Auburn vs. Arkansas: After Action Report & Look to the Future
Okay, we had yesterday to cry our tears. Hopefully you had a reasonable night’s sleep, took a shower, and had a nice warm breakfast. Now it’s time to clean our gear and get ready for next week’s game against Kentucky.
There are some things we can fix, and some things we just have to try to improve.
Things we must address:
1. Penalties. We had two false start penalties which killed offensive drives. We had several pass interference penalties which helped Arkansas sustain drives and score.
2. Fumbles. Three fumbles absolutely took a knife to our scoring opportunities. Never carry the ball away from your body. This is ball handling 101. And it was surprising that Kodi was not used on that fourth and inches play. Todd has rarely played under center, and has not shown a power running style. This was a situation tailor made for Mr. Burns.
3. Incomplete passes/dropped balls. Sustained drives require making plays like this.
My only other quibble was with the decision to go for two instead of taking the PAT. I can only assume the thought was to make 8 three times to even the score instead of relying on three TDs and a field goal.
We have to accept that our defense is comprised of the personnel that we have. These young men have their skills and their deficits. Can we make a 5 foot 10 guy 6 foot 3? No. Can we make a 180 pound guy weigh 235? Maybe, but not in one season, if you want muscle mass instead of flab. We can strengthen leg muscles. We might even be able to improve acceleration from a dead stop. But those things take time and we’re in the middle of the season which calls for strength and conditioning maintenance, not training for gains.
Now, the good news is that Ole Miss had a day very similar to ours. Also, Georgia looks vulnerable now in a way I would never have suspected. Those are two games we have a better than even chance of winning. Kentucky should be more attainable. And Furman is all but a lock. LSU and the Iron Bowl are still toss ups. I will never give any games away before we play 'em.
I am not going to lapse into despair and declare the sky has fallen, woe is me, our season is over. I am going to say that we had one bad day. A very uncharacteristic bad day. But one bad day is not a trend.

I like, “I will never give any games away before we play ’em” That’s exactly how I look at it. Our talent level was there to win yesterday, we just couldn’t get out of our own way.

NOOOOOO!!!
A Turd insult!!! More devastatng than the loss itself!!!
Auburn faithful please join me in overdosing on Vodka and Barbituates!!!
Goodbye cruel Turd fans!!!
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
Like you were destroyed by UTAH in the SUGAR BOWL last year!!
You ought to know what that feels like…and you were’nt even an inexperienced team with growing pains…You got your EXPERIENCED butt kicked, coached by your EXPERIENCED coach…what excuse do you have for that???
Little Bro…you need to just go worry about your own team…you still have to worry about a repeat of last year…Go back over there to the bammer side and grow your big fat head a little more :)
You STILL haven't jumped in front of a bus?

The team overall is very young right now.
And with youth comes games like this. Yes, we had some experienced players make mistakes yesterday too, but all of that comes with trying to do too much and cover for others’ inexperience. We’ve seen what our offense can and will do once we have all of our pieces in place. That comes with recruiting and just getting kids in there and letting them make mistakes. More talent is coming to the plains. More than we have now, and I really think that is saying something.
The defense will definitley come around. Chizik is not going to allow this team to be without a stout defensive unit. Now whether that comes this year or next year or the next remains to be seen. But we will be back and we will be strong on that side of the ball.
Everyone needs to take a deep breath and remember that this is the first year for this coaching staff and their guys aren’t even on the field yet. Auburn is going places, good places. And I’m excited about what the future holds for this program.

Malzan
I will put money on Malzhan getting a head coaching job this coming year. Malzan is Auburn football right now. I think it would have been wise to hire him as a head coach. Does anybody else think he will stay longer then 2 yrs at the most? Then what happens. Maybe Chizik brings his Iowa St. offense back. Even if that’s the case, his offense just got schooled by the leagues worst defense……. Game on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is way too premature, and frankly, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. He has to prove that he can produce against SEC defenses on a consistent basis. Yes, we moved the ball almost at will against Tenn., but yet, for the majority of the game, we can’t move the ball on Arkansas, the worst defensive team statistically in the league? Yeah, I’m with you. I think Malzahn will be a head coach someday, but in two years?? Are you kidding? That’s way premature. I could see it in maybe five years, but Malzahn will still be roaming the sideline in Auburn in 2011.
Don't even try....
to explain anything to this idiot. He is simply talking shit to talk shit. Thats what alabama fans do! Just let him fondle his berry’s to the notion that Auburn sucks. alabama’s time is coming and when it does i’m sure we’ll be there to remind him how “great” his team is. They still haven’t shown me that they won’t get beat by a team that is good offensively and defensively. That may not happen till the SEC championship game and the bowl game AGAIN though. And that makes me sad. But anyone could see alabama struggle when pressured, and they won’t win against a good team with field goals. So just let them dig their own hole using arrogance as their shovel.
"dig their own hole using arrogance as their shovel"
HAHAHA wtf man?
freakin Iron Bowl Hyperbole Metaphor Trash Talking gotta love it
and if this is my team “struggling” then I feel really really good about the state of my football team
but that might just be my “Arrogance Shovel” talking for me which I usually store next to my “Pride Rake” and “Vanity Garden Hose”

