Back to the Future

Someone cue up the storm so lightning can hit the clock tower and make sure Marty and Doc are ready with the Delorean.  I want to get back to 2009.  Was it just me or did I just watch an Auburn game from 2008?  Think I am making this up?  I am not, it was like a replay of last season.  Is this loss going to be the Vandy of 2008... I doubt it, but it could.  Is it time to panic for Auburn Fans?  I say yes and no.

I will be the first to admit, I was really thinking that Auburn would be something special this season.  A 5-0 start and I was even thinking that Chizik would be SEC Coach of the Year and maybe even National Coach of the Year (although Cincy’s Brian Kelly might have that one locked up).  Malzahn would be the Browles Award winner and Auburn would be back on the national stage.  Now, I am not so sure.  Yes Auburn will still beat some people.  The Tigers are in the SEC and any team can win on any given Saturday. Ole Miss is mediocre, LSU as well.  Georgia is just plain bad, but Auburn cannot say much... the Tigers are bad as well.

The first signs of 2008 was Chris Todd.  He is back to Version 1.0.  I only half watched the Tennessee Game, but something had to have happened to him during that game.  His arm is not the same as it has been over the first 5 games.  It looked weak during the Arkansas game, but I thought maybe he was just off.  For it to be the same way a week later... panic.  He throw two balls that in my opinion were Todd 2.0 throws.  One to Fannin (I think) over the middle for a critical first down in the fourth quarter, and the other was a throw away on a 3rd and 4 late in the fourth quarter.  Someone please tell me that they saw the play or the point where Chris Todd became 1.0 again.  I refuse to believe that it is just fatigue.   I hope it is, but something just does not seem right.  My Mother even text messaged me last night and told me that something had to be wrong. How can he fall off so fast?  I know that the defenses are daring him to win the game, but that should help him not hurt.

The next sign was all the penalties.  The Tigers were full of them, with most coming at crucial points in the game.  Most notably was the final drive for Auburn.   A 3rd and 1 turned into a 3rd and 11, and they were dumb penalties.  The second one was after a time out no less.  False Starts and illegal formations cannot happen in the fourth quarter, PERIOD.  The only decent news was that it was not Ziemba this time.

Lastly, I would like to point out the defense.  Well, no second thought no I will not.  We all know about them.  I would like to point out that at least the Ted Roof did have the Tigers blitzing some.  Not that it really mattered much.

Auburn will beat Furman to get six wins.  I am sure of that, but all the other games are losses or toss ups.  Am I giving up on this years Tigers?  Never, but no longer are the Tigers the powerhouse that most fans, including me thought they would be.  I might even regret this post the day after, but I doubt it.

I hear ya, bro. But they say never send an email when you’re pi$$ed off. So maybe your last sentence is the glimmer of psychological hope.

As for the penalty situation. I thought I was watching Auburn Football: The Movie, by Oliver Stone. Is it possible that Auburn would get so many penalties and Kentucky none? Really?

I also wonder about Todd’s arm.

Kudos to the defense for blocking the kick and running back for a touchdown. That was awesome fun.

I wasn’t going to log on today. Too depressed. But then I thought, I’ll check in with my homies over at Track ‘Em. I sure as hell can’t go to al.com. That’s gonna take a few days.

Tis a sad sad day ...

I’ve stayed quiet out of respect for our players. As I’ve been saying since day one, Chizik is an awful fit for Auburn. On two consecutive Saturdays, we’ve had a shortage of coaching talent. His arrogance, ego, and bubble gum need to move along … right behind Jacobs.

Ever wonder why God painted a beautiful sky blue and a breathtaking sunset orange?

It is what it is....

We got outplayed and manhandled by a mediocre team….at home….at night. Can’t blame this on 11am.

I think it is only natural to be frustrated and upset by what we have seen the last two weeks. We went from from being an SEC contender to a likely .500 team almost overnight. If that doesn;t get you rankled as a fan, there is something wrong with your internal information processor. Something doesn’t compute.

What is overly disturbing is that we didn’t respond to the thrasing we got last week. I’ll say this for Tuberville, when we got our butts handed to us, we usually gave somebody hell the next week. Last night, aside from Ben Tate, I didn’t see anybody playing inspired.

I’m not giving up hope. We went south over night, maybe we can turn it around just as quick but that is based on hope not on what I’ve seen the last two weeks.

If you are a player reading this, don’t be discouraged. We are upset as fans because we believe you are better, we believe you can win. Thats why we are critical when we see obvious mistakes not being corrected. Trust me, its worse when people don’t say anything. That means they don’t care.

I don't think thats true

Maybe not enough talent depth wise but we have got talented players. Anybody that watched the first five games could see we have plenty of talent. Its coaching that talent to make it better, to make adjustments to how your opponents combat your talent is what makes the difference in the SEC. Our guys aren’t getting better, thats on Malzhan, Roof and Chizik. Trooper Taylor is not getting more out of our receivers. They don’t get open. We haven’t had a possession receiver since Courtney Taylor. Why is that so difficult? Very Frustrating.

