Coaches We Love To Hate
What is there not to like about Saint Nick?
By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com
Last week we talked about the football programs we hate the most. One of our readers pointed out that often the reason we hate a program is not because of the school, but because of the coach. That's exactly right. A coach has a way of passing his personality on to his team.
So who are the most hated coaches in America? It's a tough question. Often times the most hated coaches are the most successful ones. But not always. Below is a list of the ten coaches I hate the most.
Who tops your list? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Share them with us in the comment section at the bottom. Here goes...
- Bobby Petrino (Arkansas) - Is there a bigger scumbag in any level of coaching than the weasel from Montana? Not only did he quit on his former team, but he treated grown men like children. And let's not forget what he did to Tommy Tuberville. The guy has no integrity or loyalty.
- Nick Saban (Alabama) - If you could buy him for what he's worth and sell him for what Alabama fans think he's worth, we could all retire to Aruba.
- Les Miles (LSU) - He could be the most inept coach to ever win a national title. His play calling skills are the worst and his personality makes me immediately turn the channel.
- Bobby Bowden (Florida State) - Call him Saint Bobby if you wish; but I don't see it. He's been turning criminals into football players for longer than most of us have been alive. Plus he's the father of Terry. Enough said.
- Steve Spurrier (South Carolina) - It's true he's more likeable as a loser, but it's hard to forget his arrogance at Florida.
- Mack Brown (Texas) - After stealing two of our defensive coordinators, how can we not hate him? I hope that Will guy tanks.
- Urban Meyer (Florida) - While not as bad as Spurrier, Meyer still exudes that "I'm a little better than you" attitude. Beating him two years in a row sure felt good.
- Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) - Has any coach failed in big games more than Stoops? This may be the most overrated program in the country.
- Tommy Bowden (Clemson) - See above. He's guilty by association. I don't care that he coached at Auburn. He's still related to them.
- Mark Richt (Georgia) - It was just a matter of time before his alma mater (Miami) seeped back into his personality. The new Richt showed his true colors against Florida last year. Now he's following his mentor, Bowden, by recruiting criminals to Athens.

My list
Only five that I can say I truly hate.
1) Nick Saban- needs no explanation
2) Mark Richt- didn’t hate him until after the AU game last year (classless!)
3) Bobby Petrino- see Jay’s
4) Pete Carroll- is there anyone other than USC fans who don’t hate this guy?
5) Mack Brown- see Jay’s
Not a big fan of Miles either, but I like to hear him talk crap about other conferences and Alabama.

There’s really no rhyme or reason to my hatred. I’m just expressing an opinion, but it certainly doesn’t make me like you if you beat my teams’ ass. Like the comment below says "his self-righteousness just rubs me the wrong way."

1. Bobby Petrino- scummy douchebag, ruined my Falcons…okay Vick ruined my Falcons, but he didn’t help matters. my friends have renamed him Pussyface.
2. Mark Richt- his self righteous act rubs me the wrong way, plus i will always hate him for the blackout
3. Jim Tressel- sweater vests and undeserving national title bids that end in flames
4. Bobby Bowden- too many reasons to bother trying to list them.
5. Bob Stoops- for 2004, for his constant pandering, for choking in big games
i have to disagree with the hatred of Pete Carrol though. i’d say other than CTT, there’s no coach in America i’d rather play for. he just wants to “Win Forever”, what’s wrong with that? the guy is charming, an amazing recruiter, and loves to beat the hell out of some out of SEC and Big 10 teams. i could care less about the reggie bush stuff. the guy is a great coach. anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot or a homer.

Mixed feelings on Pete
I started out hating this guy because of his proclamation in 2003, “The Rose Bowl will be our national championship game.” The same Rose Bowl where they played #4 Michigan. Two weeks before the end of the season, Pete Carrol is all about the BCS, and then he flip flops on the night it becomes evident that he isn’t going to make the NC game. I think he was dishonest.
That being said. I think he is a great coach. I love his positive attitude. And I love the fact that he went for the win against UT on 4th down. I think he instills a confidence/arrogance in his players that truly elevates their level of play.

I'm with Zandor...
You’re not allowed to hate a coach that secretly you’d want coaching your team some day. Prickily Pete falls in that catagory for me.

