Pat Dye Saves Sammy The Cat

Pat_dye_2_medium
Pat Dye: Football coach and cat lover.

Good Wednesday morning to you. Three more work days until another long weekend. Martin Luther King Day may be the best timed holiday of the year. After taking some days off during Christmas it's great to jump right back into another three-day holiday.

Here's an unfortunate story that took place over the weekend in Auburn. You may remember the name Taylor Jones from last December. He's the 18 year-old student that organized the campus protest over Tommy Tuberville's firing. You'll remember the students marched to the President's Mansion and Taylor met briefly with school president Jay Gogue to voice his displeasure.

Early Sunday morning, Jones was involved in a fight at the Sigma Phi Epsilon House that has left him in unsatisfactory condition at a hospital in Columbus, Georgia. The fight is not believed to be related to the campus protest last year.

A lot of people ask what former Auburn Coach Pat Dye is up to these days. We know that he's been outspoken in his support of new coach Gene Chizik and may have even played a role in his hiring. He also runs a well know hunting lodge in Notasulga, Alabama. He's now got a new cause: Cat's Rights Supporter

It's seems that Dye has loaned his credibility to Sammy, the tiger-stripped cat that lives in the post office in tiny Notasulga. Dye's feline friend was evicted from his home by the postal service and forced to live outside. This has outraged many of the citizens of the small community, including Dye. Here's the story from WSFA in Montgomery. Can you tell it's a slow news day?

Finally, I want to share with you a YouTube clip from a recent Paul Finebaum radio broadcast where sports personality Tim Brando goes off on an Auburn fan who questions Brando's football playing experience. You need to ignore the video. Some Alabama yahoo puts up a stupid picture of the Auburn caller sitting on a toilet. I guess it's supposed to be funny, but it just makes the person posting it look ignorant. Anyway, listen to the audio. It's hilarious.  Brando totally losses his cool on-air. Apparently, this is not the first time he's been questioned about his credentials.

Nice...

How did that one slip by me? It seems that I am getting tons of emails with this sort of thing. This is the first I have heard of that one.

Good find Jay. Good question though, how much playing did he do? I might have to look that up.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

Zero...

But you don’t have to have played football to dissect it. That really is a lame argument.

Lets just say you want an opinion on a car engine

Would you take my opinion someone who has never worked on a car or would you take a mechanics opionion some one that has worked on cars? Either way it brings a “level” of discredit to his statements.

Maybe you can find someone who has never "worked" on a car

But knows tons and tons about it, and he could probably help you out.

The argument is flawed anyways because auto work is much more hands-on than football broadcasting.

Yes

The argument is flawed, but Brando cannot be allowed to act like that. I have to wonder how many fights a day Tim Brando wants after reacting that way towards the question. Not to mention, Brando should be used to having to behave himself in a public light. I sure hope none of his broadcasters make a joke like that to him. He might start a rumble up in the booth. Hell, sell it on pay per view. “Ultimate Press Box Fighting Championships. These guys earn their Press Pass!!”

Auto Mechanic

was used as an example but there is a Credibility aspect to the question. You can say you know alot about something but to say you have played the sport brings a “level of credibility to your statements” Know what im saying?

The problem is that if you ask a mechanic...

…..Most of ’em will tell you that you need a new engine, or at least a $1000 repair. And it could be said that mechanics are generally more honest than football coaches…

I think Brandos Reaction

answers the question perfectly. Why are Bammers proud of that? Their guy couldnt answer the simple question because his answer would have brought a level of discredit to his statements.

Brando, as much as I think he's a....

boil on butt of college atheletics, is not a “Bama” guy. And I have never been fond of his opinion of football nor his skills as a broadcaster (or lack thereof). But, the callers question was idiotic……I know plenty of people that have never played a down at any level who have good knowledge of the game. I have a hard time seeing the diminutive Rece Davis in pads…… but the Bammer is a very good Broadcaster and I respect his opinions on football. The caller, as most Finebaum callers are, was an idiot and a poor representative of Auburn University. Brando’s reaction was unprofessional and also a clear over reaction without a doubt but damn it people stop calling the Finebaum show…..

