Butkus Award
so while bored at work today i happened to find my way onto ESPN.com were one of the headlines was about Mark Herzlich up for the Butkus Award. Now I have no problem with seeing as to how he was probably one of the best linebackers in the Country last yr and if it wasn't for him being sick he would be out on the field today.
But I also looked at the remaining semi finalists for this award, and as expected I didn't find any of Auburn's Linebackers up for the Award....Now some might not agree with me on this but I have not bought into the Hype of University of Alabama Linebacker Rolando McClain. No doubt he's a pretty good linebacker, but I don't think he's as good as everybody tries to proclaim. Now unfortunately I'm a Numbers type guy....And if the numbers don't add up then the hype is overrated. So I decided to look up Rolando's stats for this yr...What is eye popping to me is that he has 42 tackles...Now I thought to myself....hmmm....now i remember during the disastrous Auburn vs Ark. game that they had Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens stats up and they each had 43 tackles...So I decided to check their stats and what did i find? Josh Bynes has 51 tackles on the yr and Craig Stevens has 54...Now I believe they are very well deserving of a nomination also seeing as to how they are producing more than the acclaimed Rolando McClain.
Now I know people have said that our Linebackers Don't play well but statistics don't lie when you see numbers like that... In My opinion Nobody including some of our own fan base is giving Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens the respect they deserve for the job that they have done so far. And I also feel that McClain is overrated compared to our linebackers....Just my 2 cents....

I have to give credit where credit is due. I think McClain is the real deal. He is one of the most disruptive college linebackers I have ever seen. His style reminds me a lot of Ray Lewis. His tackle numbers maybe a little lower than Bynes or Stevens, but our guys have to play the entire game due to depth issues, and McClain has capable back ups to come in from time to time to give him a rest. Plus with Bama, their offense usually dominates in time of possession, making McClain’s numbers that much more impressive considering that he has probably played significantly less plays than Bynes or Stevens.

What is your problem?
The guy is a great player. Should I just put on my orange and blue glasses and say, “McClain sucks. He is overrated. He couldn’t even make our 2 deep roster.”? Akinosa made an arguement one way, and I made a counter. End of story. If you think I am an idiot for what I said, then I submit to you this:

If a recruit looks at this blog and decides to commit elsewhere because of what I said above, then AU has bigger problems than I thought.

Orlando McCain is overrated. Rolando McClain is not.
I live in the past and I'm better than you.

Well...
I like Stevens and Bynes, but too many times, I have seen them take a bad line in pursuit of a RB. FYI- you don’t run to where the RB is….you run to where he’s headed….most linebackers(like McClain) know that.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned the reason Mclain's numbers aren't great.
They are getting a ton of 3 and outs. When teams attempt to pass on them, they disrupt the quarterback and get a lot of incomplete passes.
I began to put that their defensive linemen get more tackles than ours but it isn’t true, through the first week in October our defensive line had almost twice as many tackles. The numbers are only reflective of how many snaps that opposing offenses are taking against the defenses.