Hate to pick on the SEC but.......cant help it!!!
1. Bobby Petrino – I can’t say what I think about him here.
2. Bob Stoops – This guy is the biggest whiner on the planet. From his comments that ESPN is bias toward the SEC during the 2004 season (even though ABC had the TV contract with the Big 12 and owns ESPN) to his whining that the game against Oregon in 2006 should have been thrown out after the bad onside kick call. Although a horrible call, that is what happens when you have subjective judging (refereeing). It wasn’t the first bad call and in CFB and it won’t be the last. Get over it.
3. Steve Spurrier – No need to say more…..although in a weird way I would like to see him succeed at South Carolina.
4. Urban Meyer – Liked him at Utah and Bowling Green, but as Jay noted, he has this arrogance about him now. And his love for Tebow is a little scary!!!
5. Phil Fulmer – For not disciplining his athletes.
6. Charlie Weiss – What has he done and yet he is a god to a lot of the media and Notre Dame.
7. Les Miles – I cannot stand ignorance. And I do not think he deserves what he has.
8. Nick Saban – Didn’t mind him at LSU but every time he opens his mouth at UA, I hate him more. And the fact that he suspended DJ Hall for a game only to activate him at halftime of the UL Monroe game because the game was tied.
9. Mark Richt – Didn’t mind him until his stunt last year against Florida. Also for not disciplining his 8 players who have been arrested this year.
10. Frank Beamer – No good reason….just annoys me. But it also seems as though he has back doors his way into some big bowl games and over rated rankings.
This was tougher than the teams poll because I don’t believe in hating a coach just because he wins or beats us. It is everything else he does and how he conducts himself.

Those deserving honorable (or dis-honorable) mention.....to name a few!!!
- Jimmy Johnson: For his stint at Miami
- Larry Coker: Again Miami
- Rich Rodriguez: For jumping ship a year after signing an extention, only to contest the buyout and use lame excuses such as his contract wasn’t being aheared to with building upgrades not being completed.
- Dennis Franchione: For what he did to his seniors, yeah they were bama players but put yourself in their shoes, you have any oppotunity to seek other options after the NCAA sanctions your program. Your coach convinces you to stay only to bolt himself.
- Jackie Sherrell: For all but destoying the MSU program.
- Mike Price: Just a plain IDIOT
- Dan Hawkins: As proven at Colorado, isnt anybody without Chris Peterson.
- Steve Mariucci: Didn’t do anything at Cal before getting his promotion to the 49ers.

How about "Thenator Lou Holtz"
This guy got a broadcast position so he can make insane comments, bad picks, and basically crap on all of college football. All despite the fact that almost eery program he left was sanctioned soon after his departure. Also, and please note I have nothing against people w/ speech impediments, but do we really need them in broadcast positions (this goes for you to Strahan). I used to not be able to stand Corso til the “Thenator” came along.

It think it's funny...
that people hate coaches who haven’t really done anything negative to their team but beat them…Like Les Miles.
Les Miles (LSU) – He could be the most inept coach to ever win a national title. His play calling skills are the worst and his personality makes me immediately turn the channel.
I mean, I can see a bama fan hating him, with all the trash talk and everything, but I don’t really get it from Auburn fans. I’m suspecting fear is the primary driver for the Les Miles hate on this board.
I hate Urban Meyer for the LSU bashing (and every other school bashing) he’s been doing on the recruiting trail lately. His little stunt with Patrick (Johnson) Peterson last year was pretty low.
I don’t think I need to mention about Tubby’s standing with LSU fans.

Miami...
.....Just yesterday, (1983. I mean, 25 years ago, that’s not that far back, right?) Miami played two bowl teams in the regular season, lost to one, and tied one. Auburn beat 9 bowl teams, had a better record… And the AP leapfrogged Miami over Auburn when Miami beat Nebraska, who’d sat atop the polls and basically played nobody good, all year. Naturally, it’s Howard Schnellenberger and the Miami players’ fault…

The Real Reason Auburn fans hate Miami.
Auburn fans hate every team that has won a national championship the past 50 years. Watch out LSU, you guys are climbing up their ladder of hatred.

