Shocker: James Willis Heading To Tuscaloosa

Apparently, in the merry-go-round that is the SEC West coaching staffs, linebackers coach James Willis has taken a job at Alabama.  I would think that a little money and a new title wouldn't draw a man to his alma mater's number one rival.  Good job James Willis, you have now broken the mold.

Here's what Willis said:

"I'm excited about the opportunity to come and work with Coach Saban at the University of Alabama," said Willis. "He is one of the best defensive coaches in the game and this is a chance to gain some great experience and learn from the best. You don't get many chances like that in the coaching business. When you combine that opportunity with the history and tradition at Alabama, it was a decision that was best for me personally as well as professionally. I know my wife and the kids are as excited as I am to join Coach Saban's staff."

Here's what Nick Saban said:

I'm extremely pleased and happy to have James join our staff," said head coach Nick Saban. "We tried to go out and hire the best possible coaches when this process started and I'm confident we've done that. James has everything you would want in terms of finding an outstanding coach and an outstanding recruiter with a lot of enthusiasm and intensity. He's played in the SEC and the NFL, and grew up and coached in the state of Alabama so he will be able to contribute in many areas and make a positive impact as we continue to build a championship program here at Alabama. We're glad to have the Willis family here with us at the University of Alabama."

Wow...

You know, Willis has betrayed Auburn completely. What a knife in the back!! This stings. Willis, Chizik really wanted to keep you. And you just up and leave during rough waters? I am surprised, shocked, and hurt on this one. Wow Willis. You are Benedict Arnold in my book. You have showed the greatest disloyalty you can show in the coaching field.

This is unbelievable

Can you blame him?

Auburn loyalty aside, working for a proven Saban system with a higher salary or a 5-19 Chizik system? I think everyone would do what Willis did in his situation. Everyone with half a brain, that is.

by brandonh on Jan 21, 2009 5:55 PM CST reply actions

You do realize

that Willis is an ex-Auburn player right? Well, that and your apparently an idiot if you think that doesn’t mean anything.

by Mattco on Jan 21, 2009 5:59 PM CST up reply actions

Obviously...

it didn’t mean anything. He had his family and career interests in mind. I’m sorry it hurts, but you can blame Chizik/Tuberville/Jacobs for his departure. Do you think he would have stayed if Tuberville hadn’t left? Of course.

I would direct my anger in the appropriate direction if I were you. Willis had his interests in mind no matter how much of a “traitor” you may think he is.

by brandonh on Jan 21, 2009 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

The issues that nearly all Auburn fans will have with this is...

that he is an alumni of Auburn and he went to the biggest rival of that school. If he went to Mississippi State as one of Mullen’s assistants, most likely no hard feelings, even if he went to Georgia Tech, more than likely no hard feelings. The issue that it was Alabama is the biggest thing here.

by Mattco on Jan 21, 2009 6:43 PM CST up reply actions

Also that he recommitted (for lack of a better word) to Auburn after the Chizik hire

The problem is "Auburn loyalty aside"

I have no problem with our coaches leaving to take a better job or one that pays better. It may sting at first, but I get over it. The fact that he went to Auburn and has been coaching here for awhile, and that he’s leaving for our biggest rival is what is so mind-boggling and angering. You can’t just toss “Auburn loyalty aside.” Imagine Eisenhower deciding to go run the USSR in the 50s. Would you say “American loyalty aside, working for an up-and-coming Communist system (blah blah blah)”? No!

Yes you can blame him.

Wow, like you wouldn’t have jumped all over a former Alabama football player who jumped ship away from Schula or Dubose. And wow, what lack of Class Saban has shown. Obviously, Saban will do anything and everything in takes to win. There’s a GREAT possibility he’s cheating if he’s pulling stunts like this. I have to wonder if the Alabama Recruits at Linebacker didn’t have a clue that this was going to happen. You cannot say for sure they didn’t. This is ridiculous. Dick Saban shows his true colors.

by Sparkey on Jan 21, 2009 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree with you on Saban

Are you saying that our assistants are off-limits for Alabama, and theirs are off-limits for us? At the end of the day, it’s still a business. You get the best you can get. Players, coaches, the whole works. It is still painful that he left, but it’s not because Saban’s been cheating or anything.