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Rece Davis was the QB at either Muscle Shoals or Florence High School

I always wondered where Rece Davis was from.....

didn’t know it was the shoals area…..just googled it. He played QB at Muscle Shoals….he graduated there in ’84. My comment still stands about the importance of playing and knowing the game….one is not a prerequisite of the other. Gary is an idiot and Brando (who I find very obnoxious and disagree with more than not) overreacted.

I listened to that tidbit

I still have never listened to the Finebaum show, nor do I ever plan on changing that lack of experience. I don’t have a clue if Finebaum’s voice is even in that clip or not, and truthfully I couldn’t give a damn. By the way, Brando should be fired. He wants to fight. I’m sorry, but someone at his position should have to curb their actions. Wow, I didn’t like Brando already, but now I really can’t stand him. Rece Davis and Brando aren’t even in the same league. I like Davis, but Brando is a jerk. The caller didn’t represent us well either. Saying no disrepect intended, and then asking him how much football he had played was incredibly disrespectful. However, Brando should be above such a reaction. Wow, Tim. You have no class whatsoever and you aren’t a good broadcaster ever. I’ll tell you that to your face. Are you going to threaten and then pick a fight with me? Come on Mr. Brando. You’ve got to carry yourself better than that. Not everyone is going to like you, your reaction was inexcusable.

by Sparkey on Jan 14, 2009 9:36 AM CST reply actions

Brando's clearly...

…..been taking lessons from the Bill O’Reilly school of debate. And so had the caller. Neither one would shut up! Sounded like a big family Christmas afternoon get-togethers, when two inebriated relatives start arguing about something.

I can't stand...

two people trying to shout each other down. I turn it off. Both were wrong in how they handled it, but I agree that the premise of the question is lame. You don’t have to have played CFB to be an expert on it, much less have an opinion on it. If that were the case, we’d have to shut this site down.

I expect more from a commentator

I could care less about where or if they played football. However, saying he went over the top is an understatement. As far as him being right, we all know that already. Those who haven’t figured something so obvious out aren’t going to learn from the arrogant and snide Tim Brando. I’m appalled by Brando.

by Sparkey on Jan 14, 2009 10:36 AM CST up reply actions

Dumb

the caller was a jackass. I think Brando was right. It is our people at the University dragging us down. NOT TIM FREAKIN BRANDO. If the caller had actually had some points to make to back up his statement it may have been worthwhile, but all he did was stammer when Brando started in on him. Brando may have been over the top, but i bet he gets that crap from all sides.

BTW… the world is full of people who never coached or played college ball, but that doesn’t stop them from telling people how it is or should be. These blogs are full of them. Sportscasters can be jackasses, but I do think that for the most part they know what they are talking about.

ALSO

Hope that kid is ok. Couldn’t really find any info on it. If anyone hears anything please share. Frat folks up at AU can really be a bit douchey at times.

Okay...

You guys might think this is weird, but I just mailed out a letter to the cat. I even enclosed three $1 bills to donate for it’s care. More importantly, I put Track Em Tigers in there, so that we might own the Notasulga Auburn blog market…

"Professional" sportscaster comments?

Tim Brando on the video above:

“Hey pal!”

“Shut the hell up!”

“I could care less about you!”

“If you want to play something besides football, you come see me,…big fella!”

Hmmm….

Then again,...come to think of it...

I wouldn’t classify Finebaum’s show as “professional”,…so maybe it was appropriate afterall,….:-)

Thank you, that’s what I’ve been saying. Brando should be gone right now.

coach/broadcaster

Terry Bowden coached football, but if there is one person in broadcasting I hate hearing the voice of besides McCarver, its Terry Bowden.

The key question...

is not how much football has Tim Brando coaches. The key question is, “How much football has Bobby Lowder coached?”

Lowder has prob coached a couple AU games

and we just didn’t know it. I doubt that he has called as many plays as Jimmy Rein (spelling?), but prob more than Brando

Cool,...just read where the previous COO and now the new interim CEO at Apple,...

while Steve Jobs is out on medical leave,…Tim Cook,…is an Auburn graduate (engineering) and Auburn football fan.

Link: http://blog.al.com/businessnews/2009/01/robertsdale_proud_native_son_i.html

Excerpt:

“He’s known to maintain a grueling work schedule and often begins e-mailing executives at 4:30 a.m., according to a Fortune magazine profile. Cook also is described as a person who likes to keep a low profile, with cycling, the outdoors and Auburn football his only apparent interests outside Apple.”
