Well That Was Awful. What Now?
Normally I watch the game two or three times again before I make a commentary so I am fairly confident that my opinion is loosely backed in some kind of fact. Tonight I'm not going to waste my time. Unlike last week where I saw where it was possible that if a play or two had been made or transpired differently the outcome MIGHT have been different, tonight there was NO doubt. It was evident from the kickoff that we didn't have it, The mood, fervor, the execution, it was like it was just another game.....not like we got our heiney handed to us by Arkansas 7 days earlier. We were fortunate to be headed into the 2nd Qtr, still in the game (this time leading) for the 2nd game in a row, despite looking absolutely miserable, disjointed and out of sync. After another up and down quarter we found a way to score an offensive TD after somehow figuring out you don't run a 175 pound running back into the line on a 3rd and goal at the one.....instead of the 225 pound runing back. Wait I'm getting another headache......hold on.
In the 2nd half......well......blaaaarrrrrppppphhhhh......that pretty much makes up what happened. We sucked. We didn't think, we didn't execute, we didn't do anything but give everyone an hour and a half preview of despair for the rest of the season. Last week, in my post game post, I said we'll find out what Gene Chizik and his team is made of now that we got humbled by a supposedly inferior opponent. Turns out they apparently weren't made of much. Is that how you respond to a beat down? By getting manhandled by Kentucky???? Not LSU, Not UGA, Not Dear God in Heaven, F"N ALABAMA....IT WAS KENTUCKY!!!! They controlled both lines of scrimmage, they ran pretty much at will and we couldn't move the chains against them other than for spurts at a time....that was against Kentucky. Now I know Kentucky isn't THAT bad, they are the only team to really give Bama a run for their money so far, but should they dominate us? I'm going to say no. So the question begs the answer......are we a bad team....and if so is it because of the coaching or the players?
As good as we were the first five games of the season, their were glimpses of ineptitude for stretches at a time, mainly when the offense sputtered and the defense was forced to spend a lot of time on the field. It was something I thought we were growing out of but instead of getting further away from it, it had burrowed deep inside, grown stronger and more prevalent and like a cancer now seemingly consumes us. Chris Todd went from being on the short list of college footballs best QBs to being a stumbling, bumbling mess. Gus Malzhan went from Junior evil genious to a schitzophrenic psycho running sandlot plays in th final minutes of an SEC game down by 7 points. Ted Roof went from....wow he's doing pretty good with what he's got....to being measured for a nice sturdy rail while someone checks their GPS for easiest route out of Auburn.
What the hell happenend?
This is VERY disconcerting. Gene really needed this game because the sledding REALLY gets tough now. Unless something miraculous happens next week, we get totally eviscerated by LSU. And for those of you without a thesaurus. that means we get our guts spread out on the football field. Right now we show no way of being able to compete. Arkansas and Kentucky have dominated our lines on both sides of the ball. If we have 5 starters healthy on defense, I'd love to know who they are. We don't attempt to pressure the QB even when the situation absolutely demands it. And we can't stop the run....at all. Offense???? Onterrio McCalebb is hurt. Fannin and Smith?? Not being used. Darvin Adams has been taken away by opposing defenses. There isn't another WR that can get open more than 5 yards down the field. And most importantly Brandon Cox's torn rotator cuff is back in his old #12. Chris Todd went away, I don't know where, but he's not in his body anymore. Its like the 1st five games never happened and we are playing Vanderbilt '08 again. Poor decisions, bad throws, and worst of all....no confidence....none. I n fact its all over the team, you can see it and worse ....smell it .... even through the TV .... indecision .... hesitation ..... panic ..... FEAR!!!! You know it as well as I do, you saw it, the only thing to do is confront it, face it and defeat it. There is no dishonor in losing...none. If the better team wins so be it. But we didn't own up to our faults and try and win with our strengths. We played scared, pulling out trick plays and refusing to smash Kentucky with our only real weapon....Ben Tate. Yes Kentucky would expect Ben Tate was going to get the ball but they also seemed to be shutting down every other option that we might use....so I that event , I say go with Tate.Simplistic, yes, but you and I both know that at the end of that game Chris Todd wouldn't have hit an open target with Julio Jones and AJ Green running routes for him. All he was doing was making divots in the turf and giving Adolphs meat tenderizer a run for their money with all the ribs he was crushing by hanging his receivers out to dry on his throws.
