Reuban Randle, Come on in take your shoes off....stay a while.

Yep.  Gus Malzahn has done what they said wouldn't happen he has RR coming to take a visit on January 30th.  Take note that this is the same weekend that Kendall Kelley and Clint Moseley are taking their visits....as has been reported by Mr. Goldberg.  Moseley has been quoted as saying he was taking his visit on the 30th to help recruit KK and now it seems he will be courting RR as well.  I hope Mr. Moseley has some sales talent and can show these young men that he is the real deal....and that they would benefit coming to AU.  Regardless of whether either RR or KK commits to AU this is an excellent example of the job that the coaches are doing on selling AU to prospects.  Kudos go out to the coaches for aiming high and being relentless on the hunt for top talent to come to AU.  It will be an interesting next few days....I hope that the rumors about Johnnie Farms ditching his plans to visit AU are untrue or if they are that he reconsiders and makes the trip, AU could use him and he would be a fine addition to the Tigers. Regardless.....so far I would have to give Coach Chizik an "A" to this point in everything he has done. War damn Eagle.

What?

An A? For what? No one of significants has signed! Have we fallen so far that we are going to be happy if 3 star athletes will come just for a visit?

by Titusville Tiger on Jan 20, 2009 5:50 PM CST reply actions

I agree with an A

Here is why. Because with the sh**storm that has surrounded Auburn before and after Tub’s departure, and then with Chizik’s hire, Chizik has managed to assemble a very good staff and has had people looking at Auburn that never considered them before. That is one hell of a feat. Demi-God Saban over at Alabama wasn’t able to do that before his first season but he was able to do a great job of bringing in a talented class the next season. If Chizik can manage a top 20 class in both ESPN and Rivals this year, he deserves an A+++++++ for it.

The issue that I see with Chizik is going to not be next year, it will be the year after. If you look at the talent level this year it should be fine, but last year’s recruiting class has now dwindled to damn near nothing left of it. The talent after next season, if Chizik can’t put a solid class together this year, is going to be the lowest it has been since Bowden left.

Thanks...

for the downer Titusville….that just completed my day. Getting the guys there is a tough job to start with….getting them to sign is another issue all together. With the 3-4 star talent we have had in the past we have been able to compete much better than most teams could have with the same talent…so if we get one or two of these guys it would be a huge boost….we won’t get all of them.

By the way; here is a good site for everyone to poke in on from time to time. Jay Tate does a great job covering the recruits, especially during the deadtime.

The fact that the #1 WR recruit is coming to visit Auburn is a step back in the right direction. When was the last time a top 5 WR came to Auburn? And RR is not a 3 star he is a 5 star recruit. Last weekend we had multiple 4 stars visit and went away quite happy. A 4 star from Texas is close to commiting and 4 star from Texas put us at the top of his list. I walked by Jordan Hare last Sat night at it was lit up for the recruits, they loved it. WDE…

Moseley , is a great kid

I recently passed through Leroy , Al. and met Moseley, He is a great kid , with a very level head. I also was able to watch him several times during the year. This guy has the goods. He has the skills as a player, and also the personality to boot. A few minutes with Moseley and you realize he is genuine. I think the other recruits will find his personality , and his approach to the game overwhelming. But what was most impressive is when I approached him about rumors he was going to Alabama to play baseball. Quickly he stated that Auburn was the only one he was talking to. We are definately heading in the right direction!

What about Cotton?

I said it as soon as Cotton de-committed that I would much rather have Moseley than Cotton anyway. The only reason Moseley isn’t rated higher is because of where he went to school, if the school were bigger, he would be a 4 star at least. If he comes to Auburn and puts on about 15 to 20 pounds, he is ready to play and I hope he does. I have never really been sold on Burns, mainly for the fact that I felt he has been slow to learn the offenses put in front of him. Last year he might not have had the benefit of a good coach to him, but as a freshman, he had a year and he managed to learn about 5 plays.

