubberville has pitty on us and our lines come out injury (chopblock) free from the AU game.
Agreed
Too many close calls to say one team or the other should be on a multiple-game winning streak.
Don’t look past Miss St., you’ll regret it. USC is a “top tier program” as well, they shouldn’t lose to Stanford, but they did. It’s part of the game.
Also, enjoy being a “top tier program” because your time is slipping away. I still believe Miles isn’t a very good head coach, and LSU is on a slow fade into mediocrity. It won’t happen this year, it won’t happen next year, but it will be soon.
LSU prediction: 10-2, losses to Auburn and Alabama

I said last season....
that LSU would lose twice to teams they had no business losing to (and they did). This year that number will be cut in half and they will only suffer one loss to an inferior opponent. But there will be at least two other losses (possibly three) to accompany it. And I doubt it will be Alabama for the very reason Acid said (bama linebackers will be panting with their hands on their hips and heads down by half time). And I have a hard time seeing Arkansas beat anyone ranked this year. Ole Miss or South Carolina are the obvious choices with Miss State being the one in the shadows. AU, UF, UGA are the teams that they will do very well to go 1 of 3 in and could very well go 0 for 3. Miles probably won’t have the opportunity to throw chance to the wind that often this year because he won’t be in as many close games. But, who knows, he may be the second coming of Knute Rockne and we’re way off base (although I severely doubt it).
P.S. You can certainly count me as a member of the “Miles is an idiot” camp.
Well...
P.S. You can certainly count me as a member of the "Miles is an idiot" camp.
Who needs a Tommy Tubberville when you have God on your side?
It has taken some seriously messed up divine intervention to grant them the successes that they have had.
Have you guys forgotten...
The Riverboat Gambler. Onside Kicks, going for it on 4th almost every other game, and trick plays….Tommy was the king of these back in the day. His style has definitely changed over the years, but I don’t quite understand how taking risks makes one an idiot.
If you watched the LSU-Florida game, you have to admit it was brave of Miles to go for it on 4th like 4-5 times. But if you remember the game, Tebow was on fire, i think LSU only stopped him like 2 times in the second half. And Florida’s D couldn’t stop LSU’s O-line and Hester.
Miles had some quote after the game that was something like, “I told the guys before the game, that if we had the chance to win the game….we were going for the win.” I think he knew what kind of player Tebow was, and took the game out of his hands.
No, I haven't forgotten it......
but I’m sure glad Tubby has…… You refer to one game and that is far from the entirety of the body of work. As I have said in previous posts in other articles Miles may “grow” out of it and prove us all wrong, but until then he can only be judged by what we have seen. In reference to Tuberville and the “Riverboat Gambler” shenanigans he flat out pissed me off on a regular basis and cost us a few games as well. And since Jet Gate he has been anything but a “Gambler”. And it wasnt until Jet Gate that I personally found a real reason to want to keep him and that was the defanging of lil’ Bobby Lowder our totalitarian dictator….I mean trustee (not to mention he has become very solid in his coaching). As far as Miles goes I’m waiting and watching to see if he overcomes his apparent deficiencies and becomes a good head coach, but until he does my opinion won’t change.
This is a repost from the UGA board...
On Miles’ call to go for the TD in the Auburn game…
People who think that was a dumb call obviously are misinformed, because people who are in the know, would know, that the coaches (Crowton AND Miles) made the right call.
First off, let’s not forget that Colt David was our full time field goal kicker for the first time last year. Yes he kicked PATs the year before but he shared FG duties and didn’t kick FG’s past 30 yds in the previous year. In his only pressure kick of the season, Colt missed a 57 yarder that would have won the UK game the week before. (Granted that was a huge kick and should not be held against him). We were on the 22 yd line in the AU game which meant a 39 yd kick. At that point in the season, Colt was 2/6 on field goals from 36-42 yds.
Let’s also not forget that Flynn threw for over 300 yds in the game, with over 200 of that in the second half. It was obvious we had the advantage in the passing game at that point. There was also a quote from Crowton the next day that said something like "We had seen Byrd beating his man off the line consistently during the game…"
So with around 20 seconds left, and holding a timeout, the coaches decide to take a shot at the endzone, rather than trust their first year starter kicker, who has never made a game winning kick, who was 2/6 on the year from this yardage range, and who maybe (and I’m guessing here) didn’t have a good report during pre-game kicking drills on that yardage kick on that side of the field (he would have been kicking into the wind).
At that point in the game, and at that point in Colt’s career, anyone hedging their NC bets on a unproven college kicker is a moron. Not Miles.
Did the play take longer than expected to run? Probably. Was there still enough time after that snafu to run another play? Yep. (You only need one second to run a play, and there were 4 when Byrd caught the ball) I’m glad Miles put the game on his shoulders at that point instead of letting the kicker take the blame if he misses that kick. (Which he probably would have, looking at the evidence). That’s called playing the percentages people, and the percentages were in our favor.
The two dumber plays on that drive in my opinion were Tubby’s decision to pooch the kickoff, and his decision not to take a time out and let us drain the clock from 30 seconds to 1 without AU getting one play. But hey, we aren’t arguing who’s dumber. LSU won the game.
Not necessarily dumb
But against conventional football wisdom. If you’re going to take a shot at the end zone, you shouldn’t wait that long. How would you have felt if the pass were incomplete and time ran out, or if it was intercepted? Would you still support the call?
If it were me, and I wanted to toss it in the end zone (I wouldn’t, but that’s just me) I would have done it about 5 seconds sooner. I believe LSU still had a timeout, so if it had fallen incomplete with, say, 10 seconds left on the clock, they still could have tried a running play to get it to the middle of the field, and call timeout with 1-3 seconds left. One caveat: my memory is a little fuzzy, so I’m not sure what down the pass play was on. If it was 3rd down, then disregard all that I just typed up.
The crux of the issue is just because someone keeps getting away with stupid calls doesn’t make the calls right. If I’m leading by 4 points with 30 seconds to go on my opponent’s 40 yard line, all I need to do is take a knee. If I instead call a hail mary and it works, and I’m ahead by 11, that doesn’t make the call right. The result was right, not the call.
If one of the 5 fourth down tries in the Florida game had failed or if the pass in the Auburn game had been intercepted, the Baton Rouge police would still be searching the bayous for Les Miles’ body.

He can't read a clock
Miles said himself the only reason he called the play is because he read the clock wrong. What a genius!

Reasons
Okay, so I went to the extreme on this paricular story. My reasons behind going this direction were simple. LSU should have lost 5 games last year and with a much more talented team. I stand by at least 5 losses. Maybe they get one or two of those that I called, but, in the end all of you will be like….hey! He was right!!!! Wait and see!!!
Not really
because at the end of the day he IS a moron with talented players. It is like the idiot boss that keeps his job because his employees make him look good. Let’s call it the Michael Scott effect.
Not Gonna Happen
6-6 is a stretch for LSU. They have some of the best talent in the country. Granted, Les is an idiot but he has way too much talent for a 6-6 season. 10-2 or 11-1 would be my prediction.
WDE
11-1?
So, with no experience at QB, and only 13 starters remaining, this year’s LSU team will exceed that of last years NC team which had a 5th year senior at QB… While 11-1 is more likely than 6-6, I don’t see how that can happen. 10-2 tops. 9-3 probable.
