Tumbleweeds in Auburn? Call the Ag Dean...

Tumble weeds are a' blowing through college football this week, now that nearly two weeks has elapsed since the final game and all the accolades have been given out. I'm thinking that maybe next year the GMAC bowl may try to move their game to this week in order to garner even more attention to their running way too late in the year for a bowl this insignificant format. You guys check in with us from time to time so we don't think that tumbleweeds are blowing through TET.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was selected as the Paul 'Bear' Bryant College Coach of the year award, guiding the Utes to an undefeated season and a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama. Quite ironically, it's a good thing the award is given out after the regular season, instead of before, lest many might have rightly voted for Nick Saban--the very coach that Whittingham beat in the bowl. Naturally, that would have been in a long standing tradition of championships and awards Alabama won before losing in the bowl game...

This little nugget from last week, too juicy to ignore: Accused by a high school coach of dispicable recruiting practices, South Carolina and the Old Ball Coach himself have been banned from Tucker high, in metro Atlanta, from recruiting any more players. The controversy revolves around the recruitment of Jonathon Davis, a 5'7",205 lb linebacker who was initially offered a schollie by Gamecock assistants Shane Beamer and Ron Cooper. When Cooper has hired away from USC by LSU on January 6th, interest seemed to wane on Davis. His offer was withdrawn by SC soon after, leaving Davis high and dry.

Tucker HC Franklin Stephens had heated phone calls with both Beamer and Spurrier. He said that Spurrier "accepted blame" for the incident, but refused to do anything about it, hence the proclamation that the Gamecocks were "no longer welcome" to recruit Tucker players. Believe it or not, this type of thing seemingly goes on all the time.

So that got me thinking: where else might be some good places to ban Steve Spurrier, past, present and future? A list, from the home office in Atlanta, GA

10) Ron Zook's retirement party...

9) The coloring book section at the Auburn library...

8) Redskins' training camp...

7) Bobby Bowden's funeral...

6) From any more additions to the trophy case at Florida Field...

5) Former Florida QB and Heisman candidate Terry Dean's home...

4) The Back 9 at Augusta...

3) Athens, Georgia, period (unless he promises not to hang half a hunnert again...)

2) Any celebrity golf tournament when Tommy Tuberville is in his foursome...

1) Participating on the sidelines of the SEC championship game ever again...

And lastly, an interesting poll over at sister SB blog Dawg Sports sought to elect a biggest rival for the Dogs. We at Auburn suffer from no misgivings about who our biggest rival is, nor our second biggest. But our third biggest is somewhat ambiguous, especially when you factor in some of our biggest rivalries that the SEC took away on an annual basis, as I do in this weeks poll. I love these polls. They're sooo much more interesting than my Magic 8 ball. "Will Nick Saban leave Alabama for another job anytime soon?"  Answer unclear:  ask again later...

And Richard Pittman of And the Valley Shook, I'd really like to see a poll ranking the top 3 rivalries for the purple Tigers. THAT would be really revealing

3rd biggest for me is UGA

LSU is in my mind the defining game of our season. Every one of my cousins is an LSU student or grad and I’m from NOLA so I care more about that game. Greatest game I ever attended was at LSU “the cigar game” as its come to be known. I was a senior at AU, my cousin a freshman at LSU. Glorious.

We've played Mississippi State....

……Every year since I was born. And they’ve been a pain in the butt, at times, too. In 1963, they cost us an SEC championship in Jacksonville. There were Bob Tyler’s pesky teams in the mid 1970s. Tyler specialized in playing ineligible players. They tied us in 75, and beat us in 76 and 77. The Emory Bellard/John Bond teams of the early 1980s beat us twice. Jackie Sherrill was a REAL nuisance, beating us 1991, and 1992 WITH THE SAME PLAYER. And of course, 4 in a row from 1997-2000. We failed to score on five trips to the red zone, and lost 20-0. Had a slew of punts blocked the next year, and lost 38-21. Followed that stinker, by blowing a 16-0 lead at home with 9 minutes left in the game. In the 2000 defeat, I don’t think Auburn made a first down in the first 3 quarters. And of course, there was getting Croomed in 2007.