I'm not trying to add fuel...

but this is laughable. Saban WILL do anything it takes to win. Of course, that is why he makes $4m+ a year. This meager “rivalry” means nothing when it comes to careers and loyalty and all that BS you assume that coaches care about.

You hate a guy for trying to assemble a great staff? You need to thank Willis for what he did for your program and wish him well.

Stop letting your emotions overtake you.

by brandonh on Jan 21, 2009 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

Look buddy

You’re wrong. YOU ARE WRONG. Obviously you know nothing about the game of football and the loyalty you form to a school and the people involved, and obviously you know nothing about the iron bowl to call it “meager”

There are some things in this world more important than money and prestige and I think Loyalty is one of them, I’m starting to lose faith in people with this move. People will do whatever it takes to get their money, get higher on the totem pole, no matter who they betray to get there, what are people thinking these days? This can’t be possible, James Willis didn’t just leave us for Alabama with 2 weeks to signing day, really?

James Willis is a traitor and he’s no longer welcome at AU, Good Riddance you asshole

by auau on Jan 21, 2009 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

Not coming to add to the pissing contest, but...

you want to talk about loyalty? How about Willis still being on the recruiting trail while all the other assistants were updating their resumes after Tubs got fired? The VAST majority of the 10, or so, recruits y’all still had committed when Cheez-it arrived can be attributed to Willis. And what does he get for his troubles? A pink slip and a farewell. And y’all expect him to be “loyal”? Why be loyal to anyone or anything if they aren’t willing to reciprocate?

by Sparkey on Jan 21, 2009 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

Are you referring to Lance Thompson?

If you are talking about Thompson leaving for Tennessee, most Alabama fans were pretty damn mad about that. Imagine if he had played for Alabama and then deserted you a few weeks from signing day in the midst of an already chaotic offseason.

And then imagine if lots and lots of douchebag Auburn fans (this is an analogy to all the douchebag Alabama fans here now) went over to Rollbamaroll and started talking trash to you guys. That would probably make you kick a dent in the side of your trailer no?

by Mattco on Jan 21, 2009 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah Lance Thompson

Some Bama fans were mad, but most of us were like “Wy the Hell would he WANT to do that” Leaving a great team with a great coach for an unsteady UT with a crappy season. Yeah, I get that you guys hate Willis right now, but I’m not coming over here being a douchebag, nor am I talking trash. I wish you guys luck most of the time.

by rolltidefromaz on Jan 21, 2009 8:32 PM CST up reply actions

Dude...

You’re being ridiculous. First of all, Auburn is not 5-19 under Chizik — we are 0-0. You can’t compare AU with Iowa State. NO COMPARISON. Secondly, there is NO amount of money that would ever make me choose “that other school” over AUBURN. Not in this lifetime. Willis is a traitor and I hope he gets to enjoy a nice big L at the end of the season. WAR EAGLE!!!

What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended u.a.t.).

by AUshorecm on Jan 21, 2009 11:33 PM CST up reply actions

I can't blame for wanting to better himself or accepting morey money but

I can and certainly do blame Nick Saban for a Huge Lack of Ethics. It’s within 2 weeks of signing day and Saban pullsthis crap. What a SCUMBAG!!!

It kind of reminds me of Bear Bryant’s shannigans that he pulled with signing all of the good players so that no one else could beat him.

While these actions may not officially break any laws or rules. They show a complete lack of class under the circumstances.

bwahahaha.

because he landed good players you hate him? do you hate others that work harder than you and make more money too? lack of class because he worked he butt off to recruit great talent. wow..just wow.

by brandonh on Jan 22, 2009 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

So you're gonna tell me...

That if Charlie Strong was interested in coming to Auburn today to replace Willis (I realize he’s also DC, but just follow me here), Cheez-it would wait until after NSD to hire him just to be courtious to Florida and the fanbase there? HELL NO! You and I both know Cheez-it and Jay Jacobs would fly out to Gainsville and pack his house up for him so that he could start working by Monday.