I pretty much hate...
.....all coaches. They yell at you, find fault with your game, put you through agonizing drills, then bench you and let the kid that goes to their church start in your spot. How to pick a top 10?
.....All kidding aside, I’m going to try. Maybe you shouldn’t hate a coach just because he beats your butt consistently, but it’s hard not to put one like that on the list. Some of the ones on my list are dead. Doesn’t matter. I still don’t like ‘em.
1. Bear Bryant. “Cow College.” Refused to shake Shug’s hand after Punt-Bama-Punt.
2. Jackie Sherrill. Players stomping on logos, and generally crude teams.
3. Woody Hayes. Slugged an opposing player. Many disparaging comments about the quality of football in the south.
4. Barry Switzer. Oklahoma was Thug U. before Miami was. Busted for trying to take a pistol onto a plane. Presided over the decline of the Dallas Cowboys.
5. Lee Corso. 62-0, Lee! Yeah, he used to be a coach…
6. Houston Nutt. Two faced turd. Produced Larry Bua, possibly the dirtiest CFB player I’ve ever seen.
7. Terry Bowden. Quitter. No one’s going to hire you, Buster Brown!
8. Marc Richt. Gets the “biggest load of BS” award for that story he told about the celebration penalty at SEC Media Days.
9. Dick McPherson. The late Syracuse coach who went ballistic when Pat Dye sent in the kicking unit for the tie, in the 1988 Sugar Bowl. Cry baby.
10. Buddy Ryan. Got undue credit for the “Bear Defense,” allowing him to get several NFL head jobs and ruin several teams.

My Top 5 hated coaches
1. Tommy Tuberville – Where do I Start: Numero Uno(that means number one fyi) – a blabbering idiot who cannot go a day w/o whining to someone about how unfair ESPN and the college football world is to him, No. 2) for some reason wears a sweatshirt, a hoodie, a polo, an undershirt, a dri-fit shirt to offset the gallons of perspiration caused by the before mentioned apparel, and a sweatervest on the sidelines every Saturday in the stifling Alabama heat, and No. 3) the most arrogant coach in the history of the world to have never accomplished anything on a national level except for beating the other team in the state who has had its worst collective 15 years or so in its existence. FYI: if a pitiful TAMU program doesn’t want you Tubs, nobody wants you so you can quit asking the AU athletic dept. every year to give you another contract so you WILL NOT consider opening positions.
1a. Tony Franklin – and Aubies think Alabama fans should be realists, just in case you didnt know, Tony Franklins big time jobs have been: 1.) the University of KENTUCKY, where he was involved in NCAA infractions and irregularities, thus causing him to accept a position @ (.........wait for it….......) 2.) TROY University. so please do not assume that he is indeed the 2nd coming. Nick’s already gotten here lol
2. Tommy Tuberville’s Left Ear – if you’ve ever seen it, you wouldn’t like it either
3. Tommy Tuberville’s Right Ear – (see 2 for details)
4. Pat Dye – unable to finish a sentence w/o first gagging, choking, or coughing up a lung, ” Well we played pretty…..(gasp)..(choke)...........(cough)(cough)..........(struggle for air)................(saliva strangulation).........(flem)(flem)(flem)......(silence in order to regain consciousness)..... damn good defense today” – Pat Dye
5. Shug Jordan – oh wait, i kinda liked ole’ Shug cause he got his tail handed to him every year by that (quote, unquote) “classless” legend they called the “Bear”
Now go ahead Aubies, talk about the six year winning streak i dont care. All i know is until Auburn fans quit worrying about which coaches and teams they all hate and start putting some rings on those six fingers, the Auburn Tigers will ALWAYS be that OTHER team in the state. WEAGLE WEAGLE

Jay, I think Finebaum...
.....is trolling on your site. It’s the “make sh.. up” parts that clued me in.
1 a. Franklin got blackballed for blowing the whistle on Mumme. Franklin’s not named in any of the NCAA findings.
4. If you’re going to try to imitate Pat Dye, you have to stick several “uh-BULL-itty” statements in there…
.....Hmmm. Since “the Barr” checked out, Auburn has 5 SEC rings to Bama’s 3.
.....Top 5 coaches that hated Alabama:
5. Mike Price (left Alabama over un-approved Panama City strippers)
4. Gene Stallings (left to raise cows in Texas)
3. Dennis Franchione (left Bama for Texas A&M)
2. Ray Perkins (left Bama for the Tampa Bay Bucs)
1. Bill Curry (left Bama for Kentucky)
Roll Tired. (Coaches tired of Tide fans, that is.)

