Roof and the Defense
If you are looking at any of the
Everyone wants to talk about the linebackers so lets do that. Freeman did not make the trip to
On to the secondary, the cornerbacks are giving too big a cushion. Has anyone noticed that? It is like they are in a prevent defense. Watch Neiko Thorpe, Harry Adams, and Walter McFadden, their first three steps are always in retreat. No wonder the receivers can catch the quick passes. If they break a tackle they are gaining 10-15 before a safety can get over there. Speaking of safety, Daren Bates is getting better, but he still loses his responsibility in coverage.
As far as the front four is concerned, all I can say is that
My opinion is that the reason our defense is struggling is not entirely on the players, or the fact that we are thin at linebacker. It is that the
Auburn fans are complaining about the defense because we as

Good points...
I’m afraid your comparison of Freeman to Blackmon may be true. This defense has the look of last year’s and that’s not a slam on the effort or coaching of the unit. Again, Auburn is so paper thin at key positions that I’m afraid they are going to wear down like they did down the stretch last season. There’s no doubt we’ll see what Roof’s made of in the next six weeks.

The Defense
Is young and not at the potential it may be at in two years, no doubt about it. But they still need to be able to slow teams down and not get drug up and down the field. Sometimes the offense is going to have those days where things just aren’t clicking, much like we saw last Saturday. Especially with the spread, things don’t always fire on all cylinders. On those days, defense may have to win some games. I agree about less zone. We have what seem to be good man corners… just go 2 man underneath coverage; the two safeties in a cover two shell to prevent the big plays Roof hates, but everyone else manned up across the board. Then we can bring that extra guy and get some sacks.
Does anyone know where we are in the SEC standings in sacks? We can’t be all that high.

Good article Zach...
…your right we have been spoiled , but for more than 10 yrs. Great Auburn defense goes back to the 1957-58 Shug Jordan teams as well as the Dye & Tuberville eras. The 1957 team only gave up 28 pts. all season and produced 6 shutouts. I was fortunate enough to be have watched those teams.
So its hard for Auburn folks to swallow. However as you said, we need to give these guys a break. I believe (with the exception of Ark.) we have been playing great on both sides of the ball . But we have won alot due to emotion. After we have a couple of good recruiting seasons, we will see that “Traditional Auburn Defense” return. Untill then we need to stay behind this team & this staff.
Appreciate your insights,

I am not really that experienced...
I just know that we also didn’t have a great effort last game. Plus, I wish people would stop slamming the defense so much on this one and remember that the offense wasn’t stellar either. Please, keep in mind that Auburn could not stop turning the ball over, even when they got inside the 5 yard line they found a way to fumble the ball. Our defense wasn’t put in the greatest position almost all game long. The vaunted offense shares some of the blame on the high score. Plus, they kept going three and out and Arkansas’s defense isn’t exactly all that and a bag of barbeque chips. We lost on every side of the ball, not just defense. Plus, Chris Todd was pretty bad on Saturday along with Fannin. If those guys play better, it might be a very different game.
