Give Us One More Last Chance...

We promise that we're really, really back this time!

Mal Moore must have some poker buddies in the publishing world who's clock he's cleaned good here lately. How else can you explain the onslaught of Bammer magazine covers? First, my beloved Forbes two weeks ago, with Nick Saban as the cover story, (thanks, Steve) but that was just an article on the business end of CFB and how much power Saban wields in T-town. But now yet another SI issue putting the world on notice again? Who do these guys think they are, Lexus?

Don't we remember what happened the last time the Gumps got this kind of exposure (ON the field...)? In 2005, they had just dispatched Florida at home on the way to a 9-0 record before blowing chunks to LSU at home and running into a wood chipper at Auburn (Hey Brodie! Honk! Honk!). Now I don't want to say that Bama fans are superstitious, but I think one or two of them might be worried about that fabled SI Curse, hence a less exuberant tone in Bammer Blogdom this go around.

See? This is the kind of unintended consequences I predicted by rooting for the Tide to represent the SEC well against the ACC with the Tiger Paws. I knew that if they managed to pull it out, it might give them hope again, and like a certain politician, might start to believe their own press. Alabama must first prove that they can play a whole season under Saban. They played a great game, and they deserve some praise, but let's wait a minute before we yank that million-dollar bandwagon out of the barn again. General Douglas MacArthur actually DID come back and didn't get this kind of media hoopla...

At least SI saw fit not to put Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson on the cover. Like his fellow long-haired predecessor Brodie, he's more suitable for People, US, or Tiger Beat (pun intended). So congrats to the Bammers for a great game, but you guys might better cross your fingers, knock on wood, and sacrifice a chicken to be on the safe side...

You can chalk all this up to Herbstreit.....

Throughout the whole 4th quarter Herbstreit was squawking about how Saban and the Tide were clearly ahead of schedule. KIRK…..for crying out loud SHUT UP!!! It was only one game and besides Clemson was obviously overrated. Don’t get me wrong….Bama played a great game and truth be known they were underrated going to into the game. But who cares about all the returning seniors that Clemson has. If you watched last year’s ‘eat more chik’n bowl’, you could see that. By and large that was a really boring game to watch. Clemson didn’t anything in that game that indicated those juniors would be a force to reckon with this year.

In the end, as we have all stated….it was one game. Clemson was PRE-SEASON overrated and BAMA was PRE-SEASON underrated. Only the SEASON (12 (or 13) games) will tell how good each team really is.

I used to appreciate Herbstreit’s word but ever since he started calling games with Musberger on ABC last season he falls more and more every week into that TV ratings/dollar money machine of talking up the current circumstance beyond reality to the point of stupidity and incompetence – and I am not just referring to the game last week. He did it throughout all of last season too!!!

This season reminds me of 2001...

There really isn’t a dominant team in the West this year. LSU and Auburn proved that in their week 1 lackluster performances. This is the “perfect storm” so to say for Alabama in that they could conceivably sneak into the SEC CG this year with a senior QB leading the way, much like LSU did in 2001 under Saban. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a 2 or 3 loss SEC west team in the SEC championship this year. I’m not saying Alabama is the favorite, but it is clearly a three horse race at this point with LSU, AU and Bama.

I’ll be wearing navy and orange for this year’s Iron Bowl.

2005

The only thing I would disagree with in your assessment of the premature cover is that we “blew chunks” against LSU in 2005. That was a very good LSU team, which beat Auburn that year, and Alabama led the game at the half and lost in overtime on a 3rd-down Jamarcus Russell TD pass after getting yet another FG on its possession in OT.

We may have blown chunks against Auburn in the Sack Brodie game, but we were a fairly legit 9-1 going into that game. It is a compliment to the program that a 9-1 (ultimately 10-2) team is not considered to have gotten the program “back” to its usual place.

Gen MacArthur's return

You’re right MacArthur did return…but it was years later and by then he was just about as broken as the Crimson Slide!

clemson

i’m not quite buying into clemson being overrated. four offensive starters will likely be first day draft picks (possibly w/in the first two rounds) and they were completely shut out. that nose guard is a beast, and bammer’s ground game was unstoppable. not to sound too pessimistic, but they looked way better than we did, against better competition. we’ll know if they’re for real in a few weeks (after georgia), but they were impressive.

Who's we?

Auburn’s ground attack would look better than any team’s if we would limit it to only two guys, but we run four or five PLUS the QB. Most teams run just one, or in Bama’s case, two. They’ll pare that down to one eventually, though…
