Auburn Falls Short, in a Tough Battle.

.....War Eagle, everybody! It's Great to Be an Auburn Tiger. Auburn loses a tough struggle against a hard-nosed LSU team, 26-21. The Tigers had their chances, but defensive breakdowns in coverage cost the home team the lead in the 3rd quarter. Then, after a huge drive to to retake the lead, and a big defensive stop, Auburn failed to run the clock. LSU got another chance, and cashed it in on another breakdown in the Auburn coverage.

Star-divide

.....Both Auburn and LSU were VERY strong up front on defense early. In the second half, though, Auburn's nose guards got roughed up a bit. LSU was able to isolate the noseguard in the middle, and spring a fullback and tight end to take out Auburn linebackers. Charles Scott had a bushel-full of ten yard runs up the middle. Auburn's corners played well at times, but at times were out of their depth. They faced some tremendous athletes, and had difficulties. When Auburn went to the bench, they were promptly torched on a post for a touchdown. Due to the threat of Charles Scott on the ground, LSU was able to force Auburn safeties to cover dangerous receivers one on one. LSU was conservative for a while, but once they decided to throw on first down, the thinnest point on our defense was exposed.

.....On offense, LSU dominated our line up front. We cleaned up the penalties, but we absolutely could not move LSU off the ball. LSU forced us to make quick throws. They were NOT going to let the running game beat them. If we tried to go five wide, LSU blitzed. We made some of our worst plays off that "outnumber 'em" blitz. We continue to be plagued by dropped balls. I counted six. In the receiver corps, it was great to see Tim Hawthorne step up. He's got to continue to make plays, if we're to get better. Prior to Hawthorne and Dunn making some big plays, it seemed that the only Auburn receivers that a defense needed to defend, were Smith and Billings. Just let the others run free, and blitz. Chris Todd is probably going to catch a lot of blame for this loss, and as usual, he did make a few bad throws and decisions. We've gotta let him play though, as we saw with LSU's quarterback. I think he got better as the game went on.

.....Special teams imploded. We couldn't kick deep, we couldn't punt a ball farther than 30 yards, we let balls roll down deep, and we didn't block on returns. Wes Byrum did hit his kicks, so that's something. But our strength disappeared. The onsides kick was the worst. You KNEW it was coming. We were turning our backs to run down, and then not block on the kick return. Les Miles HAD to try it. Not only were we way back on it, they were able to catch it, block, and run, without an Auburn player in sight.

Grades

Defensive Line: B+. At times they made plays, but at times they were dominated. I give a grade this high, because LSU is probably the best offensive line we'll face all year. Our guys fought hard, and should be proud of themselves. Bonus for Gabe McKenzie's pick-six!

Linebackers: C. We got posted up on those inside runs, a lot. In the end, Charles Scott and LSU quarterbacks as runners, were too strong for the AU linebackers.

Secondary: C-. The secondary got burned repeatedly in the second half, being forced into a lot of man coverage by the success of the LSU running game. We don't have enough cover guys to play man against a good receiving corps like LSU. Once the quarterback settled down, we were in trouble.

Punting: D-. I'm giving this a passing grade only because we didn't get one blocked. Otherwise, it was abysmal, with a lot of short, low kicks. We got a LOT of lucky rolls. Additionally, we failed to capitalize on several mistakes by LSU return men.

Punt Returns: C-. No turnovers, and one good fair catch that saved us from being coffin-cornered, but Dunn let a LOT of balls roll.

Kick Returns: F. No blocking, and we can't even line up right. WAY too many whiffed blocks. And you can't retreat before the ball is kicked, with your back turned. You KNEW Les Miles was going to try that onsides kick!

Kickoffs: D-. We looked like last year's early team, again. If you are going to squib kick, you can't kick it right to an opposing player. You should have them scrambling to fall on the bouncing ball, if you're going to squib it.

Placekicking: A+. Wes Byrum made all three extra points. Otherwise, we were too consistent at getting sacked back out of field goal range.

Offensive Line: C. Points off on just a few bad plays in protection. These guys played strong against a defense determined to load the box, especially in pass protection. Chris Todd generally had time to throw, unless LSU sent six or more. Our run blocking was not as good, against a monster LSU front.

Receivers: B. Too many drops to give an A, but there were some encouraging signs. Rod Smith remains dangerous, and Montez Billings made plays. Tim Hawthorne and Robert Dunn stepped their games up. Tommy Trott made good blocks, but he looked like he brought last year's hands to the game.

Running Backs: C-. Had several missed protections. Tate and Lester combined for probably 70 yards. Several fumbles. On a day where we needed to knock out a few first downs, we generally couldn't.