right on
I’m not all that upset. After all the hype this week I was mentally prepared for a letdown. One thing that wasn’t mentioned was that Kentucky had a pretty good game against South Carolina yesterday and it might be easy to look past them but I remember losing to Vandy last year so enough said. We really are a different team this year and there is no sign that we have given up or have any fractures, so I see us competing with the best this year and being the best within a couple years.
Auburn season
Please, stop it. Auburn will go 7-5 this season You’re too full of yourselves
full of what?
Auburn hasn’t beaten anyone special. Neither has Arkansas……. we just beat you.
Probably 7-5 seasons for both Ark and Auburn. Just keepin it real.

get a life
you need one. just keepin’ it real jrkoff. you really have nothing better to do than check out our schedule and figure out which teams we can beat? Must be a slow day there in Arkansas. It’s bad enough that I, as an Auburn fan, am wasting precious moments of my life reading this and even worse, responding to, garbage posting trolls like you.
he can't get a life...
Have’nt you been to Arkansas? It’s a hell hole of a place with no resemblance of civilization anywhere near it. He has to entertain himself over here with us because there is NOTHING to do there. How they even get players to go there is beyond my comprehension.
Enjoy your win Mikey…we’ll be back with more experience to see you again :)
Actually...
i found Arkansas to be quite beautiful. I love the mountains and woods so i might be a bit bias. And i also found the people to be alot more pleasant. But i suppose there are exceptions.
Although i can see a problem with him coming here and evaluating what our team’s overall record will be at the end of the year, i don’t think you need to take it out on the man’s state.
Mike, You played one game against us and i seriouly doubt that you’ve been watching us all year. I can understand your skepticism considering how we played against ya’ll but we don’t think that that performance was really indicative of our team as a whole. You may feel that your team is going to have a 7-5 year but after what we’ve seen our team do in other games we feel that we could win 8, 9, or even 10 games this year. Does that mean it is in the books. No of course not. But try to understand that we don’t need your help in making us feel worse about the loss this weekend. Thats what punk ass bama fans are for!
West Virginia is a great team
They get in the way of themselves all the time, but they will win 9 or 10 games this season, mark my words.

Auburn's remaining games
You’ll probably beat Kentucky and Furman. All the other games are a big L. That leaves you at 7-5. Just keepin it real.
Not being a D..k
But I have to agree. I mean this is the first decent team Auburn has played and they got pretty much destroyed. Like I said before Malzhan is Auburn right now. But highschool play calling will only take you so far. But I do wish the best of for the rest of the season.

Since when have you not been a dick? That is all you have ever been.
A big ole dickhead.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Thank you Tommy Tubs
Nothing like a little incentive to come out with guns a blazing.
Now tommy, if Arkansas is a “lower tier team” what does that make you since you just got whooped. Oh, and you got the three touchdowns right……. well kind of.
It means we didnt show up with our A Game and got beat by a "Lower tier team" :)
Although I will say you looked better Saturday than I have seen you this season, I think you were just pumped to beat us and we just didnt show up to play. Your still Lower tier..sorry
Arkansas is definelty a lower tier team and trending downward...
He Mike,
1) Where will Bobby Petrino be coaching next year after Michael Dyer commits to Auburn?
2) With 2 conference losses and more on the way, will Arkansas be a Repeat SEC Cellar Dweller by the end of this season?
3) Does the state of Arkansas have an identity crisis since they had to steal the Kansas state name and use it as if it were their own.
and finally…
4) If Arkansas is such a great state, then why is it that Bill Clinton and his band of cronies is the best thing that it has managed to produce?
Just take a couple of Tylenol PM each and every night and the ringing in your ears from the Bitch Slapping that you just received will subside in several days. Also Tums may help to settle the nausea that you will surely encounter as the Hog’s season continues to collapse..
Game Over!!!
Thanks for playing…
Oh, and keep in mind, Auburn
We didn’t have our number one WR, and our number one RB….. Michael Smith, didn’t play the 4th quarter.
That's not true....
the razorbacks are a LOT younger that AU…. we start more Fr. and So. than any team in the SEC… that’s FACT!!!!