…..Those maroons are only 30 minutes from Tuscaloosa, and their shirts are close, too. I can hate ’em almost as much as Bama and Georgia!

Aaargh...

I give away my age when I look at the list and think that the only two choices are Florida and Tennessee. That was historic. In the present day it’s LSU by a landslide.

If you are as old as you say then you should know that Ga Tech was the 3rd biggest.....

UF was a good rival but they were our whipping boy for the better part of 70 years……UT was a big game but was never as big as Ga Tech…..I don’t ever recall wearing pajamas and marching in the streets for UT.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Yep,...I agree,...for "old timers" like myself, too...

I believe Ga Tech is a solid 3rd biggest rival, historically speaking. I won’t ever forget the “Wreck Tech” parades,…guys (mostly drunk) in boxers and girls in pajamas. What a sight,…:-) The “Wreck Tech” parade was always one of the things unique and special to Auburn back when I was there. Since Ga Tech has for the most part disappeared from the schedule,…LSU seems to have taken their place as 3rd biggest rival in modern times.

I didn't forget Tech...

I merely deny their existence because of the way they left the conference. I will acknowledge them upon their return to the fold – and will then move to rid this conference of South Carolina.

by tigernator on Jan 20, 2009 10:33 AM CST up reply actions

lol.....Ga Tech will most likely never....

rejoin the SEC. They are in a more suitable conference for them now anyway. And as far as South Carolina they are arguably about what Tech is as far as football strength goes….I would trade South Carolina for Florida State or Clemson if I wanted a better program than South Carolina. And Ga Tech left the SEC a very long time ago (‘64, they didn’t join the ACC until ‘78)……we didn’t lose their rivalry until the SEC and ACC started scheduling 8 conference games (1987 was the last of the annual rivalry).

by Todd92 on Jan 20, 2009 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

The only ambiguity was in the question for the poll....

not having the question defined left me without a clear choice…..I mean historically its Tech hands down, but through the last 10 years or so it would have to be LSU. Not having a defined question I put it the most logical way I could…….by tenure. Which left me saying that a team we don’t even play on a regular basis anymore is our third biggest rival…..Ga Tech. LSU is certainly the third biggest rivalry for us now but it has only become that in recent years……by the way Richard Pittman proclaims his hatred for all things AU I am guessing that we are at the top of their list or at the very least a close 2nd. Pittman is a funny little dude…..in reading some of his post recently he has the arrogant attitude of a bammer as if LSU has alway been the powerhouse it is today…..he seems to have forgotten the nearly 40 years of irrelevancy his alma matre lived through before Saban brought them into prominence. It will be fun watching Miles bring the program back to mediocrity and hear the bitching and moaning until he is fired.

So Auburn fans...

Bash Bama for living in the past because they like to remember the days when they were great, and now they are bashing LSU fans for living in the present because now we are great?

by LSU Jonno on Jan 20, 2009 8:57 AM CST up reply actions

Not bashing....

just noting one individuals attitude.

Don't take this the wrong way

But your team was far from great this season. Maybe next year will be your year, but this year definitely wasn’t.

by Rene4AU on Jan 20, 2009 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

Haha...

thanks for clearing that up Rene4AU. I was a little confused on how this season went. I think LSU Jonno meant “present” as in last decade and not the “past” as in three decades ago.

by Bob Barker on Jan 21, 2009 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

oh really?

hmmmmmm…….. one season doesn’t define being “great” in my book. If you’ll look back at the post, Jonno said, “now we are great.” As in, the present tense. But, hey if you guys think you’re presently great then more power to you, I guess.

by Rene4AU on Jan 21, 2009 5:30 PM CST up reply actions

I never said one season defines a team as being “great.” We could argue over semantics all day, but we all know that LSU Jonno meant LSU has been “great” in recent history and not this particular season. An 8-5 season would only be “great” for a team like Auburn, but not LSU.

by Bob Barker on Jan 22, 2009 11:33 AM CST up reply actions

Just kidding...