I hope that if Caudle isn’t game ready now and Todd isn’t 100%, that it will be Trotter and Moseley at the helm learning next year. Even if Todd and Caudle are game ready though, do we want to invest next season, a season that is going to be rebuilding whether we admit it or not, on two quarterbacks that will be gone after next year? I think we need to look to the year after next, especially in terms of skill players.

by Mattco on Jan 20, 2009 8:34 PM CST up reply actions

Still say its too early to pass judgement on Burns....

last season was a debaucle from the get go as far as QB’s were concerned…..Franklin wasn’t going to put forth the effort on him. After Franklin left Burns showed marked improvement even with what I think we all agree was a less than great QB coach in Ensminger. The Year before he was a true freshman and had the redshirt stripped for the Miss. State game…..after which Cox played much better due to the O-line gelling and the running game coming around. Give Burns time and see what happens……he has all the physical skills if he can be coached.

true

I think its crazy for anyone to say what Burns can really do based on this last clusterfluck of a season we had.

Dude!!!

Kodi Burns SUCKS!!! He is the most talent-lacking quarterback that Auburn has had since Jeff “F-ing” Klein!!! Please the jury has come and gone with that kid. He stinks.

I'm not sure Arie

I think he wasn’t coached. I’d like to see him after some real coaching, and pass judgment then.

You can't get a hit if you don't swing the bat.

Recruiting is as much about perception as it is about anything else. Getting kids like Randle to come visit this year (even though AU has a snowball’s chance in hell of landing him) and getting good reviews from him in an interview will pay huge dividends in the future.
Baby steps like these this year, followed by evidence of improvement on the field next season could really set up a huge recruiting year for AU in the 2010 class, with promises of early playing time. By then Bama won’t be able to promise as much playing time as AU will, and viola the pendulum of state supremacy has swung back in AU’s favor.

At least that’s how I hope it goes.

by LSU Jonno on Jan 20, 2009 9:16 PM CST reply actions

Why thank your Jonno....

but I still say we’re not as far behind talent wise as most outsiders think we are…..You are correct in your statements about the attention from top talent that may not commit though, it will pay dividends provided the team doesn’t have another meltdown in ’09. And you never know some of these recruits could come in and fall in love with the place…..after all the facilities are top notch, the campus is fantastic, the coeds are suuuuweeet, the town is small yet progressive, and the night life is definitely there. I am not ready to relinquish State Supremacy after one (albeit horrible) season….and yes even with the beating we took in the Iron Bowl.

I keep trying to tell bammers you don’t really gain retribution from a 6-0 run with one beat down and no championship to show for it. But that’s like trying to convince a cow to stop mooing. They don’t really understand you, and even if they did, they don’t know how to do anything else anyway.

I think they will come to realize just how special......

their ’08 season was by halfway through ’09. I see a huge helping of humble pie in their not so distant future.

by Todd92 on Jan 20, 2009 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

I think....

Bama will do well to go 9-3 next season and 8-4 is more probable….maybe worse if they can’t get the chemistry right in the O-line. Bama also was exposed with UF and Utah being able to throw and run to the flats and the outside lanes. They didn’t have the speed at DE and it doesn’t bode well that they will be either playing freshman there to get the speed or upperclassman that don’t have the speed.

Now with Willis Gone...

How do you think we’ll come out in all of this Todd92? You get upset sometimes, but for the most part you know your stuff. So, what do you think?

by Sparkey on Jan 22, 2009 12:31 AM CST up reply actions

Right now its hard to say.....

Ted Roof has always coached linebackers everywhere he has been as a coordinator….that may have had some part in Willis’ decision to leave. I am shocked and baffled by all of this…….its late in the recruiting process to go find another top notch recruiter position coach. The timing of all of this only compounds the frustration and confusion. I do know this James Willis just burned his bridge with AU……he will never be welcome again and he should know this…..you just don’t do this to your Alma Matre. We will see just how good a recruiter Chizik and remaining staff are…….they will have to seal the deal on about 10 Willis commits. We will know pretty much how bad this has hurt AU at least on recruiting by the middle of next week.