Don’t get all high an mighty on me here. You don’t think the AU administration is pulling their hair out trying to find a replacement for Willis right now? They may not get him till after NSD, but it won’t be because they have respect for other teams.

Why are we mentioning the Bear anyway?

You know, Auburn people complain about hearing about Bear Bryant and then we bring him up first on our own site. I really wish we would let a coach that has been gone for so long rest on both sides. He was just a man, not a god. As far as whether or not he was fair, I think he’s gone and the debate at least when it comes to present day occurences in sports is not really an appropiate discussion. The issue here is about Saban and Willis and Jay Jacobs. This has nothing to do with Bear Bryant whether good or bad.

As much as I hate to say this......

it looks like Chiziks first action as Head Coach……immediately firing all assistants with no evaluation has bit him and us in the ass. Only after several days was Willis rehired…..during that time I’m sure there was a lot of stress. I don’t blame Willis for leaving…..I blame Chizik for that…..but I do blame Willis for going to Bama and forcing me to listen to shit stains like Brandonh gloat over it on our blog site.

I will hand you this...

You didn’t really gloat but you did add fuel to the fire after saying you weren’t trying to do it. I guess it’s akin to something like “No offense but…” You generally offend someone when you state that. I’m not going to curse on here like that, but Saban is a jerk, he doesn’t show class to steal a coach away while he still works for the archrival and played for them. There are some things you just don’t do…things you don’t say…and places you just don’t go to…he went there, said it, and did it. You may be taking some unfair grief from us, but what do you expect after we just lost our linebackers coach, a great recuiter, and a former Auburn Tiger himself. I hope Willis does well, but damn that was a low blow. Anybody would be upset after a development like this when they see their team take such a strike. You know we’re going to be at our worst right now…Don’t walk into a hornets’ nest and expect not to get stung.

Not me anymore. I do feel like this was a deliberate action to Auburn as much as possible. I mean it’s perfect to hurt Auburn on whatever defensive recruits they had. Plus, why now? Why not when Chizik fired everyone from the start “unofficially” and go then. Why two weeks before signing day during a dead period in which this will hold most of the Southern headlines and these young kids will see a coach jumping ship right then. This was cold, calm, and calculated. I’ll give Saban this, it’s a brilliant move but it is completely classless. I mean the timing is way too convienent. Oh well, we’ll just have to start finding a new coach now for our linebackers. And for the record, he isn’t the best recruiter we have. Our new RB coach would hold that title I have to say. Or, for that matter, Trooper Taylor. I cannot see this as anything but deliberate to really devistate Auburn as much as possible.

Jay Coulter

Why now?

Why did Willis do this now? Auburn fans wouldn’t be so angry if this happened last month when Willis had good reason. Hell, he could’ve done this right after Tubberville resigned. I couldn’t hold that against him. However, why now? I mean, it seems that it being done now causes Auburn to have all kinds of issues with recruiting. I don’t know how we’re going to do with this much chaos right before signing day. Damn. This is going to be the biggest blow yet I fear.

by Sparkey on Jan 21, 2009 7:38 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

This was done on purpose by both Willis and Saban.

by Sparkey on Jan 21, 2009 7:10 PM CST reply actions

why?

I have no idea what the inner workings of this staff have been thus far. Maybe Willis thought it wasn’t working out. Maybe he knows more about the administration than I do. I am an Auburn fan and I hate the idea that he is going to our biggest rival, but I don’t believe that what he said is all there is. There has to be more to the story than just “opportunity.”

It’s alarming that the majority of our fan base immediately assumes the worst about the guy. I know the timing couldn’t be much worse, but I don’t see proof his intent was malicious. Let him go. We have a clean break and so far Chizik has hired some pretty outstanding coaches, we’ll get another. Save up this as fuel for next year when we can show him he made the wrong decision.

by mgizmo2005 on Jan 21, 2009 7:44 PM CST reply actions

I wish I could give it the benefit of the doubt...

Well I don't think is an assumption

"Timing"

Im just asking not flamming….so don’t get all pissy.

To me the “timing” was right. A week ago Lance Thompson bails on Bama to go to UT. Willis see’s an opening at Bama, gets an offer, probably what will be decent money, to go coach under a proven defensive minded HC and he accepts the job. So how was this “Timing” inappropriate? Sure it was...but what's the old saying..what goes around comes around..