Quarterback: C. Can't give higher than that, with more picks than touchdowns. Todd showed improvement, against a very tough defense. That's his first time to face a monster SEC unit like that, and I thought he had his moments. At times, Todd is wildly inaccurate. He also will learn that you just can't take a sack when you're in field goal range, standing with an empty backfield, and the defense showing a six man rush.

.....There have been calls in previous comments, for me to grade the coaches. While I'm not ready to start that, I thought there were a few notable failures. Obviously, our special teams had a really bad day, and seemed like they were not ready to play. Or even line up correctly. That's a tough grade for Eddie Gran.

.....Tony Franklin had some obvious good ideas on how to attack the LSU secondary, but in a low-scoring game, he MUST coach Chris Todd to let go of the ball before we get knocked out of field goal range. We had an under center, power formation schemed up for this game, and it got us a touchdown. WHERE was it, when we had taken a 21-20 lead, and needed to run some clock? HOW in the world does Franklin justify a five-wide set, a quick count, and a throw to LSU's bench, in that situation?

.....Once we knocked Andrew Hatch out of the game, Rhodes seemed to put WAY too much emphasis on blitzing Jarrett Lee. We let their running game get going, and we did not have what it takes to man up with a spread-out LSU formation. For the first time this year, Rhodes got seriously out-schemed, in the second half. In fairness to Rhodes, we did get overpowered at the point of attack a lot, in the second half. It was a choice of letting Charles Scott gut punch us to death, or having safeties cover wide receivers. Play action on first down killed us...

.....I'm sure Les Miles will take more criticism for outrageous game decisions, but from where I sat, I thought he and his staff called a better game than we did. Gary Crowton is scary, when they let him open up the offense...

.....We Auburn Tigers can't cry about this one for long, though. A ticked off Big Orange bunch comes in next week, and we face another talented group of athletes. Both Auburn and Tennessee are implementing new offenses, and from my perspective, Auburn does seem to have a leg up, having had success against LSU. UT didn't fare so well, against Florida.

.....War Eagle, and good night!

Play-Action on 1st down???

What is this play-action you speak of? I thought there was a rule you must run the Mutaha (%$#&ing read option and lose 2-3 yards.

I’ve not seen this play-action.

Tony Franklin proved to me he’s a high school coach coaching a high school offense with a high school QB with a high school arm.

You can’t line up in that shyte every effin down ESPECIALLY in the 4th quarter…with a lead….and throw out of it. Putting that defense back on the field after getting a stop was criminal.

by ChrisInInverness on Sep 21, 2008 12:25 AM CDT reply actions

Amen to That!

We fire old Al to go to Tony’s spread. Then in a brilliant move we bring in a drop back passer to run it. I don’t care if Cody doesn’t know five plays. When we had a one point lead in the fourth quarter we needed some first downs and a ground game which Cody could have delivered.

Why does every Auburn fan in this nation know that we are using the wrong quarterback, but Tubby and Tony do not. I say make some changes you @#$%^&&!

And that's why you're sitting at home during the game

We’ve had KODI Burns on our team for two years, plus talked about him a year before that during recruiting and you think his name is Cody. Well you sir definitely know so much about Auburn, the team, and how to run the team that you should definitely be on the sidelines.

by WarBlogle.com on Sep 21, 2008 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions

It was LSU running the play action.

…..I formation, fake to Scott, who HAD to be respected, and rifle it to a wide open tight end or slot receiver. Scott was running so hard, and the LSU line blocking so well, that Auburn was having to put 8 men in the box, to try and slow it down.

This one hurts...

It’s nearly 1:00 a.m. and I’m just getting home. Traffic out of Auburn was as bad as I’ve ever seen it. Still not sure what to make of the loss yet. In a lot ways it just looked like we got out coached. The players gave a great effort on both sides of the ball. War Eagle… Talk to you tomorrow.

I know...

It is disheartening that our beloved Tommy has been outcoached two years in row by Les Miles…I am not okay with that.

On a side note Jay…what WAS up with the traffic. I don’t know if you were on I-85 south, but if you were I am sorry. We made it back to Baldwin County at 3 AM.

WAR EAGLE….maybe next year???

Never thought I'd say it

but we were indeed outcoached by Les Miles

Traffic

I live 5 mins away from JHS and I didn’t get home until 1:00 a.m. And we left as soon as the game was over and went to my friend’s car.

I agree....

outcoached and special teams…..Cleburn County got home at 1:30,

A one sided passing attack spells losses in big games like this Where's Cody?

