Saturday Savants - October 19, 2009

Teak and JB tackle the heartbreaking loss to Kentucky.  The guys try to find the highlights of a really poor all around showing by the Auburn Tigers, and really try to put the season into perspective.  They look ahead to the buzz saw that is the LSU Tigers at home on Saturday night.  Then they take a stroll around the SEC and review and predict the last weeks and this week games.

Bye week

I say put it after the Oct 31 game, then if we have injuries, we have the bye week followed by homecoming vs Whatsamatta U, so in reality, those injured players would have 2 weeks to heal up.

Bye weeks are tricky.

…..If you’ve got a veteran team, especially offensively, I think they are best used the week before a big rival, to heal up.

…..But wow, have I seen a lot of teams come off the bye, looking sluggish and out of sync. 36-0 last year, for instance.

Bye Week

The week that Auburn is open has been right before Alabama for a couple of years now. I wouldn’t mind us having 11 games one year if they would allow it. Remember, 12 games is a new length of a season. Before, you only played 11 games. In essence, the Auburn team gets a week off after a full 90’s season is over. In fact, haven’t we had 11 game seasons in the 00’s? Well, you do not get any of the usefulness of the bye week except for one game. I think that five or six games into the season is a perfect time for it personally. That way, you get a rest at the half way point. A game like LSU then Ole Miss right after that is really tough.

I think we only played 11 regular season games in 2004. The seasons before and after, we played 12. I think 12 games became a regular fixture in 2005.