That last sentence was in jest. Auburn is actually my favorite SEC team after LSU and Vandy. I would prefer the LSU-AU games to stay the way they have the last decade with Bama at the bottom.

by Bob Barker on Jan 22, 2009 8:36 PM CST up reply actions

No worries

I actually really like LSU, the only week I don’t cheer for them is AU-LSU week. Other than that, I’m a fan. I’ve got some really great friends who are LSU alum, and I love hanging out with them. Must be a Tiger thing!

by Rene4AU on Jan 23, 2009 1:15 AM CST up reply actions

Since 2001

Since 2001
4 SEC West Titles (not counting ones we tied for but didn’t go to the SECCG, real cool Ole miss 2003)
3 SEC titles
2 NC’s
and 1 overall #1 NFL draft pick

One season doesn’t define being great? Then one season doesn’t remove you from greatness…
I stand by my “now we are great” statement.

by LSU Jonno on Jan 23, 2009 8:10 AM CST up reply actions

Well...

…the third biggest historical is GT, while the current is LSU. That’s why I voted for Tennessee…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Jan 20, 2009 12:21 PM CST reply actions

I refuse to vote for Tennessee for anything......

other than most inbred fanbase. Unless you count hottest coaches wife as voting for UT.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Dude

I am not a Tennessee fan man, but you’re usually more classy than statements like them having the most inbred fanbase.

by Sparkey on Jan 20, 2009 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

Didn't mean to darken your opinion of me.....

but I have had a particular disdane and critical opinion of UT fans in general since sitting in the middle of a block of them at the SEC championship game in 1997, as well as observing the behavior of many of their fans both before and after the game…….they proved to be as obnoxious as any fan base and more than most, and were the epitome of “country come to town”. I was left with the impression that a large number of them didn’t know how to act in public. However, the inbred remark was somewhat “tongue in cheek”, with some admitted stereotyping as the basis.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Jan 20, 2009 1:19 PM CST up reply actions

It's funny that you say that about UT...

I always thought UT fans were pretty cool until I talked to many of them at the SECCG in ‘07. I can’t tell you how many times I heard “LSU doesn’t deserve to be here”, “UT should be playing UGA for the SEC Championship” and so on.

I didn’t quite know how to answer them other than with a blank stare.

‘07 was also my first run in with Miss St. fans and I’ve got to say they were quite a bit more hostile than I expected as well. Part of that probably had to do with the fact that I was sitting in their student section, but still it’s freaking State!

I’ve come to realize that every school is obnoxious in its own way. Just depends on the magnitude of the game, historical bad blood, and the amount of alcohol involved.

by LSU Jonno on Jan 20, 2009 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

I sat in the Law School Block of Death Valley

with a friend and AU alumni in ’93 and had a great time. Not a single problem as Bowdens Tigers dismantled Hallmans Tigers……went out after the game with a bunch of them and partied until the wee hours. Never encountered a single A-hole that evening…..was treated the way I have always tried to treat visitors to AU.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Jan 20, 2009 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

Of course the simple fact,...

that the UT fans were not bright enough to figure out that if UGA was in the SEC championship game then UT wouldn’t be, speaks volumes in itself. Don’t you think lol.

Todd...

may have very well been sitting in JH on that horrible day in 1980 when the Vowels came to Auburn for the very first time and blanked us 42-0. That could leave a bad taste in your mouth for decades…

I’m proud to say that I’ve been to 3 Wreck Tech pajama parades…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Jan 20, 2009 1:53 PM CST up reply actions

LSU Jonno won't like this...

The worst fans that I ever dealt with when I worked at the Heart of Auburn Hotel right across the street from Jordan Hare Stadium were beyond a shadow of a doubt, LSU fans. True, all of them had their rough fans, but none of them behaved as badly as the LSU bunch. Even the “little old” couples if you will were rude and vulgar and snide. The younger ones were only worse, though. In fact, I had one pull out a knife over the fact that he didn’t get two parking spaces with his one room. I realize you cannot place judgement on any group of fans by your only experience with them, but every LSU fan I met during that stint was at least rude at best and dangerous at worst. You got the feeling they took pride in destroying the city while they were there. That’s not the way all of the LSU fans are, just the ones I’ve dealt with personally.
