One Crazy Week Deserves Another

                                         TD, R.D.!!!

Anyone else getting that deja-vu feeling all over again with so many top teams going down this past weekend? Is it 2007 again?  #1, #3, and #4 all fall--two of them to major underdogs. Nor does any team know how to cover a spread anymore. (Especially us) If that's the way it's going to be, I'm going to quit betting on games and put all my money in mortgage-backed securities.

Just who do you think is going to be cast as the villain this week in the ESPN production of The Tigers of Wrath? Let's see. Poor little Vandy has never had Game Day at their place and they are leading the conference for the first time since the days of the SIAA. Auburn is a sluggish bore who hasn't let the heroes win a game against them since the Eisenhower administration. Make no mistake. Auburn will be the tall Phillistine with the big 'G' on his helmet. If CBS had the game again with Danielson and Lundquist, I'd know we were being set up, but maybe we'll get some love out of the ESPN announcing booth that we certainly won't see from Moe, Larry, and Corso.

Who would have thunk it--that three conference games in, we'd have our best offensive output against LSU? Our rushing and passing numbers are looking like a graph of last week's Dow Jones. Against MSU, we get a balance of rushing and passing, but no points. With LSU, passing goes up dramatically, but rushing falls off. Last week, we get neither. Who would have also thought that at this point in the season that platooning QBs might be the most attractive option...

Those crazy polls! #3 Georgia loses to #8 Alabama and falls to 11th in the AP. #1 USC and #4 Florida fall to nobodies and only drop to 9th and 12th, respectively--still ahead of us, mind you, which I'm not uncomfortable with. That's the way the polls have been going the last few years --it's like jury nullification in our legal system. Sure they lost, but we don't care. We still think they're good enough. LSU benefitted from that last year. I guess I can live with it until we get a playoff in a few years, as long as the SEC champ has virtually a guaranteed slot in the BCS championship game...

And finally...

An Open Letter to the Georgia Bulldogs

Dear Dogs:

Thanks for hosting College Game Day at your house the week after we threw it.  We gotta try to keep SEC appearances up. Too bad you didn't invite yourself. How are you a Kno-Shon  no-show to your own party? It could have been worse, though. You could have been Florida...

How did that whole  blank-out  black-out work for you? It kinda was like a funeral, huh? No sooner do you bury UGA VI inside Sanford stadium than Alabama buries the whole lot of you. The other team in Alabama could have used a little help this weekend. After all, we beat the Gators the two previous years for you, and you only split your rotation with the Sabanites...

We, and our fellow SEC colleagues, trust that this whole black-out issue will be put to bed once and for all. As one of our readers here so eloquently mentioned, you guys were truly starting to believe in that hocus-pocus, and frankly, the rest of us were starting to worry. So get well soon because we're going to need your heads in it when you play LSU. In trade, we'll knock-off Vandy for you so you can recapture the East lead. Man, has life taken a turn for the surreal...

Love,

War Eagle Atlanta

Think what Dameyune Craig....

…..might have done, had he been a seasoned starting quarterback by his junior year. Instead, we watched him struggle as a first-year starter against the good defenses in 1996; LSU, Florida, Bama. Play Burns, coaches! You’ll be sorry next year, if you don’t!

Looks like we won't need a run-off on that poll question

Burns with a majority as of right now. It would have been funny if Obama had more votes than Todd.

Perhaps...

…it’s Burns who has change we can believe in…

Call me old school if you wish...

but I still think a bad experience starting can ruin a young QB’s future. More success has been wrought by QB’s who have waited their turn and learned from the sideline than the old baptism by fire method as an underclassman. As far as Dameyune Craig he may have never been the QB he was as a senior had he had the bad years as a Freshman or Sophomore. Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.

My, my War Eagle Atlanta . . .

that’s some pretty impressive talk for a guy who’s team just, in order: a) held on to beat the Fighting Crooms 3-2, b) lost to LSU and c) escaped the gaping jaws of the Clawfense thanks mostly to Jonathan Crompton’s sprained cerebrum.

Who would have believed that you guys could find not one, but two quarterbacks who would make Brandon Cox look like an attractive option under center?

And even when other blackouts fail, we’ll always have the memories of 2007, won’t we?.Oh, and 2006. Tra Battle wanted me to remind you about 2006.

In all seriousness, congratulations on a gutty win this weekend. They can’t all be pretty. And if you could just keep doing what you’re doing on offense through November, that would be great. Thanks!

I wonder which is worse...

Watching two young QBs struggle along in a completely new offensive scheme, or watching your golden-haired veteran collapse in a big game. I guess that’s a question that only you can answer…

Yes, our win over Tennessee was indeed ugly, but not as ugly as your last two losses to them, to teams that were clearly inferior to yours.

And it is easy to bask in the glory of your longest winning streak against us in the last 25 years, but I’ll tell you what would impress me more: for you to win the trifecta of Tennessee, Florida, and Auburn for the first time EVER, or at least since the conference realigned in 1992. You guys never were historical rivals against the Vols. As good a coach as Richt is, his failure to do this has always been his short-coming.

But don’t think that we won’t again be rooting for you against LSU, fellow municipal-mascot-moniker guy MaconDawg. I think you owe us one…

Not to quibble . . .

but a 57% completion rate, 274 yards passing and 2 TD’s against a team that knew he would be slinging it on every down hardly strikes me as a “collapse”. Especially given that he was running for his life like Tray Blackmon after a traffic stop.

And way to go to the ole "you can’t beat [insert team that’s not mine] " line. That one’s always a winner.

And I’m curious precisely why we owe you one. We already gave you Pat Dye, Ben Leard and Daniel Cobb. What more do you people want?

Oh, you've given us far more than them...

…and thank you, BTW. Our 200+ game history with you and North Avenue Tech have cemented the pipeline that runs west over the Hooch, you know, the one that doesn’t dump raw sewage (grew up in Columbus/Ft. Benning—hoo-rah!)

If I was a betting man...

Based on some recent quotes by CTT and CTF, I would be willing to bet that AU might have yet another OC by th beginning of next football season. I sense that CTF is has shown a high degree of inflexibility and unresponsiveness to the ineptitude of the offense. Based on the new wrinkles that we saw last week , I’m kind of getting the vibes that CTT has taken more control of the offense and is doing everything that he can to put us in a position to be more productive right away.

Also, on another note. Even though UGA has beaten us handily that last couple of years, they’ve also proven to be consistently overrated and unable to handle the pressure of being a highly ranked team.

Any thoughts?

Gee...

consistently overrated and unable to handle the pressure of being a highly ranked team.

Are you talking about them or us???