How long do assistants actually last at Alabama? Not long…He’ll be working his a$$ off now and won’t have the Auburn family screaming to keep him when Nicky is ready for some change or he’s tired of 80 hour work weeks…Nick will toss him like last week’s garbage.
Plus…this is just one more reason to HATE Bamma and what they stand for…things come back around and I am telling you…they can have Willis…He isnt good enough to wipe Chizik’s shoes.
Goodbye and don’t let the door hit your rear end on the way out, buddy!

I don't...

…care what was going on behind closed doors. You don’t just go and take a job with your fiercest rival. Look what happened when Johnny Damon left the Red Sox for the Yankees. It taints everything.

Couldn’t have been a money issue. It takes real deviance to do what Willis did. Plain and simple.

by ArieGold on Jan 21, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply actions

Just an analogy here...

But Johnny Damon was not fired by the Sox despite going above and beyond his job title, then resigned by the Sox, to find he’s still one of the most underpaid players on the team.

Do you think that had he been fired in the first place, that Willis would now be at Bama? I doubt it very seriously. He lived and breathed Auburn University and it showed in his work ethic. And Auburn turns around and craps on him. You’d leave too.

Another thing, I guarantee you it had a little to do with money. He could not have been paid less than what he made last year. $175k. Find me an SEC position coach that make less, and I’ll show you a guy who would leave that program for the next best offer.

Jay Jacobs ...

… strikes again. Word has it Jacobs had Willis repay his severance bonus when he was rehired. After the agony the coaches went through (while still recruiting for Auburn!), that would leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth. I’ll say it again … Jacobs has got to go.

It’s also important to realize Willis was the junior of 3 LB coaches on the staff. You have to wonder if he saw the writing on the wall.

Finally, the tone of his announcement indicates there was definite bad blood. I can’t begin to imagine an Auburn grad saying anything flattering about “tradition” (I can hardly type that without gagging). And, I certainly can’t use it in the same sentence with uat football!

Ever wonder why God painted a beautiful sky blue and a breathtaking sunset orange?

by Tigerz on Jan 21, 2009 8:11 PM CST reply actions

That does not condone what he did

I cannot stand Jacobs anymore than you I would imagine. However, he might have done us a favor by getting rid of someone so capable of doing something so dasterdly.

by Sparkey on Jan 21, 2009 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

Seriously guys, it's a business...

I’ll assume most of us have career jobs, or will soon (if you’re still in college). Let’s say The Company gives you a job while you’re still in college, assures you of a full time job when you get out, and they’ll pay you $50k. After a few years, post graduation, at The Company, you are settled in, no raise in the past year, not much opportunity to move up in the company if you stay, and actually, you’ve been on the chopping block a time or two because times were slow, and you were low man on the totem pole. The Company’s closest competition has an opening with the exact same job title and description that you have, but for double the money. Do you stay at The Company because they hired you right out of college and showed you the ropes, so to speak? Or do you go where the money is?

Now add to your scenario......

that the company you’re leaving is your families company and you are going “cross town” to work for their biggest competition……..you think daddy is gonna be happy? I agree that Chizik snubbed him and Jay Jacobs like an ass asked for his severance pay back when he was rehired……that would all make me mad as hell. BUT there is no way I leave before getting started good to go to the instate rival of my Alma Matre…..if I want to look elsewhere then I either do it after giving the new boss a shot or I go out of area…..Willis new how this would look and took the easy way out……his players that he coached and recruited found out from the media, I thought he was more of a man than that.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Jan 22, 2009 5:07 PM CST up reply actions

not sure about this one either

If he was retained, then he shouldn’t gotten a severance package like the others, he gets a job. Yes he was fired, but was retained a few days later, this isn’t uncommon. I can’t believe that Auburn paid the severances before they decided who they were retaining anyway, it might have been part of the deal they struck to keep them recruiting.

by Mattco on Jan 21, 2009 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

It's another bizarre twist...