Yeah and keep in mind...
That we are playing in a new system, with a whole new coaching staff, and with only 77 players on scholarship too. Oh did i mention that our starting safety, Corner, 2 linebackers, and 1 o-lineman didn’t play….. Come on man this is the SEC. Everybody has problems. You play with what you’ve got. So don’t give me this, “We beat you and we didn’t even play so and so in the forth..”
What a dick!
A little advice for Chizik
Keep throwing the ball in the flat. SEC teams are going to eat it up.
Keep chirping fool.....
AU will be bowling in the post-season and you just had the highpoint of your miserable season. R-Kansas came out and played while our team came out flat…..no excuses there the swine won the game. But remember you’re still R-kansas and you can’t do anything about it.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Mikein Arkansas...
Sure you’re not a Bammer! LOL!
Auburn had a bad game. It would be one thing if we came out playing our best game (which we did NOT) and Arkansas won, but this was not the case. Take your win and enjoy it! From what we KNOW about Arkansas it is one of the FEW you will have this season!
War Eagle!!
Dear Mike,
Yes it is true that the Tigers got whooped by the Razorbacks. Way to go. Congratulations. But that in no way gives you the right to tell us what our season will or will not be. Unless you are some sort of magical psychic, you don’t know any better than us, what the rest of the season will bring.
As a Tiger, yesterday was unfortunate. It was a horribly played game. Auburn didn’t even bring their C game. So, if Arkansas’s role in the SEC is to opportunistically win games, and mop up the poorly played games, go for it. Catch that flying star, Buddy. I mean the Gamecocks need some company. How sweet, maybe they won’t feel so lonely anymore.

so when Arkansas beats the hell out of you, it’s just a really bad game from Auburn. But when you barely beat West Virginia what were you saying then? Somehow I doubt you gave all the credit to WV for handing you the game with 5 interceptions (or was it 4?).
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

No, I think we have been saying...
that we are a young team and we have been really proud of the accomplishments and improvements that we have seen from last year to this year with such a young group of players and a completely new coaching staff. The fact is, we played a bad game on the road in a hostile environment against a team that was pumped and brought their A game when we did not.
We will come back, learn from our young inexperienced mistakes and move forward to the rest of the season…I dont think anyone has downgraded anyone here, except YOU constantly trying to downgrade US…why are you so CONSUMED with that anyway? GO enjoy your own team why dont you??
no, he isnt happy...
he isnt going to be happy until we are all crying and throwing in the towel and saying..oh my gosh…what will we doooo?? Malzhan is leaving us!! He’s a high school coach! We cant play with anyone! OHHH whatever will we do
yea…you hold your breath zolturd….
We are proud of our young team and our new coaching staff!! We are excited about the future and YES the WINS WILL COME!!!
oh...and we only have 75 on scholarships now...
but if we keep stealing the Alabama verbal commitments we’ll be back to 85 really soon : -)
it was an away game
and arky prolly needed it a lot more than you
made a run at it in the second half, and your team is part of the SEC west discussion
your gunna catch hell for the loss, which will be fun for me, but its not that your team is bad it just got in its own way on offense and your D… well I can’t really be nice about your D on this one ha but it was a Bobby T offense with a good QB
UGA, LSU, and Ole Miss all look a lil lost on offense so you can still be a factor in the SEC
Terrence Cody drinks your milkshake!
Much of this is for naught...
I am NOT saying I will settle for less than our best. There was just not much of a chance that we take an inexperienced team on back to back road games and win them both.
The only three positions that played somewhat consistently were linebacker, running back, and quarterback. Craig Stevens, and Josh Bynes are experienced enough, we just lack depth here. Ben Tate is just a beast. Chris Todd played about as good as could be expected. The only other truly experienced group is our offensive line, and they had a bad day to say the least. Again it is to be expected in the SEC. that your team won’t go undefeated all year.
Auburn will regroup. They will refocus, and prepare for Kentucky.

If you want to see our best...
Then, we’re going to have to stop playing morning games. I’m not sure what it is, but we just don’t do morning games. On top of that, playing the entire season at 6:30 and later really puts us back against the wall when we do play on a cold Saturday morning. I think we’ll be fine this Saturday. Hey if not, then all of this day night stuff really doesn’t matter. I think it does, though.
