This Is Not An Offense That Can Win In The SEC
Folks, we have all seen a lot of Auburn football and we have also seen a lot of bad offense from Auburn over the years because we just didn't get the top tier skill position players aside from the tailback position. We REALLY haven't had a game changing quarterback since Pat Sullivan, and I don't think we've ever had a game changing wide receiver. Good receivers yes, but game changers? I don't think so.
Having said that, I think we have a typical Auburn offense. Riches at tailback, a solid offensive line and mediocity everywhere else. If Tony Franklin wants to run the spread offense, great, just wait until we have the tools to run it. Right now we have a QB with a weak arm that consistently underthrows his very average receivers. Chris Todd may be a nice guy and may be a great JUCO QB but he does not have the stuff to win in the SEC. Its painful to watch him go through his progressions while the O-line struggles to hold back the rush, only to watch him throw a puff ball into double coverage.
So we know....as does everyone else....that we are going to run the ball to advance down the field. Therefore we saw what we saw tonight, a minimum of 8 players within 6 yards of the line on 1st and 2nd down. Our pathetic attempts to run outside are squashed quickly because we need blocking from the WR's to get past the line of scrimmage. There is absolutely NO FEAR of the passing attack because Todd cannot make a quick read and hit an open receiver without letting the defense get back into the play, his arm just isn't strong enough to make the defense pay for coverage lapses.
Kodi Burns DOES have that arm but he does NOT look at all comfortable in the offense and has been ineffective when he has played. The long and short is that we have played three games and we have not scored an offensive touchdown in 4 of the 6 halves we have played. I think the jury is in, and the verdict is Auburn is not ready to run the spread offense, our wide recievers can't block and can't get open on their pass routes. Chris Todd is not a legitimate passing threat and aside from Tistan Davis, our running backs do not have the speed to run outside the tackles consistently.
Here's the good news though, even though we only managed a lone field goal in offense tonight, we didn't lose. That being said, we stand to lose the rest of the games on the schedule that aren't homecoming opponents and that includes Vandy. I shudder to think what will happen next week against LSU and their speedy defense.
We are not prepared to take on such an opponent and unless we revert to a more standard offense featuring our running backs and utilizing the tight end as a blocker. We may still not score much but I can't believe it would look any nore inept than Franklins, Spread offese. Please Coach Tuberville, you still have a chance to to take advantage of our great defense and have a great season, but you must come to your senses and change our vapid offensive to a more traditional Auburn offense. Tell Tony, we tried it but it doesn't work and we aren't going to throw away our season to prove a point that already has been proven.

Wind
There was an extremely stiff wind left to right last night….That’s part of the reason Todd floated thoses passes. If we can fix O-line mistakes and convert half of our third downs(due to third and shorts) we will actually be okay….

Really? That's it?
Just fix the O line and play on a calm night… Wow! I guess I was just getting all worked up over nothing.
Were we watching the same game?
I saw tons of penalties that I haven’t seen before-can be fixed.
Byrum missed 2 field goals-can be fixed.
Fumbles can be prevented.
Uh, yeah it really is that simple. We had really no problem moving the ball against State. They have a solid, solid defense. If they fix these errors, which are in FUNDAMENTALS, and not in talent-we will be okay. Everyone stop acting like a bunch of ENTITLED BAMMERS and get your heads out of your asses!

I was watching the AU/Miss St game,
not sure which one you were tuned in to. I’m not arguing penalties, missed field goals and bone head mistakes by linemen who are trying to pass block when they were recruited to open holes in the SEC… Take those away and it was a “ROMPING” 9-0 win. The problems with this style offense is deeper than those subjects. Bottom line, it will take several years to make the changes necessary to be proficient at this offense because we do not have the type of WR, QB, OL to make it work. Period. Large ships do not turn on a dime. And all the while our stable of RB’s are becoming bored.
You really don’t know much about the game, do you? Hang in there though, you’ll get it eventually.

Were You Talking To Me?
I really hope not. Things are not as bad as everyone seems to believe. This is a classic overreaction of a fanbase gone mad. Don’t believe me? You just insulted me for my opinion, and what makes you look even worse-is that I am right!
WDE
I hope you're right
Maybe it’s overreaction or maybe there is some validity to our gripes and complaints. Only time will tell. I just don’t like the direction our offense is taking away from the tradition that makes us a feared opponent. I wonder what Bo thinks? I’m sorry you were insulted, remember: No one can insult you without your permission. I wasn’t insulted with your “thankless bammers” entry… Have a great week. Maybe we will run into each other on the plains this weekend. I’ll be wherever Erin Andrews is. War Eagle.
It will be a long year
As an AU fan living in the midwest, surrounded by KU and MU johnny come lately powerhouses, I was totally embarrased to invite my friends over to watch a “traditional” college football powerhouse. I was all set to rail this morning, but I think Col.Angus sums things up very well. Emotionally, I just can’t say it as well, I’m afraid.
What we witnessed last night was an atrocity. The offense looked like the 11 stooges out there. I’m still trying to figure out that silliness of everyne standing in unison and looking over at the sideline for guidance. When is a huddle not a huddle? Huddle up already! Maybe a huddle would have saved the 2 procedure penalties that took 2 nd short to 2nd and forever. I saw better football in a Friday night rainstorm.
I’m dreading next week. It will be ugly to say the least. The defense was amazing, so hat’s off to them. Tough to pitch a shut out and have the closer come in and give up 2 runs in the 9th….oh wait, wrong game. Anyway, great job to that side of the line. Play like that and LSU wont have an easy time, but the LSU offense will wear the D down much faster than the MSU excuse did.
I will still shout the virtues of SEC football and my beloved Tigers here in the midwest, but oh this is going to be tough.
Well put
I remeber hearing all through camp that this offense centered around running lots of plays quickly. Franklin made statements that there wouldn’t be a lot of play changes at the line of scrimmage. That if the Dlined up i n a formation to stop the play thaen we would just run it and get back to the line for the next play. Trying to audible out of the shoygun killed us last night. Our O line looked like they were playing their first college game because they were so confused with the switches and blocking assignments. You can’t run a lot of plays when you burn two downs jumping off sides.
We have had the same problems in every game: penalties and turnovers. The penalties are just stupid (on both sides of theball) facemasks, pass interference, holding, holding, holding. It has got to be cleaner. The turnovers are just carelessness with the football. Awful play calling to call that pitch late in the 4th. Why complicate things?
On the bright side, the best defensive game I think I have seen Auburn play. They bailed us out time and time again. keeping us in the game. Thank God for the D or last night may have been a bloodbath.
Something has got to change or we dont stand a chance. Our defense can’t be expected to play like that every week.
This is a surreal Sunday.
War Eagle.
Fire CTF and get back to Auburn football
That offense is not Auburn football. Get back to the Power I and get the Tight end involved again.