…..and probably one of those closed door episodes we Auburn fans are so familiar with. Goodbye, James Willis. Don’t let the door hit your backside on the way out. Oh, and take your linebacker philosophy with you. We’ll find somebody who can fit the middle linebacker into the B-gap!

…..Since there seems to be some confusion, and the word IS part of my screen name:

Rain: Water that falls from the sky.
Rein: A rope used to steer horses
Reign: to rule over.

…..I figure that what will “rain” at Bryant-Denny is cups. We’ve seen that before.

Sure it hurts. But Chiz has brought in some studs in the assistant coaching area. We’ll be ok. We’ll jack someone’s LB coach and they can be mad at us. It’ll be fun!

College Football

is a big boy sport. UT takes Bama’s coach, Bama take AU’s coach, maybe AU should take one from UT. However (and I am a Bama Fan) Auburn should not be that upset with Wilis. First Chizik fired the whole staff which is fine but he (and you all) should expect no loyalty since none was showed. Willis just saw the truth—there is no loyalty in College Football. It is eat or get eaten.

Think about this. If Bama beats Auburn next year, people will be on Chizik, and what will he do? Fire some of the staff as in Willis!! So Willis just decides to go where he is more likely to be able to jump to a better deal in a few years rather then be unemployed or have to take a job at E.Mich.

by 5026 on Jan 21, 2009 9:33 PM CST reply actions

No.

Most likely scenario is he gets kicked to the curb at the end of next season by your dear Tricky Nick. So, he’ll then be unemployed and looking for a job at E. Mich as you suggested. Did you actually watch our linebackers in action this season? Hell, you (bammers) can have him. Good riddance and good luck.

by TopDaddy on Jan 22, 2009 10:22 AM CST up reply actions

And if we did,

end up on the short end, I would expect to see more Tiger fans laughing at us, with more comments like “you guys got a loser coach” or “yall can have him.” It seems like too many AU fans are pissed at Willis, instead of at Chizik. I hope the guy can coach, but if he justs gets us more four and five stars, he’ll be worth the money. We’re not even having to double his paycheck like UT has been doing.

by rolltidefromaz on Jan 21, 2009 10:18 PM CST reply actions

Like I said

we’ll all just have to wait and see what materializes. Like JD said, although this is unpleasant for AU fans, it’s not the end of the world as far as recruiting goes for us. And, you know how I feel about the coaching aspect of the whole thing. It’s not (for me at least) that he left, it’s the timing. But, oh well!

by Rene4AU on Jan 21, 2009 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

I'll admit

the timing does suck. I was thinking the same thing when Thompson left. But really, don’t most of these kids already know where they’re going? Isn’t the last two or three weeks about the free food and ass kissing?

by rolltidefromaz on Jan 21, 2009 10:46 PM CST reply actions

Doesn't Matter

Willis can leave. Who needs him? Chizik has already proven he can hire GREAT assistants. We’ll get someone who’s far better for the job, and we’ll be better for it. We WILL be back, make no mistake. WDE!

What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended u.a.t.).

by AUshorecm on Jan 21, 2009 11:37 PM CST reply actions

If the ball boy jumped ship like this I'd be pissed.

It just so happens that Willis is a great recruiter. Sure, he has his x’s and o’s problems, but he is he a great recruiter I cannot take that from him. However, we’ve gotten really good recruiters on the plains these days and we can get another great assistant along with a great defensive backs coach. In the end, and damn do I hate to use this term, it may indeed be a blessing in disguise. Though, this year our recruiting must be shot. I cannot see how it isn’t. And no, these kids haven’t always made up their minds. In fact, they often change their mind right at the last second. Well, this won’t help Auburn get anybody really quick. Wow Saban, you will never cease to amaze me in your classless nature. Willis, I expected better from you. You were wanted here and the fans loved you. We screamed on your behalf to be kept and you do this? We were loyal to you. Regardless of whatever else, the Auburn family WAS loyal to you. However, you betrayed us. Though, maybe one day, we can soften this blow.

by Sparkey on Jan 22, 2009 12:27 AM CST reply actions

Auburn will get through this

If I were an Auburn fan, as are many of my friends, I would be hurt with this move. But let’s face it, college football is a business; it is not personal……or so said Tom Hagen. I think gone are the days of school loyalty and devotion. We can love and idealize our schools and players, but in the end they will make the choices that best benefit them and their families (Case in point with Stafford and Moreno gone we will be lucky to win 9 games next year, especially with our tough schedule). I don’t like it, but it is reality.

