Holy WTF Batman! Gulley commits and ESPN hates him.
Ok. Let me get this straight, Gulley commits to Auburn and ESPN absolutely hates him. He is rated as a 3 star recruit according to Rivals.com and a 67, yep a 67, on ESPN.com. Take a gander at this kid's numbers:
-31 touchdowns in 11 games.
58 carries for 1162 yards, a 20 yard average.
-17 catches for 543 yards, a 32 yard average.
-6 kickoff returns for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns, almost 41 ypr.
-5 punt returns for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns, almost 41 ypr again.
Outside these ridiculously gaudy numbers, he also had 48 tackles, 9 sacks and two picks as a free safety.
How is this kid rated so poorly? I don't care if he is playing on the peewee B team as an 18 year old, these numbers are sick. He averaged about 35 yards everytime he touched the ball all year. Can anyone explain this to me? He is being looked at to play slot receiver and at 5'11 and 185 pounds, he could be pretty dangerous at slot.

Well
ESPN doesn’t hate him. They’re just not as high on him as the others. The fact that he’s 5’11 (that’s shorter than me!) and doesn’t have a set position might factor into his low grade.

He is small
And, his 40 yard dash speed probably isn’t 4.3 or 4.2. I mean it might be the snailish 4.4 or 4.5 even. I mean, that’s really slow right? 5’11 and 185 lbs., of course he isn’t big enough to play in division I football. Obvioulsy, his body won’t take the beating very well of playing in the SEC. Nobody has even been small and been good at the WR position correct? I mean don’t you have to be 6-4 or 6-5 to be above a three star recruit? Wes Welker isn’t any good for the New Englad Patriots. Plus, didn’t he play for Texas A&M? I’m not sure on that one, but I’m sure he sucked there completely like he is now for the Patriots. Wayne Chrebet was never any good either. Oh yeah, I almost forgot about Marvin Harrison. He’s never been any good at WR for the Colts? You have to be at least 6-4 for ESPN to like you. It’s in their employee handbook.
Numbers like that don't lie.
To me, those type of statistics without seeing any film footage of him playing means he has great vision. He knows how to let things develop around him and I would imagine he has incredible explosion into high gear when he needs it. You don’t just get numbers like that by being blind and slow. So what if he’s small? We may well indeed have two starting WR’s that are under 6’0. That would be hilarious and awesome if they turn out to do well. If they can get open and catch the ball, they’ll be doing better than what we had last year.
Do you realize
this kid has a 39 inch vertical jump? Much better than my 3 inch vertical.

I'm completely behind him...
Hey, don’t get the wrong idea from me. That whole statement about him being small was total sarcasm. Wes Welker is awesome. He’s one of my favorite players in the NFL. I think small WR’s can be great. It’s just that ESPN can’t get over it’s love affair with really tall receivers. I have nothing against a tall wideout, but forgive me if I can’t help but root for the little guy.