So we lost. What now? 6-6? It sure looks that way. I can't imagine us beating another SEC team at this point. So where do we go from here? Ride it out and hope for the best or throw some redshirts in the trash and see what the new blood brings to the table? Any other options? One thing I lnow for sure is that Gene Chizik needs to hold staff meeting tomorrow morning and grab some folks by the throat and DEMAND performance. This is not going to be friggin repeat performance of '08!!! And by that I mean, no more procedure penalties, no more ilegal formations, ie, no more stupid mistakes. No more Chinese firedrill plays with the game in the balance, be it the 1st Qtr or 4th!!! No more sweeps after the opposing defense has shown it can stop it after the 5th, 6 th ot 11th time. No more opposing RB's waltzing through the middle of the line for 9 yards a carry when the opposing QB isn't Snead or McElroy. No more contact free practices to save on injuries. We need to learn to shed a block and tackle somebody!!! It ain't gonna happen with walk throughs!! We're injured. We're going to be injured and it isn't going to get any better after LSU puts another 5 or 6 guys on the shelf. We might as well get used to it , get tough and make some tackles ......and hope to god we get some recruiting reinforcements next year.
If Chris Todd is hurt and Gene and Gus are playing him, then they aren't any smarter than Tuberville and Franklin were, and they were responsible for the worst ,most agonizingly frustraiting Auburn football I've ever seen. If they are going down that road...well.....thats just not a good thing. There is no reason for this. Nobody expected us to go 10-2 or 9-3 before the season started. The hope was that we could go 7-5 or maybe 8-4 if we got lucky. Probably not going to happen but its not over yet. Its time to make some serious decisions and get down to some serious gut checking. I don't think Tuberville left the cupboard as bare as it appears. He was able to patch together a respectable defense for most of the games last season and I think we know we have plenty of playmakers on offense if we have somebody to get the ball to them. So I think the coaches better get it together and do so quickly because there is more bad on the way. Winning was helping us with recruiting, what is losing miserably going to do to it.
Gene miserably failed his first gut check of the season, now he has LSU....on the road....at night..
God help him.
WarEagle and GodSpeed, its going to be a bumpy ride the rest of the way it looks like

I don't think arm strength is Todd's problem
Based on what I’ve seen the past two weeks, Todd is simply terribly inaccurate and locks onto Darvin Adams. Let’s see if I can recall all the misfires by Todd tonight: 1) Underthrow of a wide open Mario Fannin over the middle in the 4th quarter 2) Overthrow of Darvin Adams on fourth-and-5 3) Overthrow of Eric Smith 4) Underthrow of a wheel route to Mario Fannin close to the end zone 5) Overthrow of Q. Carr in the first quarter (should’ve led Carr to the middle of the field, but instead, threw the ball back toward the sideline). Where has the pinpoint accuracy of the first five games gone?
Also, he is burning a hole through the chest of Darvin Adams. Look for somebody else if he isn’t open! Todd just stares Adams down everytime he drops back to pass. If Adams isn’t open, Todd either throws the ball away or checks the ball down to Tate or Smith. It’s not good play by a 5th-year (or 6th-year, whatever he is) senior QB to lock in on one receiver all the time. He has got to start going through his reads and finding the open receiver. Fans want to say, “Defenses are starting to take Darvin Adams away, and no other receiver will step up to help.” Well, no receiver can help out if Todd is only looking at Adams the entire time. Todd has to see the whole field and get the ball to the open guy. Right now, Todd’s accuracy and progression reading are awful. He’s got to turn it around quick, or else it’s gonna be a loooong last five games of the season.

I agree
He looks like he has plenty of zip on the ball, he’s just making bad throws.
BUUUUTT
That could be an indication of some kind of injury as well. I don’t know but he does look awfully unsure of himself out there. A lot of this is probably on the receivers as well, our guys just can’t get open.
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
Confidence is the problem
Col Angus,
Unlike mspirate, your only intention in this blog is to point out every screw-up that Auburn has executed in the last two games. Your acting like the normal spoiled fan and you probably need to stop watching the games before you have a heart attack. While your blogs are entertaining, you are nothing more than a toxic Auburn fan who should consider watching pro games since you are so critical of these “kids”.
Now back to something positive because I love Auburn football. There are some issues at hand here, but the biggest issue is confidence. Todd is not doing well in this department at all. Darvin Adams is our only skill W/R, so it is common for Todd to look his way first. When our lead RB has 5x 100 yd games, I am not to concerned with that department. The offensive line is giving Todd enough protection, so that is not a problem.
I agree our defense has some issues, but Roof did execute a few blitzes in the game and we got 2-3 QB sacks. Our LB corp is depleted and they are doing the best they can do. They are not the calibur of LBs we have been used to in the past, but it is all we have for this year. Our bright spot is our secondary and considering the time the opposing QB has to find receivers, they are doing very well in coverage. Bottomline is some injuries have hampered our defense and key players missing (Safety- Mike McNeill) have lowered our productivity.