Auburn will get through this period. You have good fans and are a class program. Try to stay positive. Good luck (except against us). Remember these wise words from Patrick Fain Dye….“Well hindsight is 50/50”…….. :)

Dye said that? Brilliant.

But seriously, you’re injecting rational thought into a group thats not very rational right now. They lost their popular successful coach, they got this 5-19 guy in there now and he’s running off coaches and recruits alike. Honestly I don’t blame them for being emotional.

You have 2 types of position coaches

on your staff- those who know how to coach football and those who recruit. If someone knows both it is rare. Bama lost a recruiter who was not that great a football coach. It left us short a recruiter—enter Willis the best recruiter available and he covered Mobile which is where we had lost a recruiter and a very important area for Bama.

And why was Willis available? See the mess at Auburn and the way Cheeze-it fired the whole staff up front. Plus we probably offered him some more money. For Willis it was a no brainer.

Why can’t Auburn folks figure this is out?

And the timing? Well that all started with UT. What was Bama supposed to do just wait around? Now if Auburn’s HC is smart he will grab a recruiter quick.

But Saban being a cheater or this being a conspiracy is crazy.

by 5026 on Jan 22, 2009 1:38 PM CST reply actions

There

are alot of aspects that make this worse that it actually looks on the surface:

1. The fact that he’s an alum and former player
2. The fact that he was/is their best recruiter
3. The fact that the Mobile/Baldwin area is a very hot part of the state, and AU was already kind of getting owned down there
4. The fact that this already demonstrates poor methods and decision making by Gene Chizik, and his failure has caused swift and direct consequences.

Sorry im getting a little tired of some barner comments

but im sure you guys are tired of us too…

Yeah his point was that UT started it all by grabbing Thompson from us, which made Saban go after Willis. Thompson was our guy for Mobile and Willis was a great name to replace him with. And thats just the point. All this talk about conspiracy is just dumb. Saban needed a guy to recruit the mobile area…and Willis was his man. Willis was probably pissed over the Tub’s situation and decided that if AU wasn’t going to be loyal to him, why should he be loyal to them. Everything else being said about the situation is piss and vinegar.

And yeah calling you dumb and an idiot was stupid and retardish of me. And you are right…I am better than that.

Uh...if Raymond Cotton ain't coming to AU then...

who really cares if Willis leaves? All I’ve gotten out of Willis is some crappy linebacker play and some three star recruits and a de-committing QB. Have I missed something? Its not like there is a slew of great recruits coming to town because of Willis. I’m very disappointed that he jumped ship to the Rollin Turd, but there is no accounting for taste.

If Ray Cotton hadn’t said that letting Willis go made him re-think his commitment, would the outcry for his retention have been so loud? I don’t think so. And if Ray doesn’t want to learn from Gus Malzahn….if that means nothing to him….hey, good luck Ray, I don’t think you have your priorities straight.

Bottom Line….Willis didn’t produce results on the field or on the trail. He may have BEEN one of our better recruiters but he definitley wasn’t once the new regime was assembled.
Good Luck James, enjoy Tuscaloosa and coach Satan.

And if the sun doesn't come up tomorrow...

Then screw you sun, we’ll get another sun somewhere…

Seriously, if everyone had your “screw you if you don’t like us, we’ll just go get a better you” attitude, your program would be in major disarray.

And concerning Willis: First off, I don’t have a list of the recruits that remained committed after Tubs’ firing, but if you get any production out of those 10-12 guys over the next 5 years, it’s Willis you can thank. Second, you expect Willis to go to one of the major hotspots of the southeast and recruit up against Bama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and tell those recruits to come play for a program that is in the shape that AU is currently in? That’s not an easy task. Cheezit may prove me wrong, but that’s the key, he’s got to prove he’s a good coach that will take his program to higher things before he gets big recruits. They don’t just fall into your lap when you have a losing season.