I couldn’t believe for the second time in an SEC game we didn’t bring the only guy that could make this offence work in. You guessed it CODY BURNS! Todd is a good drop back passer, but he will never be able to make the spread offence work. I’m so &$%#@ mad that it’s hard to contain myself. We pay Tubby big bucks to make these type decisions and once again he ignores what every Auburn fan (except for Tony and Todd’s mom) have been saing for the past week.

by golf476 on Sep 21, 2008 12:57 AM CDT reply actions

Please stop posting

You know so much about coaching a college team and think you can do so much better for Auburn but can’t even spell one of the star player’s names.

by WarBlogle.com on Sep 21, 2008 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Try Cody Tubby!

I wouldn’t have taken this game so hard if we would have at least tried Cody in some key situations. How about Cody in the 4 and 1 play? That would have been a back breaker and we didn’t take advantage of the situation.

by golf476 on Sep 21, 2008 1:00 AM CDT reply actions

Well.....

Why does everyone think Kodi-With a K!!!-can do any better? I’ve seen him play and he looks lost most of the time. From what I have heard-not a credible source-Kodi thinks he should be playing and isn’t exemplifying the essence of teamwork. I think that is the main reason he isnt playing. Let him transfer. Barret Trotter and Raymond Cotton are the future for Auburn at quarterback anyways.

by ArieGold on Sep 21, 2008 10:52 AM CDT reply actions

The way I see it with Kodi and Chris

I really haven’t seen anything out of Chris Todd that Kodi Burns can’t do. Todd played a hell of a game last night, I have to tip my cap. But he has zero arm strength, and like Acid mentioned, just simply misses throws at inopportune times. How did he miss a wide open Robert Dunn on 3rd and 25? That was a critical mistake.

The play where we showed receiver screen and Dunn took off on a go route was an excellent call. I wish Todd had put a little more on that ball because that LSU safety almost came over and picked it off. Just a tough loss to take.

Burns

Do they think Kodi is going to sit around forever while he gets told he will play and then over looked every week? Howlong til he jumps ship i wonder

by GumptownTiger on Sep 21, 2008 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I read somewhere (and it might have been on here)

that Tuberville met with Kodi’s parents after the USM game to convince them that he’s still in our plans. Not a good sign.

War Damn Eagle!

by PowerOfDixieland on Sep 21, 2008 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

From what I've heard out of the plains

is that the problem with Burns are the same problems he has always had. He is a gifted athlete, but he doesn’t have a football mind. He has trouble making in game calls and continually struggles to learn the offense. This is one reason why I haven’t had a huge problem with him not starting, but I still think the kid should be getting some snaps or why should he stick around?

by GumptownTiger on Sep 26, 2008 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Kodi Can't Do Better

My complaint is this…….I’m not against going with a spread offense because it seems to be the future….and I’m not against Todd, in fact I think he is a decent drop back passer. What I’m against is going with a spread offense and not using a spread QB. This put Todd in a bad way. LSU knew he couldn’t run so they didn’t have to cover him. Their backfield could close him down fairly quickly.

Kodi may not be our best quarterback, but when we put him in last year against Clemson he moved the ball. When we put Brandon Cox in he couldn’t. I know that the kicking game killed us too.

by golf476 on Sep 21, 2008 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Plenty of blame........

to go around in this one, even the defense at the end, but the biggest problem was 19 yard punts. We have the worst punter in the country, and our offense is trying hard to catch them. And i want Kodi to think he should be playing, todd is a wimp. Oh well, time to regroup and crush the vols. War Eagle

Todd blows!!!!

He’s got no accuarcy. Weve got a favarable schedual till we play georgia second to last game. So weve got some time to figure this out. The winner of the west is gonna have at least two losses in the division so were not outta this thing just yet. War Eagle

Actually the SEC West winner may only have one loss...

But LSU could easily lose to UGA and UF not to mention Ole Miss, MSU, Alabama, and South Carolina (Arkansas is a disaster this season and I predict will go winless in the SEC). I still believe that if AU wins out I will be watching them in the Georgia Dome. WAR DAMN EAGLE.

LSU will lose two games.

Unfortunately, AU will too. Let’s hope Bama loses 3!!!

by LSU Jonno on Sep 22, 2008 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe...

maybe not I think we have something for UGA this year. As for bama the only way they dont lose more than two is if they get extremely lucky and stay very healthy. They lose this week in Athens in a very ugly manner and the injuries could very easily start stacking up there.

by Todd92 on Sep 22, 2008 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

My thoughts on the Burns situation

There are reasons that he isn’t playing. We don’t know them because we aren’t coaches and are not on the team. Could it be that Todd is Franklin’s man? Yes. It very well could be. Could Kodi be in the dog house? Yes he could, but I don’t believe that that is the case. What I believe MAY be the problem is that Kodi can’t read defenses well enough. I do not believe he can read schemes and coverages as well as Chris can.