Special teams were a bright spot last night as we blocked a FG and ran it back; something that has not been done since the 80s. Our kicker can be counted on to make 40+ yarders, but the KO return has to improve.
Lets face it, we do not have as many skill players as other opponents do and the former regime is guilty of not continuing to build this team up with outstanding recruits. No one expected Auburn to be where they are right now, so lets be happy or content with the progress. I agree I did not see losses coming from KY or ARK, but we have the potentially to get to a bowl game. Sometimes average teams (Auburn) play one to two levels higher than their performance when facing better teams like the ones we have in the month of OCT, so lets ride this thing out.
War Eagle!
trying to be positive
That is admirable. I suppose I am another toxic AU fan, but based on how many different receivers we had catching balls and making plays in previous games, why would Todd or anyone else think Darvin Adams is his only option? I do think something is up and am of the opinion that maybe Todd is ready to sit out and let some other kids get experience.
No matter how positive you want to be, all indications are that the offense has looked bad and worse and in that order. I think that in itself has made it impossible for our defense to keep anyone contained and last night they played pretty well and forced a lot of punts. At one point in the first half, UK was 0/6 on 3rd down conversions. That does not indicate poor defense to me generally. But they were constantly on the field with little rest or substitutions. If we get just a few things clicking again on offense, we will compete, but now is the time for that to happen, (actually it should have been yesterday) War Eagle!
Aboslutely
Just like last year, the offense is what is killing us in these losses. If we keep the ball, the defense gets a lot better. I think the D actually did pretty good considering they were on the field all night. The only bad thing is that they knew they had to shut down the run and blitz on obvious passing downs and really did neither.
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
Col. is not a 'Toxic Fan'; he is just realistic.
Look, I don’t always like what he has to say, but I certainly would never question his fanhood. I don’t think that you spend time on this wonderful blog and think about these things because you hate Auburn football (this excludes all Homers and trolls that visit the site regularly). Look, I LOVE Auburn Football! Always have. i can’t remember a time when I did not devote my Fall Saturday’s to this team. But last night was absolutely frustrating. The loss to Arkansas was one thing, but we still showed some spark and gut in that game. Last night we were just flat. That is painful. Todd has shown us that he is capable of being a fantastic qb-truly rising to whatever challenge presents itself. What has happened in the last two games to that magic? We all want to give him the benefit of the doubt—ie he is hurt. The coaches need to fix it and quit trying to use a gimpy qb, since we supposedly have back-ups
Look, it is still Great to Be an Auburn Tiger!

I think we all support the team....
however I am of the kick them in the butt variety. I would love to lavish them with praise like I did earlier in the season but who thinks they (players and coaches) are putting in their BEST effort right now?. That includes preperation for the game, not just the game itself. Either the beggining of the season was an aberration or we just aren’t playing up to our capability. You decide. I choose to think we need to work harder, not assume we are just a bad team.
Life is not kind or fair and nobody is going to feel sorry for you if you are hurt or have lost your confidence. I know that sounds callous, but how many people do you know with children or a serious illness who have been fired from their jobs in this economy? I know lots, one with brain cancer. This world is cruel and the only person that is REALLY looking out for you is YOU. The quicker you understand this as a young man the better off you will be. I have undying respect for people who have great compassion for people and do things without any expectation of something in return, but lets face it, they are few and far between. Our young men need to become MEN and that means using your head with your heart. I think our heads are the problem right now more than anything else.
I’m not a pollyanna, but I’m not spoiled, I’ve been an Auburn fan for 39 years …or since I was 3. I love the school, the town and the people and that is why I went to school there. It was the best time of my life before I had my boys. Following Tiger Football can be a thankless passion. All I have ever known is the frustration of a team that never can quite get to the brass ring, kind of like the Red Sox before 2004. Thats true loyalty if you ask me. Trust me, you don’t watch Auburn football to get spoiled by success. Despite how good we get one year or another there’s ALWAYS somebody better. 2004 anyone? What are the odds of that EVER happening again. I’ll be here all season. I point out the good and the bad. I try to be objective and if that offends you, well you don’t have to read what I write. That is until I get a job in the Obama administration.
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
I'm and Auburn fan AND a Red Sox fan
which automatically qualifies me for government funded healthcare realted to heart conditions.
War Eagle
Me too..
I got sucked in by the 75 series and my loathing of the Cincinnati Reds. I’m an Atlanta Braves loyalist but I have always rooted for the Red Sox as my American League team. I even adopted the Bruins as my hockey team after the Flames left town.
Geez thats alot of heartbreak. I guess I’m to stupid to glom onto the winning teams.