Tune into the Finebaum Radio Network. M-F 2-6 p.m.
If that’s the only thing I made up, I think I did a pretty good job (didnt know we would actually have a NCAA insider visiting this enthralling site). PS – Since “the Barr” checked out, Alabama still has one more nat’l championship ring than Auburn has. Sorry :( but true. And if Gene Stallings wanted to raise cows, why did he have to go all the way to Texas, when the cow capital of the world was only a few hundred miles away? Weagle, Weagle, WarDamnEagle, stick it in the butt big blue!

Here goes......
1. Howard Schellenberger “Beat No. 1 Be No. 1” quote still pisses me off.
2. Barry Switzer (Jackie Sherrill with rings)
3. Jackie Sherrill “program destroying cheat” may not be an honest bone in his body.
4. Lou Holtz “slobberin buffoon as an announcer and a golden dome sycophant”.
5. Bob Stoops “ESPN has an SEC Bias, its not fair, its not fair, Oklahoma is No. 2” yeah right.
6. Phillip Fulmer “stabbed Johnny Majors in the back while he was recovering from a heart attack in order to steal his bosses job”
7. Steve Spurrier , just an arrogant bastage.
8. Mack Brown Stop stealin our coordinators
9. Ara Parseghian (showing my age)
10. Bobby Petrino “great coach no class”

Why Barnies Hate Petrino, Saban, and Richt
1) Barnies hate Bobby Lowder even more for not following through with Petrino’s hiring. Judging by Tuberredneck’s embarrassing track record, no one outside of Opelika, Alabama fears this man simply because he’s already proven he can’t win when he’s not doing it at the expense of another program’s weakness. It took the guy six years to finally post a winning record in the SEC, and it took him ten years to finally win one SEC title, which came around the time he cleverly filled Alabama’s void courtesy of the NCAA, also with an upperclassmen team that cheated to remain eligible that year. You don’t threaten to fire a "good coach" the way they did Tubs, then boast him to be godlike after the downfall of his main competition. When the playing field levels out, and Alabama takes the state back picking up where they left off (8 out of 12 wins prior to 2002 aka the year our downfall began), they’ll regret retaining Tuberredneck instead of replacing him with Petrino.
http://www.firetommytuberville.org
2) Barnies hate Nick Saban simply because he’s Alabama’s coach and they fear he’ll soon be the proverbial nail in their coffin. I say this because we all cannot imagine how absolutely dominating LSU would be right now if CNS had stayed at LSU instead of taking the Miami job. They would probably be the closest thing to a dynasty. Now that he’s at Alabama and his first season was 7-6, there is a perception out there that his coaching ranking takes a hit. When he makes us a perennial contender for top recruits (already started that), SEC championships and NCs, I don’t doubt that he’ll be considered the best coach in the country and that’ll give Barnies a reason to hate him even more. He transformed an weakling LSU program that had endured 7 losing seasons in the 1990s, into a powerhouse that’s owned the SEC West since they won their first SEC title of the decade. 2 SEC titles and 1 National title in five years is quite impressive if you ask me.
3) Mark Richt has turned UGA into an elite SEC program, that has now taken back the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, and are showing no signs of giving it back. Barnies will point out every minor flaw relating to criminal recruiting and dancing in the endzone. If you think celebrating a victory in the endzone is any worse than taunting your opposition by holding up fingers, taking the field first on the opposition’s turf, not punishing your players for purposely bumping into members of the yell crew, and allowing your players to stomp the opposing team’s midfield logo, then you’re obviously a Barnie. Yes, Mark Richt is having trouble with some of his players, but compare that to how many players have given Tuberredneck a fit since he took the job at The Alabama PolyTECHnic Institute. But when you’re not accustomed to winning, it shows in the post game ceremony.