I was at the game last night watching from the endzone. Todd did an excellent job reading the defenses, going through checkdowns on pass plays and throwing to the proper receiver. Did he always put the ball on the money? No, but he did always throw to the proper receiver. While he may not be a Peyton Manning(nor is Burns), he isn’t a Brandon Cox either. He is clearly getting better as the season goes on. The more he plays, the more he will start clicking.

I think most people, and I’m not saying you’re one of them, automatically want the QB on the field to be the one that can run the best. That isn’t always the best option. If I heard "Fire Franklin" and "Play Kodi" once, I heard it a million times. And the majority of those people don’t know a zone block from a zone blitz.

While we are all passionate about Auburn football, lets just remember that CTT wouldn’t let Franklin play Todd the entire game if he too did not believe that it was the right thing to do. Just settle down and relax. It will get better.

Somewhere

Hal Mumme, Al Borges and Troy fans are getting a kick out of this.
- Running out of the shotgun won’t work in the SEC
- Shotgun everytime won’t work in the SEC
- Where was the ‘wearing down’ the opponent in the fourth qtr with this offense?
- Defense played good enough to win
- Todd is not to blame here
- We don’t have the personel to run this offense in the SEC
- Quit comparing the Sunbelt to the SEC (if you really want to know what kind of coach TF is look at his Kentucky stats in the SEC…)
- Look out Tommy, there might be a ‘tell all’ book that comes out of this season
- Would have loved to see what Borges’ spread offense could have done with Kodi at QB…
Maybe it will come together next week. War Eagle!

Franklin's Kentucky stats?

You mean the stats that said UK was 2nd in the country in passing offense and 11th in the country in total offense?

War Damn Eagle!

by PowerOfDixieland on Sep 21, 2008 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Ah...got me there

should have wikipedia’d it before i posted (still emotional at the time)
but after looking over the 2000 Kentucky stats. UK ended up 2-9 and 0-8 in SEC play. Granted, I know that stat doesn’t account for their defense and the inability to win the game. Also, this was Jared Lorenzen (I miss watching him play) running, I guess a spread style offense, with an accurate cannon for an arm and I seriously doubt they were running the same offense that AU is now running. Also interesting to note that the same year, we were 38th in rushing and 77th in passing and ended up 9-3 losing in the SEC C.G. to Florida. I think the difference is that we had more balance between the run/pass, which to me is missing in ’08.

However, I think the rest of my points are valid.

by tigerstripe on Sep 22, 2008 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Right.....

No Hal Mumme is trying to stay off probation at New Mexico State (I have heard he is being investigated again) and doesnt have time for laughter. Al Borges (whom I like) is jealous that Tony Franklin managed to get 320 yards of offense against LSU and Troy fans want Franklin Back.

as to the rest of your diatribe…..
-Offenses have been running out of the shotgun not only at AU but at every SEC school successfully since the early to mid eighties
-Running out of the Shotgun everyplay has worked in the SEC (Hal Mummes UK team, Urban Meyers 2006 Gator team had very few plays under center)
-the onside kick for LSU was a huge factor in getting LSU’s Defense rest while adding to the fatigue factor of AU’s Defense (which showed up huge in the last 6 minutes of the game with LSU’s running game)
-The offense played good enough to win. The defense ran out of gas.
-your right Todd is not to blame. LSU played a hell of a game and Miles gambled big time on the Onside Kickoff.
-be patient, I somehow doubt you have the skills to evaluate the talent for a peewee offense much less D1 college….so leave that to someone with the ability…..not only that but consider this….you actually have to run the offense before you can recruit specifically for it.
-Tommy has run a squeeky clean program and has no fear of a “tell all book”
-Borges didnt run a spread offense he ran a west coast offense and do you not remember last years MSU game with Kodi getting the nod? didnt think so.
-it came together this week you just cant see it.

and lastly the difference between the 2000 UK team and the 2000 AU team had little to do with offensive balance and everything to do with AU having a nasty defense and UK having a defense akin to a bad PAC 10 team.

Why we so bad on special teams?

I thought the boys played real hard and had the talent to win. I was also told that the kicker had the flu, I guess thats why we pooched kick , what seemed like every time. Two games in a row we started what seemed like every series at ten yard line or worse and the other team was almost at mid field or at least 35. Although we lost I had a good time at the game, it wasn’t the beat down many thought would happen. I think the real issue is special teams and field position, start off year looking like something special with Dunn, past two games look like crap. Maybe we should play some more starters on special teams like S. Carolina does.