I don't think its time to panic, but...

I think we should realistically just start looking for signs of the future. ‘09 is not our season either just like ’08 wasn’t. If we had trouble with Kentucky AT HOME and WITHOUT their starting quarterback, we are going to have major trouble with LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, and Alabama. Right now, with the state of things we are losing those 4 games by 2/3 touchdowns atleast. I don’t even want to think about what ’Bama’s gonna do to us on Black Friday right now. Our homecoming game doesn’t even seem like its going to be ‘fun’ to watch.

I’m not mad about it, I’m not burning all of my Auburn clothes, I’m just calling it like I see it: It seems that Todd has run out of steam big time. Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachary have been found out and shut down and our running game is starting to become really bleh. It really has looked like a Tony Franklin coached offense the last 2 weeks (3 if you count our win against a tough UT defense). I think it all boils down to depth, everyone knows this but now we are all starting to realize it. I feel bad for the team as a whole because there are some great kids on this team and they started out so strong, but the signs were there all along. We all knew deep down something to this effect would begin to creep into our year.

And for Malzahn; I’m not calling for his job by any means, but I’ve come to the conclusion the he is either A.) been figured out by other coordinators and is needing some serious adjustments B.) He’s not the real deal C.) he’s dealing with some major personnel issues in this offense. Now, I honestly believe its a combination of A & B. Gus doens’t have any of his kids in there running his system. And no one on this staff does for that matter. But I have to wonder after our strong start on the offensive side of the ball why in the world we’ve looked so average the last 3 weeks.

I think we will be back, eventually. It may just be further off than we all thought. RIght now it doesn’t look like we’re even going to be in the running for the SEC next year but that’s just way too far off to call.

Everyone have a great cool Sunday afternoon and War Eagle!

Malzahn

I really believe that he is the real deal, I just think that we are kind of behind the eight ball with Todd not being 100%. I truly believe that. Now if Chizik will talk about injuries. I am sure that there is more to know than Auburn will allow us to hear.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

Uh maybe

Does it make sense to play a guy that can’t perform physically? Would you play Ben Tate with a strained hammy? No, because he an’t do what he’s supposed to.

If you have injured players you have to replace them, even if the guy replacing them has never played before. Whether you complete your assignment or not, you have to have the ability to do so physically. To me, blaming injuries is a crutch. If thats true, play somebody else. If you are good enough phyiscally to be in the game, you better be good enough to perform. I can live with losing if you are having to play 22 freshman becasue your starters are hurt. I can’t live with having injured players, getting beat up more, losing and getting embarrassed just because they are supposed to be the best option. EIther you can go or you can’t. To me Todd just looks confused because his receivers can’t get open and he doesn;t know what to do.

I hope that the players don't get discouraged.

We are all frustrated because we saw a spark in these young Tigers, that certainly wasn’t there last night. If they were playing all heart last night and still lost, I don’t think that we would be saying the things that we are saying this morning.

The penalties were highly frustrating yesterday. I have no idea why Auburn got all of the calls and Kentucky got none. We all know that Kentucky did not play a squeaky clean game. for example, it is hard for Darvin Adams to receive if he is either layed out flat on the ground or wrapped up by a defender.

I don’t think that the penalties cost us the game. Our lack of execution lost us the game. But if you looked at other games going on in the SEC yesterday, our game was not the only one with seriously questionable officiating. Something has got to give in this area.

For once this season, this loss is not on the defense. Those guys got tired, but overall they played a better game than they had all season.

Don't Blame the Coaches

Don’t blame your coaches, Ky needed a win badly and went to Auburn all fired up. Like I’ve said before UK wins one about every year that they aren’t suppose to. Also didn’t Arkansas almost Knock of #1 Florida if they could only hit some field goals.
Support your coaches and team and go kick some Alabama and LSU Butts. But give UK some love instead of blaming yourselves, we are getting over being mediocre.

by UKFever on Oct 18, 2009 11:35 AM CDT reply actions

I agree with you.

I can’t stand the post-loss coach lynching that has become so popular in recent years. It was sad to hear that the stands were emptying at the end of the game. The players notice. We should not do that to them no matter how ugly the game.

Good luck with the rest of your season! You guys came to win last night.

Where's the passion???

I think part of what upset me most was the lack of passion in the locker room interviews. Where’s the leadership on this team? Why aren’t the leaders standing up and smacking some of the younger kids upside their heads? Where is the Kodi Burns that made the empassioned speech after losing the starting QB position?

The interviews infuriated me. We sounded like a bunch of spoiled kids that didn’t get what they wanted for Christmas. We need some leaders to emerge on this team and instill some passion. I firmly believe that in most positions we have the talent to play with most of the SEC, but without the passion we will remain lost for the rest of the season.