Good points Todd...

…especially about Roof coaching linebackers. I know we should be OK with him being able to get the coaching job done. I just hope we can not only hold on to the Willis recruits but get someone to be able to step up to be a great South Alabama recruiter. We did OK before Willis had Mobile on his duty list but now in the future we’ve got to go against the established ties that he has in that area. Lets get those 10 and then start working that fertile soil for next year !

Like I said

This year, we are not as far behind on talent as most think. But depth becomes a real issue after next year if we can’t assemble a solid class now, at least good enough to provide solid backup talent. It has been two years since a new offensive lineman stepped onto campus and that hurts. If we end up with Petey Smith, I think we have plenty of talent at linebacker and if we get Tana Patrick also then we have a ton of talent at linebacker. Defensive line shouldn’t be an issue this year. Running back is thinning more than usual but we are still about 3 deep. We have a lot of quarterbacks but are any of them going to step up?

We have a lot of question marks that certainly need answering, but I think this season has enough talent to play on the field with everyone on our schedule. The only team that is probably a good bit more talented than us on our schedule is LSU. They just weren’t able to work together last year, much like Auburn.

Maybe someone could shed some light on this if I'm wrong, but...

Clint Moseley is a duel threat quarterback who, at least in high school, had no check down abilitly, so it the first guy wasn’t open, he ran. Now, I realize the AU coaching staff can turn him into whatever they want him to be, within reason, but knowing his tendancies now, wouldn’t you think KK and RR would want to hear that they are coming to a school where they are receiving passes from a pocket passer and feel that they will get targeted 5+ times a game? I just don’t think that Moseley is the guy to talk to them.

Well...

In high school he didn’t have to check down and he has athletic ability. He may indeed possess the ability to check down, but he just didn’t have to do it in high school. I cannot really see recruits talking to each other as a bad thing either.

Recruiting So Far..

Agree that recruiting is going well as can be expected. I know it can be disheartning (sp?) to look at the recruiting top 20 and not see Auburn, however, that can be attributed to the previous administration (aka coaching staff) as being “blase…blase” overconfident. Tubs did a fine job in establishing Auburn as a premier program, however he became a more “steady as she goes” captain that allowed other institutions to overtake him. Chiz and crew will bring a fresh approach. I applaud their shooting for the stars approach and even if they do not get these 5 star guys, at least the gave it a shot. Tubs was happy with 3 and 4 stars and seemed to do okay with that approach, however if you go to Rivals and go back as far as 2002, you will see the 5 star recruits and where they are now. The stars were all in alignment when Tubs got Carnell, (who was a C-hair from going to Alabama). If Auburn can get the QB Rollison from Sulphur Springs,Texas, then look out…..AU will be back. I think QB Mosely signee is a good QB but compared to the quality of Texas football recruits, he is merely average. Keep faithfull and “dance with the girl you brought to the dance because you aint going home with nobody else.” WAW EAGLE….HooverBuc4AU

I don't think you can make those statements....

after all the recruiting class was a top 5 or top 10 class before Tubervilles firing and subsequent decommits. I am not going to bash Tuberville just because thats the easiest place to point a finger. Nor do I think that Moseley should be evaluated at this time. Its a bit early to say how good a recruit Moseley may be…..or Rollison for that matter. I think the logic is there for Rollison to be the real deal based on his evaluation…..but I have seen too many “real deals” become busts. Moseley by all accounts may be a big time sleeper who didn’t get the kudos from the national recruiting gurus because of the level of competition that he faced….time will tell. And yep like I said Chizik gets an A for the effort so far……would have been an A+ if not for the Willis debaucle (although a lot of people have been pointing a finger at Jacobs and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is his snafu).

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
