al.com is reporting that Antonio Coleman is returning.

Antonio Coleman says he's returning to Auburn

by Charles Goldberg, Birmingham News Saturday January 03, 2009, 3:12 PM

Auburn defensive end Antonio Coleman said Saturday he's coming back for his senior season instead of going to the NFL, according to our friends at AuburnSports.com and Inside the Auburn Tigers. That's a recruiting coup for new coach Gene Chizik, who saw defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks say earlier this week he's decided to turn pro, though could change his mind before the Jan. 15 deadline.

Coleman had 46 tackles this season, including 10.5 for losses. Six of those were sacks. Marks started 35 straight games before taking a weekend off against Tennessee-Martin late this season. He had 32 tackles, including 10 for losses. He was ninth on the team in tackles. He has 114 career tackles.

This is good news and I hope that with the depth on the defensive line we have accumulated this year and played a lot this season, I hope that Coleman moves around the defense and plays some outside linebacker, where we don't have a ton of depth and he is projected to play in the NFL.  Not sure if Blackmon's decision really affects us either way since he hasn't played an entire season yet anyway, but Powers would be a big keep just in terms of depth.

Now for the rest of the voids.

Now that our defensive line is about as complete as we are going to get it for next year, what else do we have on the board?

What we need:
1. One quarterback who can take over in two years if needed.
2. Offensive lineman. Do we have anyone on the board at all?
3. Linebackers. If we can grab Petey Smith, which I could see that will help a lot. If we could somehow grab Tana Patrick and Robert Nelson that would be one of the best linebacker classes we have had in a long time.
4. A deep threat. Cameron Kenney would fill this one but Brandon Heavens and and Stallworth could really help with this too. Long shot would be Kendell Kelly, he could give us a good route runner with solid hands.
5. DBs of all flavors. Reggie Taylor will help at corner but we need help with safety now. Darren Myles is a safety that could help us if we can get him. Is there any chance at all of grabbing Kirkpatrick?

If we can sign those we have committed and pick up a few extras on the rest of the road, we will be in great shape.

I don't see...

….Coleman doing the outside linebacker thing. That’s a position that takes a LOT of repetition to do well. On runs to that side, you end up getting the offense’s best blocker trying to take you out. A step or two out of position, and the runner blows by into the secondary. We saw what happened when we stuck Groves out there. If he wasn’t standing there flatfooted, trying to figure whether the runner would bounce inside or out, he was getting lit up on a throwback screen for a touchdown.

……We’re SHALLOW at DE. Goggins? I wasn’t impressed. We had to move McKenzie over, just to have enough bodies. Coleman was hurt a lot. Ditto Antoine Carter. Ditto Jomarcus Savage. Ditto Raven Gray. It was tough scraping three guys together at DE, for each game. Let’s leave Coleman where he plays best.

…..I’m glad he’s back, though. With both tackle starters gone, Coleman’s experience up front will be critical!

We're getting good

Trust me guys, I’m the biggest realist of the bunch. We have talent and we’re getting some good guys. Our defense was very strong until our offense wore them out by being on the field so much during the course of the season. We’re going to be okay. I’m predicting 8-4 honestly. Remember, we had so many games so close. With our guys together, we’re going to be all right. I truly have a good feeling after all of these hires. That’s what I wanted, good and upcoming assistants. That’s exactly what we got. War Eagle!!
